This study provides a comprehensive phytochemical, elemental, and spectroscopic characterization of 26 species belonging to the Asteraceae family, several of which are endemic to T & uuml;rkiye and traditionally used in folk medicine. Qualitative screening revealed the widespread presence of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and carbohydrates, while alkaloids and anthracene heterosides were entirely absent in all taxa. Among the species analyzed, Cichorium intybus, Cyanus depressus, Achillea arabica, and Cirsium davisianum exhibited the richest phytochemical diversity, suggesting strong biological potential. Quantitative evaluation showed that Klasea serratuloides possessed the highest total phenolic content (99.49 mu g GAE/mg extract), followed by Artemisia scoparia and Inula sarana, indicating notable antioxidant potential. Elemental analysis by ICP-MS demonstrated significant interspecies variation, with Centaurea armena, Centaurea arvensis, and Cichorium intybus containing elevated levels of essential macro- and trace elements such as K, Mg, Ca, Zn, and Se, whereas Helichrysum plicatum and Scorzonera ulrichii showed high Co and Se contents. Conversely, trace levels of potentially toxic elements (e.g., Al, U) were detected in some taxa, emphasizing the need for careful evaluation of their pharmacological use. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups characteristic of phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, and cardioactive heterosides, as indicated by distinct O-H (3200-3600 cm-1), C-H (2850-2950 cm-1), and C=O (1700-1650 cm-1) stretching bands. The combined interpretation of phytochemical and FTIR data underscores the chemical diversity and functional group complexity of these plant extracts. Overall, the results highlight the nutritional and pharmacognostic significance of several Asteraceae species, supporting their potential application in antioxidant, nutraceutical, and therapeutic formulations.

The association of psychological need dissatisfaction with problematic digital gaming: Mediating roles of EPOCH well-being and resilience in adolescents

Yayla, Ibrahim Erdogan; Makas, Samet; Gomez-Salgado, Juan; Bayrakci, Cansu; Dombak, Kubra; Çelik, Eyup; Yildirim, Murat

Drawing on self-determination theory, this study examines how EPOCH well-being and resilience mediate the relationship between dissatisfaction with psychological needs and problematic digital gaming. Data were collected via questionnaires from 647 adolescents aged 13-19 (M = 15.80, SD = 1.10), 55.8% of whom were girls, using a convenience sampling method. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. Results indicate a significant positive association between dissatisfaction with psychological needs and problematic digital gaming. Moreover, both EPOCH well-being and resilience were found to mediate this relationship. By highlighting the role of psychological resources in adolescence, this study makes novel theoretical and practical contributions to understanding the associations between psychological need dissatisfaction and problematic digital gaming. This is a cross-sectional study, which limits the generalization of the research results. The participants are adolescents attending middle schools in some rural areas of T & uuml;rkiye, which limits the generalizability of the research results to adolescents in other parts of T & uuml;rkiye and the world. Additionally, research data were obtained through self-report scales. This may lead adolescents to respond in line with their developmental perceptions of social desirability.

Nartop, Dilek; Ögütcü, Hatice; Özkan, Elvan Hasanoglu; Yetim, Nurdan Kurnaz; Kizil, Hamit Emre; Ekincioglu, Yavuz

Novel heteroaromatic compounds (Hc1, Hc2, Hc3, Hc4) were obtained, and their structure were confirmed using various spectroscopic methods, including elemental analysis, fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (1H/13C-NMR) spectroscopy, and molar conductance measurement. The biological activities of the heteroaromatic compounds against several Gram-positive (Micrococcus luteus ATCC9341, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC12228, Bacillus cereus RSKK863, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111), and Gram-negative bacterial strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853, Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC27853, Enterobacter aerogenes ATCC51342, Salmonella typhi H NCTC9018394, Shigella dysenteriae NCTC2966, Proteus vulgaris RSKK96026) were evaluated using the well-diffusion method. In general, the heteroaromatic compounds demonstrated a stronger inhibitory effect against Gram-positive bacteria. Hc1, Hc2 and Hc3 showed the highest inhibitory effect against B. cereus and L. monocytogenes. The compound (Hc4) showed the highest antibacterial activity and antifungal activity against Bacillus cereus and C. albicans, respectively. The cytotoxic activity of the heteroaromatic compounds was assessed against the non-small cell lung cancer cell line (NCI-H460) using the NutriCulture Cell Viability Detection Kit-8 (CVDK-8). Among the synthesized heteroaromatic compounds, Hc3 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity with an IC50 value of 141.3 & micro;g/mL, whereas compounds Hc1, Hc2, and Hc4 did not display significant toxicity at the tested concentrations. The molecular geometry of the heteroaromatic compound (Hc3) was optimized using Gaussian 09 W at the B3LYP/6-311++G (d,p) level of theory. Key structural parameters such as bond lengths, bond angles, and dihedral angles were determined through the same computational framework. Electronic features, including frontier molecular orbitals, global reactivity descriptors, and molecular electrostatic potential surfaces, were analyzed to explore intramolecular charge distribution and predict reactive sites. To evaluate the biological potential of the heteroaromatic compound (Hc3), molecular docking studies were performed. Additionally, drug-likeness assessment based on Lipinski's Rule of Five and ADME profiling revealed favorable pharmacokinetic characteristics. Molecular docking studies revealed that compound Hc3 showed a binding energy of -4.09 kcal/mol against the EGFR target (PDB ID: 1UWH), exhibiting key interactions such as hydrogen bonding and It-interactions with the active site residues. Based on all the results, it can be said that new heteroaromatic compounds have significant potential in the pharmaceutical field.

Energy, exergy and economic optimization application of integrated dual-loop organic rankine cycle: A case of shopping mall power plant

Topcu, Muhammed Taha; Tozlu, Alperen; Bilen, Kadir

This paper presents a thermoeconomic analysis of the Dual-Loop Organic Rankine Cycle (DORC) integrated into the Erzurum Mall Power Plant (EMPP). The DORC system is designed to utilize waste heat at 425 degrees C and 9 kg/s, producing additional power for the existing plant. The integration of dual-loop ORC systems with different critical temperature fluids into an operational facility is analyzed. High-temperature cycles use working fluids such as Toluene, MDM (octamethylcyclotrisiloxane), n-Nonane, and n-Octane, while refrigerants R236fa, R600a, and R124 are employed in the low-temperature cycles. The designed model demonstrates that up to 11.4 % of the plant's existing capacity can be added as extra power. The Toluene/R600a combination is identified as the best fluid pair, delivering the highest total net power output (653.4 kW), the lowest total cost rate (19.18 $/h), and the highest exergy efficiency (20.18 %). Optimization of the DORC system is performed using the NSGA-II in MATLAB. For the toluene/R600a pair, the optimization results show an increase of 13.52 % in the net power output and decrease of 1.48 % in the total cost rate, which is a significant improvement over the initial results.

High Pressure Homogenization (HPH) is emerging as a cutting-edge, non-thermal technology for liquid food preservation, offering significant advantages over conventional methods. Recent advances in HPH technology, particularly with the development of robust valves capable of withstanding pressures of 350-400 MPa, have opened new possibilities for the food industry. HPH not only extends the shelf life of liquid foods but also preserves nutritional value, improves homogeneity, reduces energy consumption, and minimizes the need for chemical preservatives. Its ability to inactivate microorganisms and enzymes while modifying bioactive components is particularly valuable for enhancing food safety and nutritional quality. Novel aspects of HPH include its efficiency in microbial and enzyme inactivation through cellular disruption, demonstrated in both lab and industrial settings, as well as its capacity to alter the functional properties of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. This results in improved stability, viscosity, and shelf life of various products. The versatility of HPH enables the development of novel food formulations that meet evolving consumer demands for safer, more nutritious options. This review critically examines the literature on HPH's application in liquid foods, focusing on its impact on enzymatic activity and bioactive components, while highlighting the parameters that influence microbial inactivation during HPH processing. The ongoing technological advancements in HPH present a promising future for revolutionizing food preservation practices.

Individual and interactive effect of ultrasound pre-treatment on drying kinetics and biochemical qualities of food: A critical review

Pandiselvam, R.; Aydar, Alev Yuksel; Kutlu, Naciye; Aslam, Raouf; Sahni, Prashant; Mitharwal, Swati; Gavahian, Mohsen; Kumar, Manoj; Raposo, Antonio; Yoo, Sunghoon

One of the earliest and most prevalent processing methods to increase the shelf-life of foods is drying. In recent years, there has been an increased demand to improve product quality while lowering processing times, ex-penses, and energy usage in the drying process. Pre-treatments are therefore effectively used before drying to enhance heat and mass transfer, increase drying efficiency, and lessen degradation of final product quality. When food is dried, changes are expected in its taste, color, texture, and physical, chemical, and microbial properties. This has led to the need for research and development into the creation of new and effective pre-treatment technologies including high-pressure processing, pulsed electric field, ultraviolet irradiation, and ultrasound. Sound waves that have a frequency >20 kHz, which is above the upper limit of the audible frequency range, are referred to as ultrasound. Ultrasonication (US) is a non-thermal technology, that has mechanical, cavitational, and sponge effects on food materials. Ultrasound pre-treatment enhances the drying characteristics by producing microchannels in the food tissue, facilitating internal moisture diffusion in the finished product, and lowering the barrier to water migration. The goal of ultrasound pre-treatment is to save processing time, conserve energy, and enhance the quality, safety, and shelf-life of food products. This study presents a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of ultrasound, its mechanism, and how the individual effects of ultrasonic pre-treatment and the interactive effects of ultrasound-assisted technologies affect the drying kinetics, bioactive components, color, textural, and sensory qualities of food. The difficulties that can arise when using ultrasound technology as a drying pretreatment approach, such as inadequate management of heat, the employment of ultrasound at a limited frequency, and the generation of free radicals, have also been explained.

Phenolic and free amino acid profiles of bee bread and bee pollen with the same botanical origin - similarities and differences

Bayram, Nesrin Ecem; Gercek, Yusuf Can; Çelik, Saffet; Mayda, Nazli; Kostic, Aleksandar Z.; Dramicanin, Aleksandra M.; Özkök, Asli

In this study, the chemical profile of bee pollen (BP) and bee bread (BB) samples collected from the same beehive were analyzed by LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography technique coupled with tandem mass spectrometry), providing the identification of 23 phenolic compounds and 42 free amino acids (FAAs). Rutin was the phenolic compound with the highest rate of occurrence in both BP and BB samples. However, concentrations of protocatechuic acid, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid and kaempferol compounds were significantly higher in BB samples than in BP samples from the same hive probably as result of microbial activity and glycosides degradation. The obtained data revealed that the phenolic profiles of the samples differ not only by the type of a product but also by region. Among FAAs proline was the predominant compound in all the analyzed BP and BB samples followed by L-asparagine (BP samples) and L-aspartic acid (BP and BB samples). A high content of proline can be used as a parameter of sample freshness. Also, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster analysis proved the possibility of using phlorizin as a chemotaxonomic marker for Rosaceae (Malus or Prunus genus) pollen presence in BP1 sample. In addition, amino acid profile had higher impact on BP and BB sample differentiation due to lower FAAs content in BB samples probably caused by microbial activity. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to compare the individual phenolic compounds and free amino acids of bee pollen and bee bread samples with the same botanical origin (predominantly originated from plants belonging to the following families: Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Plantaginaceae and Rosaceae). Butter production from ozone-treated cream: Effects on characteristics of physicochemical, microbiological, thermal and oxidative stability

Sert, Durmus; Mercan, Emin; Kara, Ummugulsum

The goal of this research was to investigate the effects of the ozone treatment (OT) to raw cream on the physicochemical, microbiological, thermal, and oxidative properties of butter. For this purpose, butter samples were produced from raw cream, which was ozone-treated for 5 (OT-5), 15 (OT-15), 30 (OT-30), and 60 (OT-60) min. The control sample was also produced from non-ozonated raw cream. OT increased firmness, consistency, and fat particle size values of cream. The firmness of butter was between 97 and 380 N. Average fat particle size of samples (D[3.2]) ranged from 22.1 to 30.2 mu m, in which OT decreased it. A monomodal fat particle size distribution was determined in all-butter samples. OT decreased b value (yellowness) of butter, and the lowest value was determined in OT-60. The induction time of butter changed from 1.04 (OT-60) - 32.9 h (control). Two melting peaks were determined in butter samples at 14.2-14.6 and 32.3-33 degrees C. Ozonation for 60 min caused 2.01 log reduction in Staphylococci. Above 15 min, OT completely inactivated Salmonella and yeast-mould. Coliform was not detected in OT-30 and OT-60. The results showed that OT resulted in higher microbiological quality in butter from raw cream.

Waste utilization: The removal of textile dye (Bomaplex Red CR-L) from aqueous solution on sludge waste from electrocoagulation as adsorbent

Yilmaz, Alper Erdem; Boncukcuoglu, Recep; Kocakerim, Muhtar; Karakas, Ibrahim Hakki

The potential of removing Bomaplex Red CR-L dye from electro coagulation sludge has been investigated for different Bomaplex Red CR-L concentrations with varying adsorbent amount, temperature, pH and stirrer speed. Removal of Bomaplex Red CR-L is found to be high at lower pH values. The maximum adsorption of the dye has been achieved in aqueous solutions using 0.5g of calcinated sludge from electro coagulation at a pH of 2.0 within 20min. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were tested and it was found that the Langmuir equation was fitted better than the Freundlich equation. Maximum adsorption capacity (q m) was calculated as 192.31mg g -1 at 333K. In addition, the adsorption data obtained at various temperatures were successfully applied to pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. The rates of adsorption were found to conform to pseudo second-order kinetics with good correlation (R 2≥0.9997). This study showed that calcinated the sludge from electrocoagulation has a highly adsorbent capacity.

Thermodynamics and kinetic studies of biosorption of a basic dye from aqueous solution using green algae Ulothrix sp.

Doǧar, Çetin; Gürses, Ahmet; Açikyildiz, Metin; Özkan, Esra

This study addresses removal of a basic dye, methylene blue, from aqueous solutions by using dried Ulothrix sp. biomass as biosorbent. The effects of the initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature, solution equilibrium pH, biosorbent dosage, and mixing rate on biosorption of the dye have been investigated. It was found that 30 min is sufficient in order to reach adsorption equilibrium. The amount of methylene blue adsorbed onto Ulothrix sp. increased with increasing equilibrium pH and mixing rate, in contrary, it decreased with increasing temperature and sorbent dosage. The process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isosteric enthalpy and entropy values were calculated as -11.8 kJ/mol and 37.5 J/(mol K), respectively. In addition, the results suggest that the physical interactions between sorbent particles and sorbate ions play an important role for the adsorption of methylene blue onto the biosorbent.
