The Relational Online Learner: Self-Directed Learning, University Belonging, and Student Engagement in Online Higher Education from a Self-Determination Theory Perspective

Kayalı, Bünyami; Yavuz, Mehmet; Üstün, Ayşin Gaye; Uçar, Hasan; Erdoğdu, Erdem; Aydemir, Mesut; Bozkurt, Aras

We examined the relationships between self-directed learning skills, university belonging, and student engagement in open online and distance learning environments within the framework of Self-Determination Theory. The research was conducted using a correlational survey model. Data were collected from 696 university students enrolled at a large-scale open, online and distance learning institution in Türkiye. We used three instruments measuring self-directed learning skills, university belonging, and student engagement. The data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The findings indicate that university belonging significantly and positively predicts all dimensions of student engagement. While self-control skills, learning skills, and sustaining the desire to learn significantly explain university belonging, metacognitive awareness and ability to identify sources were found to have no significant effect. Furthermore, it was found that university belonging acts as a significant mechanism in the relationships between self-control skills, learning skills, and sustaining the desire to learn, and student engagement. In this open and distance learning context, student engagement was not explained by individual learning skills alone. University belonging may therefore be one mechanism that partly accounts for the association between self-directed learning and academic participation. The study contributes by testing self-directed learning at the level of its dimensions, by identifying university belonging as a mechanism that partly accounts for its association with engagement, and by situating this model in a large-scale open and distance learning setting.

Reading intentions, not just behaviours: a NIKOM-informed pedagogical approach for religious education

    Çinici, Murat

Religious education (RE) meets a recurring diagnostic problem: a pupil can recite doctrine, join in ritual talk, and give the ‘right’ moral answer while the underlying belief stays untouched. This article introduces the Intention Code Model (NIKOM; Niyet Kodu Modeli) to RE as a disciplined language for that problem. NIKOM is a mechanistic cognitive framework built on conditional IF→THEN ‘codes’ that probabilistically chain, activate, and align bodily and cognitive systems, and can be rewritten. Its central claim–a surface-compliance paradox, whereby observable behavioural change need not indicate code-level change–maps onto Kelman’s distinction between compliance and internalisation. The article sets out NIKOM for an RE readership, positions it among established RE pedagogies, distinguishes it from Gollwitzer’s implementation intentions, and derives a pedagogical stance, dialogue moves, and a developmental proposal for ‘code literacy’, with worked religious and non-religious vignettes for primary and secondary levels. The setting is non-confessional, educational RE; behaviour is no index of belief, and the affective and spiritual dimensions of learning are not reduced to cognition alone. NIKOM is offered as a theoretical synthesis awaiting validation, not a proven method; the article closes with an ethical analysis of ‘rewriting’ pupils’ codes and a research agenda.

The effect of existing damage on the seismic performance of a historical masonry structure: a site-specific assessment

Tayfur, Bilal; Tunca, Osman; Artar, Musa; Çarbaş, Serdar

This study comprehensively evaluates the structural integrity and seismic performance of a historic masonry mosque, exhibiting significant settlement cracks, through an integrated approach combining field measurements and advanced numerical analyses. The Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) conducted to determine the dynamic characteristics of the structure. Field measurements revealed that the environmental vibrations originating from a nearby tram line causes significant amplitude incrase in one of the main columns. The dynamic characteristics of the structure obtained from field experiments are used to calibrate the numerical model via the Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm. The calibrated numerical model, taking into account the existing cracks in the structure using contact elements, was subjected to nonlinear analysis in the time domain under 11 site-specific ground motion records selected in accordance with the procedures of the Turkish Building Seismic Code. This analysis examined the seismic performance and damage mechanisms of the structure. The findings revealed that while existing settlement cracks contribute to seismic energy dissipation through frictional sliding and gap opening mechanisms, they may also serve as potential failure initiation points under strong ground motions. This study’s integrated approach, combining dual-purpose OMA application and explicit crack modeling with contact elements, constitutes a novel methodological framework for the realistic seismic assessment of historic masonry structures with pre-existing damage.

Background: Aerobic capacity and respiratory efficiency are critical determinants of performance in elite female football, characterized by repeated high-intensity efforts and rapid recovery demands. Halotherapy, involving the inhalation of dry salt aerosol, has been shown to improve pulmonary health; however, its effects on exercise-related outcomes in athletic populations remain insufficiently investigated. This study aimed to examine the effects of a 12-week post-training halotherapy intervention on respiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function, and aerobic performance in elite female football players. Methods: Twenty-eight elite female football players competing in the Turkish Women’s First League were randomly assigned to a halotherapy group (HG, n = 14) or a control group (CG, n = 14). Both groups completed an identical preseason training program, while the HG additionally performed 45 min halotherapy sessions three times per week in a controlled halochamber. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (MIP, MEP), spirometric parameters (FVC, FEV1, PEF, MVV), and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) estimated using the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 (Yo-Yo IRT1), along with total distance covered. A 2 × 2 mixed-model ANOVA was used to assess time and group × time interaction effects. Results: Significant group × time interactions were observed for MIP, MEP, VO2max, FEV1, PEF, MVV, and Yo-Yo IRT1 performance (p < 0.05), with large effect sizes (ηp2 = 0.269–0.924), favoring the halotherapy group. Forced vital capacity (FVC) increased over time in both groups (p = 0.141), with no significant interaction effect. Changes in the control group were comparatively smaller across most outcomes. Conclusion: Post-training halotherapy was associated with improvements in respiratory muscle strength, ventilatory function, aerobic capacity, and intermittent running performance in elite female football players. These findings suggest that halotherapy may be considered as a complementary, non-invasive strategy to support respiratory and aerobic adaptations. Further research is required to confirm these findings and to clarify the underlying physiological mechanisms. Trial registration: NCT07406386; 6 February 2026.

Experiences of parents of individuals with intellectual disabilities after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye: a phenomenological study

    Yarımkaya, Erkan; Bakkaloğlu, Hatice

Individuals with intellectual disabilities and their parents, who encounter many barriers in daily life, may experience even more serious problems when faced with a devastating disaster such as an earthquake. For effective earthquake preparation, it is important to identify these problems before the earthquake. However, studies examining the earthquake experiences of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their parents are quite limited. In this context, the aim of the current study was to explore the experiences of parents of individuals with intellectual disabilities who were affected by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye. This study used the phenomenological qualitative research design. In this study, there were 16 parents, who have children with intellectual disabilities and participated in face-to-face interviews. Interview data were analyzed thematically. Two overarching themes were found: (1) low level of earthquake preparedness, and (2) inaccessible needs. The findings revealed that the majority of parents of individuals with intellectual disabilities made few preparations for the earthquake, could not access many of their needs during and after the earthquake, and could not find a special unit for individuals with disabilities to explain their problems.

Semi-analytical analysis of orthotropic-isotropic contact in layered media with consideration of body forces

    Öner, Erdal; Oktay, Mine Gül

Contact mechanics is a key field that involves theoretical, computational, and experimental methods essential for tribology and designing components across various industries. It plays a crucial role in solving boundary value problems in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and medicine. This study investigates the continuous contact problem of an orthotropic layer positioned on an isotropic half-plane, utilizing a semi-analytical approach based on elasticity theory. The solution considers the body force generated within the orthotropic layer when subjected to frictionless loading by a rigid cylindrical punch. The research presents dimensionless results for key parameters, including contact length, contact stress, critical separation distance, and critical separation load, while examining the effects of different dimensionless variables and the characteristics of the orthotropic materials. The novelty of this study lies in its simultaneous analysis of isotropic and orthotropic material behavior in a contact mechanics problem, along with the incorporation of body forces—a combination that has not been previously explored for this specific geometry in the literature. The study offers a more comprehensive understanding of the contact mechanics involved by addressing the often-overlooked influence of body forces, which play a crucial role in stress distribution and material deformation, particularly in large-scale structures. This inclusion allows for more accurate predictions of material behavior in real-world engineering applications where gravitational loads are significant factors.

Structure-guided discovery of submicromolar 1,2,4-triazole–Schiff-base inhibitors of glutathione reductase

Manap, Sevda; Akar, Hande; Medetalibeyoğlu, Hilal; Atalay, Abdurrahman; Can, Zehra; Kara, Yakup; Alkan, Muzaffer; Beytur, Murat; Yüksek, Haydar; Ortaakarsu, Ahmet Buğra

Glutathione reductase (GR) plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular redox balance and is a promising target for ferroptosis-based cancer therapies. In this study, we report the design, synthesis, and comprehensive evaluation of a novel series of 1,2,4-triazole–Schiff base succinate derivatives (AUR-514–518) as potent GR inhibitors. In vitro Mannervik assays revealed vigorous submicromolar inhibitory activity, with AUR-517 emerging as the most effective (IC50 = 0.471 ± 0.032 μM), significantly surpassing quercetin (IC50 = 214.5 ± 18.5 μM). Antioxidant profiling revealed negligible radical scavenging activity; however, modest CUPRAC responses suggest a target-specific mechanism. To elucidate the molecular determinants of inhibition, we employed deep-learning–assisted protein–ligand affinity predictions, molecular dynamics simulations, MM/GBSA free-energy calculations, and dimensional reduction analyses. These computational studies revealed dual binding modes at both the catalytic site and dimer interface, with AUR-517 forming stable interactions with key catalytic residues, consistent with experimental potency rankings. The RMSD/RMSF profiles indicated enhanced conformational stability of GR–ligand complexes, while binding energy landscapes underscored the superior stability of AUR-517. Consequently, these findings establish the AUR series as a new class of structurally validated GR inhibitors, with AUR-517 representing a lead scaffold for the rational development of ferroptosis-sensitizing agents with translational potential in oncology.

Effects of Parent-Child Coparticipation in Physical Activity on Physical Activity Levels and Motor Skills of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Aydemir, Uğur; Yarımkaya, Erkan

This study aimed to examine the effects of parent-child coparticipation in physical activity (PA) on the PA levels and fundamental motor skills (FMSs) of children with autism spectrum disorder. Participants were assigned to one of the following three groups: (a) a parent-child group (n = 14), (b) a child group (n = 13), and (c) a control group (n = 13). After 8 weeks of intervention, the within-group comparison revealed a significant increase in PA levels and FMSs in children with autism spectrum disorder in the parent-child group and the child group (p < .001). The between-group comparison further showed that children in the parent-child group had statistically higher scores for PA levels and FMSs than children in the child and control groups (p < .001). These findings suggest that parent-child coparticipation in PA may be a promising component of family-based interventions to promote PA and facilitate the acquisition of FMSs among children with autism spectrum disorder.

Teacher Candidates with Biospheric Value, Farming and Openness Personality Type are Worried About Climate Change

Ulum, Ömer Gökhan; Alkış Küçükaydın, Menşure

Climate change is one of the most widespread problems affecting human well-being. Extreme weather events and ecosystem uncertainties also seriously threaten future teachers. However, we know little about the variables associated with teacher candidates’ climate change worry (CCW). Therefore, this study aims to identify the variables that predict CCW. In this study, the survey model was used to determine the variables associated with teacher candidates CCW. A total of 508 teacher candidates (72.4% female and 27.6% male) from Turkey participated in the study. The age range of the teacher candidates was 21 to 24 (M = 21.1, SD = 1.23). Hierarchical regression analysis was used to evaluate the data. According to the results, teacher candidates who earn their living by farming and have a biospheric value orientation experience CCW. Some personality traits also relate to CCW. The results provided insight into the variables related to teacher candidates’ CCW. This situation is important for the support training for teacher candidates.

Feature selection with annealing for forecasting financial time series

    Pabuccu, Hakan; Barbu, Adrian

Stock market and cryptocurrency forecasting is very important to investors as they aspire to achieve even the slightest improvement to their buy-or-hold strategies so that they may increase profitability. However, obtaining accurate and reliable predictions is challenging, noting that accuracy does not equate to reliability, especially when financial time-series forecasting is applied owing to its complex and chaotic tendencies. To mitigate this complexity, this study provides a comprehensive method for forecasting financial time series based on tactical input–output feature mapping techniques using machine learning (ML) models. During the prediction process, selecting the relevant indicators is vital to obtaining the desired results. In the financial field, limited attention has been paid to this problem with ML solutions. We investigate the use of feature selection with annealing (FSA) for the first time in this field, and we apply the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) method to select the features from more than 1000 candidates obtained from 26 technical classifiers with different periods and lags. Boruta (BOR) feature selection, a wrapper method, is used as a baseline for comparison. Logistic regression (LR), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and long short-term memory are then applied to the selected features for forecasting purposes using 10 different financial datasets containing cryptocurrencies and stocks. The dependent variables consisted of daily logarithmic returns and trends. The mean-squared error for regression, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, and classification accuracy were used to evaluate model performance, and the statistical significance of the forecasting results was tested using paired t-tests. Experiments indicate that the FSA algorithm increased the performance of ML models, regardless of problem type. The FSA hybrid models showed better performance and outperformed the other BOR models on seven of the 10 datasets for regression and classification. FSA-based models also outperformed Lasso-based models on six of the 10 datasets for regression and four of the 10 datasets for classification. None of the hybrid BOR models outperformed the hybrid FSA models. Lasso-based models, excluding the LR type, were comparable to the best models for six of the 10 datasets for classification. Detailed experimental analysis indicates that the proposed methodology can forecast returns and their movements efficiently and accurately, providing the field with a useful tool for investors.

Widely reported anisotropy in 3D printed cementitious structures has been a primary concern to structural integrity, especially for fiber-reinforced cementitious material, e.g., engineered cementitious composites (ECC). To alleviate the anisotropy present in 3D printed ECC (3DP-ECC), two innovative printing patterns, “knitting” and “tilting” filaments, were proposed, mimicking the natural crossed-lamellar structure of conch shells. 3D spatial paths were designed to allocate tensile/flexural resistance to multiple directions and to create an interwoven interface system to strengthen the structure. Four-point bending tests loading from three different directions were conducted. It was found that knitted and tilted filaments revealed superior or comparable bending performance to cast ECC in two favorable orientations. Furthermore, flexural performance in the weakest orientation was notably improved by knitting and tilting, with up-to-179% increases in flexural strength compared with that of parallel filaments. This novel approach holds great promise in alleviating anisotropy of 3DP-ECC without introducing additional reinforcement.

Kirbaş, Zila Özlem; OdabaşI Aktaş, Elif; Bayraktar, Bülent; Özkan, Hava

Background: Newborns are exposed to varying degrees of stressful interventions due to procedures such as heel lancing used in routine metabolic screenings. It is an examination of the effects of white noise and kangaroo care on some physiological parameters and stress markers (cortisol and glucose-regulated protein 78-GRP78) in heel lancing in newborns. Methods: Randomized controlled study was conducted at a gynecology service of a hospital between January and September 2023. 90 babies were divided into three groups: 30 babies in the Kangaroo Care Group (KCG), 30 babies in the White Music Group (WMG), and 30 babies in the Control Group (CG). All babies were randomly divided into groups. Stress parameters were measured by saliva collection method and physiological parameters by saturation device. Results: A statistically significant difference was determined between the total crying time, pulse and saturation values according to the groups (p < 0.001; p = 0.001). A statistically significant difference was determined between the mean values of cortisol and GRP78 measurements according to group and time interaction (p < 0.001). KCG was more effective in reducing total crying time and stabilizing pulse, saturation, salivary cortisol, GRP-78 values compared to WNG and CG. Conclusion: It was concluded that white noise and kangaroo care help reduce newborns’ stress in the case of heel lancing. Practical implications: The practice of kangaroo care and the use of white noise methods may assist healthcare professionals as supportive methods in stress management during invasive procedures. Trial Registration: NCT06278441, registered on 19/02/2024.

Recruiting grape-isolated antagonistic yeasts for the sustainable bio-management of Botrytis cinerea on grapes

    Oztekin, Sebahat; Karbancioglu-Guler, Funda

Botrytis cinerea is the causative agent of grey mould disease in grapes, which was linked to significant postharvest losses. This study examined three grape-isolated yeasts (Metschnikowia aff. fructicola, Metschnikowia pulcherrima, and Hansenispora uvarum) through in vitro and in vivo tests on detached grape berries against grey mould, as well as the elucidation of their possible mechanisms of action. The antifungal mechanism of action of yeasts was determined by the lytic enzyme activity, inhibition of spore germination, biofilm activity, iron depletion, diffusible metabolites, wound-site colonisation, mycocin, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) production. The highest in vitro efficacy (83.13%) was observed on M. aff. fructicola, followed by M. pulcherrima (82.10%) and H. uvarum (71.66%). Metschnikowia yeasts exhibited comparable enzyme activities, including protease, β-1,3 glucanase, gelatinase chitinase, and cellulase, while H. uvarum had a poor enzymatic activity with chitinase and gelatinase. M. aff. fructicola showed relatively higher iron depletion activity than M. pulcherrima, while M. pulcherrima outperformed via diffusible metabolites. All yeast cultures significantly reduced spore germination by at least 86%. Overall, M. aff. fructicola exhibited the highest biocontrol activity with its iron depletion, inhibition of conidial germination, biofilm formation, VOCs, and well colonisation on grape berries. M. aff. fructicola 1-UDM outperformed all other yeasts by significantly reducing disease incidence and lesion diameter values (93.4% and 94.3%, respectively). Remarkably, H. uvarum VOCs demonstrated potential as a biofumigant for suppressing grey mould. All yeasts are well adapted to their ecological niche to bio-protect grapes from grey mould disease.

Boundedness of solutions to a quasilinear parabolic–parabolic chemotaxis model with variable logistic source

    Ayazoglu, Rabil; Akkoyunlu, Ebubekir

    This paper deals with the higher dimension quasilinear parabolic–parabolic chemotaxis model involving a source term of logistic type ut= ∇ · (ϕ(u) ∇ u) - ∇ · (ψ(u) ∇ υ) + g(x, u) , τυt= Δ υ- υ+ u, in(x,t)∈Ω×(0,T), subject to nonnegative initial data and homogeneous Neumann boundary condition, where Ω is a smooth and bounded domain in RN, N≥ 1 and ψ, ϕ, g are smooth, positive functions satisfying νsq≤ ψ≤ χsq, ϕ≥ σsp, p, q∈ R, ν, χ, σ> 0 when s≥ s> 1 , g(x, s) ≤ ηsk(x)- μsm(x) for s> 0 , η≥ 0 , μ> 0 constants and g(x, 0) ≥ 0 , x∈ Ω , where k, m are measurable functions with 0≤k-:=essinfx∈Ωk(x)≤k(x)≤m+:=esssupk(x)x∈Ω<+∞, 1<m-:=essinfx∈Ωm(x)≤m(x)≤m+:=esssupm(x)x∈Ω<+∞. We extend the constant exponents k= { 0 , 1 } , m> 1 which in logistic source term g(s) ≤ ηsk- μsm for s> 0 , η≥ 0 , μ> 0 as variable exponents k(·) ≥ 0 , m(·) > 1 with k+< m-. It is proved that if q= m-- 1 (critical case) with μ properly large that μ > μ for some μ> 0 , then there exists a classical solution which is global in time and bounded. Furthermore, if q< m-- 1 , we prove that the classical solutions to the above system are uniformly in-time-bounded without restriction on μ.

A Multi-perspective Exploration of Contact Behavior in Orthotropic Layer Resting on Isotropic Half-Plane

Terzi, Merve; Öner, Erdal; Uzun Yaylacı, Ecren; Oktay, Mine Gül; Yaylacı, Murat

Contact problems which concern the stress distribution resulting from the interaction between two elastic bodies have long been a focus of research. In the field of solid mechanics, they hold particular importance because loads are generally transmitted to deformable bodies through their points of contact. This study investigates the contact problem of a layered medium containing a homogeneous orthotropic layer and an isotropic half-plane using a multi-method approach. A rigid flat indenter is applied to the orthotropic layer with frictional effects neglected, while the influence of body forces in the orthotropic layer is taken into account. Key contact parameters such as the contact stress under the indenter, the initial separation load, and the point of initial separation are determined as part of the analysis. The study is structured into three main sections. In the first section, the problem is analytically examined based on classical elasticity theory. Within this framework, a singular integral equation governing the contact problem is derived and solved numerically. The second section presents a finite element analysis using ANSYS software to simulate the contact interaction and evaluate the stress distribution. In the third and final section, the problem is addressed through artificial neural network (ANN) techniques, offering a data-driven perspective. Ultimately, the results obtained from the analytical, numerical (FEM), and ANN-based methods are compared, showing excellent agreement across all approaches.

Design, synthesis, and inhibition of α-glucosidase by novel L-phenylalanine-derived hydrazones: Kinetic, molecular docking, and dynamics studies

Kalay, Erbay; Adem, Şevki; Demir, Yeliz; Aslan, Osman Nuri; Şahin, Engin; Eyupoglu, Volkan; Rawat, Ravi; Çomaklı, Veysel

In this paper, a series of novel hydrazones derived from L-phenyl alanine were synthesized in four steps and employed to inhibit α-glucosidase through kinetic studies, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics analyses. Among the synthesized compounds, 8, 15, and 16 exhibited the strongest inhibitory effects, with IC50 values of 31.08 μM, 24.15 μM, and 19.47 μM, respectively, surpassing the standard inhibitor acarbose (79.63 μM). Molecular docking studies revealed robust interactions, with compound 16 achieving the highest MolDock score of −176.316. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to evaluate the binding affinity of compound 16 to the isomaltase enzyme from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (3A4A). The most favorable docking pose was subjected to further analysis through MD simulations under dynamic conditions. The MMGBSA analysis of the simulation cluster indicated a strong binding affinity of approximately −43.06 kcal/mol, highlighting the compound's potential for modulating α-glucosidase activity. These results underscore the potential of bromine and hydroxyl-substituted hydrazones to modulate isomaltase activity, with therapeutic implications for hyperglycemia and obesity management.

In this study, seventeen floral honey samples collected from Türkiye’s Çoruh Valley were examined and a total of 59 parameters were analyzed to evaluate their quality attributes. Accordingly, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), diastase activity, fructose, glucose, sucrose, total fructose + glucose (F + G), the fructose/glucose ratio (F/G), color and δ13C isotope values were determined together with amino acid profiles, organic acid composition, mineral contents, and phytohormone profiles. All chemical and biological data were evaluated using multivariate statistical approaches, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Pearson correlation analysis and Hierarchical Clustering Analysis (HCA), to characterize similarities and differences among the samples. The analytical results demonstrated that honeys from this region comply with established quality standards and exhibit natural purity, balanced chemical composition, and favorable nutritional properties. The detection of diverse phytohormone types and concentrations across the samples, as revealed by the analyses, indicates a rich biochemical signature originating from plant sources. This finding also highlights the functional properties, biological value, and nutritional significance of these honeys. Overall, the results confirm that the floral honeys obtained from Türkiye’s Çoruh Valley are high-quality products in terms of both chemical and biological properties.
