Kurt, Mehmet Ali; Yalçın, Sezen; Güler, Cüneyt; Güven, Onur; Yıldırım, Ümit
Wetlands are transitional between terrestrial and aquatic environments and have essential ecological functions. Unfortunately, due to anthropogenic activities and climate change, the area covered by wetlands is gradually decreasing worldwide, causing deterioration and loss of their critical and vital ecological functions. One of these degraded wetlands is the Hürmetçi Sazlığı, a nationally important wetland located in the Kayseri Province of Turkey. This study aims to determine the spatial and vertical (depth profile) distribution and the sources of the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) As, Cd, Pb, and Zn in the soils around the Hürmetçi Sazlığı Wetland (HSW) and to evaluate environmental risk factors using various soil quality indicators. According to the results obtained, it was determined that some parts of the wetland soils were significantly polluted in terms of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn. The concentrations (in mg/kg) of these PTEs in the soil around the wetland ranged between 9.12 and 273.9 for As, 0.38 and 1119.46 for Cd, 3.59 and 1807.66 for Pb, and 41.68 and 77,287.5 for Zn. Several soil quality indicators, including the Enrichment Factor (EF), Contamination Factor (CF), Ecological Risk Index (ERI), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI), were calculated to determine the quality and pollution levels of the collected soil samples. According to the calculated RI values, 70 out of 77 sites sampled in the area around the HSW are in the “High Risk” class in terms of all studied PTEs. The soil profile samples indicated that the topsoil (0–50 cm) was heavily contaminated by all PTEs, particularly near a zinc processing plant established in 1976. In addition, parts of the wetland further away from the Zn processing plant were also affected by arsenic pollution from geogenic sources, which can be associated with Plio-Quaternary volcanic activity in the region.

Bee products are an important source of nutrients and bioactive phytochemicals. This study aimed to determine the chemical composition (proximate composition, general phytochemical composition, sugar, and phenolic profiles) of four different products (honey, bee pollen, bee bread, and propolis), obtained from the same apiary, as well as to assess their biological activity through antioxidant and enzyme inhibition assays (α-amylase, α-glucosidase, lipase, AchE, neuraminidase, angiotensin-converting enzyme, urease, trypsin, tyrosinase, carbonic anhydrase, thioredoxin reductase, adenosine deaminase). Clear differences were observed among the samples in terms of both chemical composition and biological activity. The analysis revealed that bee pollen exhibited the highest carbohydrate content (87.9%), while propolis was identified as the richest source of phenolic compounds (14,858.9 mg/kg) among the analyzed samples. Propolis exhibited the highest biological activity in all applied antioxidant assays (CUPRAC, DPPH•, and ABTS•+) and in most enzyme inhibition assays. Notably, the α-glucosidase inhibition activity of propolis was comparable to that of the reference standard. In addition, honey exhibited remarkable trypsin inhibition, also comparable to the applied standard. These findings highlight the diverse bioactivities of hive products, which could play a key role in promoting health and preventing diseases.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2A Numerical Study of Topography and Roughness of Sloped Surfaces Using Process Simulation Data for Laser Powder Bed Fusion
Aydogan, Beytullah; Chou, Kevin
The simulation of additive manufacturing has become a prominent research area in the past decade. Process physics simulations are employed to replicate laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) manufacturing processes, aiming to predict potential issues through simulated data. This study focuses on calculating surface roughness by utilizing 3D surface topology extracted from simulated data, as surface roughness significantly influences part quality. Accurately predicting surface roughness using a simulation remains a persistent challenge. To address this challenge, the L-PBF technique with two different cases (pre- and post-contouring) was simulated using two-step process physics simulations. The discrete element method was utilized to simulate powder spreading, followed by the Flow-3D melting simulation. Ten layers were simulated at three different linear energy density (LED) combinations for both cases, with samples positioned at a 30-degree angle to accommodate upskin and downskin effects. Furthermore, a three-dimensional representation of the melted region for each layer was generated using the thermal gradient output from the simulated data. All generated 3D layers were stacked and merged to consolidate a 3D representation of the overall sample. The surfaces (upskin, downskin, and side skins) were extracted from this merged sample. Subsequently, these surfaces were analyzed, and surface roughness (Sa values) was calculated using MATLAB. The obtained values were then compared with experimental results. The downskin surface roughness results from the simulation were found to be within the range of the experimental results. This alignment is attributed to the fact that the physics simulation primarily focuses on melt pool depth and width. These promising findings indicate the potential for accurately predicting surface roughness through simulation.

Mercan, Emin
This study aimed to determine the effects of the ozone treatment of film-forming solutions (FFSs) containing whey protein concentrate (WPC) and gelatine on biopolymer films’ physical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Film samples were produced from a FFS that was ozone-treated at 0 (control), 5, 10, and 30 min. Ozone treatment caused an increase in the pH values of the FFS, whereas the zeta potential remained negative. The films became lighter in colour, slightly greenish, and more opaque with longer ozonation times. The control sample showed the highest thermogravimetric weight loss (92.15%). The weight loss of the samples decreased with increasing ozone treatment time. The application of ozone treatment on the FFS enhanced the films’ mechanical properties. Increased ozone treatment time improved the film samples’ tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness values. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that the ozone treatment of FFS containing whey protein concentrate and gelatine can significantly enhance the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of biopolymer films. These results highlight the potential of ozone treatment as a viable method for improving the performance and quality of biopolymer films used in food packaging, offering promising advantages for sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging solutions.

- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Review of In Situ Detection and Ex Situ Characterization of Porosity in Laser Powder Bed Fusion Metal Additive Manufacturing
Aydogan, Beytullah; Chou, Kevin
Over the past decade, significant research has focused on detecting abnormalities in metal laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing. Effective online monitoring systems are crucial for enhancing process stability, repeatability, and the quality of final components. Therefore, the development of in situ detection mechanisms has become essential for metal L-PBF systems, making efficient closed-loop control strategies to adjust process parameters in real time vital. This paper presents an overview of current in situ monitoring systems used in metal L-PBF, complemented by ex situ characterizations. It discusses in situ techniques employed in L-PBF and evaluates the applicability of commercial systems. The review covers optical, thermal, acoustic, and X-ray in situ methods, along with destructive and non-destructive ex situ methods like optical, Archimedes, and X-ray characterization techniques. Each technique is analyzed based on the sensor used for defect detection and the type or size of defects. Optical in situ monitoring primarily identifies large defects from powder bed abnormalities, while thermal methods detect defects as small as 100 µm and keyholes. Thermal in situ detection techniques are notable for their applicability to commercial devices and efficacy in detecting subsurface defects. Computed tomography scanning excels in locating porosity in 3D space with high accuracy. This study also explores the advantages of multi-sensor in situ techniques, such as combining optical and thermal sensors, and concludes by addressing current research needs and potential applications of multi-sensor systems.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Foundational Engineering of Artificial Blood Vessels’ Biomechanics: The Impact of Wavy Geometric Designs
Yilmaz, Galip
The design of wavy structures and their mechanical implications on artificial blood vessels (ABVs) have been insufficiently studied in the existing literature. This research aims to explore the influence of various wavy geometric designs on the mechanical properties of ABVs and to establish a foundational framework for advancing and applying these designs. Computer-aided design (CAD) and finite element method (FEM) simulations, in conjunction with physical sample testing, were utilized. A geometric model incorporating concave and convex curves was developed and analyzed with a symbolic mathematical tool. Subsequently, a total of ten CAD models were subjected to increasing internal pressures using a FEM simulation to evaluate the expansion of internal areas. Additionally, physical experiments were conducted further to investigate the expansion of ABV samples under pressure. The results demonstrated that increased wave numbers significantly enhance the flexibility of ABVs. Samples with 22 waves exhibited a 45% larger area under 24 kPa pressure than those with simple circles. However, the increased number of waves also led to undesirable high-pressure gradients at elevated pressures. Furthermore, a strong correlation was observed between the experimental outcomes and the simulation results, with a notably low error margin, ranging from 19.88% to 3.84%. Incorporating wavy designs into ABVs can effectively increase both vessel flexibility and the internal area under pressure. Finally, it was found that expansion depending on the wave number can be efficiently modeled with a simple linear equation, which could be utilized in future designs.

Saritaş, Serdar; Tarlaci, Sultan; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Guneş, Hüseyin
Objective: In this study, we aimed to examine the healing trend of hepatic encephalopathy after transplantation surgery in patients with liver failure. Method: We conducted this descriptive and cross-sectional study with the participation of liver transplant recipients. A personal information form, the West Haven Criteria (WHC), the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS), and the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS) were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using Chi-squared tests, ANOVA, and paired-samples t-tests. Results: As time progressed after liver transplantation, hepatic encephalopathy stages regressed (p < 0.01). We found that liver transplant recipients with end-stage hepatic encephalopathy were mostly within the first 6 months after transplantation, while patients with first-stage hepatic encephalopathy had received liver transplants more than 2 years ago (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The results of our study revealed that hepatic encephalopathy stages regressed after transplantation, but there was no complete recovery. This highlights the need to develop new treatment strategies other than liver transplantation for the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Classification of Student Leadership Profiles in Diverse Governance Settings: Insights from Pisa 2022
Görgülü, Deniz; Coşkun, Fatma; Sipahioğlu, Mete; Demir, Mustafa
Student leadership prepares students for responsibilities, such as taking on specific tasks and assuming leadership roles in their future personal and professional lives. Developing students’ leadership profiles is among the important goals of educational systems aiming for future generations to take responsibility and advance their countries. With this perspective in mind, the PISA assessment includes items to measure students’ leadership behaviors. This study aims to extract student leadership profiles from the leadership-related items in the PISA 2022 application, using data from Cambodia, Peru, Paraguay, and Guatemala, which have different governance systems and cultural characteristics. The second purpose of the research is to determine the distribution of the identified leadership profiles in these countries and explain them in the context of governance and cultural characteristics. Latent class analysis was used to determine student leadership profiles. Accordingly, two-class and three-class latent models were found to be the most suitable models to explain student profiles. While the distinction between student profiles is more pronounced in the two-class model, the three-class model provides more detailed information about student profiles. In this respect, two-class and three-class latent models are reported comparatively. In the two-class latent model, students are labeled as the “Shy or Lack of Self-Confidence Group” and the “Active Leader or Influential Group”. In the three-class latent model, students are labeled as the “Moderate or Passive Leader Group”, the “Strong Leader or Influential Group”, and the “Avoidant or Leadership-Uncomfortable Group”. In both models, it is one of the striking findings that Cambodian students are in the low leadership profile, and Peruvian students are in the high leadership profile.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1Food Price Bubbles: Food Price Indices of Turkey, the FAO, the OECD, and the IMF
Akyol Özcan, Kübra
Food price bubbles are a phenomenon in which the cost of some food items or food commodities climbs quickly and unreasonably before collapsing due to reasons such as speculation, supply and demand imbalances, meteorological occurrences, and governmental actions. Governments and academics keep an eye on food prices to spot and address these bubbles. The aim of this paper is to analyze the food price bubble phenomenon despite the global slowdown by examining its origins, consequences, and policy solutions. The study’s contribution lies in its investigation of the presence of a potential bubble formation in food prices, which have experienced a surge globally and particularly in Turkey in recent years. The research examines the behavior of bubble formation in food prices in Turkey, the FAO, the OECD, and the IMF between 1992 and 2022 using the ADF, SADF, and GSADF tests. These tests can help identify when asset prices deviate significantly from their fundamental values and may be at risk of a sharp correction. The TUR, FAO, OECD, and IMF variables all show distinct bubble formations, with the TUR variable having 130 periods from 1995 to 2006, the FAO having 8 price bubble occurrences, the OECD having 12 different bubble formations, and the IMF having 4 distinct bubble formations. The results indicate the existence of food price bubbles that demonstrate disparities from their inherent values grounded in market fundamentals.

İspirli, Hümeyra
In this study, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains were isolated from traditional fermented pickles, and among the identified strains, Leuconostoc citreum HE29 with a strong slimy colony profile was further selected to determine the physicochemical and techno-functional properties of its exopolysaccharide (EPS). Glucose was the only sugar monomer in the core unit of EPS HE29 detected by HPLC analysis, and glucan HE29 revealed 7.3 kDa of molecular weight. Structural characterization of glucan HE29 by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that EPS HE29 was a dextran-type EPS containing 5.3% levels of (1 → 3)-linked α-D-glucose units. This structural configuration was also supported by FT-IR analysis, which also demonstrated the functional groups within the dextran HE29 structure. In terms of thermal properties detected by TGA and DSC analysis, dextran HE29 demonstrated a degradation temperature of around 280 °C, showing its strong thermal features. A semi-crystalline nature was observed for dextran HE29 detected by XRD analysis. Finally, AFM and SEM analysis revealed tangled network-like properties and web-like branched structures for dextran HE29, respectively. These findings suggest the importance of plant-based fermented products as LAB sources in obtaining novel EPS structures with potential techno-functional roles.
