Unveiling the significance of Gremlin-1 as a novel biomarker for enhanced severity prediction in COVID-19 patients

Celik, Muhammet; Tekin, Erdal; Koçak, Mehmet Nuri; Uzunçakmak, Sevgi Karabulut; Bayraktar, Mustafa

Gremlin-1 is associated with lung disease and plays a role in the initiation and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. This suggests that Gremlin-1 may be associated with lung involvement in COVID-19 and poor clinical outcomes and warrants further investigation. This prospective, cross-sectional, single-blind study was the first to investigate Gremlin-1 levels in COVID-19 patients and whether Gremlin-1 levels could be used to predict and guide clinical follow-up in outpatients and inpatients. In this context, serum Gremlin-1 levels were measured and compared in 2 groups of patients who were diagnosed as positive for COVID-19 by RT-PCR and were followed up as outpatients (n = 28) or required hospitalization (n = 30). The median Gremlin-1 values were statistically significantly different between outpatients and intensive care unit patients (0.367 ng/mL [IQR = 0.377], 1.858 ng/mL [IQR = 2.245], respectively) (P < .0001). The area under the ROC curve value to determine the discriminative power of Gremlin-1 was found to be 0.772 (95% CI: 0.672-0.871; P < .0001), and the cutoff value of Gremlin-1 to discriminate between outpatients and hospitalized patients was found to be 1.242 ng/mL with 66.7% sensitivity and 67.2% specificity. Serum Gremlin-1 level is an important biomarker that can be used as a clinical decision-making tool for COVID-19 positive patients.

Thermal and energy analysis of a novel solar updraft tower design with divergent chimney and convergent collector concept: CFD analysis with experimental validation

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Saxena, Abhishek; Cuce, Erdem; Kontoleon, Karolos J.; Oztekin, Erman K.; Shaik, Saboor; Guo, Shaopeng

The fact that energy sources are heavily dependent on fossil fuels increases the need for alternative energy day by day. Solar energy is the most popular alternative energy source with massive potential. Solar chimney power plants (SCPP) are one of the systems of interest based on solar energy. SCPP systems are rare systems that can provide 24-hour power output. Their performance has been the subject of constant research since the first pilot plant in Manzanares. Design is crucial for performance figures of SCPPs, and the limitation of climatic parameters causes the system to be approached with different designs. This study makes a 3D CFD model by combining the divergent chimney and convergent collector structure based on the first pilot plant. The solar ray tracing algorithm and the RNG k-e turbulence model are applied and the model equations are solved under dynamic conditions with the reliable software ANSYS FLUENT. After the mesh-independent solution of the model is complete, it is validated with experimental data. The two cases are compared for solar radiation of 1000 W/m2 and environmental temperature of 293 K. A power output of 50.51 kW is achieved for standard pilot sizing. With the new model, the power output rises to 146.34 kW. It is seen that the divergent chimney and convergent collector affect the airflow in the system, increasing the maximum air velocity to 19.363 m/s. In parallel with the experimental data, it is seen that the temperature on the ground exceeds 360 K in the CFD results.

A dual-acting aldose reductase inhibitor impedes oxidative and carbonyl stress in tissues of fructose- and streptozotocin-induced rats: comparison with antioxidant stobadine

Kaya, Alican; Ceylan, Aslı F.; Kavutcu, Mustafa; Santamaria, Abel; Šoltésová Prnová, Marta; Stefek, Milan; Karasu, Çimen

Inhibiting aldose reductase (ALR2, AR) as well as maintaining a concomitant antioxidant (AO) activity via dual-acting agents may be a rational approach to prevent cellular glucotoxicity and at least delay the progression of diabetes mellitus (DM). This study was aimed at evaluating the dual-acting AR inhibitor (ARI) cemtirestat (CMTI) on tissue oxidative stress (OS) and carbonyl stress (CS) biomarkers in rats exposed to fructose alone (F) or fructose plus streptozotocin (D; type-2 diabetic). D and F rats were either untreated or treated daily with low- or high-dose CMTI, ARI drug epalrestat (EPA) or antioxidant stobadine (STB) for 14 weeks. Malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione S-transferase (GST), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), and catalase (CAT) were increased in the sciatic nerve of F and D. These increases were attenuated by low doses of CMTI and STB in D, but exacerbated by low-dose EPA and high-dose CMTI in F. STB and CMTI and to a lesser extent EPA improved MDA, protein-carbonyl, GST and CAT in the hearts and lungs of F and D. CMTI and STB were more effective than EPA in improving the increased MDA and protein-carbonyl levels in the kidneys of F and especially D. CMTI ameliorated renal GST inhibition in D. In the lungs, hearts, and kidneys of F and D, the GSH to GSSG ratio decreased and caspase-3 activity increased, but partially resolved with treatments. In conclusion, CMTI with ARI/AO activity may be advantageous in overcoming OS, CS, and their undesirable consequences, with low dose efficacy and limited toxicity, compared to ARI or antioxidant alone.

The aroma profile of butter produceusing different starter cultures; [Aromatski profil maslaca proizvedenih korištenjem različitih starter kultura]

Şengül, Mustafa; Akgül, Halil İbrahim; Ürkek, Bayram

The aroma of fermented dairy products is greatly influenced by starter cultures and by the lactic acid bacteria strains that are used as starter cultures. Experimental butter samples were produced using no starter culture, by a commercial starter culture (Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis, Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides), by a prepared bacteria mix (Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis EM1, Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris EM28, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis G49, Leuconostoc mesenteroides B3), and by a prepared bacteria mix fortified with Lactobacillus rhamnosus B19 (L. rhamnosus B19). The aroma profile of the butter samples was investigated using a gas chromatography mass spectometry method (GC-MS). A total of 92 components were determined in the butter samples, including acids (12), alcohols (20), aldehydes (9), alkanes (6), esters (8), ketones (19) and several other aroma compounds (18). The sample containing the prepared starter culture had the most detectable aroma components, while the lowest number of aromatic components were found in the sample without a starter culture. 2,3-butanedione (diacetyl) was not detected in the sample without a starter culture. 2-Butanone 3-hydroxy-(acetoin) content was the highest in the sample containing the commercial starter culture and the lowest in the sample without a starter culture.

Determinants of Ecological Footprint: A Quantile Regression Approach

    Özcan, Kübra Akyol

Through the examination of the ecological consequences of human actions, policymakers are able to distinguish certain areas in which resource use can be increased and the generation of waste diminished. This study examines the effects of foreign direct investment, gross domestic product, industrialization, renewable energy consumption, and urban population on the ecological footprints in 131 countries between 1997 and 2020. The objective of this study is to establish a thorough understanding of the relationship between these variables and ecological footprints while considering temporal changes from economic and environmental aspects. The analysis of a substantial dataset encompassing many countries aims to uncover recurring patterns and trends that can provide valuable information for the formulation of policies and strategies pertaining to sustainable development on a global level. The study fills a significant gap in the knowledge on the ecological impact of different variables, providing a nuanced understanding of the interdependencies among these factors, thus guiding sustainable development strategies, and promoting global sustainability. The study utilizes quantile regression analysis, a nonparametric estimator, to estimate consistent coefficients. The statistical analysis reveals that FDI, urbanization, and GDP have statistically significant and positive effects on ecological footprints. Industrialization and renewable energy consumption show significant and negative relationships with ecological footprints. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the relationships among these variables and provide insight to inform policy and decision-making efforts focused on reducing ecological consequences and advancing sustainable development goals.

Implementation of Active and Passive Vibration Control of Flexible Smart Composite Manipulators with Genetic Algorithm

    Uyar, M.; Malgaca, L.

Endpoint vibrations of flexible manipulators (FM) are suppressed using active or passive control techniques. Suppressing vibrations increases the dynamic performance of the FM in engineering applications. In this study, a model extraction approach is proposed for vibration suppression of single-link flexible smart and composite manipulators. Active and passive control (APC) of residual vibrations is studied theoretically and experimentally. The smart manipulator consists of patching a piezoelectric (PZT) actuator to an aluminum and composite link. The finite element (FE) model of smart manipulators, including revolute joint and PZT actuator, is created in ANSYS. The motion profile and actuator voltage are the inputs, the tip displacement is the output. Then, the state-space (SS) mathematical models of the smart manipulators are extracted from the FE models by using the inputs and outputs. The open-loop and closed-loop simulations are performed using the extracted mathematical models in MATLAB. Passive control is achieved by the motion profiles, while active control is achieved by the PZT actuators. The PD controller with the displacement feedback is used to create the actuation voltages. For the optimized APC, the PD gains are optimized with a genetic algorithm by using the integral of the squared error and integral of absolute magnitude of the error fitness functions. Residual vibrations of smart manipulators are successfully reduced by the optimized APC. To verify the simulation results, open-loop and closed-loop experiments are carried out. The SS mathematical model successfully predicts the dynamic performance of FSM for various motion profiles, according to experimental results.

The effects of heat treatment temperatures on photocatalytic activity of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles synthesised by microwave-assisted combustion method

Karakaş, Ibrahim Hakki; Karcioğlu Karakaş, Zeynep

In this study, the effects on the photocatalytic activities of particles after heat treatment has been applied to cobalt ferrite nanoparticles produced by microwave-assisted combustion method were observed. The heat treatment applied to the samples was produced with only the microwave effect, at temperatures ranging from 300 to 1000°C. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed on the precursor sample in air atmosphere. During this analysis, the gases released up to 1200°C were identified with a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer integrated into a thermogravimetric analysis system. Then, the cobalt ferrite nanoparticles produced with heat treatments applied at various temperatures were used as a photocatalyst to remove the dyestuff content in synthetic wastewaters prepared by using Astrazon Red GTL textile dye by photocatalytic oxidation, and their photocatalytic activities were compared. In these experiments, the operational parameters for photocatalysis processes were applied as 400 rpm for stirring speed, 50 mg/L for initial contaminant concentration, 0.5 g/L for catalyst dosage, 25°C for temperature, and 4400 μW/cm2 for light intensity. As a result of the experiments, it was observed that the crystal structure of the cobalt ferrite nanoparticles produced with the increase of the applied heat treatment temperature improved significantly. The obtained data show a strong relationship between the structural properties of materials and their photocatalytic activities. In addition, it was determined that the dyestuff in the solution was completely degraded in the experiments, and it was determined that all processes were compatible with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model.

This study establishes EUROFIT reference values for physical fitness and anthropometric measurements in children aged 7-11 years in urban Kosovo. Analyzing data from 500 participants, the study examines age- and sex-based variations in motor abilities and morphological traits. Data was collected over three months, from April through June 2023, in a typical school setting during regular physical education class times. This environment was typically utilized by students to reduce performance variability caused by external conditions. Results reveal age-related increases in height, weight, and strength measures, consistent with growth trends during childhood. Boys showed higher performance in strength and power tests, while girls exhibited greater flexibility. The EUROFIT battery proved effective for assessing physical fitness across age groups. This research fills a data gap in Kosovo, providing valuable reference values for educators, coaches, and policymakers aiming to promote children’s health and physical activity.

Effect of Scandium Addition on Recycled A356 Alloy: Experimental Investigation and CALPHAD-Based Thermodynamic Analysis

Kutsal, Ümit; Barutçuoğlu, Burak; Sağnak, Yiğit; Toker, Abidin; Çatar, Recep; Çolak, Murat

This study systematically investigates the influence of scandium (Sc) additions at 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 wt.% on the melt quality, microstructural characteristics, fluidity, and mechanical performance of A356 aluminum alloy under recycling-oriented casting conditions. The alloy charge consisted of 20% primary aluminum and 80% recycled scrap, while the Fe content was maintained at 0.2 wt.%. Melt treatment was performed by rotary degassing using a commercial flux. Melt quality was assessed using the Reduced Pressure Test (RPT) and bifilm index analysis, whereas casting performance was evaluated through an eight-channel fluidity test. Mechanical behavior was characterized by tensile and Brinell hardness testing, and microstructural and phase analyses were conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). To complement the experimental investigation and provide a thermodynamic basis for interpretation, phase stability, solidification behavior, and phase-fraction evolution were examined using Thermo-Calc within the CALPHAD framework. By combining experimental characterization with computational thermodynamic analysis, this study elucidates the effect of Sc content on the processing–microstructure–property relationships of recycled A356 alloys and provides a systematic basis for evaluating Sc modification in high-recycled-content aluminum castings.

Economic complexity and energy vulnerability: Does ESG performance matter?

Ongan, Serdar; Kuziboev, Bekhzod; Makhmudov, Samariddin; Matyakubova, Aziza; Imamoglu, Ilyas Kays; Aydin, Rahman; Isik, Cem

Energy vulnerability is a critical concern for achieving energy security and meeting the SDGs. However, the role of economic complexity, which represents a country's production and export diversification, in energy vulnerability has been largely neglected in the literature. This study fills this gap by examining the impact of economic complexity on energy vulnerability for 69 developing countries over the period 2000-2019. For this purpose, MMQR and various instrumental variable (IV) estimation techniques (IV-Quantile, 2SLS, Lewbel, and Kiviet) were used. In addition, ESG indicators were included in the model as instrumental variables to address potential endogeneity issues between economic complexity and energy vulnerability. In doing so, the ESG indicators are also included in the model as instrumental variables to control for the endogeneity of economic complexity. Empirical findings show that economic complexity is associated with lower energy vulnerability across all quantiles. These results reveal that countries with diversified economic structures (higher economic complexity) may be more resilient to energy shocks. Therefore, developing countries should focus on structural reforms and improve their ESG performances to reduce energy vulnerability. In terms of control variables, financial development, digitalization, and human capital are associated with lower energy vulnerability, whereas increases in natural resource revenues are sometimes associated with lower vulnerability levels. This finding suggests that, in the context of energy vulnerability, the predictions of the resource curse theory may not be observed in every case.

The aim of the study was to identify genetic variants associated with personal best scores in Turkish track and field athletes and to compare allelic frequencies between sprint/power and endurance athletes and controls using a whole-exome sequencing (WES) approach, followed by replication studies in independent cohorts. The discovery phase involved 60 elite Turkish athletes (31 sprint/power and 29 endurance) and 20 ethnically matched controls. The replication phase involved 1132 individuals (115 elite Russian sprinters, 373 elite Russian endurance athletes (of which 75 athletes were with VO2max measurements), 209 controls, 148 Russian and 287 Finnish individuals with muscle fiber composition and cross-sectional area (CSA) data). None of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) reached an exome-wide significance level (p < 2.3 x 10(-7)) in genotype-phenotype and case-control studies of Turkish athletes. However, of the 53 nominally (p < 0.05) associated SNPs, four functional variants were replicated. The SIRT1 rs41299232 G allele was significantly over-represented in Turkish (p = 0.047) and Russian (p = 0.018) endurance athletes compared to sprint/power athletes and was associated with increased VO2max (p = 0.037) and a greater proportion of slow-twitch muscle fibers (p = 0.035). The NUP210 rs2280084 A allele was significantly over-represented in Turkish (p = 0.044) and Russian (p = 0.012) endurance athletes compared to sprint/power athletes. The TRPM2 rs1785440 G allele was significantly over-represented in Turkish endurance athletes compared to sprint/power athletes (p = 0.034) and was associated with increased VO2max (p = 0.008). The AGRN rs4074992 C allele was significantly over-represented in Turkish sprint/power athletes compared to endurance athletes (p = 0.037) and was associated with a greater CSA of fast-twitch muscle fibers (p = 0.024). In conclusion, we present the first WES study of athletes showing that this approach can be used to identify novel genetic markers associated with exercise- and sport-related phenotypes.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is among the most common neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by motor hyperactivity, attention deficit, distraction, impulsive behavior, and relationship difficulties. It affects children, and thus over the years, there has been growing attention on the use of natural product formulations and their naturally-occurring bioactive for overcoming the problem of ADHD. Concerning this issue, this review aims to discuss the ADHD treatment potential of natural products/formulations in vitro, in vivo as well as in clinical trials. To gather the most relevant data regarding bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic effects in the management of ADHD, the following databases were searched: PubMed/MedLine, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for articles in English. Various medicinal plants and their isolated biomolecules have been evaluated in vitro, in vivo, and in clinical trials for their ability to treat ADHD. Most of the analyzed research results showed an improvement of ADHD signs and symptoms in in vivo models, but the molecular mechanisms of action of the bioactive compounds are unclear and incompletely elucidated. Further studies are needed to determine the bioactive compound responsible for health-promoting effects in ADHD. In addition, clinical studies should be performed over longer periods with more participants.

The Role of Women's Labor Law and Business Freedom in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in OECD Countries

Isik, Cem; Ongan, Serdar; Isik, Olcay; Aydin, Rahman; Imamoglu, Ilyas Kays

Business freedom (FR) and women's labor law (WLL) are critical in achieving the SDGs. This research aims to test the effect of these two factors on the SDGs while also considering economic growth and energy efficiency, framing the analysis within the legal, economic, and environmental dynamics of the SDGs holistically. Fourier-augmented PANIC, cross-sectional dependence tests, panel OLS, bootstrap quantile regression, and panel Granger causality tests are applied for this aim. The OLS and bootstrap quantile regression analyses indicate that while FR negatively affects SDG at lower quantiles, these effects turn positive in higher quantiles. This can mean that in countries with high institutional quality, the freedom to do business becomes a tool for supporting sustainable economic development. The WLL has positive effects on SDGs in all quantiles except the 20th quantile. This result clearly shows the decisive role of women's labor rights and legal protections in driving sustainable development. The Granger causality test also supports these results: FR and WLL have a positive Granger causality effect on the SDGs. Additionally, while GDP positively affects SDGs in all quantiles, renewable energy efficiency negatively affects SDGs at low quantiles and has a positive impact at higher quantiles.

The environmental, social and governance (ESG) dimensions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on energy security

Isik, Cem; Ongan, Serdar; Kuziboev, Bekhzod; Imamoglu, Ilyas Kays; Amin, Azka

This study investigates the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on energy security (ENSEC) for 34 developed countries. It offers a new institutional perspective by linking CSR to ENSEC within the framework of sustainable development. MMQR, PLFC, and DID methods are used for this analysis. The MMQR results indicate that CSR enhances ENSEC across all percentiles (10%-90%) in both aggregate and disaggregated analyses, across the social, environmental, and governance dimensions. Moreover, the PLFC model's findings reveal that CSR promotes ENSEC in aggregate, regardless of income level. However, in the disaggregated estimates from the PLFC model, the social dimension of CSR has no effect on ENSEC, whereas the environmental and governance dimensions continue to have a positive effect on ENSEC. As for the impact of China's energy investment, only China's fossil energy investment ensures ENSEC. These findings provide important policy insights by empirically validating the role of CSR in addressing long-term energy risks.

One of the earliest and most prevalent processing methods to increase the shelf-life of foods is drying. In recent years, there has been an increased demand to improve product quality while lowering processing times, ex-penses, and energy usage in the drying process. Pre-treatments are therefore effectively used before drying to enhance heat and mass transfer, increase drying efficiency, and lessen degradation of final product quality. When food is dried, changes are expected in its taste, color, texture, and physical, chemical, and microbial properties. This has led to the need for research and development into the creation of new and effective pre-treatment technologies including high-pressure processing, pulsed electric field, ultraviolet irradiation, and ultrasound. Sound waves that have a frequency >20 kHz, which is above the upper limit of the audible frequency range, are referred to as ultrasound. Ultrasonication (US) is a non-thermal technology, that has mechanical, cavitational, and sponge effects on food materials. Ultrasound pre-treatment enhances the drying characteristics by producing microchannels in the food tissue, facilitating internal moisture diffusion in the finished product, and lowering the barrier to water migration. The goal of ultrasound pre-treatment is to save processing time, conserve energy, and enhance the quality, safety, and shelf-life of food products. This study presents a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of ultrasound, its mechanism, and how the individual effects of ultrasonic pre-treatment and the interactive effects of ultrasound-assisted technologies affect the drying kinetics, bioactive components, color, textural, and sensory qualities of food. The difficulties that can arise when using ultrasound technology as a drying pretreatment approach, such as inadequate management of heat, the employment of ultrasound at a limited frequency, and the generation of free radicals, have also been explained.

Inactivation of deteriorative enzymes preserves the quality of fruits and vegetables and extends the shelf-life of fruit juices. Ozonation and cold plasma treatment are recent additions to the thermal and non-thermal methods for enzyme inactivation. However, these techniques stand out in their effectiveness and versatility for the treatment of a wide range of fruits and vegetables. This article appraises the mode of action and applications of ozone and cold plasma for the inactivation of enzymes in fruits, vegetables, and fruit juices. Further, a comprehensive discussion is presented on the influential parameters of enzyme inactivation effectiveness of ozonation and cold plasma processing. Besides, the latter sections of this article highlight the challenges that impose hurdles in the commercial applications of these unconventional techniques and the way forward in improving their efficacy and industrial applications.

Background The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of Life Kinetik (LK) exercises on balance, agility, jumping performance, proprioception, and cognitive functions in recreationally active preadolescents participating in fencing. Methods The study lasted 8 weeks and included 22 preadolescents recreationally engaged in fencing, aged 11.6 +/- 1.2 years, with an average weight of 49.5 +/- 10.5 kg and an average height of 157.5 +/- 10.0 cm. Preadolescents were randomly assigned to either the LK group or the control group. The experimental group participated in LK exercises twice per week, with each session lasting one hour. Results The results indicate that the changes in Stroop, agility, vertical jump, and proprioception test performance between the pre-test and post-test for the control group are not statistically significant. However, the LK group showed statistically significant improvements in Stroop, agility, and vertical jump performance between the pre-test and post-test (p < 0.001). Conversely, the change in proprioception test performance between the pre-test and post-test for the LK training group was not statistically significant. The changes in star balance test performance between the pre-test and post-test for the control group was not statistically significant. In contrast, the LK group showed a statistically significant improvement in star balance test performance between the pre-test and post-test (p < 0.001). Conclusions These findings indicate that while LK exercises are effective in boosting overall athletic performance, they may not be sufficient for developing specific skills such as proprioception.
