- Kitap BölümüAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3Optimum Discrete Design of Steel Planar Trusses Comprising Earthquake Load Impact
Carbas, Serdar; Artar, Musa
In this study, the success of teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO) and biogeography-based optimization (BBO) metaheuristic methods in optimum discrete sizing design of a steel planar truss comprising earthquake load impact has been investigated. To do this, a 46-element steel planar truss has been handled as a design example. Like many other stochastic optimization methods, the TLBO and BBO techniques imitate specific natural events. In TLBO, the processes are carried out by mimicking a class consisting of teachers and students; on the other hand, the BBO simulates the distribution of species in nature based on biodiversity. The stress and displacement constraints in American Institute of Steel Construction-Allowable Stress Design (AISC-ASD) provisions are considered as structural behavior constraints. Both algorithms select design profiles from a discrete list containing steel W-shaped sections. For obtaining the minimum weighted optimum structural design, the algorithms encoded in MATLAB are supplied with open application programming interface (OAPI) functions that enable mutual data transfer with a structural analysis software (SAP2000) to practically get the structural responses under the effect of load combinations containing earthquake load. The optimal truss designs yielded with TLBO and BBO algorithms are compared with those already existed in the literature. Accordingly, it has been concluded that the TLBO and BBO algorithms give successful solutions.

Ürkek, Bayram; Şengül, Mustafa; Akgül, Halil İbrahim; Kotan, Tuba Erkaya
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of sloe berry (SB) addition at different ratios on the physical, chemical, antioxidant, colour and sensory properties and mineral contents of ice creams. The increment of SB led to the an increase of titratable acidity, overrun, viscosity and ash values, first dripping and complete melting times; in contrast, it decreased the total solid, pH and fat values. Mn and Zn values were affected significantly (P < 0.05) by the addition of SB but other element levels were not affected. L* and b* values decreased significantly in all samples as compared with control sample, while a*, H°, C* and ∆E* increased significantly with addition of SB. Antioxidant activity was the highest in the sample containing 15 % SB (w/w) among ice cream samples. The ice cream samples containing 15 % SB had higher score than the control sample in terms of colour and appearance, gumming structure and general acceptability.

Ermis, Ertan; Poyraz, Ecem; Dertli, Enes; Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin
Response surface methodology was used to determine the exopolysaccharide production of Lactobacillus brevis E25. The effects of three variables, temperature (30, 36 and 42 °C), incubation time (18, 33 and 48 h) and initial pH of growth medium (4.5, 5.5, and 6.5) were studied. Under optimum growth conditions, the amount of exopolysaccharide derived from Lactobacillus brevis E25 ranged from 10 to 35 gL-1. The size of EPS molecules ranged from 105 to 107 Da. Infra red spectrum analysis showed characteristics absorption peaks indicating the presence of-OH, C=O and C-H groups. Furthermore, only glucose was detected as monosaccharide in exopolysaccharide structure, revealing that the structure of exopolysaccharide is a homopolymeric glucan type. Based on the differential scanning calorimeter thermograms, exopolysaccharide’s melting temperature was observed around 116 °C.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ1Non-linear rheological (LAOS) behavior of sourdough-based dough
Yildirim-Mavis, Cigdem; Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin; Dertli, Enes; Arici, Muhammet; Ozmen, Duygu
During processing, wheat dough is known to undergo large deformation led by mixing and fermentation processes. This deformation is much more pronounced when sourdough is used in the recipe of wheat dough whose gluten is considerably hydrolyzed during sourdough fermentation. This causes deeper effects on rheological properties and shelf life of bakery products. Traditional small amplitude oscillatory tests do not enable us to comprehend the viscoelasticity under large deformations. In this respect, large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) tests are useful for accurate characterization of the non-linear mechanical response. This study, therefore, is undertaken to investigate the non-linear mechanical response of dough prepared with different amounts of sourdough (0, 10, 20 30 and 40%) in a strain values ranging from 0.005 to 200% (frequency at 10 rad/s). As a result, sourdough was determined to have considerable effects on the non-linear viscoelastic response of dough. Strain-stiffening and shear-thinning behaviors were considerably influenced by sourdough incorporation and the dough started to show strain-softening and lowered shear-thinning behavior after giving a peak around at 100% strain due to the onset of the breakdown of the gluten network and suspension of starch matrix as consequence of the metabolic activity of the starter culture (Lactobacillus brevis E25) used in the preparation of sourdough. The physicochemical (pH and TTA), microbiological properties (LAB count) and extensographic properties were also shown to support the LAOS results. LAOS tests could be effectively and clearly used to reveal the effect of processing conditions (sourdough content and deformation by large strain amplitude) on the non-linear mechanical response of wheat dough.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ4Production of enantiopure chiral aryl heteroaryl carbinols using whole‐cell Lactobacillus paracasei biotransformation
Şahin, Engin
Aryl and heteroaryl chiral carbinols are useful precursors in the synthesis of drugs. Lactobacillus paracasei BD87E6, which is obtained from a cereal based fermented beverage, was investigated as whole cell biocatalyst for the bioreduction of different ketones (including aromatic, hetero-aromatic and fused bicyclic ketone) into chiral carbinols, which can be used as a pharmaceutical intermediate. The study shows that bioreduction of aryl, heteroaryl and fused bicyclic ketone (1–5) to their corresponding chiral carbinols (1a–5a) in excellent enantioselectivity (>99%) with high yields. This study gave the first example for an enantiopure production of (S)-6-chlorochroman-4-ol (3a), which has many antioxidant activity, by a biological method. For asymmetric bioreduction of other prochiral ketones, these results open way to use of L. paracasei BD87E6 as biocatalysts. Also, the present process shows a hopeful and alternative green synthesis for the production of enantiopure carbinols in a mild, inexpensive and environmentally friendly process.

Kosunalp, Hatice Yalman; G¨ulsu, Mustafa
This paper studies the potential to ensure a numerical solution of nonlinear Riccati differential equations with an effective method, namely operational matrix which is derived by Hermite polynomials with the sense of Caputo derivative. In order to solve the Riccati dif- ferential equations, the complete problem is simplified with the oper- ational matrix obtained. To achieve this goal, the proposed approach converts the fractional differential equations (FDEs) into a set of alge- braic equations. We then construct a matrix with the algebraic equa- tions and extra equations extracted from initial conditions. Therefore, we achieve the solution by solving these algebraic equations given in a matrix sense. In order to show the efficiency of the proposed idea, we show a number of illustrative examples in which the results confirm the applicability of the suggested approach.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2020The Relationship of financial development and export; the case of Turkey: A literature review
Sayar, Ramazan
During the global financial crisis in 2008, the world trade experienced a large and severe collapse. Between 2008 and 2009, world exports and exports in Turkey decreased by 16% and 22%, respectively. The recent research has shown that the slowdown in global demand and tight financing conditions are the main factors behind this drop in exports. Auboin (2009) has stated that the 10%-15% decline in international trade after the global financial crisis may be due to the decline in commercial finance. In addition, the decline in commercial finance is particularly important for developing countries that have many sectors dependent on external financing. This study examines the reasons of the decline in exports in the world especially in Turkey during global financial crisis and assesses whether the financing constraints have contributed to this collapse. This study considered as a literature review consists of theoretical framework of the relationship between export and export financing. In order to show whether there is an effect of financing in international trade, firstly, research on the financial models is included in the classical models of international trade that show the dependence of international trading companies to financing. Secondly it has been utilized studies that analyzing of empirical evaluations of the effects of the external trade firms' dependence on external financing.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Physical, mechanical, and radiation attenuation properties of serpentine concrete containing boric acid
Zayed, A.M.; Masoud, M.A.; Shahien, M.G.; Gökçe, H.S.; Sakr, K.; Kansouh, W.A.; El-Khayatt, A.M.
Serpentine and boric acid are effective materials to produce the radiation-shielding concrete (RSC) for attenuating the fast and thermal neutrons, respectively. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of boric acid (0, 1, and 3% by cement weight) on the physical, mechanical, microstructural, and radiation shielding properties of serpentine concrete. The results showed that the addition of boric acid hindered the hydration of cement through the generation of amorphous borate material, which encapsulates the cement phases and retards their transformation into hydration products. Such a retardation process negatively influenced the mechanical properties of boric acid-bearing concrete and contributed to the thicker and less condensed interfacial transition zone. Furthermore, unlike total γ-rays, boric acid enhanced the attenuation properties of serpentine concrete against thermal and fast neutrons favoring the former. There was a satisfying agreement between the theoretical and measured values of fast neutron attenuation parameters. However, negligible variations in the theoretical values of photon interaction parameters showed that porosity was the principal reason for the reduction in gamma-ray attenuation as a result of boric acid addition.

Abdioglu, M.; Ozturk, K.; Guner, S.B.; Celik, S.; Kucukomeroglu, T.
The magnetic levitation force in vertical direction and guidance force in lateral direction should be increased for enhancing the loading capacity and stability of Maglev systems, respectively. In this study, we have produced multi‒seeded YBCO (YBa2Cu3O7) superconductors with two seeds and investigated the effect of seed distance on the vertical levitation force and lateral guidance force properties by using different permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) arrangements. Although there are studies in literature related to different distance, orientation and angle of seeds; there is no detailed study investigating the effect of seed distance on the vertical and lateral magnetic force properties of Maglev systems depending on different types of PMGs. In this study, after the sample fabrication, the optimum PMG arrangement were determined by using numerical simulation to obtain magnetic flux density distribution. It is determined that both maximum levitation and guidance force values firstly increased with increasing the seed distance from 0 to 4 mm and then related forces decreased with increasing the seed distance from 4 to 16 mm but still keep the higher force values than the sample with the seed distances of 0 mm. This situation is clarified as the increasing of the seed distance to an optimum value enhances both the levitation and guidance forces simultaneously and this is very important for levitation force applications because it causes to easy control of the Maglev system in vertical and lateral directions.

El Hassani, Kaoutar; Bayram, Ozkan; Anouar, Abdellah; Mavi, Ahmet
In this study, Zn(Al)O thin films were produced using colloidal solution of Zn(Al)O nanoparticles dispersed in polyethylene glycol (PEG). Zn(Al)O mixed metal oxides were obtained by a simple pyrolysis of Zn–Al containing layered double hydroxide materials with different Al content. Survey of textural analysis of Zn(Al)O mixed oxides displayed characteristic peaks of ZnO structure. The calculated ratios of lattice parameters c/a were found to be 1.61 and 1.60 for 3-ZAO and 5-ZAO, respectively. The optical transmittance of the prepared thin films was not significantly affected by the increase in Al content; however, this increase changed the optical band gap from 3.27 eV to 3.33 eV. ZAO thin films, which are both cost-effective with good optical properties, have the potential to be an alternative to those used in many optical devices lately.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ2Determination of acceptable quality limit for casting of a356 aluminium alloy: Supplier’s quality index (SQI)
Erzi, Eray; Gürsoy, Özen; Yüksel, Çağlar; Colak, Murat; Dispinar, Derya
Aluminium and its alloys have been widely used in the automotive industry for some time and A356 is one of the most popular aluminium alloys today in the sector. It contains approximately 7 wt.% Si and 0.3 wt.% Mg. Due to the defects that may be present in the cast parts, expected mechanical properties may not be reached and this alloy may perform in service under its potential. In a low pressure die casting, several precautions have to be taken in order to produce high quality and defect-free castings. Temperature of casting and the schemical composition of the melt is recorded continuously. Die temperature, pressure levels and their durations are optimized; degassing and fluxing operations are performed. Yet, regardless of the precautions, there could still be rejected parts. It is becoming clear that a good quality raw material is one of the most underrated points of the industry and that the starting material has a great effect on the final product and it should be taken in to account more seriously. Therefore, regarding the first rule of Campbell’s 10 Rules of Casting, in this study, the quality of the starting material of supply chains for a wheel manufacturer was investigated. Chemical compositions were compared, fluidity tests, mechanical tests and bifilm indexes of these various sources and ingots were measured and a final quality index was proposed to create a reference for the quantification of quality of supplier’s ingots. This new index was compared with the rejection rates.

Bulut, Ayhan
The aim of this study is to encourage the development of pre-school teachers by raising their awareness about zero-waste and recycling activities. The need for this research is linked to the lack of prominence about the concept of zero-waste in pre-school programs in Turkey, and also the limited inclusion of opportunities for pre-school students to learn about recycling strategies. This research uses a qualitative design and adopts a case-study approach. The study group was purposefully sampled using criterion-sampling. Interviews were conducted with forty pre-school education teachers who volunteered to support the research, had at least five years experience, and had received training about zero-waste and recycling activities. The interviews with pre-school education teachers were conducted once and took approximately fifty minutes. Content analysis and descriptive analysis approaches were employed. The research findings were based on each interview question, and tables were created under five headings. Research findings indicate that most of the pre-school education teachers stated the children's awareness about zero-waste and recycling was insufficient during the pre-school education years. Teachers have stated that awareness about zero-waste and recycling can be enriched through the inclusion of specific content and the use of visual materials in pre-school education programs. Additionally, pre-school education teachers emphasized that using an educational game will make the learning process about zero-waste and recycling strategies more enjoyable and will also be the most suitable method in terms of the children's age and levels of development. On the other hand, teachers have stated that in order to raise children's awareness about zero-waste and recycling, there should be further studies conducted about how such awareness will contribute to the social and emotional development of children as well as studies about how children can learn-by-doing.

Oztekin, Sebahat; Karbancioglu-Guler, Funda
In this study, various fruit were employed as biocontrol yeast reservoirs, and eleven distinct yeast cultures of Metschnikowia sp. belonging to 6 different species were identified with sequence-based analysis of the D1/D2 domain of 26S rDNA. For initial screening, Metschnikowia isolates were tested on Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cinerea, Penicillium digitatum, Penicillium expansum, and Alternaria alternata. The highest antagonism was obtained on green and blue Penicillium (83.63–100 %). All tested yeasts showed chitinase activity, while some had protease, pectinase, cellulase, β-1−3 glucanase, and gelatinase activities. Since lemons have high pectin content, three pectinase-free cultures at tested conditions with high in vitro antagonism on Penicillium were selected and used on lemons. The activities of the in vitro antifungal studies were found to be compatible with those of the in vivo, and P. digitatum's incidence was found to be higher than that of P. expansum on lemons. All tested pectinase-free Metschnikowia sp. lead to a significant reduction in the disease incidences and lesions at varying levels. The combined effect of lytic enzyme secretion, iron depletion, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) production determined the antifungal mechanism of action. M. aff. fructicola demonstrated the highest biocontrol efficacy against Penicillium on lemons with an increasing shelf-life. The use of tentatively pectinase-negative Metschnikowia sp. as an antifungal biocontrol agent on lemons was considered for the first time. The findings will shed light on the effective use of Metschnikowia sp. as a potential biofungicide against the growth of postharvest fungal pathogens.

Background: The purpose of the present study was to perform a high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis to discover mutations in gene exons 5–8 of tumor protein p53 (TP53), as well as the relationships of these mutations to clinical parameters in prostate cancer (PC). Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from 50 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues with PC. Mutations in exons 5 and 8 of TP53 were analyzed using the HRM method. Sanger sequencing was used to describe mutations. Results: According to the HRM analysis results, 21 (42%) PC samples had different normalized and shifted melting curves from other samples. Mutations in TP53 exons 5 and8 were observed in 12 (24%) patients by the Sanger method. The detection sensitivity of the HRM method in exon 5 and exon 8 mutations was 66.7% and 50%, respectively. PSA levels of PC patients with TP53 mutation were found to be lower than that of patients with no mutation (p = 0.8270). However, we did not find any correlations between TP53 mutations and clinical parameters (p > 0.05). Conclusions: HRM analysis is a simple, rapid, and efficient mutation-scanning method for known/unknown mutations in TP53 exons 5and8, as well as an attractive method for detection of mutations and their analysis in FFPE tissues. Additional studies with larger patient populations are warranted to confirm the correlation between the TP53 mutations and PC risk.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3Design of an efficient vehicle-actuated signal control logic for signalized intersections
Cakici, Ziya; Murat, Yetis Sazi; Aydin, Metin Mutlu
The effectiveness of fixed-time management systems dramatically decreases in case of fluctuating traffic demands in signalized intersection approaches. The result is the utter waste of time in traffic to be followed by material, psychological, and ecological problems. In recent years, to minimize the negative impacts of these problems, many researchers have focused on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). As it is known, one of the applications of ITS is called vehicle-actuated (traffic-actuated) management systems. Because the success of these types of applications is directly related to the created control logic, the selection of the most proper control parameters for the created control logic is an important issue. This study aims to create an effective control logic and flow chart for the vehicle-actuated management system. At the end of the analyses, it is seen that the created vehicle-actuated management system can adapt to fluctuations in traffic demands in signalized intersection approaches. Average vehicle delays, fuel consumptions, and exhaust emissions can be reduced significantly by the created system. In case of fluctuations in traffic demands in intersection approaches, it is concluded that the performance of the intersection may increase enormously because of the created vehicle-actuated management system.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3Performance Analysis of Buck-Boost and SEPIC Converter for Commutation Torque Ripple Minimization in BLDC Motors
Çorapsız, Muhammed Reşit; Kahveci, Hakan
This paper discusses comparative analysis of Buck-Boost and SEPIC (Single Ended Primary Inductance) converters used in DC link voltage control technique to reduce torque ripple in Brushless Direct Current Motors (BLDCM). The aim of this study is to prove the efficiency of the aforementioned two converters, which have been adopted in many studies to reduce torque ripples caused by commutation, on the same motor parameters. Although BLDCM has many advantages, ripples in the generated torque have limited the use of these motors in applications requiring precise speed and torque. In this study, BLDCM was analyzed exhaustive mathematically and electrically and the problem that caused commutation torque ripples was explained in detail. The DC link voltage control has been proposed to suppressing torque ripples in the BLDCM. In addition, the link voltages required for reducing the torque ripples were obtained separately via both the Buck-Boost and the SEPIC converters. These converter topologies are examined under certain speed and torque conditions and the results were compared. When the results are evaluated together, it was observed that both converters performed the very closely performance each other. However, the Buck-Boost converter produced the desired voltage levels with less oscillation than the SEPIC converter.

- Kitap BölümüAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ4The Importance of Foreign Direct Investments in Turkey’s Export: A New Strategy for Low and Medium Tech Firms
Adalı, Zafer; Bilgin, Tuba
This research investigates the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and export operated by low-, medium low-, and medium high-tech firms in Turkey. For this purpose, a hidden cointegration approach developed by Hatemi and Iraoundaoust Hidden cointegration is conducted on data covering the period between 2006:Q1 and 2018:Q3. According to Hatemi and Irandoust (Asymmetric interaction between government spending and terms of trade volatility. Journal of Economic Studies 39(3):368–378, 2012), hidden cointegration, there is no long-run relationship between the cumulative positive shocks of Low Tech Export (LTX) and cumulative positive shocks of FDI; the same existence is obtained for the cumulative negative shock between the variables. The outcomes identify that LTX and FDI respond to shocks differently in Turkey. Moreover, the same results were found for Medium Low-Tech Export (MLTE) and FDI. In another saying, a positive and negative shock in MLTX does not proceed with positive and negative shocks in FDI. Nonetheless, a long-run relationship between Medium High-Tech Export (MHTE) and FDI concerning both the positive and negative cumulative shocks is also found. A positive shock in MHTX is associated with the influence of positive in FDI. Furthermore, a negative shock in MHTX is also linked to the impacts of negative in FDI. Thus, it is recommended that Companies and governments manage cooperatively with foreign investors, sustain and create locational advantages, and implement policies that lower costs because low and medium low-tech export plays a ruling role in export performance.

Literature that investigates the factors affecting problem-solving evaluates the cognitive and affective components, such as reading comprehension, metacognition, Mathematics anxiety, Mathematics attitude and Mathematics self-efficacy. Recently, studies have shown that Mathematics attitude and Mathematics self-efficacy as affective factors, and reading comprehension as a cognitive factor could play a crucial role in the problem-solving of middle school students. This study investigated the influence of reading comprehension skill, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitude on non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills. It is hypothesized that non-routine problem-solving skills are related to reading comprehension skills, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitudes. To achieve this aim, a reading comprehension skill test, a Mathematics self-efficacy perception scale, a Mathematics attitude scale and a non-routine problem-solving skill test were applied. The instruments were completed by 362 middle school students. A correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship of variables on non-routine problem-solving skills, and the predictive effects of the predictor variables on non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills were examined by hierarchical regression analysis. The analysis also showed that for middle-school students’ non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills, all related factors–reading comprehension, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitude were significant. Reading comprehension skills and Mathematics self-efficacy perception significantly predicted problem-solving skills, and both predictors explained a total of 22% of the total variance.

Yücel, Harun; Velu, Sabareesh K.P.
We present a MATLAB-based multiple particle tracking (mPosTracker) algorithm to detect and track crowded colloidal particles that are two-dimensionally imaged using digital video microscopy. Our algorithm adopts three optional detection methods using threshold settings namely; centroid method (CM), radial symmetry method (RSM) and partial radial symmetry method (pRSM). In contrast to other reported algorithms, it allows classifying a maximum of three types of particles based on area or intensity. Furthermore, we include a toolbox to perform quantitative particle analysis like number density, trajectories with mean square displacement, and Voronoi cells with six-fold bond parameters to reveal the physics of examined dataset. To demonstrate the abilities of mPosTracker, we show the analysis outcomes on synthetically and experimentally acquired time-lapse microscopy datasets. mPosTracker is suitable for studying the dynamics of crowd behaviour, self-assembly, and manipulation of multi-component colloids under external fields.
