- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Policy factors affecting international sporting success in Turkey from the perspective of the SPLISS model
Ersöz, G.; Kan, M.E.; Yenilmez, M. Ince; Kantar, G.
In recent years, research on elite sport policies has mainly focused on systems in Europe, North America and Australia. This study represents the first qualitative analysis of Turkey within the framework of the SPLISS model, aiming to fill the regional gap in the literature and offer original contributions regarding the model’s cultural and structural adaptability. In this context, the study aims to analyse the policy factors affecting international sporting success in Turkey. A total of 15 individuals–five athletes, five coaches and five sports managers–aged between 21 and 51 and actively involved in sport, participated in the study. A semi-structured interview technique was used, with questions prepared from the SPLISS model perspective, and the data were analysed using content analysis. The findings reveal that financial support for sport in Turkey is inadequate, there is no merit-based system in sports governance, the limited hours and content of physical education classes in schools reduce participation in sport, career support for athletes is insufficient, talent identification projects are dysfunctional, coach education has significant shortcomings and there is a lack of collaboration between sport science researchers and practitioners. The study indicates that Turkey’s sports policies require comprehensive restructuring through reforms in several areas, including equitable financial support, merit-based governance, enhanced collaboration and coordination among sport institutions, long-term strategic planning, strengthening school-based sport, sustainable career support for athletes and fostering stronger cooperation between researchers and practitioners in sport sciences.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Nurses’ Workplace Discrimination Experiences and Their Reflections on Career Development: A Qualitative Study
Koroglu Kaba, Nagihan; Apaydin, Emine; Kulakaç, Nurşen
Aim: This study was conducted to examine how nurses experience discriminatory behaviors in the workplace and how these experiences are reflected in their career development. Background: Although discrimination constitutes a significant challenge in nurses’ professional lives, qualitative research examining how these experiences influence their career development processes remains limited. Methods: This phenomenological study was conducted with nurses working in a public hospital in Turkey. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 21 nurses during the study. Participants were selected from various clinical settings through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step content analysis method. Ethics committee approval was obtained for this study. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist guided the study reporting. Results: Five main themes with seven subthemes emerged: (1) Discrimination Experiences (types of discrimination, sources of discrimination, emotions/feelings), (2) Reporting Behavior (decision and consequences of reporting, reasons for not reporting), (3) Impact of Discrimination on Career Development (supportive effect, hindering effect), (4) Coping Strategies, and (5) Suggestions for Preventing Discrimination. Discussion: These themes highlight that discrimination is a multidimensional phenomenon and that holistic approaches must be developed at emotional, structural, professional, and institutional levels to cope with it. Conclusion: For some nurses, discrimination acts as a transformative process that supports career development, while for others, it represents a significant barrier to professional advancement. Implications for Nursing/Nursing Policy: The findings highlight the need to strengthen reporting mechanisms, establish a supportive work culture, and implement inclusive institutional policies that promote career development.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ4EXAMINATION OF FOLK BELIEFS IN YOMRA DISTRICT ACCORDING TO FUNCTIONAL THEORY
Kabak, Turgay
When looking at studies on folk beliefs in Turkey, we generally find two types of publications. The majority of research focus on revealing the origins of folk beliefs, I which identified through fieldwork, in old Turkish religion and mythology, and I establishing connections between the past and the present. The studies in the second group involve analyses of folk beliefs collected from one region of Turkey with those from other regions, or with folk beliefs from different regions of the Turkic world using a comparative method. There are scarcely any studies that address the functional dimension of folk beliefs and examine them from this perspective. The existing studies are quite narrow in scope. There is no study that extensively examines folk beliefs collected from a specific region according to the functional theory, as done in this study, which is one of the context-centered theories used by many researchers in the field of folklore. In this study, folk beliefs obtained through the field collection method from the district of Yomra, located in the Trabzon province of the Eastern Black Sea I region of Turkey, were analyzed according to functional theory. As a result of the I examination conducted, it has been found that the folk beliefs in the region have eleven functions which are: helping to protect public health, assisting public veterinary, protecting from evil spirits and beings, ensuring abundance and prosperity and protecting from famine, bringing good luck and averting bad luck, predicting and directing natural phenomena, transferring intangible cultural heritage, helping to make prophecy, establishing a connection with sacred, reconciling the old and the new, and securing social unity. Thus, the folk beliefs of a region have been examined for the first time with a holistic approach, from a functional perspective, and a model is developed that can be applied to other regions as well as folk beliefs will remain.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Experiences of Nurse Managers in the 2023 Kahramanmaras, Turkey Earthquakes: A Qualitative Study
Koroglu Kaba, Nagihan; Bal, Betul; Ozturk, Havva
BACKGROUND: Nurse managers play a critical role in disaster response and management; yet research on their experiences in earthquakes remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the experiences of nurse managers in the Kahramanmaras, Turkey, earthquakes. METHODS: A phenomenological approach was used to guide this study, exploring the lived experiences of nurse managers who worked during the 2023 earthquakes in Kahramanmaras, Turkey. Purposive sampling identified participants, and data were collected 2-3 months postearthquake, from April to May 2023, via semi-structured interviews conducted via social media. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze the interview data. RESULTS: A total of 11 nurse managers were interviewed for the study. Fifty-five percent were between the ages of 35 and 44, 64% were female and had a bachelor's degree. Five themes emerged from the data: "being unprepared"(predisaster phase), "emotional difficulties,""communication and coordination issues,""resource shortages"(disaster event phase), and "evaluation and professional satisfaction"(postdisaster phase). CONCLUSION: The study found that most nurse managers reported feeling unprepared for the earthquake despite institutional disaster management practices. They struggled with managing their emotions, resource shortages, and communication-coordination issues. These experiences underscore the need for enhanced disaster training and preparedness for nurses. Collaboration among international health organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and governments is essential to develop disaster management plans to optimize nurses as early responders.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1Food Price Bubbles: Food Price Indices of Turkey, the FAO, the OECD, and the IMF
Akyol Özcan, Kübra
Food price bubbles are a phenomenon in which the cost of some food items or food commodities climbs quickly and unreasonably before collapsing due to reasons such as speculation, supply and demand imbalances, meteorological occurrences, and governmental actions. Governments and academics keep an eye on food prices to spot and address these bubbles. The aim of this paper is to analyze the food price bubble phenomenon despite the global slowdown by examining its origins, consequences, and policy solutions. The study’s contribution lies in its investigation of the presence of a potential bubble formation in food prices, which have experienced a surge globally and particularly in Turkey in recent years. The research examines the behavior of bubble formation in food prices in Turkey, the FAO, the OECD, and the IMF between 1992 and 2022 using the ADF, SADF, and GSADF tests. These tests can help identify when asset prices deviate significantly from their fundamental values and may be at risk of a sharp correction. The TUR, FAO, OECD, and IMF variables all show distinct bubble formations, with the TUR variable having 130 periods from 1995 to 2006, the FAO having 8 price bubble occurrences, the OECD having 12 different bubble formations, and the IMF having 4 distinct bubble formations. The results indicate the existence of food price bubbles that demonstrate disparities from their inherent values grounded in market fundamentals.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022The Dynamics Affecting the Export-Import Ratio in Turkey: A Hybrid Model Proposal with Econometrics and Machine Learning Approach
Özden, Erdemalp
The indicators related to foreign trade are conventionally measured in a currency or as the ratio of the country's gross domestic products. The ratio of exports to imports, alternatively, provides more useful results when comparing the foreign trade performance of economies both over time and with other countries as a unit-free indicator. In this study, the macroeconomics and financial determinants affecting this ratio are examined both econometrically and using the machine learning method. In this context, the autoregressive distributed lag model method was first used to investigate the relationship between normalized gross domestic products, exchange rate, consumer price index, producer price index, crude oil and Turkey's ratio of exports to imports rate between 2010-2021, monthly. Long-term analysis showed that the 1% depreciation of the Turkish Liras against the US dollar increased the ratio of exports to imports rate by 0.7 points. In addition, a 1% increase in consumer price index will increase ratio of exports to imports by 1.9 points, while a 1% increase in producer price index will cause a -0.8 point decrease on the ratio of exports to imports. Then, the pattern between the variables was analyzed with quadratic support vector machine, a machine learning method. Finally, the novel ARDL-SVM hybrid method was developed, and the pattern between the variables was examined. The findings revealed that although the econometric method provided a broader scope for interpreting the relationships between variables, the developed ARDL-SVM method successfully captured patterns between variables.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ3The role of Turkey in the world hazelnut production and exporting
Uzundumlu, Ahmet Semih; Kurtoğlu, Seval; Şerefoğlu, Coşkun; Algur, Zafer
The aim of this study is to estimate the future of the global hazelnut sector for 2019-2025 using the data of 1961-2018. ARIMA model was used to forecast hazelnut production and export quantity. Hirschman Herfindahl Index (HHI) and Concentration Ratios (CR) have been used to determine market status. According to HHI and CR, the world hazelnut market was oligopoly in 1961-2018 and the biggest player in this market was Turkey. Because Turkey was the largest manufacturer and marketer of hazelnut in the industry, 64% of the production and 67% of the exports of world hazelnut were provided by Turkey as the average in the period 2011-2018. Turkey thus determines the world price in hazelnut. According to the concentration ratio, CR1 will be 0.63 and 0.67 in the export and production; this means that about 63-67% of the world hazelnut production and export will have been provided by Turkey from 2019 to 2025. The number of countries producing, and exporting hazelnuts has risen from 13 to 32, and 9 to 58, respectively in the past fifty-eight years in the world. According to the findings of this study, it was forecasted that the competition degree of Turkey’s hazelnut export market will decrease during the period from 2019 to 2025. The results obtained from this study will help policymakers to monitor the way for hazelnut marketing in Turkey.

In recent years, the popularity of natural products and natural product formulations has increased due to their beneficial effects on health. As a part of this trend, Lamiaceae family members have attracted attention due to their rich bioactive properties. Although the Stachys rizeensis R.Bhattacharjee plant is an endemic plant species in Turkey, no studies focus on its characterization. Hence, the present study aims to demonstrate the anatomical, morphological and phytochemical characterization of S. rizeensis in Turkey. In the first stage of the study, anatomical and trichome morphological characterization was performed to contribute to the taxonomic definition of S. rizeensis was found to be anatomically different from some other previously studied Stachys sp. by showing lacunar collenchyma type, uncertain cambium at the corners, two or three rows of endodermis in certain areas in the stem and two rows of palisade parenchyma, capitate and peltate glandular trichomes in the leaf. In the second stage, the phenolic profile, total phenolic/flavonoid content and antioxidant activity of the plant extracts prepared using solvents with different polarities (ethanol, methanol, water, ethyl acetate and hexane) were tested to determine the phytochemical content of the plant. The phytochemical analysis supported by chemometric analysis (PCA and HCA) revealed that methanol was the most efficient organic solvent for the extraction of the phytochemical compounds of the plant. Additionally, it was observed that chlorogenic acid (1842.40–217,086.19 mg/kg), verbascoside (2591.43–204,429.81 mg/kg), luteolin (3579.56–88,636.14 mg/kg) and kaempferol (9706.30–50,340.93 mg/kg) compounds were present at maximum levels in this plant, in which 31 different phenolic compounds were scanned using LC-MS/MS. In addition, results obtained from the phytochemical analysis revealed that S. rizeensis is a valuable plant that can be used for medical protection/treatment and that it could also have a variety of culinary applications. The present study served as the first original report regarding the chemical profile and anatomical characteristics of S. rizeensis (Lamiaceae) from Turkey.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ4Innovative flow risk assessment with climate change perspective in Yesilirmak Basin
Serancam, Ugur; Dabanli, Ismail
Surface temperature increase due to global warming results in polar ice melting, snow cover thinning, changes in precipitation anomaly. All these phenological effects alert engineers, planners and administrators to be more sensitive against climate change-based risk effects on water structures. Vulnerability to natural disasters such as floods and droughts are expected to occur more frequent than past. Therefore, design and potential evaluation of water structures such as transmission channels, water wells, dams and hydraulic power generation facilities need to be re-evaluation. This re-evaluations procedure must be updated by taking into consideration climate change impacts with their risk assessments. For this purpose, the climate change-based risk levels are calculated from historically available records through possible trend tendencies, which are expressed in terms of trend slope. It has been observed that, in general, the climate change impacts are not significant on precipitation and runoff. This is due to the low trend slopes in the standardized hydro-meteorological time series. This point has been documented for Yesilirmak basin, where the climate change impact is very limited.

Selvitopu, Abdullah; Kaya, Metin
As strengths and weaknesses are regarded as internal features of an organization, the present study focused on strengths and weaknesses of Turkish public universities by analyzing the SWOTs (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) of twenty higher education institutions. By applying qualitative content analytical tools, we tried to make some comparisons, twenty universities, ten ranked at the top and ten at the bottom of the URAP list, were chosen to analyze the strengths and weaknesses. Findings show that all universities top or bottom ones have internal strengths and weaknesses on their own. The strengths of universities differ according to their size, field of service, structure, history and geographical locations. Top universities which are in big size, have a deeply rooted history and situated in a better geographical location can enjoy the strengths as qualified faculty members, organizational culture, internationalization process, infrastructure and good alumni relations. On the other hand, bottom universities which have not got those advantages deal with other strengths such as young faculty members, organizational support and internal communication. As for the weaknesses, top universities need more budget and acceptable rate of faculty member and student. Bottom ones need more qualified faculty members, students and staff. As they are located in disadvantageous regions, they are in need of some promotions to attract faculties, staff, national and international students. In addition, they also should be aware of the contributions of good alumni relations.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ2The relationship between housing prices and inflation rate in Turkey: Evidence from panel Konya causality test
Korkmaz, Özge
Purpose: Human beings need shelter as the beginning of their existence. Same holds true for people who live in Turkey as it is a cultural and traditional reason to be the host and endeavor to buy a home even if one has to pay the debt for years. Another factor that is important for individuals and even for countries is the inflation rate. In this context, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether the 26 regions of Turkey are affected by the inflationary pressure, specifically in the housing price index (HPI). Design/methodology/approach: For this purpose, data from 2010:01 to 2019:01 and the consumer price index (CPI), as well as HPI have been used. The causal relationship between the variables is analyzed by Konya Causality (2006) test. Findings: The key results suggest that HPI causes inflationary pressures in some regions. Research limitations/implications: The study has some limitations in terms of data set and scope. These are as follows: although there are many variables affecting housing prices, this study aims to investigate the causal link between inflation and housing prices. In addition, only the CPI and HPI variables were provided on a monthly basis in the 2010-2019 period for 26 regions due to the aim of making regional propositions in the investigation of this relationship. For these reasons, different macroeconomic variables could not be studied. Originality/value: This study makes the following contribution to the literature. While the majority of existing literature investigates the relationship between housing prices and inflation from an empirical perspective for country, very few studies have been for the sub-regions and also these studies have focused on only some sub-regions. In other words, in the literature review, a study has observed that Turkey has to examine the relationship between the housing price and inflation variables for all sub-regions in particular. To overcome this deficiency in the literature, this study aims to investigate the relationship between housing price and inflation for 26 regions.

The reforms to be made in relation to the determination of the relationship between inflation rates and loans in a country are very effective in the success of the anti-inflation programs. Within this context, the aim of this study to investigate the impact of utilization rates of consumer loans as well as commercial and corporate credit cards on the volatility of consumer price index (CPI) and producer price index (PPI) in Turkey for the 2005:12-2018:1 period. In this study, the interaction between variables was investigated by using symmetric and asymmetric conditional volatility models. As a result of the study, it was found that the rates of credit use raised the volatility of inflation rates while the use of installment commercial loans and corporate credit cards reduced their volatility.
