- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ1Modal identification and fatigue behavior of Eynel steel arch highway bridge with calibrated models
Sunca, Fezayil; Ergün, Mustafa; Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Günaydin, Murat; Okur, Fatih Yesevi
In this paper, modal parameters of the Eynel steel arch highway bridge are identified and the fatigue behavior of the bridge is investigated. Modal parameters were extracted from three ambient vibration tests carried out over the period since the bridge came into service. The bridge became operational in 2009, and experimental measurements were taken in 2010, 2019, and 2021. The Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) method in the frequency domain and the Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI) method in the time domain were used. Modal parameters were compared and any differences found over time in the measurement test results were investigated. Comparison of the results shows that changes in the natural frequencies were very limited and there was no change between the mode shapes. When experimental natural frequencies were compared, the maximum difference between the first and second measurements was calculated as 2.827%. Similarly, the maximum difference between the first and third measurements was 5.587% for the second mode, and around 3% for the other modes. This result is as expected because: (i) the bridge is not subject to heavy vehicle traffic and only connects village roads; (ii) no significant earthquake occurred during this period in the region which might have caused structural damage; (iii) no corrosion was found in the structural system elements as there was no contact with the reservoir water; (iv) no settlement or sliding occurred in the ground and boundary conditions remained unchanged. Moreover, the fatigue behavior of the bridge was investigated using the stress life method and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. To rationalize the results against the fatigue effects, the verified finite element model was used. From the fatigue analyses, it was concluded that the fatigue life of the bridge was within safe limits.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ2Experimental investigation of radiation shielding performances of some important AISI-coded stainless steels: Part I
Alım, Bünyamin; Şakar, E.; Baltakesmez, Ali; Han, İbrahim; Sayyed, M.I.; Demir, Lütfü
The investigation of radiation shielding performances of AISI-302, 304, 321 and 430 stainless steels which have wide range of application because of their superior mechanical properties, temperature and corrosion resistances was aimed in this study. In accordance with this purpose, photon-shielding parameters of these stainless steels were calculated both experimentally and theoretically. These parameters calculated are linear attenuation coefficient, mass attenuation coefficient, mean free path, half-value layer, quarter-value layer, tenth-value layer, total atomic cross-section, total electronic cross-section, effective atomic number, effective electron number and effective conductivity. They were experimentally measured at twenty-three different energies in the range 22 keV and 1333 keV. The photon energies were obtained from seven different radioactive sources (22Na, 60Co, 241Am, 109Cd, 137Cs, 152Eu and 133Ba). The Si(Li) and NaI(Tl) detectors were separately used taking into account of energy-efficient regions to counting process at narrow-beam transmission geometry. In addition, all these parameters were computed at the 15 keV‒15 MeV wide energy range, theoretically. In order to make a satisfying assessment about radiation shielding capabilities of AISI 302, 304, 321 and 430 alloys, all calculations were also made for ordinary, steel-scrap and steel-magnetite concretes (Fe-based steel concretes) that are most commonly used as shielding material in many nuclear applications. According to the results obtained, it was observed that the radiation shielding performances of AISI 300 austenitic stainless steel series with containing Ni are superior to that of both AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel and examined concretes.

Çakiroǧlu, Ünal; Aksoy, Dilara Arzugül; Gencan, Ayşegül; Şen, Hasan
This study aims to determine the relationships between mental effort and the use of learner controls while working with instructional software. Various versions of instructional software including control components were developed to examine this relationship. Twenty-four secondary school students participated in the study and studied with instructional software including different controls in the content pages. All content pages consisted of the content area, image area, and control panel components. Five different page templates including different positions of these components were placed on the pages. Quantitative data were gathered from the cognitive load scale and the time spent on tasks was used for measuring the mental effort spent on the tasks in the software. The results indicated that students who used more controls spent more mental effort. Along with the study findings, the factors affecting the perceptions of cognitive load regarding the time spent on the controls were discussed. Implications were suggested for designers within the cognitive effects of learner control.

Akcay, Latif; Örs, Berna
In recent years, quantum computer development projects have progressed considerably in terms of quality and quantity. These studies also pose a serious risk for widely used security systems based on classical public-key cryptography algorithms. Therefore, development of hardware and software applications that use post-quantum methods are considered a necessity both for today and for the future. Kyber is one of the most promising key encapsulation mechanism in the final round of NIST post-quantum cryptography standardization process. In this study, we present a 64-bit application specific transport triggered architecture processor which has custom operations for accelerating the Kyber algorithm. Moreover, we compare the processor and its various versions with a 64-bit RISC-V core in terms of performance, total energy consumption and resource utilization. According to the test results, our custom processor provides at least 2x better performance and 1.5x lower energy consumption while increasing the required chip area approximately 1.4x.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ2Investigation of the solution for discontinuous contact problem between a functionally graded (FG) layer and homogeneous half-space
Öner, Erdal; Birinci, Ahmet
In this study, the discontinuous contact problem between a functionally graded (FG) layer, which is loaded symmetrically with point load P through a rigid block, and a homogeneous half-space was solved using the theory of elasticity and integral transform techniques. The shear modulus and density of the layer addressed in the problem vary with an exponential function along with its height. The half-space is homogeneous, and no binder exists on the contact surface containing the FG layer. In the solution, the body force of the FG layer was considered, whereas that of the homogeneous half-space was neglected. The Poisson’s ratios of both the FG layer and homogeneous half-space were assumed to remain constant. Additionally, all the surfaces addressed in the problem were assumed to be frictionless. Using the theory of elasticity and integral transform techniques, the discontinuous contact problem was reduced to two integral equations, wherein the contact stress under the rigid block and the slope of the separation, which occurred at the interface of the FG layer and homogeneous half-space, are unknown. These integral equations were solved numerically for the flat condition of the rigid block profile using the Gauss–Chebyshev integration formula. Consequently, the stress distributions, start–end points of the separation region, and separation displacements between the FG layer and homogeneous half-space were obtained for various dimensionless quantities.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ1Assessment of powder flow, functional and microbiological characteristics of ozone-treated skim milk powder
Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin
The influence of ozone treatment (OT) of skim milk powder (SMP) on functional, physicochemical characteristics, powder flow behaviours and microbiological quality was evaluated. SMP was ozone-treated for 0 (control), 30, 60, 90 or 120 min. Particle size parameters of samples were not affected by OT. OT increased dispersibility and foaming capacity, but decreased wettability time. The cohesion index of samples ranged from 11.98 to 18.34, with higher treatment times decreasing it. OT significantly decreased the tendency for caking and cohesion, as well as compaction characteristics, and increased the flow stability of ozone-treated samples compared with control. OT could be effective for improving SMP flow behaviours in terms of caking, cohesion, and compaction. OT for 120 min decreased the count of all analysed microorganisms to under the detection limit. Inactivation of microorganisms and improving functional and powder flow characteristics by OT may have applications in dairy powder processing and food safety.

Barlak, Melahat Semin; Degermenci, Nejdet; Cengiz, Ibrahim; Ucun Özel, Handan; Yildiz, Ergun
This study aimed to remove phenol with ozonation in a jet loop reactor (JLR) and a bubble column (BC). In the first stage of the study, the mass transfer properties of JLR were determined and superiority over BC reactors were shown, and in the second stage, these reactors were used in phenol removal studies. At the same conditions, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient of JLR was 0.540 min-1, while this value was determined as 0.246 min-1 in the BC reactor. In phenol removal, the effects of initial phenol concentration, ozone dosage and pH on phenol and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were determined for both JLR and BC. While the pseudo-first rate constant for phenol removal in JLR at 221 mg/min ozone dosage was 0.1756 min-1, this value was only calculated as 0.1157 min-1 in the BC reactor. As a result, it has been shown that JLRs can achieve higher ozone gas transfer with lower energy consumption and perform more effective phenol and COD removal than BC reactors, especially at low pH and high ozone dosages.

Acet, Tuba; Özcan, Kadriye; Sefalı, Abdurrahman
Psephellus appendicigerus, is a plant endemic to Turkey, belonging to the Asteraceae family, which is traditionally used in folk medicine in Turkey. The aim of this study is to reveal for the first time the biological activities of this plant and evaluate its potential use as a natural product. For this reason, different extracts (ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane) of the plant’s aerial parts were used in determining the antioxidant (2,20-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assays), antimicrobial (disc diffusion and microdilution methods), and enzyme inhibition activity (calorimetric methods) related to diabetes (α-amylase and α-glucosidase). Moreover, the phenolic constituents were analysed by high performance liquid chromatography. Methanol extract of the plant exhibited significant biological activity compared to other extracts. This extract had the highest amount of chlorogenic acid as phenolic compound. In addition, all extracts showed inhibition against at least one test microorganism. According to the results, P. appendicigerus has the potential to be used as a natural antioxidant, antimicrobial and enzyme inhibitor.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ3A dynamic segregation test method for heavyweight concrete: Density variation method
Süleyman Gökçe, H.; Andiç-Çakir, Ö.
Several segregation evaluation methods have been developed for concrete; however, none of them have been specially focused on heavyweight concrete, which has more of a tendency toward segregation because of differences in density of paste matrix to heavy aggregate. Thus, for heavyweight concrete, the segregation may be determined by measuring the difference density in a vertical direction. In this study, a simple reliable method, i.e., the density variation method, that considers the variation in vertical layers of the concrete is modeled to assess dynamic segregation of heavyweight concrete. In addition, 35 heavyweight concrete mixtures with high consistency were designed with various mixing parameters, and the results were compared with the model findings. The suggested test method was also compared with a conventional method (column segregation test by wet-sieving), and an equivalent segregation limit was determined. A strong linear relation (R2: 0.86) was found between the density variation method and column segregation test, and a segregation coefficient limit for segregation of heavyweight concrete is recommended as 1.7 %.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3Exergy analyses of two and three stage cryogenic cycles
Atasbak, Musa; Keven, Arzu; Karaali, Rabi
Cryogenics has an important influence on industry and science. In this study, optimum working conditions are obtained by applying exergy analysis and local optimization methods to two- and three-stage vapor compression cascade cryogenic cycle. The first and second laws of thermodynamics, exergy analysis, and local optimization methods are applied to the two- and three-stage cascade cryogenic cycle. By considering the needs and demands, it is possible to create new cycles by adding new devices and/or new stages to these cycles. The results of the optimum operating conditions are obtained for the two- and three-stage vapor compression cascade cryogenic cycle. It is seen that to achieve high COP values and high efficiency; it is necessary to reduce the compression ratio of the compressor as much as the fluid allows. For the two-stage cycle, the minimum total work required for cryogenic cooling is around P 7 = 2,400 kPa. The COP value is 0.30 between P 7 = 2,400 and 2,800 kPa, and the maximum exergy efficiency is obtained around 0.235. It is seen operating the first-stage compressor at high pressures increases the total losses of the entire cycle from 7,500 to 18,550 kW. The increase in total exergy losses is around 247%, and operating the first-stage compressor at high pressures increases the exergy efficiency of the entire cycle. The increase in total exergy efficiency is around 160%. When the second-stage compressor is operated at low pressure, the COP value increases by 2%, the exergy efficiency increases by 20%, and the exergy losses decrease by around 40%.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Performance of Jaya algorithm in optimum design of cold-formed steel frames
Artar, Musa
This paper presents a research on optimum design of cold-formed steel space frames using a new algorithm method named Jaya, which has been developed in recent years. The most obvious difference of Jaya algorithm from other algorithms is that it does not need any control parameters for updating. However, Jaya algorithm is able to successfully reach the optimum solutions without any delay. In this study, in order to test the robustness and practicality of this novel algorithm technique, different steel space frame problems that have been studied with other algorithms in literature are examined. The minimum weight designs of the problems are carried out by selecting suitable C-section from a prepared list including 85 C-sections with lips taken from American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI 2008). A program is coded in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000 OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface) in order to obtain optimum solutions. The strength constraints according to AISI-LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design), lateral displacement constraints, inter-story drift constraints and geometrical constraints are taken into account in the analyses. Two different cold-formed steel space frames are taken from literature to research optimum solutions by using Jaya algorithm. The first steel space frame is 379-member and the second steel space frame is 1211-member. The results obtained using Jaya algorithm are compared with those in reference studies. The results prove that Jaya algorithm technique is quite successful and practical optimum design of cold-formed steel space frames.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ3First green synthesis of (R)-2-methyl-1-phenylpropan-1-ol using whole-cell Lactobacillus paracasei BD101 biotransformation
Şahin, Engin
Green chemistry includes a novel process in the production of drugs precursors and biological active molecules using biocatalysts, so reducing the threats for human sanitary and ecological pollutions. Asymmetric bioreduction of prochiral ketones by biocatalysts is one of the best prevalent used methods in synthetic organic chemistry due to the production of enantiopure chiral carbinols. This study emphasizes the application biocatalyst L paracasei BD101 for enantioselective bioreduction of 2-methyl-1-phenylpropan-1-one ketone, which contain branched alkyl chain, to (R)-2-methyl-1-phenylpropan-1-ol ((R)-2) in high yields and excellent enantiomeric excess (>99%). The scale-up production was performed, and 4.61 g of (R)-2 in enantiopure form was synthesized. L paracasei BD101 was proved to be a substantial biocatalyst in asymmetric bioreduction of a ketone which contains a branched alkyl chain. There is not any work in the literature similar to our study. Hence, it is important to work on filling this gap. This study is the first example for an enantiopure synthesis of (R)-2 by a biocatalyst. The new green method was developed for bioreduction of bulky ketones, which contains a branched alkyl chain, and it approves the synthesis of novel chiral carbinols in an easy, cheap, and environmentally friendly condition using L paracasei BD101.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Investigation of Beam Width Shaping of a Ku-band Horn Antenna using a Diffractive Optic Element and an Electromagnetic Wave Absorber
Teber, Ahmet
The feasibility of beam-shaping of a Ku-Band horn as a transmitting (Tx) antenna by mounting two different versions of lenses which are kind of Fresnel Zone Plates (FZP) is studied. The designed and fabricated geometrical structures offer a simpler approach building Fresnel Zone Plates by using an electromagnetic wave absorber and diffractive optic material. The diffractive optic material, paraffin, forms a set of alternating open and opaque annular zones on a flat surface, based on the design principles of Fresnel Zone Plates. An electromagnetic wave absorber covers the top surface of the formed paraffin, but not including the grooves. Thereafter, the Fresnel Zone plates are suitably attached in front of the transmitter horn antenna, located in the far-field region of a receiving antenna. The half-power beam-widths for the horn antenna (unloaded) and with two types of lenses are investigated. The results indicate that Fresnel zone plate structures can play a role suppressing side lobes in H-plane so that the effective radiation is to be significantly concentrated.

Arslaner, Ayla; Salik, Mehmet Ali
This study investigated the effect of Malus floribunda fruit sauce (MFS) on the quality properties, minerals, volatiles, and viability of Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5® in probiotic ice creams. The MFS increased the dry matter, acidity, total sugar, invert sugar, and calories while decreasing fat, protein, ash, sucrose contents, viscosity, overrun, first dripping, complete melting time, and the pH of samples. The heavy metal contents were within safe limits. The MFS increased the perception of a fruity taste/aroma due to the increase in the terpenes and terpenoids, which reflected positively on the sensory scores. The highest taste and odor score (4.72) was seen in the MFIC sample. L. acidophilus La-5® counts (7.49 log cfu/g) and the survival rate (100.69%) of MFIC were significantly higher at the end of storage. Consequently, MFS may be used as a source of flavoring agents in ice cream and MFIC is a satisfactory vehicle for L. acidophilus La-5®. Novelty impact statement: There is no study in the scientific literature on the use of Malus floribunda fruit sauce (MFS) as a potential functional ingredient in probiotic ice cream production. MFS supplementation caused a significant change of volatile compounds in ice cream samples, which reflected positively on the sensory scores. MFS enhanced survival rates of Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5® in ice creams during the 60 days of storage.

In this study, removal of colour from wastewaters prepared synthetically using Bomaplex Blue CR-L was investigated using raw and activated pumpkin seed shells by adsorption in a batch system. The effects of stirring speed, adsorbent concentration, dye concentration, temperature and pH on colour removal were investigated, and adsorption capacities of raw and activated pumpkin seed shells were determined. In addition, adsorption kinetics, isotherm coefficients, activation energies and thermodynamic parameters were calculated. The optimal adsorption conditions were determined as pH = 2, stirring speed of 200 rpm, adsorbent concentration of 10 g L-1 and 30 °C. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum removal efficiency of Bomaplex Blue CR-L using raw pumpkin seed shells was 73.01 %. This value rose to 79.71 % after activation processing was applied. Experimental adsorption data show that the adsorption is more suited to the Langmuir adsorption model and works in accordance with the pseudo-first-order kinetics model. As a result of thermodynamic research, ΔH° and ΔS° were 31.515 kJ mol-1 and 109.952 kJ mol-1 K-1 for the raw adsorbent, respectively. For the activated adsorbent, ΔH° and ΔS° were 43.118 kJ mol-1 and 152.237 kJ mol-1 K-1, respectively. The activation energy of adsorption was calculated as 10.918 kJ mol-1 for the raw adsorbent and 9.882 kJ mol-1 for the activated adsorbent.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Thermodynamic feasibility analysis of a newly modified absorption power cycle running with LiBr-water
Tozlu, Alperen; Yosaf, Salem A.; Özcan, Hasan
This study thermodynamically evaluates a newly modified absorption power cycle (APC) working with Lithium Bromide–Water (LiBr-H2O) solution and compares it with the conventional Rankine, one-stage, and three-stage APC systems. An additional steam condenser is integrated to the conventional APC and part of pure water is extracted and pumped back to the high-pressure side without passing through the absorber of the cycle. In order to specify the best system parameters, parametric optimization of all configurations is evaluated. The Rankine cycle and the modified APC have better thermodynamic performances than those of the conventional and the three-stage APC at generator temperatures. The conventional APC is found to improve the cycle performance at low generator pressure. However, the efficiencies of this cycle start to decrease when generator pressure increases. In contrast, the Rankine cycle and the modified APC have larger working ranges of generator pressure.

Yaprakli, Sevda; Özden, Erdemalp
Economic complexity showing a holistic measure of countries' economic productive power and characteristics has become a new tool for understanding the dynamics of the economy. Examining the relationship between sustainable development and this new tool is vital in determining new policies. By applying panel data of OECD countries covering different development levels from 1996 to 2017 to a data-driven dynamic econometric model, the research provides fresh insight between sustainable development and economic complexity. The results indicate that economic complexity is significantly affected by sustainable developments’ economic indicators such as GDP, FDI, R&D expenditure, social indicators such as human development, income inequality, and environmental indicators such as production-based CO2 emissions, renewable energy consumption, and greenhouse gas. The research, consequently, suggests that switching to technology and knowledge-based production processes, expanding qualified production factor capacity, raising social living standards, and making investments in the green economy will foster economic complexity while ensuring stable sustainability.

Engin, M. Alptekin; Aras, Selim; Gangal, Ali
In this study, feature extraction methods used in the classification of single-channel lung sounds obtained by automatic identification of respiratory cycles were examined in detail in order to extract distinctive features at the lowest size. In this way, it will be possible to design a system for the detection of lung diseases, completely autonomously. In the study, automatic separation and classification of 400 respiratory cycles were performed from the single-channel common lung sounds obtained from 94 people. Leave one out cross validation (LOOCV) was used for the calibration and validation of the classification model. The Mel frequency cepstrum coefficients (MFCC), time domain features, frequency domain features, and linear predictive coding (LPC) were used for classification. The performance of the features was tested using linear discriminant analysis (LDA), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), support vector machines (SVM), and naive Bayes (NB) classification algorithms. The success of combinations of features was explored and enhanced using the sequential forward selection (SFS). As a result, the best accuracy (90.14% in the training set and 90.63% in the test set) was acquired using the k-NN for the triple combination, which included the standard deviation of LPC and the standard deviation and the mean of MFCC.
