Spiritual- Mystical Dimension in the Poems Of Bahtiyar Vahapzade

    Özkan, Ahmet

Bahtiyar Vahapzade is one of the most important literary figures of Azerbaijan and the Turkish World. Throughout his life, he penned works that prioritized national and spiritual values. The creation, internal conflicts and opposites of human beings, periods of life, love of homeland, were the main subjects of his art. The majority of the articles and theses written about him, were written by the literati which mostly focused on the figure rather than the content. The ones related to the content were limited to subjects such as their sensitivity on Turkish language, their national feelings and thoughts. The spiritual elements that feed all of this have not been sufficiently expressed. This article was written in order to identify the spiritual-mystical elements in his poems which, were not adequately dealt with in the studies about Vahapzâde. The limitation of our study, in which the synthesis interpretation method is used, constitutes the poems of Vahapzade. Several of his articles have also been cited in support of his ideas. As a result, the fact that Vahapzâde grew up in a traditional Turkish family, internalized the values he believed in by learning the traditions and customs of his family, and the discovery of the beauties in his essence revealed him as a spiritually strong personality. In his own words, he is a "suffering" person. Throughout his life, he has worried about the nation's independence and spirituality. His interest in ancient literature also enabled him to have knowledge of related spiritual dynamics. Despite the fact that he was not a Sufi, for reasons explained, his poems included spiritual-mystical elements, and his messages to the society rose on this basis. The research will offer a different perspective to the studies about Vahapzâde

Türkiye Türkçesi yazıdilinde bulunmayan, Türkiye Türkçesi ağızlarında birkaç kelime türetmişolan +AntA eki; yakınlık, benzerlik, genişletme, küçültme işlevi taşıyan+Aŋ (+An) eki ile küçültme eki +tA’nın birleşmesiyle oluşmuştur. TürkiyeTürkçesi ağızlarında kır kökünden türemiş, kıranta ile aynı anlamı taşıyanġırmansı, gırcıman gibi kelimelerin de bulunması, az da olsa +AntA eki iletüremiş başka kelimelerin de mevcut olması kelimenin Türkçe olduğunugösteren önemli delillerdir.

The Derivational Suffixes of the Dialects of Turkish I: The Derivational Suffixes Not Existing in Written Language

    Güzel, Ferdi

It is pointed out that the dialects of Turkish have more suffixes than the written language. Most of these suffixes are more practical and have many different functions that do not exist in the written language. In the written language aren’t approximately 140 of suffixes in the dialects of Turkish. It is seen that most of the suffixes used in historical dialects but forgotten in written language keep their existence in the dialects of Turkish. It is also seen that most of the suffixes that do not exist in our written language but used in modern dialects are in the dialects of Turkish with similar functions. Some of them are only seen in the dialects of Turkish in Turkey It is concluded that the words and forms in the dialects of Turkish enlighten many problems in the Turkish Language history and contribute to their solutions.

Do you know what happens in mind when we encounter a novel word while reading anewspaper, a paragraph or a short story? Via eye tracking technique, this study aimed togather clues about how our mind reacts to an unknown word while we read in anotherlanguage by examining word familiarity effects on eye movements during EFL reading. Aftera vocabulary test, eye movements of 60 EFL learners at intermediate level were recordedwhile they read identical sentence pairs including words with different length and frequency. The results showed that (1) total time spent on words and reanalysis times were predicted byvocabulary knowledge, (2) initial word processing was not predicted by vocabulary size (3)unfamiliar words attended more attention and required more cognitive effort than familiarwords, (4) familiar words are processed in similar time spans for English as L1 and L2 butunfamiliar words cause more cognitive load in EFL. The results were discussed incomparison to L1 eye movement research in reading and were evaluated regarding EFLreading in terms of noticing hypothesis, incidental vocabulary acquisition and EFL readinginstruction.

Gal suffix in the dialects of turkish in turkey

    Güzel, Ferdi

Turkish has a lot of derivative suffixes but some derivative suffixes are rarely seen. Limited samples recorded throughout the history of language are not sufficient to detect the structure and functions of these rare derivative suffixes. In that case, the local dialects must be the first resource to look at. Local dialects are of great importance in terms of protecting the forgotten elements of language and having richer grammatical forms. To enlighten the structure and functions of the suffix of -GAl that is only encountered in a few words in historical and modern dialects, words that are formed with this suffix in the dialects of Turkish in Turkey will contribute a lot. The suffix of GAl is seen in a few words in historical and modern dialects, only in the word of tutkal (glue) in the Turkish in Turkey. We can have a little information about the structure and function of the suffix as it is rarely used. Analysing the data in the dialects of Turkish in Turkey, this suffix has functional similarity with the suffixes of -GAn / -AğAn. In the dialects of Turkish in Turkey, some words have forms derived with the suffixes of both -GAl and -GAn / -AğAn in the same meaning. This arouse the idea that this suffix has developed from the suffix -GAn/ -AğAn with the -n > -l transformation. Analysed the data in the dialects of Turkish in Turkey, it is thought that there may be more than one suffix of -GAl coming from different resources. In some words it has same function wıth suffıx of -GIn /GUn. In some words, the suffix of -GAl (-k-Al or -GA-l) that was constructed with the combination of -k- or -GA- intensification suffixes and l/ -Al deverbal nouns can also be thought. This suffix which is rarely seen in historical and modern dialects has derived nearly forty words in the dialects of Turkish in Turkey. This suffix has derived adjectives that mean suitability, convenience, excessiveness, ability. At the same time, it has made a few tools’ names with meaning of excessiveness, convenience. In the dialects of Turkish in Turkey, this suffix is mostly added to the root with one syllable. It has been determined that the suffix has variations of -eğel, -ekel, -ğAl, -ḫal and -gar. The Dialects of Turkish in Turkey is a treasure filled with data that enlighten the formation and functions that are rarely encountered in historical and modern dialects and contribute to the solution of many problems in the history of Turkish language

Measuring english language teacher candidates' intercultural sensitivity: a key element to foster intercultural communicative competence

    Köroğlu, Zeynep Çetin

A multicultural and global society makes intercultural communication an indispensable part of communication. As an affective dimension of intercultural communicative competence, intercultural sensitivity has drawn the attention of scholars throughout the past years. However, there is still a misperception about intercultural sensitivity with other cognitive, affective and behavioral domains of intercultural communication such as intercultural awareness, intercultural adroitness and intercultural communicative competence. Important scholars in the field define intercultural sensitive persons as those who are conscious in their interactions and accept interlocutors' ideas without judgment of their personal complexity. In this angle, English language teachers' sensitivity towards other cultures has significant meaning to make language learners better foreign language learners and speakers (Crawford, 2008). Thus, the current study aims to investigate English Language Teacher candidates' intercultural sensitivity level. In this study, ISS (intercultural sensitivity scale, Chen and Starosta, 2000) is used to measure the results of the 61 student teachers who participated in the study. Participants' intercultural sensitivity levels are analyzed in SPSS due to interaction engagement, respect for cultural differences, interaction confidence, enjoyment and attentiveness. The results show that English language teacher candidates enjoy interacting with people from other cultures and they are sensitive towards cultural differences and complexities

The unknown interlinear turkish koran translation belonging to old anatolian turkish period

    Akpinar, Ahmet

Today, some related research on Turkish Koran translation manuscripts gave rise to the thoughts that first Turkish translation of Koran was made by the Turkish members of the board who made the first Farsi translation of Koran and this Turkish manuscript was lost or destroyed in time due to reasons unknown. Rylands, British Museum or. 9515 and TİEM 73 are significant among Turkish Koran translations which are thought to have been inspired by the first translation mentioned above. Moreover, Hekimoğlu and Anonim Tefsir texts are also considered to be similar to this first translation. The Koran translations written in Oghuz language in the Old Anatolian Period is also thought to have been copied from certain translations. MK 06 Mil Yz B 502 coded manuscript, determined by us, is also considered to have been written or copied towards the end of the Old Anatolian Turkish Period. In the manuscript, partial comment method was employed. Although this manuscript has similarities with especially in Bursa GK No: 1 dated as H 804/M 1401 manuscript which is one of the pre determined manuscripts in terms of lexical matchings; it is hard to propose that the two manuscripts are copied from the same source. That is to say, in the study we conducted on he linguistic features of the manuscript, noun and verb inflection differences, nearly no use of archaic words and affixes and even translator’s personal preferences on the text strenghen this statement. These preferences employed through Turkish Word groups, possesive constructions and rarely quotes, distinguish this manuscript from other Koran translations. Additionally, the manuscript is valuable regarding syntax as Arabic equivalents can be found and ortographic differences of Turkish Word groups can be seen. In the ortography of the text, beside the effect of Old Uyghur Turkish and Arabic-Persian written tradition, the effects of spoken language can also be observed. Some other structural differences in the text are tense shifts in verb inflections and succesive voice affixes adapted to Arabic patterns. The Koran translations bear significance to follow the development and maturation of Turkish language, to learn how new Islamic concepts were refined by the old Turkish religions and Turkish culture. Besides, as each translation inhabits archaic features and structures with the preferences of authors or copyist,Koran translations give invaluable information regarding vocabulary

Effect of language and literature on individiuals and society during war atmosphere: a textbook example

    Bulut, Mesut

The wars broke out after the Balkan War and immediately after it left deep scars in the memory of Turkish nation. These war years when thousands of Muslim Turkish people were slaughtered were called “disaster years” and they were printed in history as disgrace because these conflict years were full of real life stories which were painful and miserable. For example, cross was drawn on their foreheads without considering whether they are children or not, religious men were hanged from their turbans, and innocent girls were dragged along and exposed to any kind of cruelty. During this period, such disadvantages as an enormous empire and her remaining balance facing extinction due to the conspiracies of European states and emergence of treachery from everywhere caused sorrow and despair on Muslim Turkish nation and therefore, various movements of ideas were introduced; however, they did not yield results and anywhere in the motherland was occupied and tyrannized. In such an atmosphere, many patriotic intellectuals and writers who chose ideology of Turkish nationalism as their motto made an effort to bring educational aspect of language and literature into the forefront. For that purpose, they performed tasks to increase the motivation and morale of Turkish nation. Specifically, Young Pens (Genç Kalemler) which was begun in the city of Thessalonica in 1911 by the three writers who were most representative of the movement: Ziya Gökalp , Ömer Seyfettin, and Ali Canip Yöntem, had many fans as a result of the Balkan wars and had a very important role for the Turkism to gain strength. With New Language Movement " (Turkish: "Yeni Lisan"), they pointed out that language must be simplified, the effects of foreign language and rules on Turkish must be removed and the differences between the oral language and the written language must be removed. Therefore, this language and literature movement aimed at unity and nationalization in language. In this period, many nationalistic intellectuals and writers such as Ömer Seyfettin, Ali Canip Yöntem, Ziya Gökalp and M. Fuad Köprülü used language and literature as a means of education to educate and raise the awareness of the society. Moreover, they were not indifferent to the conditions of the country; on the contrary, examples of patriotism were actively exhibited, and remedies were searched for the liberation of the Turkish nation. For that purpose, national sensitivity was mentioned extensively primarily in Tasvir-i Efkâr (Picture of Ideas) newspaper, such magazines as Türk Yurdu, Türk Ocağı and Türk Derneği and in the TurkishLiterature textbooks written for the courses which were going to be taught in schools belonging to Maarif Nezareti (Ministry of National Education) and it was the aim to wake up people from “dreaming” and to raise their awareness. In this sense, language and literature was used as a means with the pens of intellectuals and writers in the war of independence during the Balkan wars and afterwards. The aim of the study was to detect and evaluate for what purposes language and literature was used as educational means during the war atmosphere in the Balkan Wars and afterwards . For that purpose, the example texts in Turkish-Literature textbook called Millî Kıraat (Fifth Part) by M. Fuad Köprülü for the 8th grades in primary education and the 9th grades in secondary education in Ottoman Period were used. This study was carried out via document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. The study shed light on the history, the attention was drawn on the roles and functions of literary texts in language and literature education and it aimed at making contributions to the future studies

Studies by ataturk to simplify turkish and an evaluation of discussions on language in this context

    Bulut, Mesut

Every society and nation has leaders who they value and respect. These leaders were engraved on the community's memory and they are unique people who sacrificed themselves for the sake of their country's and nation's welfare and happiness. Churchill for England, Washington for the USA, Napoleon for France, Gandhi for India are considered as important leaders for their nation and historical personage. Ataturk's position and historical personage are very different for Turkish nation and oppressed nations. Ataturk is not a one dimensional leader. Ataturk, with his revolutions, founded a new nation and beyond being a historical personage, he is one of the rare leaders who had many qualities such as being a citizen, soldier and an intellectual. The life of Ataturk has become a subject of thousands of research not only in Turkey but also in many countries in the world and his life has been studied as a course. Language is the primary value which Ataturk placed emphasis on. Language can be defined as the common value and life philosophy of a nation. Language is undoubtedly the most important means to provide solidarity and unity in a country. A common language spoken by the individuals who constitute the nation is the most important element which makes a nation. Language, the most important indicator of national conscience, is the symbol of bearing the trace of a nation which an individual belongs to. For a nation to evoke the sense of existence socially there is a bond between the way of thinking and feelings, history, language, and culture. At this point, because Ataturk especially believed that the foundations of the new Republic would be actualized by establishing an understanding of national language, he initially preferred to solve the problems of Turkish, an educational and official language. For that purpose, he actualized Language Reform, and he placed emphasis on simplification /nativisation of Turkish. Turkish Language Association was founded for that purpose and Ataturk wanted these problems to be solved. This study aimed at exploring the nativisation/ simplification studies carried out for Turkish from Republic period to today by means of presenting Ataturk's point of view and evaluations were made about the studies which were carried out for the purpose of nativisation/ simplification of Turkish and its becoming a language of science and education and discussions on Turkish language such as liquidationism, fabrication, Ottoman Turkish, language fascism, pure Turkish (Turkish made up largely of words that are etymologically Turkish), and it also aimed at solutions were suggested on current problems of Turkish.

Effects of contradictions in terms in teaching grammar on teaching turkish

    Bulut, Mesut

Grammar is the set of structural rules governing the composition of clauses, phrases, and words in any given natural language. The term refers also to the study of such rules, and this field includes morphology, syntax, and phonology, often complemented by phonetics, semantics, and pragmatics. Undoubtedly, language is the primary element that makes a society and a nation. The unity of language is crucial because it is the primary element that what makes a nation. Therefore, language education is a subject which every nation must lay emphasis on and pay attention to. It is an undeniable fact that as a nation there are some problems in the development of our language. Teaching grammar is the description and explanation process of grammar meaningfully within the framework of set of rules. Thus, instruction of grammar structures which compose the main structure of a language is a condition which must be approached delicately. It is a fact that while teaching Turkish grammar, contradictions in terms are experienced due to some problems. Because the course contents identified by Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and teachers and preservice teachers raised according to different academic perspectives encountered differences in the curriculum of Ministry of National Education (MEB), being in a dilemma, they are asked to forget a set of knowledge implementation…being exposed to such expressions as “Here is not a university ...” It is possible to evaluate such approaches encountered in teaching grammar as the first reflections of contradictions in terms. Of course, there will be different approaches to grammar, but if different approaches begin to threaten the unity of language, it becomes very important to approach this subject carefully. This study discussed the reflections of contradictions in terms in teaching Turkish grammar on language and the answer to the question what problems such contradictions in terms caused about the unity in language was sought. It was found in the study that contradictions in terms in teaching grammar triggered instability in language; therefore, it was concluded that all educators and linguistics should give some thought to this subject and seek ways to solve the problem. A set of evaluations were made about some contradiction based problems with this study and solutions were suggested for these problems
