- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on beliefs and practices regarding hand hygiene among intensive care nurses: A repeated cross-sectional study
Karadas, Yasemin Ay; Sahin, Sibel Yilmaz; Dönmez, Elif; Temiz, Gamze
Hand hygiene is an important factor in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. Studies show healthcare professionals' hand hygiene practices vary and are not at sufficient levels. This study aimed to examine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the beliefs and practices of nurses working in intensive care units (ICU) towards hand hygiene. This was longitudinal, repeated, and cross-sectional study. The study was conducted in 2 phases between January 2,2020 and March 10,2021 in the intensive care unit of a university hospital in northern Turkey. No sampling method was used. The objective was to reach the entire population. The first phase of this study was completed with 119 (76% of the population) ICU nurses and the second phase with 85 (70% of the population) ICU nurses. The data were collected with the personal information form, hand hygiene belief scale (HHBS), hand hygiene practices inventory (HHPI) and the views of the intensive care nurses related to COVID-19. Descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviations, frequency, and percentages and analytical statistics such as t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test were used for data analysis at the significance level of P < .05. The majority of the nurses who participated in the study were female (75.6%; 69.4%), with a mean age of 30.82 ± 5.51 and 30.58 ± 5.51 years, respectively. There was a significant difference (P < .05) between the median HHBS (P = .002) and HHPI (P = .001) scores before and after COVID-19. All nurses (100%) reported that the pandemic was effective in hand hygiene practices. In this study, it was determined that the hand hygiene beliefs and practices of nurses were high, and the scores of nurses' hand hygiene beliefs and practices after COVID-19 increased significantly. Healthcare professionals must always adhere to stringent standards of hand hygiene, rather than merely during periods of heightened challenges. To ensure the sustainability of optimal hand hygiene practices, it is recommended that motivational interventions that strengthen beliefs and practices related to hand hygiene should be implemented and that studies should be conducted to evaluate their effectiveness.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ3Unveiling the significance of Gremlin-1 as a novel biomarker for enhanced severity prediction in COVID-19 patients
Celik, Muhammet; Tekin, Erdal; Koçak, Mehmet Nuri; Uzunçakmak, Sevgi Karabulut; Bayraktar, Mustafa
Gremlin-1 is associated with lung disease and plays a role in the initiation and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. This suggests that Gremlin-1 may be associated with lung involvement in COVID-19 and poor clinical outcomes and warrants further investigation. This prospective, cross-sectional, single-blind study was the first to investigate Gremlin-1 levels in COVID-19 patients and whether Gremlin-1 levels could be used to predict and guide clinical follow-up in outpatients and inpatients. In this context, serum Gremlin-1 levels were measured and compared in 2 groups of patients who were diagnosed as positive for COVID-19 by RT-PCR and were followed up as outpatients (n = 28) or required hospitalization (n = 30). The median Gremlin-1 values were statistically significantly different between outpatients and intensive care unit patients (0.367 ng/mL [IQR = 0.377], 1.858 ng/mL [IQR = 2.245], respectively) (P < .0001). The area under the ROC curve value to determine the discriminative power of Gremlin-1 was found to be 0.772 (95% CI: 0.672-0.871; P < .0001), and the cutoff value of Gremlin-1 to discriminate between outpatients and hospitalized patients was found to be 1.242 ng/mL with 66.7% sensitivity and 67.2% specificity. Serum Gremlin-1 level is an important biomarker that can be used as a clinical decision-making tool for COVID-19 positive patients.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Analysis of telomere length in patients with COVID-19 and investigation into its relationship with clinical- demographic data
Savrun, Atakan; Dirican, Ebubekir
Purpose: Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease unknown before the 2019 outbreak in Wuhan. This study evaluated telomere length in COVID-19 (+) and (-) samples with clinical-demographic parameters.Materials and Methods: DNA was isolated from COVID-19 (+) (n=70) and (-) (n=70) patients. Telomere length was determined by real-time-PCR (RT-PCR). The 2- increment increment Ct method was used to analyze the telomere length of the samples. Results: There were significant differences in creatinine, LDH, ferritin, WBC, NEU and CRP in COVID-19 (+) patients compared to COVID-19 (-) patients. The NEU/LYM (or N/L) ratio was found higher in the patients with COVID-19 (+), than in COVID-19 (-). On the other hand, our COVID-19 (+) patients (mean +/- std:0.93 +/- 0.58) had significantly shorter telomere lengths than the COVID-19 (-) (mean +/- std:1.26 +/- 0.76). Moreover, COVID-19 (+) male patients (mean +/- std:1.06 +/- 0.50) had longer telomere length than female patients (mean +/- std:0.76 +/- 0.54). Telomere length was significantly shorter in patients with COVID-19 (+) with high blood urea nitrogen (BUN), high creatinine, high hematocrit, high NEU levels, normal platelets (PLT), and low WBC levels. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that telomere length and blood parameter levels influence the severity of COVID-19. Blood parameters differed in patients with COVID-19 (+) and COVID-19 (-). As a result, increasing the number of similar studies in the future can demonstrate the significance of our findings.

Karabulut Uzunçakmak, Sevgi; Aksakal, Alperen; Kerget, Ferhan; Aydın, Pelin; Halıcı, Zekai
Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate insulin-like growth factor binding protein 5 (IGFBP5) expression in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and its relationships with COVID-19 laboratory findings and plasma osteopontin (OPN) levels. Materials and methods: We enrolled 60 patients with COVID-19 and 30 healthy individuals in this study. mRNA expression of IGFBP5 was measured by RT-PCR. Plasma OPN levels were measured via the ELISA method. Results: Plasma OPN levels were higher and IGFBP5 expression levels were lower in COVID-19 patients than in the healthy individuals (p = 0.0057 and p = 0.0142, respectively). Critically ill patients had higher OPN and lower IGFBP5 than non-critically ill patients. Patients with affected lungs demonstrated increased OPN and decreased IGFBP5 (p = 0.00032 and p = 0.044, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis indicated that IGFBP5 expression and OPN levels can be used discriminate non-critically from critically ill patients (p = 0.049; p = 0.0016, respectively). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that patients with a poor prognosis had increased OPN and decreased IGFBP5. High values of OPN and low values of IGFBP5 may be considered as signs of disease severity. Tissue-specific IGFBP5 expression may contribute to understanding the role of IGFBP5 in the lungs in COVID-19 cases.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ4Initial Responses to COVID-19 Pandemic in Turkey: General, Financial, and Legal Measures
Göçoğlu, Volkan; Şengün, Hayriye
The COVID-19 pandemic started in Wuhan, China, and spread to almost all over the world in four months. As pandemic cases began to be detected and increased in countries, governments have started to pursue various policies such as closing the city and country borders, social distance practices, the prohibition of going out, and creating herd immunity. Especially with the closure measures implemented, the countries’ financial systems have been adversely affected, and many sectors have suffered losses. On the other hand, the provision of public services in countries has become more complex. Therefore, countries have taken several measures to maintain their public services without interruption. Legal services are one of the essential services affected by this situation. This study deals with the general, financial and legal measures that Turkey has adopted to combat against COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of the study, while the functional features that stand out in the measures are presented, some suggestions are made for a better crisis management.

Karabulut Uzuncakmak, S.; Dirican, E.; Naldan, M.E.; Kesmez Can, F.; Halıcı, Z.
Background: COVID-19 pandemic spread around the world like an infectious disease that presents waved effects on patients. Some patients needed ICU and respiratory support. Some patients only had flu-like symptoms. Cytokine storm and elevated ROS were serious problems for treatment. Apoptotic genes and CYP Family are part of these mechanisms. Aim: In this study, our aim was to examine the gene expression CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 in patients with COVID-19 infection. Method: 60 COVID-19(+) patients (ICU and non-ICU patients) and 30 healthy volunteers were enrolled to study. To measure the level of gene expression qPCR was used. The 2-ΔΔCt method was utilized to analyze gene expression. Results: The expression of CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 genes showed a significant discrepancy between patients and healthy individuals. Caspase-3 expression increased (p=0,0041) but CYP2E1 expression decreased (p=0,0214) in COVID-19 patients compared to healthy individuals. Both levels of gene expression were lower in patients with affected lungs than patients with unaffected lungs (p<0,05). Laboratory findings including d-Dimer, LDH, platelet count, lymphocyte count were related to both gene expressions (p<0,05). We found no correlation between CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 expressions. Conclusion: The expression of Caspase-3 demonstrated apoptotic situations of patients but was not related to the CYP2E1 expression level. CYP2E1 gene expression is an important actor to metabolize endogens and xenobiotics however, COVID-19 patients demonstrated decreased CYP2E1 expression. CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 gene expression levels may be used as a diagnostic tool for COVID-19 patients.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ2Preliminary investigation of gene expression levels of PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α in SARS-Cov-2 infected patients
Karabulut Uzunçakmak, Sevgi; Naldan, Muhammet Emin; Dirican, Ebubekir; Kerget, Ferhan; Halıcı, Zekai
Background: Coronavirus-19 is still considered a pandemic that influences the world. Other molecular alterations should be clearer besides the increasing cytokine storm and pro-inflammatory molecules. Hypoxic conditions that induce HIF-1α lead to stimulate gene expression of STC-2 that targets PAPP-A expression. This study aimed to determine gene expression levels of PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α in COVID-19 infection. We also aimed to reveal the relationship of these genes with laboratory and clinical data of COVID-19 patients. Materials and Results: We extracted RNA from peripheral blood samples of COVID-19(+) and COVID-19(−) individuals. The real-time PCR method was used to measure mRNA expression of PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α. Gene expression analysis was evaluated by the 2−ΔΔCt method. PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α mRNA expressions of severe patients were higher than healthy individuals (p = 0.0451, p = 0.4466, p < 0.0001, respectively). Correlation analysis of gene expression patterns of severe patients demonstrated a positive correlation between PAPP-A and STC-2 (p < 0.0001, r = 0.8638). Conclusion: This is the first study that investigates the relation of PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α gene expression in patients with COVID-19 infection. Besides the routine laboratory findings, PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α mRNA expressions may be considered to patients’ prognosis as a sign of increased cytokines and pro-inflammatory molecules.

Dirican, Ebubekir; Savrun, Şeyda Tuba; Aydın, İsmail Erkan; Gülbay, Gonca; Karaman, Ülkü
Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Mutations of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are becoming increasingly common in various diseases. This study aims to investigate mutations in the cytochrome-b (CYB) and adenosine triphosphatase-6 (ATPase-6) genes of mtDNA in COVID-19 patients. The association between mtDNA mutations and clinical outcomes is investigated here. In the present study, mutations of the mtDNA genes CYB and ATPase-6 were investigated in COVID-19 (+) (n = 65) and COVID-19 (−) patients (n = 65). First, we isolated DNA from the blood samples. After the PCR analyses, the mutations were defined using Sanger DNA sequencing. The age, creatinine, ferritin, and CRP levels of the COVID 19 (+) patients were higher than those of the COVID-19 (−) patients (p = 0.0036, p = 0.0383, p = 0.0305, p < 0.0001, respectively). We also found 16 different mutations in the CYB gene and 14 different mutations in the ATPase-6 gene. The incidences of CYB gene mutations A15326G, T15454C, and C15452A were higher in COVID-19 (+) patients than COVID-19 (−) patients; p < 0.0001: OR (95% CI): 4.966 (2.215−10.89), p = 0.0226, and p = 0.0226, respectively. In contrast, the incidences of A8860G and G9055A ATPase-6 gene mutations were higher in COVID-19 (+) patients than COVID-19 (−) patients; p < 0.0001: OR (95%CI): 5.333 (2.359−12.16) and p = 0.0121 respectively. Yet, no significant relationship was found between mtDNA mutations and patients' age and biochemical parameters (p > 0.05). The results showed that the frequency of mtDNA mutations in COVID-19 patients is quite high and it is important to investigate the association of these mutations with other genetic mechanisms in larger patient populations.

Uzunçakmak, Sevgi Karabulut
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is a virus that can still infect individuals and whose deadly effects continue despite the current vaccines and drugs. Since 2019, many studies on the pathogenesis of the disease have been completed and continue to be done. In addition to the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, many molecules that can be markers of the disease have been investigated. In the early stages of the pandemic, many nonspecific and infection-related laboratory findings and chest computed tomography were used to obtain information about the diagnosis of the disease. The more individual molecules became associated with the disease yet. The purpose of this review is to summarize the impact and role of many molecules associated with coronavirus disease-2019 infection that have been previously used and newly revealed. Numerous studies are summarized in this review. The obtained data show that previously used laboratory findings and new potential biomarkers are not specific to the disease. New potential biomark-ers have been associated with the severity of the disease itself, as can be seen with lung imaging and even with routine laboratory findings. One of the important points that are seen frequently in studies is that the effectiveness of these molecules has been shown not only in coronavirus disease-2019 infection but also in many other diseases. This removes the pathogenesis of the disease from being a unique mechanism created by the Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and provides a general perspective formed by viral or bacterial infections. However, there are still many molecular changes that need to be investigated. Future studies will continue to update themselves with the mutations of the virus.

Objective: In the present study, the relationship between a poor prognosis and adropin levels in diabetic patients with coronavirus disease 2019 was investigated by measuring serum adropin levels and levels of D-dimer, C-reactive protein, and ferritin, which are considered prognostic factors for coronavirus disease 2019. Materials and Methods: Hundred volunteer participants treated in the Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital were included in this study. Serum adropin levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relationship between serum adropin level and C-reactive protein, ferritin, and D-dimer levels was analyzed by correlation analysis. Results: The participants’ serum adropin levels differed between the groups (P =.0007). The control group had the highest adropin levels among groups. The lowest adropin levels were in the COVID + diabetes mellitus group. Adropin levels of diabetes mellitus, COVID, and diabetes mellitus + COVID groups were significantly decreased when compared to the control (P <.05). There was a significant negative correlation between adropin and C-reactive protein, D-dimer, and ferritin. Conclusion: Adropin can be used as an auxiliary biomarker, a prognostic factor in the early management of coronavirus disease 2019 patients with diabetes mellitus. We think that our study will guide future studies conducted in this field.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ3The Importance of Nutrition and a Balanced Diet in the Elderly during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Esgin, Özge; Erten, Tayyibe
Background: Age is an important risk factor for the mortality rate in the COVID-19 disease, and mostly, hospitalised patients over 60 years with chronic diseases are at high risk of death due to this disease. Along with preventive measures, proper nutrient intake might be helpful in maintaining a healthy state or reduce the severity of the COVID-19 disease in the elderly. Methods: The search was carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, Medline, Google Scholar and Web of Science using the following terms: COVID-19, coronavirus, elderly, elderly nutrition. Results: The requirement for some macro and micronutrients, especially the nutrients that support the immune activity, increases in this disease. During the pandemic, the daily energy requirement for the elderly is 27-30 kcal/kg, while the protein intake is at least 1g/kg, and the ratio of fat and carbohydrate is 30:70 or less than 50:50. The daily intake of vitamin A, B6, B12, C, D, zinc and selenium can also be increased due to their supporting function in the immune system. Probiotics include Bifidobacterium longum MM-2, Lactobacillus plantarum 06CC2, Lactobacillus bulgaricus OLL1073R-1 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus M21, and the consumption of prebiotics in diet enhances the immune function. Additionally, flavonoids, such as baicalin, epigallocatechin gallate, gallocatechin gallate, kaempferol, luteolin, resveratrol and quercetin, improve immunity by reducing oxidative stress in the elderly. Conclusion: Adequate and balanced nutrition diet should be applied during the pandemic; in addition to this, micronutrient deficiencies should also be overcome in the elderly at every stage of life. Nuron&The novel coronavirus, called SARS-CoV2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus-2), emerged at the end of 2019 in China and was announced as a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on March 11th, 2020 [1]. It has spread more rapidly than previous coronavirus outbreaks, such as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus); thus, it has affected most countries [2, 3]. By August 2021, WHO reported globally 206.958.371 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 4.357.179 deaths [4]. Since SARS-CoV-2 enters the cells through angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), it binds to the ACE2 membrane of alveolar epithelial cells and attacks firstly the respiratory system [5].

Dirican, Ebubekir; Aydin, Ismail Erkan; Savrun, Seyda
Purpose: Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV2). The angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) can play a vital role in regulating the pathological changes of various diseases, including COVID-19. The aim of this study was to analyze the expression of the ACE2 gene in Turkish COVID-19 patients. Materials and Methods: Eighty COVID-19 PCR test positive patients and 80 PCR test negative healthy volunteers were included in the study. RNA isolation was carried out from all samples. The RT-PCR device was used to analyze the expression of the ACE2 gene. Results: A significant difference was found in the age, Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ferritin and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels of the COVID-19 patients compared to the healthy volunteers. Based on the gene expression results, it was found that ACE2 gene expression was significantly higher in COVID-19 patients compared to healthy volunteers. In patients with COVID-19, a significant difference was found between the expression of the ACE2 gene and the levels of Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), Hemoglobin (HGB), Hematocrit (HCT) and CRP. Conclusion: ACE2 gene expression was high in the COVID-19 patients and showed differences based on clinical data. Thus, the expression of ACE2 can have paradoxical effects that support the pathogenicity of SARSCoV2 but, conversely, limit viral infection. The availability of ACE2 receptors may increase the susceptibility and / or disease course of COVID-19.

Aim: It is to determine relationship between anxiety levels and exercise addiction of higher school students studying in field of sports sciences during Covid-19 pandemic period. Methods: 184 students participated in the study. Gender, age, educational class, having regular exercise and exercise periods were learned as demographical information. In order to determine anxiety and exercise addiction levels of students, Corona virus anxiety scale and Exercise addiction scale survey were applied. In the analysis of study SPSS-24 statistical packet program was used. Results: When demographic information of students are reviewed, it is seen that gender of 51.1% of them was male and gender of 48.9% of them were female. It was determined that 44% of students were at the age of 22. 28.3% of educational class was 2nd class. While 62.5% of students did regular exercise and active sports, 37.5% of them did not deal with these. While 38% of those doing regular and active sports did not do exercises, 4.3% of them did regular exercise and active sports. When coronavirus anxiety scale applied to students is examined, it is seen that gender had impact of diziness, dullness, lose of appetite, and nausea and that situation of doing regular exercises and active sports had impact on lack of appetite and nausea. When exercise addiction scale applied to students is examined, it is seen that doing regular exercise and active sports and its period had impact on hyper focus and mood swings. When relationship between coronavirus anxiety and exercise addiction levels of students are reviewed, it was seen that postponement of individual social needs and conflict had negative impacts on the person's anxiety level, drowsiness, loss of appetite, and nausea. Conclusion: When coronavirus anxiety levels and exercise addiction of students during Covid-19 pandemic period are examined, the process they are in have had various negative impacts on the students. Gender of students studying in the field of sports sciences affects their anxiety status. At the same time, regular exercise students do and its period plays a role in relation to focusing and emotional changes.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Clustering framework to cope with COVID-19 for cities in Turkey
Guleryuz, Didem; Ozden, Erdemalp
Introduction: This article is the product of the research Clustering Framework to Cope with COVID-19 for Cities in Turkey, developed at Bayburt University in 2021. Problem: Turkey's risk map, presented in January 2021, to take local decisions in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, was based on confirmed cases only. Health, socio-economic and environmental indicators are also important for management decisions of COVID-19. The risk map to be designed by adding these indicators will support more effective decisions. Objective: The research aims to propose a clustering scheme to design a risk map of cities for Turkey. Methodology: The unsupervised clustering algorithm suggested dividing the cities of Turkey into clusters, considering health, socio-economic, environmental indicators, and the spread pattern of COVID-19. Results: We found that cities are clustered into five groups while megacity Istanbul alone formed a cluster, three of Turkey's largest cities formed another cluster. Other clusters consist of 19, 26, and 32 cities, respectively. The most important determinants which have predictive power are identified. Conclusion: The suggested clustering method can be a decision support system for policymakers to determine the differences and similarities of cities in quarantine decisions and normalization phases for the following periods of the pandemic. Originality: To the best of our knowledge, this study differs from previous studies because countries were grouped in previous studies by only considering the confirmed cases. In this study, cities were clustered in terms of the health, socio-economic, and environmental indicators to make decisions locally. Limitations: The distribution of confirmed cases by age could be added, especially to make decisions about education, but this data is not officially announced.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Does compliance with the preventive health behaviours against COVID-19 mitigate the effects of depression, anxiety and stress? (¿Cumplir con los comportamientos preventivos de salud contra el COVID-19 reduce los efectos de la depresión, la ansiedad y el estrés?)
Aydin, Fatih; Kaya, Feridun
In the present study, the aim was to investigate the associations between compliance with preventive health behaviours, depression, anxiety and stress. 478 adults living in Turkey voluntarily filled out the online survey, which comprised demographic questions, Measure of Compliance with Preventive Health Behaviours against COVID-19, and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales, between 24–31 March 2020: during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey. Results revealed that compliance with preventive health behaviours has negative associations with depression, anxiety and stress. Adults’ compliance with the recommended preventive health behaviours accounted for 14% variance in depression, 9% variance in anxiety and 10% variance in stress. The evidence might indicate that compliance with preventive health behaviours may protect people psychologically against the burden created by the novel COVID-19 pandemic.

Saatchian, Vahid; Azimkhani, Amin; Türkmen, Mutlu; Laein, Dorri Dolatkhah
In addition to the environmental problems that have plagued human life in recent decades, the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic has endangered people's health and adversely affected their lives in other ways. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the advantage of using shared bicycles (SB) during the outbreak of epidemics. For this purpose, 310 male subscribers of an SB system were examined. The research tool was a questionnaire taken from studies. The results showed that the environmental and health advantages were favourable, but the place advantage indicated a relatively unfavourable situation. The results of the structural equation model also showed that the advantages of using an SB based on the highest impact are the motivational advantage, health advantage, environmental advantage, social advantage, financial advantage and place advantage. These results can provide useful solutions for governments to reduce environmental risks and maintain health and physical activity during epidemics.
