Enhanced Pinning Properties of Laser-Irradiated Bulk MgB2 Superconductors

    Erdem, O.; Yanmaz, E.

In order to investigate the effect of laser irradiation on the superconducting properties of MgB2, a pellet-shaped sample was produced and cut into two pieces. The dot-shaped molten patterns, with the distance of 100 µm between them, were formed on the surface of one of the pieces by using an Nd:YVO4 laser. The grains of the irradiated sample were significantly grown due to the laser-induced sintering. The modified surface appeared to have dense and compacted grains as a result of increasing interconnectivity among the superconducting grains. The critical current densities at 5 K in a field of 3 T were found to be 5.38 × 104 and 8.96 × 104 A cm−2 for the reference and the irradiated samples, respectively. The increment of critical current density for the irradiated sample is presumably connected with the changing of pinning mechanism after the laser irradiation. For the irradiated sample which showed a higher value of critical current density at 5 K under high fields, Δκ pinning was obtained as a dominant pinning mechanism, while the normal point pinning was dominant for the reference one. These results point out that the superconducting properties of bulk MgB2 can be changed and improved via laser irradiation in a short time.

Microbial diversity of traditional kefir grains and their role on kefir aroma

    Dertli, Enes; Çon, Ahmet Hilmi

Kefir grains consist of rich bacterial and fungal microflora responsible for the production of this traditional fermented milk beverage with unique flavour properties. Here, a pyrosequencing approach was applied for the identification of microbial flora of four kefir grains collected from different regions of Turkey and the volatile compounds in kefir samples produced with these grains were determined. Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens presented in all grains at important levels and Enterobacter, Acinetobacter, Enterococcus and Pseudomonas spp. were observed in traditional kefir grains. The fungal microflora of kefir grains was dominated by yeast species and Dipodascaceae family was dominant and Saccharomyces cerevisiae presented in all grains. Other yeast species belonging to Kazachstania, Candida, Issatchenkia and Rhodotorula species were also detected in kefir grains. Volatile compounds of kefir samples were also diverse related to the microbial diversity of kefir grains. This study revealed the rich microflora of Turkish kefir grains and their interactions with the aromatic properties of kefir.

Performance analyses of gas turbine cogeneration plants

    Karaali, Rabi; Oztürk, Ilhan Tekin

In this study, some improving methods of gas turbine cogeneration cycles are applied on a simple cogeneration cycle. These methods are preheating air, preheating air and fuel, inlet air cooling by using evaporative cooling and absorption cooling. These cogeneration systems are evaluated with respect to energy efficiency (energy utilization factor), exergetic efficiency, electric and heat power, electric-heat energy rate, artificial thermal efficiency and fuel energy saving ratio and are compared with each other. In these analyses, the thermodynamic parameters such as compressing ratio, air and fuel mass ratio and compressor inlet temperatures of the cycles are used. It is concluded that these parameters can be listed from most effective to least effective as air fuel ratio, pressure ratio and compressor inlet temperature. It is also concluded that the most efficient cycle is found to be the air-fuel preheated cycle for obtaining more electric power and less heat power, and the simple cycle is the most suitable one for obtaining more heat power and less electric power.

Possibility-induced simplified neutrosophic aggregation operators and their application to multi-criteria group decision-making

    Şahin, Rıdvan; Liu, Peide

Simplified neutrosophic set (SNS) is an appropriate tool used to express the incompleteness, indeterminacy and uncertainty of the evaluation objects in decision-making process. In this study, we define the concept of possibility SNS including two types of information such as the neutrosophic performance provided from the evaluation objects and its possibility degree using a value ranging from zero to one. Then by extending the existing neutrosophic information, aggregation models for SNSs that cannot be used effectively to fusion the two different information described above, we propose two novel neutrosophic aggregation operators considering possibility, which are named as a possibility-induced simplified neutrosophic weighted arithmetic averaging operator and possibility-induced simplified neutrosophic weighted geometric averaging operator, and discuss their properties. Moreover, we develop a useful method based on the proposed aggregation operators for solving a multi-criteria group decision-making problem with the possibility simplified neutrosophic information, in which the weights of decision-makers and decision criteria are calculated based on entropy measure. Finally, a practical example is utilised to show the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Functional and Film-forming Properties of Mechanically Deboned Chicken Meat Proteins

    Saricaoglu, Furkan Turker; Turhan, Sadettin

In the present study, the functional properties of mechanically deboned chicken meat proteins (MDCM-Ps) were determined at different pH (2, 4, 6, 8 and 12), and film-forming properties were evaluated depending on MDCM-P (2, 3 and 4%) and glycerol (30, 40 and 50%) concentrations. The highest solubility, emulsifying and foaming properties were determined at pH 12. MDCM-P solutions showed non-polyelectrolyte behavior and gelation onset temperature was determined at 36°C. Film-forming properties of MDCM-P showed that the tensile strength decreased, and elongation at break increased as glycerol concentration increased. Films became more transparent with increasing glycerol and decreasing protein concentration, while water vapor permeability increased with increasing glycerol and protein concentration. Water sorption data of films were fitted to the Guggenheim, Anderson, and De Boer model. In general, equilibrium moisture content of films increased as glycerol level increased. Overall, the results showed that MDCM-P could be useful as a new protein source for both food and packaging industries.

L-shell differential cross-section and alignment of uranium at 59.54-keV photon energy

Akkuş, Tuba; Alım, Bünyamin; Yılmaz, Demet; Şahin, Yusuf

L X-ray differential cross-sections of uranium were calculated at several polar scattering angles (85°, 95°, 105°, 115°, 125°, and 135°) at 59.54-keV photon energy by using a Si(Li) detector. We observed that Ll and Lα X-rays were dependent on the polar scattering angle, whereas Lβ and Lγ X-rays were independent of the polar scattering angle. Therefore, the anisotropy parameters for Ll and Lα X-rays were obtained using the intensity ratios of Ll to Lγ X-rays and of Lα to Lγ X-rays to reduce some systematic errors.

Chinese postman problem approach for a large-scale conventional rail network in Turkey; [Primjena pristupa "problem kineskog poštara" na široku mrežu Turske željeznice]

Yılmaz, Mustafa; Çodur, Merve Kayacı; Yılmaz, Hamid

Every year, railways are inspected periodically to examine the status of rail tracks and ensure the safety of train operations of the railroad networks in Turkey. These inspection projects must be performed by several specialized machines with large and expensive equipment. Finding the optimum route of inspection machines that control through travelling all lines is critically important in terms of cost and distance. In current practice, determining the route of these machines is largerly manual and primarily relies on the knowledge and judgment of experts. This paper proposes Chinese Postman Problem (CPP) to solve the inspection machine routing problem. The objective is to minimize the total travel distance on the railroads by finding the shortest route. The proposed model is applied to a large-scale real world problem. Compared to the current practice the proposed approach significantly outperforms the reduced objective value by 20, 76%.

Antimicrobial and functional properties of lactic acid bacteria isolated from sourdoughs

Demirbaş, Fatmanur; İspirli, Hümeyra; Kurnaz, Asena Ayşe; Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin; Dertli, Enes

The technological and functional properties of 15 LAB species previously isolated from sourdough were determined in terms of antifungal and antibacterial activities, production of GABA as a functional component and phytase activity. All sourdough isolates were capable of producing GABA and Weissella paramesenteroides N-7 and Lactobacillus paralimentarius E-106 showed the highest and the lowest production levels as 18,43 mM and 3,39 mM, respectively determined by HPLC analysis. The antifungal activity of these strains were tested against Aspergillus niger and Penicillium chrysogenum and two strains Lactobacillus paraplantarum N-15 and L. paralimentarius E-106 showed significant inhibitory effects to these mould species. Generally, different levels of antibacterial activity of these species were observed against food-borne pathogens but only one strain showed low levels of inhibitory effect to Salmonella typhimurium but not the other strains. The PCR detection of several bacteriocin coding genes revealed that all strains were harboured at least one bacteriocin gene among the tested genes. Finally, all strains showed phytase activity but these activity was dependant on strain specific conditions. This study revealed some important techno-functional properties of sourdough LAB strains which can play crucial roles on sourdough technology.

Asymmetric epoxidation of enones using cumyl hydroperoxide and in situ generated zinc complexes of chiral pyrrolidinyl alcohols

Karaman, Halide Sedef; Kılıç, Hamdullah; Şahin, Engin

The homogeneous asymmetric epoxidation of a range of enones was carried out using cumyl hydroperoxide, diethylzinc, and chiral pyrrolidinyl alcohol-containing ligands to afford the corresponding epoxy ketones with enantioselectivities of ≤97% ee. Examination of the enantioselectivities obtained in the asymmetric epoxidation of enones using a range of chiral ligands indicated that synergy between the sterically bulky bicyclo[2.2.2]octane skeleton and the substituents attached to the carbinol moiety played an important role in determining the reaction enantioselectivity. The position and nature of the substituent on the aromatic ring of the enone also had a pronounced effect on the observed enantioselectivity.

Experimental determination of cohesion & internal friction angle on conventional concretes

Pul, Selim; Ghaffari, Amir; Öztekin, Ertekin; Hüsem, Metin; Demir, Serhat

Various failure criterions have been used for the nonlinear analysis of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. To get more accurate results from the analyses, the selected failure criterion must be appropriate with the characteristics of problem and the assumptions made in the criterion should comply with the characteristics of problem. In this study, an experimental investigation was carried out to determine the cohesion (c) and internal friction angle (?) values, which are in the compressive strength range of 14.4 MPa ≤ fcm cube ≤ 47.0 MPa (2.03 ksi ≤ fcm cube ≤ 6.82 ksi) that are used in failure criterions such as Mohr-Coulomb and Drucker-Prager preferred in end unit analyses for concrete and reinforced concrete structures. Tests are performed by using the direct shear test system, which is designed and produced for this study. Finally, cohesion and internal friction angle were determined between 2.94 and 12.34 MPa (0.43 and 1.79 ksi) and 29.8 and 41.7 degrees, respectively.

Concretes with synthetic aggregates for sustainability

Tekin, Ilker; Yasin Durgun, Muhammed; Gencel, Osman; Bilir, Turhan; Brostow, Witold; Hagg Lobland, Haley E.

We have used waste marble aggregates, marble dust and fly ash from thermic power plants as fillers in concretes for replacing natural aggregates. We have used two different kinds of cements. After curing, we have determined the workability (by slump tests), air content, unit weight, Schmidt hardness, ultrasound pulse velocity, compressive strength and carbonation depth. The concretes containing waste marble at least match or exceed the workability and strength of the control concrete type. Fly ash significantly improves the workability. Utilizing waste marble aggregate at the replacement ratio of 100% along with waste marble dust, fly ash and pozzolanic cements in concrete leads to lower cost – achieving at the same time environmentally friendly production process with decreased consumption of natural resources and energy. Our work also contributes to enhancement of sustainability by finding a use for marble waste and fly ash.

Alim, Zuhal; Kilinç, Namik; Şengül, Bülent; Beydemir, Şükrü

Aldose reductase (AR) inhibitors have vital importance in the treatment and prevention of diabetic complications. In this study, rat kidney AR was purified 19.34-fold with a yield of 3.49% and a specific activity of 0.88 U/mg using DE-52 Cellulose anion exchange chromatography, gel filtration chromatography and 2′5′ ADP Sepharose-4B affinity chromatography, respectively. After purification, the in vitro inhibition effects of some phenolic acids (tannic acid, chlorogenic acid, sinapic acid, protocatechuic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, α-resorcylic acid, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid and gallic acid) were investigated on purified enzyme. We determined IC50, Ki values and inhibition types of these phenolic acids. As a result, tannic and chlorogenic acid had a strong inhibition effect. On the other hand, gallic acid had a weak inhibition effect. In this study, all phenolic acids except for chlorogenic acid and p-coumaric acid showed non-competitive inhibition effects on rat kidney AR.
