Broadband Multilayer Absorber Design Using Double-Stage Cognitive Seeker Optimization Algorithm

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus; Korkmaz, Huseyin; Iliev, Teodor

In this paper, a double-stage cognitive seeker optimization (DSC-SO) algorithm is developed for evaluating optimum design parameters of broadband microwave absorbers. The algorithm not only gives freedom of selecting different number of layers and optimizing the order of layers and their thickness in different stages (double-stage) but also utilizes a cognitive search to improve the optimization. Contributions of the cognitive search and the two stages of our algorithm are first examined to show its efficiency. Then, its performance has been evaluated for two different optimization problems (a broadband absorber for one incidence angle and a broadband absorber with multiple incidence angles) in comparison with similar algorithms in the literature. It has been shown that our algorithm determines either fewer number of layers or smaller overall absorber thickness or both when compared with the results of other algortihms. Finally, the effect of fabrication tolerance is conducted to examine the importance of fewer number of layers.

Sustainable Optimization of Ohmic Heating–Assisted Extraction of Polyphenolics from Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum L.): LC–MS/MS Profiling and Blueness–Greenness Assessment

    Kantar, Harun; Ecem Bayram, Nesrin

This study aimed to extract bioactive compounds from goji berry (Lycium barbarum L.) fruit using the ohmic heating–assisted extraction (OHAE) method and optimize the extraction conditions. In this context, firstly, the extraction conditions to be applied for the OHAE method were determined using the response surface method (RSM)-Box Behnken experimental design. During the study, temperature, holding time, and electrical field strength were determined as independent variables, while the total phenolic compound (TPC), total flavonoid compound (TFC), and antioxidant activity (DPPH) were selected as dependent variables. As a result of the optimization, the optimum conditions were determined to be 60 °C for the temperature, 60 min for the holding time, and 45 V/cm for the electrical field strength, and the composite desirability value of the model was 0.90. The highest experimental results for TPC, TFC, and DPPH were found to be 23.83 mg GAE/g, 7.33 mg QE/g, and 24.53 mg TE/g, respectively. In addition, the polyphenolic profiles of all extracts obtained under different process conditions were determined by LC–MS/MS, and rutin was the phenolic detected at the highest rate in the extracts. In addition, the blueness and greenness of the analytical method used in this study were evaluated using the BAGI and ComplexGAPI metrics, respectively. The results indicate that OHAE is an effective and sustainable method for extracting bioactive compounds from goji berries.

Disrupted miRNA Biogenesis Machinery Reveals Common Molecular Pathways and Diagnostic Potential in MDS and AML

Çevik, Kenan; Ay, Mustafa Ertan; Tombak, Anıl; Ay, Özlem İzci; Karakaş, Ümit; Erdal, Mehmet Emin

Background: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are clonal stem cell disorders in which disrupted post-transcriptional regulation contributes to aberrant hematopoiesis and leukemic transformation. The miRNA biogenesis machinery, which comprises Drosha, DGCR8, Dicer, TARBP2, and AGO1, ensures the precise maturation of miRNAs that control lineage commitment and proliferation. However, the extent to which alterations in this pathway reshape hematopoietic gene networks during myeloid disease evolution remains largely unexplored. Methods: Bone marrow samples from newly diagnosed, untreated MDS and AML patients and matched healthy controls were analyzed for the expression of five key miRNA biogenesis genes using quantitative real-time PCR. Statistical comparisons, correlation matrices, and ROC analyses were performed to characterize gene-expression differences. These results were integrated with multigene logistic modeling, decision-curve analysis, and exploratory random forest/SHAP approaches to evaluate molecular interactions and diagnostic relevance. Results: DROSHA, DICER1, and TARBP2 were significantly downregulated in both MDS and AML, suggesting impaired miRNA maturation and a loss of global post-transcriptional control. DGCR8 expression increased across higher-risk MDS groups, suggesting compensatory activation of the Microprocessor complex, whereas AGO1 levels remained relatively stable, consistent with partial maintenance of RISC function. Correlation analyses revealed a co-regulated DROSHA–TARBP2–AGO1 module. ROC, logistic, and machine learning models identified DGCR8 and DICER1 as the strongest diagnostic discriminators. The integrated five-gene signature achieved high discriminative performance (AUC ≈ 0.98) and showed promise but remains preliminary potential for clinical application. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that defects in miRNA biogenesis disrupt hematopoietic homeostasis, reflecting common mechanisms in MDS and AML. The dysregulation of DICER1, DGCR8, and TARBP2 offers insights into miRNA-driven leukemogenesis and may pave the way for miRNA-based diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, pending validation in larger cohorts. Although transcript-level data are provided, future studies should include functional validation to determine the impact on downstream miRNA processing and hematopoietic pathways.

This investigation examined methanol extracts obtained from the whole plant (encompassing all organs except roots), flowers, and fruits of wild Glycyrrhiza glabra var. glandulifera, a liquorice cultivar indigenous to the Cappadocia region of Türkiye, constituting the first comprehensive in vitro and in silico analysis of this species within the region. Anatomical identification revealed distinctive structural characteristics, including thick-walled epidermal cells in the stem, organized clusters of collenchyma cells, and well-defined sclerenchyma layers encompassing the vascular bundles. The petiole exhibited a characteristic heart-shaped morphology containing three vascular bundles, while foliar analysis demonstrated the presence of stomata on both adaxial and abaxial surfaces, accompanied by a bifacial mesophyll arrangement. The extracts demonstrated remarkable antimicrobial efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as various fungal species. Furthermore, significant cytotoxic activity was observed against non-small cell lung cancer (H460), with the whole plant extract exhibiting IC50 values of 117.8 µg/mL (24 h) and 105.6 µg/mL (48 h). Flower extracts demonstrated IC50 values of 116.8 µg/mL (24 h) and 112.7 µg/mL (48 h), while fruit extracts displayed superior potency with IC50 values of 104.4 µg/mL (24 h) and 63.09 µg/mL (48 h). Molecular docking analyses, conducted utilizing AutoDock Tools 1.5.6 and BIOVIA Discovery Studio Visualizer 4.5, revealed significant protein-ligand interactions, yielding optimal binding energy and inhibition constant values of -9.57 kcal/mol and 96.92 nM, respectively. The RMSD values were calculated based on structural variations between ligand-protein complexes during re-docking procedures. These findings underscore the substantial biological potential of Glycyrrhiza glabra var. glandulifera from Cappadocia, necessitating further comprehensive investigation.

Readaptation of the functional reserves of elite mixed martial arts athletes during long-term rehabilitation after musculoskeletal injuries

Savenko, Andrii; Chernozub, Andrii; Turkmen, Mutlu; Olkhovyi, Oleh; Shtefiuk, Ivan; Korchagin, Mukola

Purpose. To study the distinctive characteristics of functional reserve readaptation in elite Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) athletes during long-term rehabilitation after musculoskeletal injuries using various physical therapy protocols. Material & Methods. The study examined 24 elite athletes who sustained musculoskeletal injuries after competitions, predominantly involving the neuromuscular system and limb ligaments. 50 % of the athletes had previously practiced Muay Thai boxing, while the others specialized in Greco-Roman wrestling before MMA. The monitoring of the athletes’ functional reserve readaptation during rehabilitation lasted seven months. The study included four control stages (before injury, and after two, five, and seven months of rehabilitation), each accompanied by a set of test loads designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the readaptation. To assess the adaptive and compensatory responses of the body to the applied loads, a series of blood biomarkers was analyzed, including creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, cortisol, and creatinine. Changes in body composition were tracked using bioimpedance analysis. Results. The most noticeable signs of adaptation failure in elite MMA athletes occurred during the first two months of rehabilitation. Compared to pre-injury data, both groups of athletes showed a decrease in baseline creatine phosphokinase and creatinine levels. This was accompanied by an increase in lactate dehydrogenase activity in their blood serum, marking a significant drop in the body’s functional reserves and overall resistance. During the three-month rehabilitation period, athletes exhibited only partial signs of functional readaptation, despite the implementation of protocols that significantly differed from standard physical therapy approaches. Moreover, a decrease in blood cortisol concentration in response to physical load was detected in both groups, suggesting a low level of resistance and the need for additional energy supply. During the last eight weeks of the seven-month rehabilitation program, exercises replicating 85-90% of MMA technical skills facilitated both the activation and enhancement of functional readaptation. Modifications to the protocols led to an increase in baseline creatinine and creatine phosphokinase levels, along with a decrease in lactate dehydrogenase activity in both groups. Simultaneously, the changes observed in biochemical blood markers in response to the test loads indicated activation of mechanisms supporting short-term adaptation. Conclusions. The findings indicate the limited effectiveness of standard physical therapy protocols in supporting the readaptation of functional reserves among elite MMA athletes during long-term rehabilitation. Despite the high resistance of physiological systems to physical loads recorded before injury, the lack of sufficient muscular activity during the five-month rehabilitation period led to the manifestation of compensatory reactions. Restructuring the rehabilitation protocols with adjusted training loads and exercises simulating 75-80% of combat movements positively influenced the athletes’ recovery. The study results helped to identify and analyze the low effectiveness of functional reserve readaptation observed in many elite MMA athletes during long-term rehabilitation after musculoskeletal injuries.

Salvia aethiopis L., a member of the Lamiaceae family, has gained attention due to its bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic applications. This study investigated the chemical composition and biological activities of S. aethiopis ethanol extract collected from Karaman province, Türkiye. The phenolic profile of the plant was characterized using LC–MS/MS analysis, which revealed substantial amounts of rosmarinic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, and p-coumaric acid. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was evaluated against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungal strains, using the agar well diffusion method. The results demonstrated potent antibacterial effects, particularly against Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Furthermore, the cytotoxic potential of S. aethiopis was assessed on H-460 non-small cell lung cancer cells. The extract exhibited a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect, with a significant reduction in cell viability after 24 and 48 h of treatment, yielding IC50 values of 80.08 and 56.19 μg/mL, respectively. These findings suggest that S. aethiopis possesses promising antimicrobial and anticancer properties, which could contribute to the development of novel therapeutic agents.

Erkılıç, Ali Ozan; Bayraktar, Bülent; Erkiliç, Tuğçe Orkun; Türkmen, Mutlu; Kul, Murat; Yönal, Mehmet

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Bigorexia nervosa (BGN) levels on endocrine (Asprosin, GLP-1) and cerebral (BDNF) responses and nutritional and physical (6MWT, Six-Minute Walk Test)), speed, metabolic equivalent unit (MET)) performance parameters in students of the faculty of sports sciences. This study investigated muscle dysmorphic disorder (MDD), physical activity levels, and specific hormonal markers in 120 university students (63 females, 57 males) aged 18–25 years, all studying sport sciences and reporting no existing health problems. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire, food frequency questionnaire and the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder (Bigorexia) Inventory through face-to-face interviews. Physical activity was assessed using the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) to measure walking distance, and Metabolic Equivalent (MET) was calculated based on the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) formula. Body Mass Index (BMI) was determined from anthropometric measurements of height and body weight. Saliva samples were collected to analyze Asprosin, BDNF, and GLP-1 hormone levels using the ELISA technique.Data were analyzed using number, percentage, mean, chi-square, t-test, Pearson correlation, and ANOVA tests. In all analyses, significance was accepted as p < 0.05. According to the demographic findings of the study, the majority of participants (64.2%) were third-year students, and 52.5% were female. The mean age of the participants was 22.01 years, the mean height was 168.59 cm, and the mean weight was 62.61 kg. 73.3% of the individuals were classified as normal weight, 12.5% as pre-obese, 11.7% as underweight, and 2.5% as obese. Men had significantly higher bigorexia and its subscale scores than women (p < 0.05), and bigorexia was positively correlated with height and negatively correlated with BMI (p < 0.01). Mean salivary BDNF levels were higher in participants consuming 1–2 meals per day (p = 0.035), and mean salivary asprosin levels were significantly higher in the obese group compared to the healthy group (p = 0.008). Additionally, a strong positive correlation was found between asprosin and GLP1 levels (r = 0.585; p < 0.01). Bigorexia status was significantly associated with meat, meat products, and fat consumption (p < 0.05), while no association was found with physical performance parameters such as 6MWT, speed, and MET (p > 0.05). The average MET value was found to be 4.53, indicating that participants generally engaged in moderate-intensity physical activity. In conclusion, examining endocrine (asprosin, GLP-1) and cerebral (BDNF) hormone responses, as well as nutritional and physical performance parameters, according to BGN levels reveals the impact of BGN on physiological and nutritional behaviors. Given the impact of BGN trends on students’ health, examining hormone profiles and their relationships with physical performance and nutrition is believed to significantly contribute to understanding the health problems associated with BGN and developing appropriate interventions.

A Hybrid Retrieval Method for an Ω-Class Bianisotropic Metamaterial Using Scattering Parameter Method

Ozturk, Gokhan; Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus; Korkmaz, Huseyin; Stoyanov, Ivaylo

In this study, a hybrid retrieval method is proposed to retrieve all terms in the electric and magnetic tensors (along with coupling tensors) of Ω -class bianisotropic metamaterial (MM) slabs using scattering (S-) parameters of both normal incidence TE2 mode and oblique incidence TM2 and TE modes. Compared with other extraction methods in the literature, our retrieval method fully characterizes the MM slab (extracts all constitutive parameters) without necessitating any numerical technique (non-iterative) using fewer wave configurations (two modes) and sample configurations (one configuration). Contrary to two sample configurations required in the application of previous retrieval methods in the literature, one sample configuration (with and without its rotation in the transverse plane) significantly decreases the effect of fabrication tolerances on the accuracy of extraction. The proposed extraction method is first validated by a bulk MM slab synthesized by the Lorentz and Drude models. Then, it is applied for extracting the electromagnetic properties of two bianisotropic MM slabs in the form of square split-ring-resonators and Ω -shape using their S-parameters simulated by a full wave simulation program. Finally, its accuracy is examined by comparing simulated S-parameters with those reconstructed by using extracted electromagnetic parameters. It is observed that our proposed method determines the constitutive parameters with a relatively higher accuracy in a relatively short amount of time.

Investigation of environmental effects through long-term vibration monitoring on the structural behavior and seismic performance assessment of the Hagia Sophia Bell Tower

Yanik, Yusuf; Türker, Temel; Öztürk, Hasan Tahsin; Demirtaş, Betül; Aymelek, Abdullah; Yildirim, Ömer; Çalik, İsmet

This study presents development and application of a high-precision, multi-channel vibration measurement system to monitor structural behavior of Hagia Sophia Bell Tower. The research focused on assessing the dynamic characteristics of the tower, both through experimental measurements and numerical simulations. The study began by conducting an in-depth analysis of the tower's dynamic properties using finite element (FE) models, enabling the identification of experimental frequencies. Long-term monitoring was carried out using the newly developed vibration measurement system, complemented by a digital sensor that enabled simultaneous recording of environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. These parameters were continuously monitored to assess their potential impact on the frequencies and dynamic responses of the tower. Subsequently, regression analyses were performed to establish the relationship between environmental factors, and the tower's structural behavior. The experimental data were used to update FE models, ensuring a more accurate representation of the tower's actual behavior under varying conditions. Earthquake analyses were also conducted on the FE models to evaluate the seismic performance. The results of the study confirmed that vibration testing, combined with environmental monitoring, was a highly effective method for detecting changes in structural behavior. The findings highlighted the significant influence of environmental factors on the dynamic characteristics, with frequency variations reaching an average of 3.6%. These effects should be considered in ongoing monitoring. It was demonstrated that updating FE models reduced numerical errors below 2.5%. These findings gave importance of integrating long-term monitoring with FE model updating, providing more accurate protection and assessment strategies.

Life cycle cost and carbon footprint analysis of CuO–Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluids in thermoelectric vaccine refrigerators

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Erdem

This study investigates the application of a CuO–Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid as a coolant in thermoelectric vaccine refrigerators, aiming to enhance heat dissipation from the Peltier module’s hot side. A 35-L cooling cabinet was utilised, and experimental comparisons were made using water and a 2% CuO–Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid. Results show that the vaccine cabinet reaches the target temperature of 4 °C in 990 s with nanofluid, compared to 1200 s with water. The system’s energy consumption was reduced by 18.3%, and carbon emissions decreased by 12.3% over a 15-year lifespan, highlighting its environmental benefits. Despite similar coefficients of performance (COP), the nanofluid system demonstrates enhanced efficiency, shorter cooling times, and long-term sustainability advantages. These findings support the adoption of hybrid nanofluids in thermoelectric cooling applications for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly refrigeration systems.

Pedagogical spectacle: performativity, platform capitalism, and the aesthetic capture of critique

    Aksakallı, Ayhan

This text is not merely a study of pedagogy but an intervention in pedagogy as spectacle. Structured in seven scenes, it examines how education in the digital age becomes a performance of visibility, an algorithmic rhythm, and a commodified production of knowledge. Drawing on critical theory, poststructuralist thought, and radical pedagogy, it refuses conventional academic form through fragmentation, rhythmic rupture, and narrative interruption. The text reveals how the student is shaped into a marketable subject, how critique is aestheticized into consumable content, and how the classroom functions as the stage of algorithmic flows. Each scene—from the commodified image of Freire to the pornographization of knowledge—produces opacity and resistance against smooth circulation. The central claim is radical: authentic pedagogical resistance lies not in teaching, performing, or concluding, but in silence, delay, and withdrawal as deliberate acts of opposition.

Multi-sensor data fusion based on the similarity measure and belief (Deng) entropy under neutrosophic evidence sets

Köseoğlu, Ali; Şahin, Rıdvan; Demir, Ümit

The Dempster–Shafer evidence theory is a very practical concept for handling uncertain information. The foundation of this theory lies in the basic probability assignment (BPA), which exclusively accounts for the degree of support attributed to focal elements (FEs). In this study, neutrosophic evidence sets (NESs) are defined to introduce additional probabilistic measures, aimed at addressing the uncertainty, imprecision, incompleteness, and inconsistency present in real-world information. The basic element of NESs is a neutrosophic basic probability assignment (NBPA), which consists of three components. The truth degree of FEs is represented by the first BPA, the second BPA represents the indeterminacy degree of FEs, and the last BPA characterizes the falsity degree of FEs. In NESs, each support degree of FEs is shown separately without any limitation. Therefore, the general concept of NESs is broader compared to traditional evidence sets and intuitionistic fuzzy evidence sets. Unlike the neutrosophic set (NS), the NBPA method assigns truth-support, uncertainty-support, and false-support degrees, as well as these support degrees, to single and multiple subsets in a discriminative framework. This paper aimed to develop some information measures for NESs, such as neutrosophic Deng entropy (NDE), neutrosophic cosine similarity measure, and neutrosophic Jousselme distance. Then, an improved method based on NDE and neutrosophic cosine similarity measure was established to combine contradictory evidence to increase the influence of reliable evidence on the one hand and to reduce the influence of unreliable evidence on the other hand. Finally, a case involving sensor data integration for target identification was studied to highlight the importance of these innovative ideas. The numerical example demonstrates that the proposed method provides more reliable and superior fusion performance compared to classical models, particularly in scenarios involving high conflict and uncertain information. However, the effectiveness of the method is partially influenced by the structure of the similarity matrix and the entropy parameters, which necessitates careful parameter tuning to achieve optimal results. These limitations are explicitly highlighted to serve as a guide for future improvements and broader applications of the method.

Effects of Autochthonous Starter Cultures on the Quality Characteristics of Traditionally Produced Sucuk

Kaya, Mükerrem; Sayın, Bilge; Çinar Topçu, Kübra; Kaban, Güzin

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of autochthonous strains (Pediococcus pentosaceus 128b, Latilactobacillus sakei S15, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum S91, L. plantarum S24 and Staphylococcus carnosus G109) used as mono and mixed starter cultures on the quality attributes of traditionally produced sucuk, a Turkish dry fermented sausage, in a local small-scale facility. At the end of ripening, samples underwent comprehensive microbiological and physicochemical analyses. The use of autochthonous starter cultures (ASC) showed no statistically significant influence on thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and water activity value. Lower pH values were observed in groups with autochthonous lactic acid bacteria strains (ALABS) compared to the control group. However, ALABS inhibited Micrococcus/Staphylococcus growth by rapidly lowering the pH, except in the groups with S. carnosus G109. The use of ASC led to an increase in the L* values of sucuk samples, except monoculture L. plantarum S91. The correlation heat map illustrating the relationships between the starter cultures and volatile compounds revealed that all groups containing L. plantarum S91 exhibit a volatile compound profile different from other single or mixed cultures. According to the results of the principal component analysis performed to determine the relationship between the chemical groups of the starter cultures and volatile compounds, the groups containing L. plantarum S91 differed from the other groups and showed positive correlations with phenols, furans, acids, terpenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, nitrogenous compounds, esters, and aliphatic hydrocarbons.
