Çakır, Zekai; Erbaş, Ülfet; Gönen, Mevlüt; Ceyhan, Mehmet Ali; Öktem, Tuncay; Kul, Murat; Dilek, Ahmet Naci; Güzel, Sema

Background: Earthquakes are calamities of devastating nature that induce longterm post traumatic stress on affected victims. As such, they are recognized worldwide as being huge sources of stress. In this research study, the first objective is to assess the level of trauma and earthquake stress of university students who exercise and those who do not. Methods: This study utilized the descriptive survey research method. The sample comprised 378 male and 300 female students who experienced the socially detrimental 7.7 Mw and 7.6 Mw earthquakes in Turkey on February 6, 2023. The data were both face-to-face and via computer-administered questionnaire with the tools of “Post-Earthquake Trauma Level Scale” and “Earthquake Stress Coping Strategies Scale.” After checking for normality, the parametric tests were used, the t-test to compare two groups of data, and ANOVA for three or more groups of data. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analyses were performed to compare the interactions between students who exercise and those who do not. Results: The study found that gender affected trauma levels, with female students (X = 73.483) exhibiting significantly higher trauma levels than male students (X = 68.799) (p < 0.001). Students who engaged in regular physical activity (X = 67.71) were found to have lower trauma levels compared to those who did not exercise (X = 71.97). Participants who feared being caught by the earthquake at home or school (X = 73.32), experienced the loss of someone close (X = 88.10) or believed that adequate precautions against the earthquake had not been taken (X = 71.73) had higher trauma scores. According to the results of the ANOVA test, students from the Departments of Sports Sciences (X = 69.78) and Religious Studies (X = 69.63) were observed to have lower trauma levels. Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive and moderate relationship between trauma levels and earthquake stress coping strategies among students who engaged in regular physical activity (r =.176, p < 0.01). Conclusions: The research identified that factors such as gender, regular exercise, the experience of losing a loved one, and the perception that insufficient precautions were taken all significantly influence trauma levels. Moreover, the findings highlighted that regular physical exercise serves as an effective strategy for managing and coping with trauma.

Breaking the silence on late-life depression: uncovering the drivers of help-seeking in Türkiye’s ageing population

Ercan, Uğur; Apaydın, Emine; Alkan, Ömer

Background: Due to the prevalence of physical health issues among older adults, depression remains a significant health concern, which is often overlooked. Understanding the factors influencing the likelihood of seeking psychological support plays an important role in effectively managing depression in later life, where psychological support has a crucial role. This study aims to examine the factors associated with the likelihood of receiving psychological support among individuals aged 60 years and older experiencing depression in Türkiye. Methods: This study used microdata from the Türkiye Health Surveys conducted by Turkish Statistical Institute in 2016, 2019, and 2022. Gompit, binary logistic regression, and CHAID analyses were used to identify variables associated with psychological support-seeking behavior among older adults with depression. Results: The analysis revealed that general health status, illness status, gender, education level, and difficulty in healthcare payment significantly influenced the likelihood of receiving psychological support among older adults with depression. Conclusion: The results achieved in this study indicate that among older adults experiencing depression, women, those with higher educational levels, and those with existing illnesses are more likely to seek psychological support. Based on these results, it is recommended to develop educational programs to raise societal awareness about the importance of psychological support and to inform health policies accordingly.

Death anxiety and death literacy among Turkish patients with chronic diseases: a cross-sectional study

Semerci Çakmak, Vahide; Seven, Ahmet; Sönmez Sari, Ebru

Background: Death anxiety is common in patients with chronic diseases. Death literacy is a novel theoretical framework that enables patients to discuss death, accept it as a natural aspect of life, and get a deeper comprehension of it. However, it is unclear whether there is a relationship between death literacy and death anxiety. Furthermore, death literacy has not been sufficiently researched in Turkish society. This study investigated the levels of death anxiety and death literacy among Turkish patients with chronic diseases and the factors affecting death anxiety. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of Turkish patients with chronic diseases (n = 225). The data were collected with the Turkish Death Anxiety Scale and the Death Literacy Index. Pearson correlation, independent samples t test, One-Way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression were employed to analyse the data. Results: There exists a negative moderate correlation between death anxiety and death literacy. It has been determined that the factors that most influence patients’ fear of death are their level of death literacy and gender. These factors explained 12.8% of the variance in death anxiety (R2 = 0.128, F = 3.153, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The results suggest that death literacy level and gender were found to be factors affecting death anxiety of patients. Women have higher death anxiety scores. While the level of death literacy of Turkish patients with chronic diseases increases, their death anxiety decreases. The findings of the study were believed to offer a comprehensive information for healthcare practitioners in the management of such patients.

Durukan, Erdil; Aydin, Gokhan; Goktepe, Mehmet; Cicek, Guner; Guder, Ferhat; Isik, Ozkan

Background: The importance of dynamic and static stretching exercises on motoric abilities before an athletic performance is well known. However, there is limited information about their effects on balance performance. For this reason, this study aimed to investigate the acute effects of static and dynamic stretching exercises on wrestlers’ balance performance and compare wrestlers’ balance levels according to their wrestling styles. Method: A total of 28 wrestlers who performed dynamic stretching (n = 14) and static stretching (n = 14) protocols voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected using Togu Challenge Disc 2.0. An independent samples t-test was applied to compare the data that were determined to show normal distribution. Results: When comparing dynamic balance according to warm-up protocols, it was found that there was a significant difference in favor of wrestlers who performed dynamic stretching (p = 0.023). However, no statistically significant difference was found between static and dynamic stretching groups in terms of static balance (p = 0.238). Additionally, while a significant difference was observed in the wrestlers’ dynamic balance scores in both dynamic and static stretching exercises in favor of freestyle wrestlers (p = 0.008; p = 0.022), a significant difference was found in static balance scores in favor of Greco-Roman wrestlers (p = 0.014; p = 0.018). Conclusion: Dynamic stretching exercises were found to support wrestlers’ balance performance more than static stretching. The results showed that the different warm-up protocols applied before training and competition can have different effects on the wrestlers’ performance. Therefore, it is suggested that wrestlers should prefer warm-up protocols including dynamic stretching exercises to optimize pre-performance balance outcomes.

The relationship between emotional intelligence levels, stress management skills and hormonal and cerebral responses in university students

    Bayraktar, Bülent; Battal, Fetullah

Background: Emotional intelligence is a person’s ability, capacity and ability to understand, use, understand, manage, anticipate, manage and direct the emotions of oneself or others. Students with high levels of emotional intelligence express themselves better, are more resistant to stress in their lives, and are individuals who can direct their emotions. Leaders with strong emotional intelligence will create synergy for all employees. Therefore, emotional intelligence and stress management skills are important issues in the field of leadership and organizational behavior. At the same time, emotional intelligence and stress management skills interact with hormones. This study aims to examine the emotional intelligence levels and hormone (apelin, cortisol) and cerebral (Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)) response of 4th-year students of the faculty of health sciences at the university, who are potential managers of the future in terms of some variables. Methods: The research was conducted using the cross-sectional data method with 167 university students aged 18–24 who were reported to be clinically healthy in Türkiye. Apelin, cortisol hormone and BDNF levels in the participants’ saliva samples were analyzed using the ELISA technique. The relationship between emotional intelligence level and total scores from the stress coping scale and salivary apelin, cortisol and BDNF levels were evaluated. Results: In the study, it was determined that the average level of apelin hormone in saliva was “2.36 ± 0.076)’’ ng/mL in girls and “2.57 ± 0.071’’ ng/mL in boys. In girls, the BDNF level was “3.19 ± 0.97’’ and the cortisol level was “2.04 ± 0.72’’. BDNF level in boys is “3.41 ± 0.94’’and cortisol level is “1.92 ± 0.59’’. There is a significant difference between the participants’ allowances (income levels) and the average levels of salivary apelin hormone, BDNF and emotional intelligence scale (p < 0.01). A positive, strong and statistically significant relationship was found between the participants’ emotional intelligence level and stress management skills and apelin and BDNF levels, and a negative, strong and statistically significant relationship was found between salivary cortisol levels (p˂0.01). Conclusions: High emotional intelligence and stress management skills are an important element of strategic importance for a successful management and professional success process in individuals who will work in fields that need people such as health, marketing, law, consultancy, medicine, teaching and the service sector. Our study determined that as university students’ emotional intelligence levels strengthened, the participants’ stress management skills, salivary apelin, and BDNF levels increased, and cortisol hormone levels decreased. As a result, monitoring and examining apelin, BDNF, cortisol hormones can be useful parameters in evaluating the interaction between individuals’ emotional intelligence level and stress management skills and hormone response.

Preservice teachers’ attitudes toward pedagogical humour: the role of physical activity, sociodemographic factors, and academic discipline

Çakır, Zekai; Çatıkkaş, Fatih; Türkmen, Mutlu; Şengönül, Abdullah; Yaman, Menzure Sibel; Öktem, Tuncay; Gönen, Mevlüt; Güzel, Sema; Yel, Kader

Background: Humour in educational contexts is not merely an element of entertainment but a powerful pedagogical tool that reduces anxiety, enhances motivation, strengthens classroom climate, and facilitates learning. While affiliative and anxiety-reducing functions of humour foster social bonds, it is well documented that hostile or aggressive humour can undermine students’ self-concept. For this reason, humour must be employed with careful consideration in pedagogical settings. Although recent research has increasingly examined the associations between humour, psychological resilience, cognitive flexibility, and social interaction, studies evaluating preservice teachers’ humour attitudes concerning lifestyle factors (e.g., physical activity) and socio-demographic variables remain limited. The present study seeks to address this gap by situating the multidimensional nature of humour at the intersection of pedagogy, lifestyle, and cultural context. Methods: The study, conducted within a cross-sectional survey design, included 766 preservice teachers (397 male, 369 female) enrolled at various universities in Turkey during the 2023–2024 academic year. Participants were classified as physically active or inactive based on WHO and ACSM criteria. The Attitude Scale Toward the Use of Humour in Education (ASTUHE) was employed as the data collection instrument. The scale consists of 17 items grouped into three subscales: PHNE (Perceiving Humour as Necessary in Education), ELI (Effect on Language and Instruction), and CCM (Contribution to Classroom Management). In Balta’s (2016) original study, internal consistency was reported as α = 0.89, whereas in the present research, internal consistency was α = 0.887. For the analyses, independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc tests (LSD, Tukey HSD, Bonferroni) were conducted, with effect sizes (Cohen’s d, η², ηp²) also reported. Results: Preservice teachers generally evaluated humour as a positive element in education. Students who engaged in regular physical activity reported significantly higher attitude scores than their inactive peers (M = 3.51 vs. 2.86; p <.001, d = 0.62). Female students exhibited more favourable attitudes than males (p <.05, d = 0.61–0.98). Likewise, students involved in team sports demonstrated significantly higher scores than those engaged in individual sports (p <.001, d = 0.60–0.96). Differences were also observed across academic discipline, class level, family humour climate, income level, and place of upbringing (p <.05, ηp² = 0.015–0.027). In particular, students raised in urban centres evaluated the functions of humour in education more positively, likely due to their exposure to broader cultural and social stimuli. These findings underscore that humour is not merely a pedagogical skill but a multidimensional phenomenon shaped by lifestyle, social environment, and cultural factors. Conclusions: Regarding contribution to the literature, the study illuminates the relationship between humour and lifestyle factors, while simultaneously revealing the multilayered structure of humour through the combined examination of diverse socio-demographic variables. Moreover, the positive (affiliative, supportive) and negative (sarcastic, aggressive) aspects of humour are contextualised and discussed in light of the literature. Although the cross-sectional design and reliance on self-report data limit causal inference, the findings suggest that preservice teachers’ humour awareness and the availability of physical activity opportunities in university settings may enhance pedagogical skills and psychosocial resilience. Future longitudinal and experimental research could more clearly elucidate the causal mechanisms linking humour and lifestyle factors.

The impact of the Dark Triad personalities and parental interaction patterns in predicting the tendency toward risky behaviors among adolescent girls in Ardabil, Iran in 2024

Motavalli, Roya; Shayeghi, Hanieh; Mousazadeh, Tavakkol; Apay, Serap Ejder; Aktaş, Elif Odabaşı

Background: The escalating prevalence of risky behaviors during adolescence has emerged as a grave threat to public health, posing one of the most significant psychological, social, and health-related challenges globally. These behaviors impact the individual and have negative consequences on families and society. As a pressing concern for communities, healthcare organizations, and social policymakers, identifying factors leading adolescents toward risky behaviors is paramount and urgent. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted in Ardabil, Iran, in 2024. Using convenience sampling, 200 s-year high school girls with an average age of 17 were selected. Participants were asked to complete three questionnaires: the Dark Triad Personality Test, the Revised Family Communication Patterns Scale (RFCP), and the Questionnaire of Risky Behaviors (QRB). The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis, utilizing SPSS version 20. Results: The findings revealed a significant positive correlation (p < 0.01) between machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, and the conformity interaction pattern with a tendency toward risky behaviors in adolescents. Additionally, there was a significant negative correlation (p < 0.01) between the conversation interaction pattern and risky behaviors. The results further indicated that 30.4% (p < 0.01) of the variance in risky behavior tendencies in adolescent girls could be explained by the Dark Triad personality traits. In comparison, the interaction patterns of conversation and parental conformity could account for 37% (p < 0.01). Conclusions: This study suggests that the Dark Triad personality traits and parental interaction patterns can effectively predict adolescent girls’ tendencies toward risky behaviors. These results underscore the need for effective management strategies addressing these variables in school programs to provide early interventions that may prevent the escalation of risky behaviors among adolescents.

Kirbaş, Zila Özlem; Bayraktar, Bülent; Aktaş, Elif Odabaşi

Background: Adolescence is the period in which physical and emotional changes occur through hormones, the individual acquires gender characteristics and prepares for the adult role psychologically and physically. Dysfunctional attitudes are beliefs and attitudes that can lead to depression by causing negative thoughts about oneself, others, and the future.Dysfunctional attitudes negatively affect children’s mental health. Hormones have a significant impact on human behavior and cognitive functions. However, little is known about the role and influence of hormones on dysfunctional attitudes. Apelin is a hormone responsible for controlling emotions by regulating emotional behavior. The level of dysfunctional attitudes is one of the important issues in nursing practice in terms of protecting and improving children’s mental health. However, little is known about the role and impact of hormones on dysfunctional attitudes. This study aimed to examine adolescents’ dysfunctional attitudes and salivary apelin hormone levels in terms of sociodemographic variables. Methods: The study was conducted in a relational screening model with 151 adolescents aged 9–14 years who were reported to be clinically healthy in Türkiye. Apelin hormone levels were analyzed by ELISA technique in the saliva samples of the participants. In the evaluation of dysfunctional attitudes, the relationship between the score obtained from the dysfunctional attitude scale and salivary hormone levels was evaluated. Results: In the study, a negative, strong and statistically significant correlation was found between the average salivary apelin hormone level and dysfunctional attitudes of adolescents (p =.000). Mean salivary hormone levels of apelin in adolescent girls and boys were 0.696 (SD 0.052) ng/ml, respectively; while 0.671 (SD 0.047) ng/ml was determined (p =.002), dysfunctional attitudes scale scores were 52.95 (SD 14.43); it was determined as 59.04 (SD 14.22) (p =.006). On the other hand, the highest average salivary apelin hormone level (p =.038). and the lowest level of dysfunctional attitudes were determined in adolescent girls aged 13–14 years (p =.028). Conclusions: In our study, we found that while the salivary apelin hormone levels of adolescents decreased, their dysfunctional attitudes increased. We found that adolescents’ dysfunctional attitudes decreased with age. In contrast, apelin hormone levels increased with age.

The impact of inactivity during the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical performance of high school athletes

Asan, Selim; Ulupınar, Süleyman; Özbay, Serhat; Namlı, Sevinç; Gençoğlu, Cebrail; Canyurt, Ferhat; Çingöz, Yunus Emre; Özkara, Abdullah Bora

Background/Objective: This study was conducted during the 2019–2020 academic year to evaluate the impact of participation in school sports on students’ Body Mass Index (BMI) and Assessing Levels of Physical Activity (ALPHA) test scores. Interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a suspension of in-person education, the study resumed in September 2021, refocusing on the effects of pandemic-induced inactivity on the physical fitness levels of the same cohort. Methods: The study included twenty-nine male high school students (age: 17,24 ± 0,73 years), divided into thirteen athletes (participating in sports such as football, basketball, and track) and sixteen non-athletic counterparts. They underwent reassessment using the ALPHA test battery, evaluating cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, and motor skills fitness. Data were analyzed using independent and paired samples t-tests and a two-way repeated measures ANOVA to assess changes over time and between groups. Discriminant function analysis evaluated the ALPHA test’s ability to classify students based on their athletic status pre- and post-pandemic. Results: Initially, athlete students exhibited significantly better BMI, 20 m shuttle run, and 4 × 10 m speed run scores compared to their non-athlete peers. After the pandemic, only the 20 m shuttle run scores remained significantly higher for athletes, with diminished distinctions in other fitness areas. The classification accuracy of the ALPHA test battery decreased from 89.7 to 75.9% post-pandemic. Conclusion: The enforced sedentary lifestyle due to the COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected all students, particularly diminishing health-related fitness parameters such as body composition, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal strength, and motor skills. Students previously engaged in regular physical activity, notably school athletes, experienced significant fitness declines. This highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to encourage active lifestyles among youth in the post-pandemic phase, aiming to avert long-term adverse health outcomes.

Kirbaş, Zila Özlem; Odabaşi Aktaş, Elif; Özkan, Hava

Background: The transition to motherhood is an important life event in a woman’s life and represents an important developmental process that brings physical, psychological and social changes to gain a new role. However, research on the transition to motherhood in Turkish society is scarce. There is a need for a comprehensive, practical and reliable tool to evaluate the transition to motherhood in primiparous mothers. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Transition of Primiparous Becoming Mothers Scale (TMP-S) to evaluate the transition process of primiparous mothers to motherhood. Methods: This methodological research was carried out in obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics, pediatric outpatient clinics, and family health centers of a hospital in Türkiye. The sample consisted of primiparous mothers of 0 to 6- month-old babies who visited clinics and family health centers for routine postnatal examinations (n = 305). After evaluating the language equivalence and content validity of the scale, test-retest reliability, internal consistency and construct validity were examined. Factor analysis, Pearson’s correlation, retest reliability, and Cronbach’s alpha were employed to evaluate structural validity and reliability. Results: The final TPM-S had two dimensions with 25 items. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution, which accounted for 59.276% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model fit of the two-factor model also reached a satisfactory model ft after modification. The comparative fit index was 0.894, the Tucker‒Lewis index was 0.882, and the root mean square error of approximation was 0.079. The content validity index of the scale ranged from 0.56 ~ 0.77. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.93 for the total scale, and the test–retest reliability was 0.96. Conclusions: It is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating the transition to motherhood among primiparous mothers of 0 to 6 month-old babies in Türkiye. Turkish researchers and healthcare professionals can routinely apply this measurement tool to primiparous mothers in the first six months after birth to evaluate their transition to motherhood.

The study group’s demographic and qualitative data were collected in the first week of September 2023. The member checking process was completed in the third following week. A thematic analysis checklist was used to ensure the reliability of the thematic analysis. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting of Qualitative Research (COREQ) guidelines were followed. Results: The experiences of 14 patients (22.78 ± 3.76 years, all males) were summarized into four themes that emerged from the data analysis process: ‘The Distinctions in the Participants’ Experiences Regarding the Moment of Injury,’ ‘Gathering Information about the ACL Injury,’ ‘Factors That Facilitate The Treatment Process and Reinforce Positive Experiences,’ and ‘Desperate Plight: Main Points of Patients’ Negative Experiences.’ Based on the main themes, there were 14 subthemes. Conclusions: Our study revealed that varying perceptions of ACL injury presented by the participants, which were caused by all stakeholders, including themselves, the professional environment, family members, social network, and the healthcare staff, showed that the physical and psychological impacts of the injury were observed in different severity levels at each stage of the process. We believe that an extensive guide for athletes with ACL injuries that includes all components of well-being and displays the required details for the sports club/coach, family/companion, and physician.

    Küçükkaya, Burcu; Işık, Hafsa Kübra

Background: Pregnant women turn to holistic complementary and alternative medicine to cope with problems associated with the changes they experience during pregnancy. This study aimed to determine the attitudes of pregnant women in Türkiye toward holistic complementary and alternative medicine and influencing factors. Methods: This cross-sectional exploratory study was carried out between June and November 2022 with a web-based questionnaire distributed via social media and communication platforms. Two hundred and twenty-one pregnant women participated in the study. A "Participant Identification Form" and the "Attitudes towards Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire" were used to collect the data. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine correlations between variables and scale scores. Results: It was determined that 84.2% of the participants had knowledge about traditional and complementary therapies, and 77.8% used traditional and complementary therapies. The participants reported that they preferred faith (77.4%), energy healing (76.9%), massage (75.6%), diet (74.2%), meditation/yoga (62.0%), and herbal (59.7%) traditional and complementary therapies the most, and most of them used these methods to reduce nausea, vomiting, edema, and fatigue during pregnancy. The mean Attitudes towards Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire score of the participants was 35.0 (5.04). It was seen that having high school or higher education (p < 0.05), having an income more than expenses (p < 0.001), having received advice from nurses when having a complaint (p < 0.001), having knowledge about traditional and complementary therapies (p < 0.001), and being a practitioner who received services of traditional and complementary therapies (p < 0.001) were positively associated with the utilization of traditional and complementary therapies. Conclusion: In this study, it was determined that the attitudes of pregnant women towards holistic complementary and alternative medicine were high. Their personal characteristics, as well as their knowledge and practice of holistic complementary and alternative medicine affected their attitudes towards holistic complementary and alternative medicine. Obstetrics nurses/midwives should actively participate in training programs on traditional and complementary therapies focused on pregnant women.
