- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2Enhanced freshwater production in prism-type solar stills using a fresnel lens system with comprehensive energy-exergy and cost analysis
Ceviz, Mehmet Akif; Köksal, Hüseyin; Afshari, Faraz; Muratçobanoğlu, Burak
This study presents the development and performance evaluation of a novel prism-type solar still integrated with a Fresnel lens concentration system designed to concentrate solar radiation on an external spiral heat exchanger. Experimental investigations were conducted under two different saline water flow rates of 0.05 and 0.1 kg/min. The performance of system was comprehensively analyzed in terms of fresh water yield, thermal efficiency, exergy efficiency, and economic viability. The heated saline water and resultant vapor were directed into the prism-shaped condensation chamber, where condensation occurred efficiently. The experimental results demonstrated that lower saline water flow rates led to higher water temperatures and enhanced evaporation rates, thereby increasing freshwater productivity. In contrast, higher flow rates resulted in greater accumulation of saline water within the basin, reducing the evaporation rate and thus lowering overall productivity. The proposed design uniquely combines geometric enhancement via a prism-shaped condensation chamber with solar concentration through a Fresnel lens, enabling a dual-effect improvement in energy absorption and condensation efficiency, an approach not previously reported in the literature for solar desalination systems. The system achieved thermal and exergy efficiencies of 22.95 and 15.50%, respectively, at a saline water flow rate of 0.05 kg/min, producing 92 g of clean water in 60 min. Furthermore, the cost analysis conducted indicated a cost of $0.2546 per liter for this scenario.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ4Climate-driven synchronization of honey bee flight activity and plant phenology in Türkiye: development of a Beekeeping Climate Suitability Index (BCSI)
Erdoğan, Yaşar; Erdoğan, Ümmügülsüm
Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) provide essential pollination services that depend on the temporal synchronization between flight activity and plant flowering phenology, both strongly influenced by climatic conditions. However, this relationship remains insufficiently quantified at large spatial and temporal scales. In this study, we quantified climate-driven honey bee flight activity and its alignment with flowering phenology of major nectar plants in Türkiye using ERA5-Land data for the period 1981–2023. Suitable flight days were defined based on temperature (≥12°C) and precipitation (0 mm), and seasonal suitability was evaluated at a monthly scale. A composite Beekeeping Climate Suitability Index (BCSI) was developed by integrating flight activity, flowering overlap and nectar flow window. The number of suitable flight periods ranged between 4 and 7 months (mean ≈5.5), indicating substantial interannual variability. Flight flowering synchrony was low for early-spring species (23–35%) but reached 100% for summer species. BCSI values ranged from 0.44 to 1.00, capturing variability in climatic suitability for beekeeping. These findings demonstrate that climatic variability plays a decisive role in shaping bee plant interactions and provide a quantitative basis for climate-informed beekeeping management.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ2Sorting chiral active Brownian particles with radially modulated optical fields
Yücel, Harun
This study presents a numerical investigation of sorting chiral active Brownian particles using radially modulated optical fields. How these factors affect particle trajectories and spatial distributions is examined by systematically varying particle parameters such as self-propulsion speed, angular velocity, and optical fringe modulation. It is found that the average orbit radius of the particle trajectory strongly depends on the ratio of the self-propulsion speed to the average velocity induced by the moving fringe pattern. In particular, the average orbit radius converges to the theoretical orbit radius defined by the ratio of the self-propulsion speed to the angular velocity in the regime where the self-propulsion speed is greater than the fringe-induced velocity. In mixtures of particles with differing chirality, the dynamic response to circular fringe patterns enables effective classification based on motility. These findings suggest that structured light fields can be used to manipulate and selectively sort chiral active particles, which have potential applications in optical micromanipulation and active matter research.

Türk, Adem; Öztürk, Mesut
This research examined middle school grade 5–8 students’ conceptualization of the equal sign. The study employed a cross-sectional approach. Eight middle school students studying in official public schools in Turkey participated in the study. The study’s data were collected through a clinical interview that utilized eight open-ended questions, covering topics such as arithmetic, pre-algebra, proportional relationship, and algebra. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the study data. Although previous studies showed that students saw the equal sign as write a result, the results of this research, which is a follow-up study, revealed that students did not think of the equal sign as write a result.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Self-Regulation and Mathematics Anxiety: The Conditional Mediating Role of Mathematical Language Self-Efficacy and Implications for Inclusive Education
Öztürk, Mesut; Ada Yildiz, Kübra; Charitaki, Garyfalia
In this quantitative study, we investigated the conditional mediating role of students’ mathematical language self-efficacy in the relationship between self-regulation and mathematics anxiety. The study employed a relational research design and included survey data from 706 middle school students attending public schools in Turkey. Findings indicated that both self-regulation and perceived self-efficacy in mathematical language use were significantly associated with mathematics anxiety. Moreover, the effect of self-regulation on mathematics anxiety was significantly mediated by students’ perceptions of their ability to understand and use mathematical language self-efficacy. The indirect effect was negative while the direct effect was positive, indicating a suppression (competitive mediation) effect, whereby self-regulation exerts both anxiety-reducing and potentially anxiety-inducing influences through different pathways. Conditional mediation analysis further revealed that this mediating effect varied as a function of students’ perceived academic support, with the indirect effect being non-significant for students who did not receive support. Measurement invariance across gender and grade level was examined to ensure that the constructs were measured equivalently across groups. These findings highlight the importance of fostering both self-regulation skills and mathematical language proficiency, particularly in contexts where students may lack sufficient support. These findings provide a theoretically grounded and practically relevant framework for understanding mathematics anxiety within inclusive mathematics education contexts.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1A natural nephroprotective adjuvant for cancer chemotherapy: Rosmarinic acid disrupts IL-17 A-Ferroptosis coupling in Ifosfamide-induced renal injury
Süzen Celbek, Büşra; Şimşek, Hasan; Akaras, Nurhan; Kandemir, Özge; Kızıl, Hamit Emre; Mutlu, Hüseyin; Kandemir, Fatih Mehmet
Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a natural polyphenol with established pleiotropic protective effects. Ifosfamide (IFA) is a potent antineoplastic agent whose clinical utility is severely limited by dose-dependent nephrotoxicity, primarily mediated by its metabolite, chloroacetaldehyde (CAA). This study aimed to investigate whether RA protects against IFA-induced nephrotoxicity and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. Male Wistar albino rats (n = 7 per group) were allocated into four groups: Control, RA-only (50 mg/kg, p.o., 2 days), IFA-only (a single 500 mg/kg, i.p. dose), and IFA + RA. Serum biochemical markers (urea, creatinine), renal oxidative stress parameters (MDA, GSH, SOD, CAT, GPx), gene expression levels (NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-17 A, ACT1, TRAF6, Caspase-3, Bax, Bcl-2, PTGS2, GPX4, TfR1), and histopathological/immunohistochemical analyses (KIM-1, Nephrin, Caspase-3) were performed 24 h post-administration. IFA induced severe renal dysfunction, marked oxidative stress, and extensive histopathological damage. Mechanistically, IFA initiated a pathogenic cascade activating intrinsic apoptosis and ferroptosis, driven by a self-sustaining IL-17 A-TRAF6-NF-κB inflammatory loop. RA co-treatment (50 mg/kg) significantly reversed all functional, biochemical, and histological damage by strategically breaking this crosstalk, restoring redox homeostasis, and simultaneously restraining both cell death programs. In conclusion, RA protects against IFA nephrotoxicity by targeting the critical inflammation-ferroptosis coupling, positioning it as a highly promising adjuvant candidate for clinical use to mitigate IFA-induced renal injury.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of avoidance behavior due to fear of falling on dependency levels in activities of daily living and physical activity levels in older adults. This study is a cross-sectional research design. Data were collected between November 2023 and March 2024. A total of 506 individuals aged 65 years and over participated in the study (mean age 71.26). It was determined that the older adults had low level of fear of falling avoidance behaviors were fully independent in activities of daily living and had low level of physical activity. The multiple linear regression analysis showed that age, marital status, education, living with and fear of falling avoidance behavior affected daily living activities; age, place of residence, gender, income status, chronic disease status, and fear of falling avoidance behavior affected physical activity level (R2 = 0.183; R2 = 0.197, respectively). This study revealed the necessity of interventions to prevent fear of falling avoidance behaviors in order to increase the activities of daily living and physical activity levels among older adults.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Importance of Melt Cleaning Parameters on Reliability of Tensile Properties in A356 Alloy
Tigli, Ahmet; Uslu, Emin; Çolak, Murat; Dispinar, Derya
This study examines how melt treatment and pouring temperature affect the microstructure and mechanical properties of A356 aluminum alloy. Samples were cast under degassed, non-degassed, and upgassed conditions at 725, 750, and 775 °C. Melt quality was assessed using the reduced pressure test (RPT) and the bifilm index (BI), while microstructural features were analyzed via SEM and EDS. Tensile testing and Weibull statistics were used to evaluate mechanical performance and variability. Results showed that by improper degassing the reproducibility of mechanical properties decreased regardless of hydrogen content of the melt. When bifilm index (BI) was high (> 50 mm), the ductility was lowered and caused greater variability in strength and elongation. SEM confirmed large oxide films in samples, linked to the brittle fracture. The work also highlighted the importance of melt cleaning parameters for the reliability of cast aluminum alloys regardless of the hydrogen content.

This study focused on characterization and in situ application of reuterin E81, a potent antimicrobial compound produced by Limosilactobacillus (L.) reuteri E81, in white cheese. Strain E81 harbored the gene island containing pdu-cbi-cob-hem clusters responsible for reuterin production and this led to investigation of reuterin production for this strain. Initially, reuterin was synthesized from glycerol and characterized using NMR and FT-MIR analyses. Specific 1H and 13C NMR peaks confirmed the presence of reuterin components such as 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde and acrolein, while FT-MIR spectra indicated a distinct carbonyl (C=O) stretching band at 1717 cm−1, characteristic of aldehyde groups of reuterin system. Reuterin E81 showed dose dependent fungistatic and bactericidal effects, with complete inhibition of Gram-negative ones at lower doses. In white cheese production, four groups were prepared, including control and experimental groups with or without glycerol addition. The challenge test conducted over 30 days of cold storage demonstrated that white cheese samples containing L. reuteri E81 and glycerol achieved a significant reduction in microbial loads, with Escherichia (E.) coli counts decreasing from 6.4 log CFU/g to undetectable levels, which was attributed to in situ reuterin production. Meanwhile, total aerobic mesophilic bacterial counts declined progressively. These findings highlight the potential of in situ reuterin production as a natural strategy to enhance the microbiological safety of white cheese. However, it also inhibited the growth of S. thermophilus and L. reuteri cultures. The inhibitory effects of reuterin on beneficial lactic acid bacteria suggest the need for further optimization to balance food safety with starter culture viability.

Okur, Süheyb; Bayraktar, Bülent
Background: This study aims to examine the acute neurobiological effects of reciting the Quran from the Mushaf on salivary BDNF, Apelin, and Cortisol levels and their relationship with emotional state. Methods: The study employed a randomized pre-test post-test control group design conducted in Türkiye. The sample consisted of 100 healthy theology students (50 females, 50 males) aged 18–25, proficient in reciting the Quran in accordance with Tajweed rules. Participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (reciting the first nine verses of Surah Al-Imran, n = 50) or the control group (standardized passive resting, n = 50). Salivary BDNF, apelin, and cortisol levels were measured using the ELISA technique before and after the intervention. Emotional states were assessed using the Mood Scale and the Psychological Well-being Scale. Results: The experimental group exhibited a statistically significant increase in mean salivary BDNF and apelin levels and a significant decrease in cortisol levels following recitation compared to the passive control group (p < 0.05). In terms of gender, no statistically significant differences were observed in biomarker responses (p >.05). Correlation analysis revealed a significant “biological reciprocity,” where cortisol showed a negative correlation with apelin (r = -0.436, p < 0.001) and BDNF, while correlating positively with negative emotions. Conclusions: Reciting the Quran aloud acts as a rapid psychophysiological intervention that downregulates the HPA axis (reduced cortisol) and upregulates neurotrophic factors (increased BDNF and apelin). These findings suggest that structured recitation functions as a restorative neuroplasticity practice, promoting biological stress resilience associated with psychological well-being.

We consider an initial boundary value problem for a class of anisotropic parabolic Ni-Serrin type equations with nonstandard nonlinearity in a bounded smooth domain with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. Because the nonlinear perturbation leads to difficulties (it does not have a definite sign) in obtaining a priori estimates in the energy method, we had to modify the Tartar method significantly. Under suitable assumptions, we obtain the global existence, decay and extinction of solutions.

Glucansucrases catalyze the production of α-glucans using sucrose as substrate with distinct physicochemical characteristics originates from mainly the type of linkages, degree of branching and molecular mass. New forms of α-glucans can be produced by applying specific mutations to glucansucrases. In this study, a single and double mutation at Leu933 and Leu935 sites of glucansucrase E81 was applied and L933I and L933I-L935F sites modified glucansucrase was obtained. Structural characterisation of bioengineered α-glucans revealed that ratio of (1 → 3):(1 → 6) linked α-Glc units altered at L933I whereas no (1 → 3)-linked α-Glc units were presented for L933I-L935F modified glucansucrase detected by NMR analysis. Both bioengineered α-glucans had lower molecular weights in comparison to glucan E81 detected by GPC analysis. TGA and DSC analysis were applied to detect the thermal profiles of bioengineered α-glucans whereas FTIR and XRD analysis were applied to determine the alterations in the structural and physical nature of the bioengineered α-glucans, respectively. Finally, SEM and AFM analysis were applied to explore the morphological modifications of the bioengineered α-glucans. This study provides a better understanding for the potential role of final glucan structures on their physicochemical characteristics. Keywords: glucansucrase; carbohydrate engineering; mutation.

Hypericum Tourn. ex L. species exhibit well-documented neuropsychopharmacological activities, yet the central effects of Hypericum olympicum L. remain unknown. Given the frequent comorbidity of depressive symptoms and pain, this study aimed to characterize, for the first time, the antidepressant-like and antinociceptive profile of H. olympicum in mice. A methanolic extract of the aerial parts (HoE) was prepared, and its major phenolic constituents were identified by LC-MS/MS. At behaviorally active doses, HoE (2.5 and 5 mg/kg, i.p.) did not impair motor coordination in the Rota-rod test, in contrast to diazepam (2 mg/kg, p.o.), indicating the absence of neuromotor confounding effects. In both the tail suspension test (TST) and the modified forced swim test (MFST), HoE significantly reduced immobility, with effects comparable to those of fluoxetine (30 mg/kg, p.o.). In the MFST, increased swimming behavior without changes in climbing suggested a predominantly serotonergic component. HoE also produced marked antinociceptive effects in multiple nociceptive models. It increased response latencies in the hot-plate, tail-immersion, and tail-clip tests, reflecting activity in supraspinal and spinal thermal and mechanical nociceptive processing. In addition, HoE significantly reduced acetic acid-induced writhing, indicating visceral antinociceptive activity. Morphine (10 mg/kg, i.p.) served as the positive control in pain assays. LC-MS/MS analysis indicated the presence of major phenolic constituents, including hyperoside, myricetin derivatives, caffeoylquinic acid derivatives, a luteolin/kaempferol-type glucoside, and a biflavone of the biapigenin/amentoflavone type. These findings suggest that HoE possesses dual antidepressant-like and antinociceptive properties and support its further evaluation for disorders at the affect–pain interface.

This study experimentally investigates the thermal and electrical performance, economic feasibility, and environmental impacts of a hybrid energy system integrated with a parabolic trough collector (PTC) and thermoelectric generator (TEG). In the established system, solar energy is converted into electrical and thermal energy using a steam turbine and TEG. Experimental data indicate that the system operates with an average efficiency of 71.44%, which varies depending on the intensity of solar radiation. The overall energy efficiency of the system is calculated as 14.51%. In the economic analysis, the payback period of the designed system is approximately 5.4 years, while the levelised cost of energy production (LCOE) is calculated to be 0.075 USD kWh−1. The environmental assessment indicates that the system can prevent 356.18 kg of CO2 emissions annually and save approximately 1499.72 L of water. These findings demonstrate that hybrid systems offer an economically and environmentally sustainable and efficient alternative to energy production.

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus; Korkmaz, Huseyin; Iliev, Teodor
In this paper, a double-stage cognitive seeker optimization (DSC-SO) algorithm is developed for evaluating optimum design parameters of broadband microwave absorbers. The algorithm not only gives freedom of selecting different number of layers and optimizing the order of layers and their thickness in different stages (double-stage) but also utilizes a cognitive search to improve the optimization. Contributions of the cognitive search and the two stages of our algorithm are first examined to show its efficiency. Then, its performance has been evaluated for two different optimization problems (a broadband absorber for one incidence angle and a broadband absorber with multiple incidence angles) in comparison with similar algorithms in the literature. It has been shown that our algorithm determines either fewer number of layers or smaller overall absorber thickness or both when compared with the results of other algortihms. Finally, the effect of fabrication tolerance is conducted to examine the importance of fewer number of layers.

ULUSU, Funda; OZEL, Sultan Suleyman; Sarilmaz, Adem; ULUSU, Yakup
This pioneering study presents the synthesis and comprehensive evaluation of bare and metal-doped Ag₂S nanocrystals (NCs) as multifunctional agents with potential applications in antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer therapies. The incorporation of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and zinc into Ag₂S NCs resulted in a notable enhancement of their bioactivity, representing a novel approach in nanomaterial design. The antibacterial assessments revealed that Mn:Ag₂S NCs were the most potent candidate, exhibiting exceptional activity against S. aureus and E. coli, with the lowest MIC values recorded at 1.28 mg/mL and 1.08 mg/mL, respectively. The antioxidant studies demonstrated that the Mn:Ag₂S NCs exhibited remarkable free radical scavenging and ferric reducing capacities, with the lowest IC50 values (22.69 µg/mL for DPPH and 61.31 µg/mL for FRAP) underscoring their potential to mitigate oxidative stress. Importantly, cytotoxicity assays revealed that Ni:Ag₂S and Mn:Ag₂S nanocrystals selectively inhibited the proliferation of human colon cancer cells (HT-29), achieving IC50 values of 61.51 µg/mL and 90.12 µg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, these NCs demonstrate reduced toxicity towards mouse fibroblast cells (L929). This selective cytotoxicity indicates the potential of these agents in targeted cancer therapies, thereby reducing damage to healthy tissues. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically explore the synergistic effects of metal doping on the multifunctional properties of Ag₂S NCs. These findings provide a robust basis for further in vivo studies and offer new avenues for the development of safe and effective nanomaterials in biomedical applications, particularly as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer agents.
