Effects of graviola oil extract on fattening performance and circadian rhythms of adipokine, cardiac and mitochondrial function markers in lambs

    Kotan, Gökşad Cemil; Bayraktar, Bülent

Background: This study investigated the effects of dietary graviola (Annona muricata L.) oil extract (GOE) (supplemented at 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg) on the growth performance and circadian rhythm profiles of adipokine, cardiac, and mitochondrial function biomarkers in 48 male Anatolian Merino lambs (2.5 months old). Methods: Lambs were assigned to a control group (G0) or supplementation groups (G200, G400, G600 mg/kg) for a 60-day trial (70 days total). The study was conducted under a 12-h light/12-h dark cycle to ensure controlled environmental conditions. To analyze circadian profiles, blood samples were collected on days 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 at four time points (07:00, 13:00, 19:00, and 01:00). Serum levels of Apelin, cTnI, BMAL1, MOTS-c, and BMCP1 were measured by ELISA. Data were analyzed using GLM Multivariate analysis (p < 0.05). Results: Key findings showed the G400 dose resulted in the most effective linear increase in live weight and live weight gain by day 60, and had a significant overall effect on live weight (p < 0.05). The G200 dose significantly improved the feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05), while feed consumption was unaffected (p > 0.05). Regarding biomarkers on day 60, the G400 dose effectively modulated BMAL1, MOTS-c, and BMCP1 (peak at 19:00). The G600 dose yielded the best results for Apelin (peak at 19:00) and cTnI (peaks at 13:00 and 07:00). Conclusions: In conclusion, GOE at a dose of 400 mg/kg (G400) not only optimizes fattening performance in Anatolian Merino lambs but also supports metabolic homeostasis by modulating adipokine levels, cardiac function, and mitochondrial biogenesis processes in a manner consistent with the circadian rhythm. These findings demonstrate that the G400 dose is a safe and effective phytogenic strategy for improving animal health and production efficiency.

Relationships between problematic social media use and social comparison: a meta-analysis

Demir, Mustafa; Yayla, İbrahim Erdoğan; Kaya, Metin; Koçak, Lokman; Arpaci, Ibrahim; Baloglu, Mustafa

We examined the relationship between problematic social media use (PSMU) and social comparison via a meta-analysis. We conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis. The study includes quantitative data from 20 independent studies published between January 2019 and October 2025 that examined the relationship between PSMU and social comparison. The studies encompassed adolescents, university students, and the general adult population from both individualistic and collectivist cultural contexts. Effect sizes were calculated using Fisher’s z-transformation under a random-effects model. The results indicated a modest positive relationship between PSMU and social comparison, with an effect size (ES) of 0.24 (95% CI [0.13, 0.36]). Following the Trim-and-Fill adjustment, the effect size decreased slightly, but the overall pattern was preserved. Additional meta-analyses based on standardized regression coefficients showed that, when control variables were included, the association weakened but remained detectable (ES = 0.169, 95% CI [0.029, 0.309]). Effect sizes in unpublished studies were close to zero; however, this finding should be interpreted with caution, as it is based on a limited number of unpublished studies. A high degree of heterogeneity was observed across the analyses. Moderation and meta-regression analyses indicated that the relationship may vary depending on the type of social comparison scale, age, gender composition, and countries’ Global Innovation Index scores. Studies using theory-based measures of social comparison reported higher effect sizes. Higher effect estimates were observed in samples comprising older participants, in groups with a greater proportion of men, and in countries with lower levels of national innovation. In contrast, effect estimates in adolescent samples were relatively small and, in some subgroup analyses, remained trivial despite reaching statistical significance. In conclusion, social comparison shows a limited, context-sensitive relationship in magnitude rather than a strong or universal one with PSMU. However, it is unclear whether the observed relationship reflects a genuine connection between the independent constructs or partial conceptual overlap between the measurement instruments. The findings suggest that, although some sub-group effects may be statistically significant, their practical importance may remain limited. Therefore, the relationship between PSMU and social comparison should be evaluated within a multi-layered theoretical framework that accounts for measurement approaches, socio-technical contexts, and potential conceptual overlaps between constructs.

Development and psychometric evaluation of the Self-Regulated Nursing Care Scale (SRNCS) among Turkish nurses

Akeren, Zahide; Akeren, İhsan; Isik, Hafsa Kubra

Background: Self-regulation refers to individuals’ ability to control themselves, manage their behaviours and learn from their environment. Self-regulated learning skills may support nurses in providing effective care. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate the Self-Regulated Nursing Care Scale (SRNCS) for assessing nurses’ self-regulated nursing care skills based on Zimmerman’s Self-Regulated Learning Model (Z’SLM) and the relevant literature. Methods: The planning, implementation and evaluation components of nursing care were considered in relation to the forethought, performance and self-reflection phases of Z’SLM. Data were collected online between November 2022 and January 2023 from nurses working in state hospitals. Content validity was assessed through expert review. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed using data from 201 and 239 nurses, respectively. Criterion validity and reliability were also examined. Results: EFA yielded a 16-item, three-dimensional structure comprising planning, implementation, and evaluation and explaining 63.9% of the total variance. CFA supported this three-factor structure in an independent sample. Criterion validity was supported by correlations with the Counselling Skills in Nurses Scale. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.95 for the overall scale and 0.81, 0.87, and 0.93 for the planning, implementation, and evaluation dimensions, respectively. The test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.77. Conclusion: The findings support the validity and reliability of the Turkish form of the SRNCS for assessing self-regulated care skills among nurses providing inpatient care. The scale may be used in research and clinical settings to assess planning, implementation and evaluation dimensions of self-regulated nursing care. Future studies may examine relationships between SRNCS scores and care-related outcomes.

Associations between technology use, perceived burdensomeness, and independence among rural older adults

    Bal, Betül; Apaydin, Emine

Objective: This study aims to examine the relationships among perceived burdensomeness, technology use habits, and activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults residing in rural areas. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted with 384 older adults living in rural areas in two different regions of Turkey. Data were collected using an Information Form, the Geriatric Perceived Burdensomeness Scale, the Barthel Index for Activities of Daily Living, and the Technology Use Habits Scale. Results: Perceived burdensomeness was moderately and negatively correlated with ADL (r = − 0.484, p < 0.001), whereas technology use habits were weakly but positively correlated with BADL (r = 0.192, p < 0.001). In the hierarchical regression analysis, technology use habits showed a positive and statistically significant association with ADL in the initial model (β = 0.189, p < 0.001). When perceived burdensomeness was added to the model, it emerged as a strong negative predictor of ADL (β = −0.497, p < 0.001), substantially increasing the explained variance. In the fully adjusted model, perceived burdensomeness, age, digital device use, and duration of digital device use were significantly associated with ADL, whereas age did not significantly affect the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and ADL. Overall, perceived burdensomeness and technology use habits were identified as key factors related to functional independence among rural older adults. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that perceived burdensomeness and technology use habits are closely associated with independence in activities of daily living among older adults living in rural areas. These findings indicate an association between technology use and perceived burdensomeness and provide a foundation for future research in nursing practice and rural health services. Future research is recommended to focus on evaluating technology-based and psychosocial interventions that support independence and psychosocial well-being in rural older populations. Clinical trial number: Not applicable.

Psychological well-being, body image and self-esteem in elite and amateur female taekwondo athletes in Türkiye

Gönen, Mevlüt; Türkmen, Mutlu; Çakır, Zekai; Arı, Fatih; Çatıkkaş, Fatih

Background: Female athletes competing in weight-category sports may experience unique psychological pressures related to body image, performance expectations, and sociocultural gender norms. While elite sport participation is often assumed to enhance psychological functioning, evidence remains mixed. This study examined differences in psychological well-being, body image, self-esteem, and athletic identity between elite and amateur female taekwondo athletes in Türkiye, a cultural context characterised by distinct gender and body norms, and explored their associations with psychological well-being. Türkiye represents a theoretically relevant context in which institutional weight regulation intersects with sociocultural gender norms, creating a setting in which body-related psychological experiences may be uniquely shaped by both sport structures and cultural expectations. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed with 233 female taekwondo athletes (107 elite, 126 amateur; M_age = 22.0 ± 3.2 years). Participants completed validated Turkish versions of the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS), the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS). Independent samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlations, and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted. Results: No significant differences were found between elite and amateur athletes in psychological well-being or self-esteem. Elite athletes demonstrated significantly stronger athletic identity (p <.001), whereas amateur athletes reported significantly, though modestly, higher body image scores (p =.046). In regression analyses, self-esteem (β = 0.428, p <.001) and body image (β = 0.354, p <.001) were significant predictors of psychological well-being, jointly explaining 52.6% of the variance (R² = 0.526), with self-esteem showing the strongest independent association. Effect size estimates indicated that differences were large for athletic identity (d = 0.75), small for body image (d = 0.26), and negligible for psychological well-being and self-esteem (d = 0.09 and d = 0.13, respectively). Conclusions: Psychological well-being in female taekwondo athletes was more strongly associated with self-esteem and body image than with competitive level. These findings support prioritising self-esteem and body appreciation in structured psychological support programs for female athletes in weight-category sport systems.

How accurately do large Language models interpret sport safeguarding principles: an evaluation using the International Olympic Committee framework

Gökmen, Mehmet Yiğit; Belibağlı, Mehmet Cenk; Karıncaoğlu, Ergin; Nazlıcan, Mahmut Çağatay; Türkmen, Eren; Yönal, Mehmet; Uluöz, Eren

Background: Safeguarding in sport, defined as the prevention of abuse, harassment, and exploitation, has become a core ethical responsibility for sport organizations. With the growing influence of artificial intelligence, large language models are increasingly being used to interpret, summarize, and operationalize policy documents. However, their reasoning fidelity in value-laden contexts such as athlete protection remains uncertain. Methods: This document-based comparative study evaluated two advanced large language models, ChatGPT (OpenAI) and NotebookLM (Google), against twenty-five decision points derived from the 2024 International Olympic Committee Consensus on Interpersonal Violence and Safeguarding in Sport. Responses were independently scored by two evaluators across four dimensions: accuracy, ethical reasoning, applicability, and responsibility awareness. Quantitative and qualitative analyses assessed concordance with IOC recommendations, inter-rater reliability, and reasoning patterns. Structured PICO-style prompts were used to ensure standardized and comparable model interrogation across all decision points. Results: ChatGPT achieved a higher mean composite score (3.84 ± 0.41) than NotebookLM (3.32 ± 0.77) (Wilcoxon Z = 3.41, p = 0.001, r = 0.68; n = 25 paired decision points), with full concordance in 21/25 (84.0%) versus 14/25 (56.0%) decision points. Inter-rater agreement was excellent (Cohen’s kappa = 0.89). ChatGPT demonstrated stronger procedural reasoning and clearer alignment with IOC-defined responsibilities, while NotebookLM emphasized empathy and cultural nuance. Both models underperformed in survivor-centred reasoning and outcome evaluation metrics. Conclusion: LLMs can partially reproduce the ethical and procedural logic embedded in sport safeguarding frameworks, but their reasoning remains incomplete without human oversight. Their integration into governance, education, and policy translation should follow clear ethical guardrails to prevent misinterpretation or amplification of harm. These systems may support policy drafting, education, and communication, yet they should function strictly as augmentative tools rather than independent decision-makers. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically benchmark LLM reasoning against an official international safeguarding framework in sport. Future research should evaluate interactive and multilingual applications to enhance contextual accuracy and equitable safeguarding outcomes.

The role of the 2023 earthquakes in the competencies and critical thinking skills of teacher candidates in Türkiye

Görgülü, Deniz; Cömert, Melike; Demir, Mustafa; Şahin, Çiğdem

Background: The impact of natural disasters on the professional development of teacher candidates has, to date, primarily been investigated in relation to psychological well-being and trauma. Nevertheless, the association between these extreme events and teacher candidates’ personal and professional competencies, as well as their critical thinking skills, remains insufficiently addressed in the literature. In particular, for teacher candidates who directly experienced the 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye, there exists a distinct need for comprehensive research that integrates both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Methods: This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. In the quantitative phase, the Personal-Professional Competencies Perception Scale (PPCPS) and the Critical Thinking Standards Scale (CTSS) were administered to 304 teacher candidates at İnönü University who directly experienced the 2023 earthquakes. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 37 purposively selected participants to contextualize and deepen the quantitative findings. Results: A positive, significant, and strong correlation was found between critical thinking skills and personal and professional competency (r =.657, p <.01). Qualitative findings revealed that in the post-earthquake period, teacher candidates developed positive perceptions of critical thinking, particularly under the themes of developing different perspectives, empathy, and increased awareness; however, the inefficiency of distance education, communication problems, and psychological difficulties negatively affected their perceptions of professional competence. Conclusion: Research findings indicate that the earthquakes had a bidirectional impact on teacher candidates' perceptions of competence and critical thinking. Among these İnönü University teacher candidates, traumatic experiences appeared to enhance cognitive and critical awareness consistent with Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) theory, while simultaneously weakening teacher candidates’ perceptions of professional competence, owing to distance learning disruptions and psychological challenges. These findings highlight that post-disaster teacher education processes should focus not only on academic sustainability but also on structural arrangements that support critical thinking, psychological resilience, and professional competencies.

Secondary school students’ reading culture and ıts role in critical reading self-efficacy perceptions

Maden, Aslı; Maden, Sedat; Önal, Aydın

Background: This study examines the relationship between secondary school students' reading culture and their critical reading self-efficacy (CRSE), addressing a gap in the literature on affective factors associated with critical literacy. Understanding this relationship is crucial for promoting sustainable reading practices and fostering critical engagement among adolescents. Methods: A correlational survey design was employed with 214 secondary school students (ages 11–14) from public schools in Türkiye. Data were collected using the Critical Reading Self-Efficacy Scale (19 items, four subdimensions) and the Reading Culture Scale (30 items, multidimensional). Reliability coefficients were satisfactory (α =.80 and α =.89, respectively). After confirming normality assumptions, Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between variables. Results: Students' mean CRSE scores were above average, while their reading culture levels were moderate. CRSE did not differ significantly by grade level or gender, whereas reading culture levels were higher among Grade 8 students compared to Grade 7. A strong positive correlation was found between CRSE and reading culture (r ≈.63, p <.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that reading culture was significantly associated with CRSE, accounting for 39% of the variance. Among the subdimensions, personal development and reading relations and basic reading skills were significantly associated with CRSE, whereas visual reading and book selection were not (p >.05). Conclusions: The findings demonstrate a significant relationship between students' reading culture and their CRSE. These results suggest that students with higher levels of reading culture tend to report higher levels of critical reading self-efficacy. Educational programs may benefit from considering activities related to the difficulty and research dimensions of CRSE. Future studies are recommended to examine these relationships across diverse populations using longitudinal or experimental designs.

Modulation of stress and neuroplasticity biomarkers via rhythmic vocalization: a controlled study on NDNF, cortisol, and monoamines

    Okur, Süheyb; Bayraktar, Bülent

Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of reciting the Quran (from Mushaf) on serotonin, dopamine, NDNF, and cortisol levels in relation to mental well-being. Methods: This study was conducted on a sample of university students who know how to read the Quran in Türkiye, selected by a non-probability method, with a pre-test-post-test control group and a longitudinal design; the assignment to the groups was also done randomly. The research was carried out with 72 university students (36 female, 36 male), aged 19–30, who know how to read the Quran and do not have any health problems. Two groups were formed: a 36-person experimental group and a 36-person passive resting control group. The Mental Well-Being Scale and a personal information form were used to evaluate the participants’ well-being status. Salivary serotonin, dopamine, NDNF, and cortisol levels were examined using the ELISA technique in samples taken before and after the experimental group recited verses 195–200 of Surah Al-i Imran aloud. Number, percentage, mean, Pearson correlation, and ANOVA tests were used to evaluate the data. Statistical significance was accepted as p <.05 for all analyses. Results: A significant group-time interaction was found (p <.05). Compared to the passive resting control group, the experimental group showed statistically significant increases in salivary serotonin, dopamine, and NDNF levels, and a significant decrease in cortisol levels. However, a critical dissociation was observed: despite this neuroprotective biomarker profile, the control group reported statistically significantly higher post-intervention mental well-being scores than the experimental group (p <.05). This suggests that the acute cognitive load and performance anxiety associated with the recitation task may temporarily mask physiological benefits in self-reports. Conclusions: A brief (5-minute) ‘Tartil’ recitation of the Quran demonstrates immediate, positive neurobiological effects by reducing stress hormones (cortisol) and increasing reward- and neuroplasticity-related biomarkers (dopamine, serotonin, NDNF). However, this did not immediately translate to higher self-reported well-being, suggesting the relationship between the neurobiology of recitation and its perceived psychological effects is complex and potentially confounded by factors such as performance anxiety or cognitive load in an experimental setting. Clinical trial number: Not applicable.

Depression and psychiatric help-seeking as joint outcomes: a Bayesian multilevel analysis of household-level dependence

Camadan, Fatih; Yıldız, Mehmet Selim; Şahin, Hatice Büşra; Urak, Faruk; Börekçi, Taha Berkay; Bilgiç, Abdulbaki

Background: Depression and the utilization of psychiatric services (PSU) are complex mental health outcomes shaped by a wide range of individual, familial, and socioeconomic factors. However, within the context of Türkiye, limited attention has been devoted to the simultaneous modeling of these outcomes and to the systematic examination of their shared household-level determinants. Methods: This study conducts a concurrent analysis of two binary outcomes—self-reported depression and receipt of professional psychiatric care within the past 12 months—using data from a nationally representative household survey. The analytical sample comprises 22,742 individuals nested within 10,028 households across Türkiye. A Bayesian multilevel bivariate logistic regression model was employed to account explicitly for the hierarchical structure of the data, with individuals nested within households. Household-level random intercepts were specified for both outcomes, and the correlation between the latent processes underlying depression and PSU was directly estimated. Weakly informative priors were adopted, and model estimation was performed using the No-U-Turn Sampler (NUTS), an efficient variant of the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm. Results: The results reveal pronounced clustering of both depression and PSU at the household level. A strong positive correlation between household-level random effects indicates that individuals experiencing depression are substantially more likely to utilize psychiatric services within the same family context. At the individual level, men are significantly less likely than women to report depressive symptoms or to seek psychiatric care. Tobacco and alcohol use are positively associated with depression risk, whereas adequate rest and healthier lifestyle behaviors exhibit protective effects. Increases in body mass index (BMI) are associated with a higher likelihood of depression. In contrast, active employment and higher household income are linked to reduced depression risk. Additionally, a range of sociodemographic and economic characteristics exert significant effects on both depression and PSU. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that depression and psychiatric service utilization (PSU) are shaped not only by individual-level characteristics but also by shared familial and structural factors. The results underscore the need for mental health policies that move beyond narrowly individual-centered frameworks and instead adopt holistic strategies that incorporate household dynamics and broader socioeconomic conditions.

Trust in AI: scale development and validation for online distance learners

Üstün, Ayşin Gaye; Yavuz, Mehmet; Kayalı, Bünyami; Uçar, Hasan; Erdoğdu, Erdem; Bozkurt, Aras

Trust in artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a critical factor influencing students’ interactions with AI-supported learning environments. However, validated instruments for measuring student trust in AI within educational contexts remain limited. This study developed and validated a multidimensional scale to assess student trust in AI systems in online distance education. Scale development followed a sequential multi-stage design, including item generation based on literature review, expert evaluation for content validity, and psychometric validation through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. A total of 837 distance learning students participated in the study (EFA = 412; CFA = 307; validation sample = 118). Exploratory factor analysis supported a five-factor structure explaining 63.20% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis with an independent sample indicated good model fit (/df = 2.17; CFI =.95; TLI =.94; RMSEA =.06). The scale demonstrated high internal consistency (=.94; =.94). Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis supported metric invariance across gender, indicating comparable measurement across groups. No significant gender differences were observed, and trust in AI was not significantly associated with grade point average or system engagement frequency. These results suggest that trust represents a distinct perception that may influence how students engage with AI-supported learning environments. The resulting 21-item scale provides a reliable instrument for investigating student trust in AI and offers practical implications for the design and implementation of AI-supported learning in higher education.

The effects of music with different rhythms on various sports parameters: an investigation on traditional Turkish archery athletes

    Şahan, Kübra; Boz, Emre

Background: This study seeks to contribute uniquely to the underexplored field of traditional Turkish archery by objectively examining the effects of music on physiological and technical parameters, including heart rate, shooting duration, shooting frequency, shooting performance, and draw biomechanics. Methods: In this context, the study investigated the effects of rhythmic diversity on parameters such as heart rate, shooting frequency, shooting duration, shooting accuracy, and draw biomechanics. The participants of the study were 14 students studying at Bayburt University and interested in traditional Turkish archery. The athletes were assigned shooting tasks initially without music and then with music at different BPM ranges (Downbeat, Medium, and Upbeat). Various biometric and athletic data were recorded before and after the music. During the practice, the effects of downbeat, medium, and upbeat tempo music on different physiological reactions and performance variables were analyzed. A Polar watch, a digital stopwatch, and a high-resolution camera were used during the shooting sessions. Kinovea software was used to measure draw biomechanics. Results: The study results revealed significant differences in heart rate between shots performed with music at different rhythms, with higher average values found with higher tempo music (p < 0.05; F = 13.842). Regarding shot duration (p < 0.05; F = 9.212) and shooting frequency (p < 0.05; F = 8.763), shots performed without music took longer, while shots performed with moderate tempo music were found to be the most efficient. Participants scored significantly higher for shots performed with both no music (42.09) and medium rhythm music (44.71) than for shots performed with downbeat and upbeat tempo music (p < 0.05; F = 9.826). However, no differences were found in the draw biomechanics that shape technical performance during shooting based on music type (p > 0.05; F = 0.968). Conclusions: The findings indicate that while higher musical tempos elevate athletes’ heart rates and reduce shooting duration and frequency, shooting performance is superior at moderate tempos compared to downbeat or upbeat tempos.

An examination of performance enhancement attitudes and belief levels regarding sports supplements among students receiving education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices

Karakaya, Umut Can; Ceyhan, Mehmet Ali

Background: This study examines the changes in performance enhancement attitudes and sports supplement belief levels among sports sciences faculty students after education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices. In the highly competitive environment of modern sports, nutrition and ergogenic aids are crucial in enhancing athletic performance and preventing injuries. However, research in this area is limited, and existing literature emphasizes the need to explore the relationship between education and these topics. Methods: The study employed an experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test method. The research group comprised 61 students (24 female and 37 male) from the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Bayburt University. Data collection tools included the “Personal Information Form,” the “Performance Enhancement Attitude Scale (PEAS),” and the “Sports Supplement Belief Scale (SSBS).” Data were collected via Google Forms and analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. The skewness and kurtosis values were calculated to assess the data distribution, and parametric tests, including t-tests and ANOVA, were applied. Results: The findings revealed that education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices significantly improved students’ performance-enhancement attitudes. For example, PEAS scores increased from a pre-test mean of 38.74 to a post-test mean of 44.13 (p < 0.05), representing a change of approximately 13.91%. However, no significant changes were observed in SSBS scores. This suggests that students’ beliefs regarding sports supplements may be shaped by prior knowledge and experiences, making them less influenced by the educational intervention. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices can positively influence students’ performance-enhancement attitudes. However, more in-depth educational programs may be required to impact beliefs about sports supplements. These findings can guide the development of more effective educational programs to enhance athletic performance and safeguard athlete health. By providing evidence-based insights, this study significantly contributes to the existing literature and supports the development of policies and educational initiatives in anti-doping and athlete education.

Kırbaş, Zila Özlem; Bayraktar, Bülent; Odabaşi Aktaş, Elif

Background: Hormones are molecules that contribute significantly to mental and physical health due to their role in emotion regulation (ER) processes. However, the role and effect of hormones on the ER has not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, it was aimed to examine the salivary Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cortisol hormone response to support ERS in primary school students depending on some parameters. Method: This cross-sectional and correlational study was conducted in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye between April 2023 and June 2023. In the sample selection, after the number of students was determined in proportional stratification, the sample selection method was made by simple random selection from each class list, first according to the school and then the grade level of each school. A total of 177 healthy students between the ages of 8 and 10 who attended these schools, were allowed to participate in the research by their families, and were volunteers, were included in the study. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form and the Emotion Regulation Scale for Children and saliva collection cups. Human-specific Brain-derived neurotrophic factor ELISA Kit (BT LAB, Cat.No E1302Hu, CHINA) for measuring BDNF levels in saliva; In measuring the level of cortisol hormone in saliva, Human Cortisol ELISA Kit (BT LAB, Cat.No E 1 003Hu, CHINA) was used in accordance with the procedure specified in the manufacturer’s catalogue. Data were evaluated using the SPSS 26.0 for Windows (SPSS, Chicago, Il, USA) package program. Independent Samples Test and One-Way ANOVA test, correlation and Multiple Linear Regression analysis were used to evaluate the data. P <.01 and p <.05 significance levels were used as statistical significance values. Results: A statistically significant correlation was found between the mean total score of the Emotion Regulation Skills Scale for Children and the mean level of salivary BDNF, and a negative correlation between the mean level of salivary cortisol (p˂0.01). Conclusions: Within the scope of the data obtained in our current study, BDNF levels were found to be high and cortisol hormone levels to be low in children with high ERS.

Semerci Çakmak, Vahide; Sönmez Sari, Ebru; Çetinkaya Özdemir, Serap

Background: Adults with diabetes encounter various challenges related to managing their condition. In this study, we explored the experiences of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus with low socioeconomic status in Türkiye. Methods: This study was conducted as a phenomenological qualitative research. The purposive sampling method was used to select adults with type 2 diabetes. Data saturation was achieved with 20 patients. The data were collected through a demographic information form and a semi-structured questionnaire. The participants were interviewed by phone. The interviews were conducted in a quiet environment where the participants could respond comfortably. During the data analysis process, the content analysis approach suggested by Graneheim and Lundman (2004) was used. This method involves identifying meaningful units within the text, coding these units, and developing sub-themes and main themes. The MAXQDA 20 software was used for data management. Results: The participants were between 41 and 71 years old. Four main themes and ten subthemes were identified in the analysis. Themes: The identified themes included difficulties with dietary management of diabetes, individual difficulties, difficulties with self-management in diabetes, and coping strategies. According to Theme 1, it was observed that the participants experienced difficulties in managing nutrition in diabetes due to the economic aspect of diet and the inability to adapt to the diet. According to Theme 2, it was observed that the participants faced physical, psychological, and social difficulties. According to Theme 3, it was observed that the participants faced difficulties related to diabetes self-management, including blood glucose monitoring, insulin injection administration, and maintaining glycemic control.” According to Theme 4, it was observed that the participants attempted to cope with diabetes-related difficulties through healthy lifestyle habits and family support. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that adults with type 2 diabetes in low socioeconomic status face challenges related to biopsychosocial factors, nutrition, and diabetes self-management. However, these individuals managed their difficulties by adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors and relying on family support. The challenges faced by adults with diabetes may be alleviated through awareness training on dietary management and glycemic control.

Imagery and motivation in performance sports: a psychological study on weightlifters

Aksoy, Ebu Bekir Sıddık; Ceyhan, Mehmet Ali

Background: This study investigates the relationship between imagery use and motivation among weightlifters, focusing on how demographic factors like gender, education level, and national status influence these aspects. Imagery, a mental strategy used to achieve goals and motivation, an intrinsic driving force, is explored within weightlifting. Despite research linking mental strategies to performance, studies targeting weightlifters still need to be expanded. This study examines how imagery impacts this group’s motivation levels and technical performance. Methods: The study included 347 licensed athletes participating in the 2022 Turkish Individual Junior and U-23 Weightlifting Championship in Van. Data were collected online using the “Personal Information Form,” the “Sport Imagery Questionnaire,” and the “Sport Motivation Scale.” Analyses were conducted with SPSS, assessing normality through skewness and kurtosis. Parametric tests, such as t-tests and one-way ANOVA, were applied for group comparisons. At the same time, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient was used to explore relationships between continuous variables, including age, years of experience, and competition weight category. Results: A significant positive correlation was found between imagery use and motivation, particularly in the Cognitive Imagery (CI), Motivational Specific Imagery (MSI), and Motivational General-Mastery (MGM) subdimensions. Education level significantly influenced imagery use and motivation, with higher levels linked to better mental training and increased motivation. Although gender did not significantly affect these factors, female athletes displayed more robust emotional responses, enhancing their ability to use positive emotions effectively. Age and sports experience were also positively associated with effective imagery use, indicating that experienced athletes leverage mental strategies more proficiently. Conclusions: The findings emphasize imagery as a vital tool for enhancing motivation and performance in weightlifters. Athletes with higher education levels and more experience benefit more from mental training. Future research should broaden its scope to include diverse sports and age groups, while longitudinal studies can provide deeper insights into the evolution of imagery and motivation over time.

Metabolic syndrome index measurement tool (MSI): scale development, reliability and validity study

    Akeren, Zahide; Apaydın, Emine

Aim: Identifying the risks of metabolic syndrome (MetS) can lead to early targeted interventions and thus contribute to improved quality of life by reducing the risk of developing MetS, diabetes or heart disease in the future. We aimed to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to measure the MetS risk of the population. Materials and methods: In the methodological study, an item pool was created by reviewing the literature. Pre-application was performed after the weighting of the items whose content validity was ensured by taking expert opinions. Data were collected from 43 patients with MetS from a state hospital affiliated to the Ministry of Health and 405 individuals without MetS from the community, from a total of 448 individuals using the Individual Information Form, Finnish Diabetes Risk Scale (FINDRISC) and Metabolic Syndrome Index (MSI). The data obtained were evaluated using SPSS 22.0 and MedCalc 19.1 statistical programmes. Scale discrimination was analyzed by independent samples t-test between the upper and lower 27% groups. The cut-off point of the scale score in predicting the diagnosis of MetS was tested by ROC analysis. Correlation analysis was performed with the parallel form for criterion validity. Results: As a result of the ROC analysis, a perfectly compatible scale with a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 85.43% and a cut-off score of 48 was obtained. When the correlation analyses between MSI and FINDRISC scores were examined for criterion validity, a positive moderate (r = 0.632, p < 0.001) correlation was found between FINDRISC and MSI. When the discrimination of the scale was analysed, it was found that there was a significant difference between the lower 27% and upper 27% groups (p < 0.05) and it was revealed that the MSI made sensitive measurements to discriminate. Conclusions: The MSI scale is a valid and reliable tool for early detection of MetS risk.
