- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Contact mechanics of functionally graded orthotropic layer under normal traction and gravity: an analytical perspective
Öner, Erdal; Al-Qado, Ahmed Wasfi Hasan
Contact mechanics is a complex and advanced field of engineering, with continuous research dedicated to modeling and examining contact problems in multilayered and multibody systems. Given that fatigue and fracture failures often result from contact loads, precise determination of subsurface stresses is crucial for the design of mechanical components. This study provides an exact analytical solution for the frictionless indentation of a functionally graded (FG) orthotropic layer by a rigid cylindrical punch. The FG orthotropic layer, which rests on a rigid, non-adhesive substrate, is treated as a nonhomogeneous medium with an orthotropic stress–strain relationship. Part of its top surface experiences normal tractions, while the rest remains traction-free. The analysis also incorporates the gravitational force affecting the FG orthotropic layer. Five distinct real orthotropic materials are used, each with individually graded stiffness constants in their principal directions, to define the FG orthotropic behavior of the material. The governing equations are formulated using the singular integral equation method and transformed into algebraic systems via the Gauss–Chebyshev integration technique. A comprehensive parametric study examines how variations in dimensionless punch radius, compressive force, inhomogeneity parameters, and body force influence contact widths, contact pressures, normal and shear stresses, critical load factor, and the initial point of interface separation.

Yılmaz, Özlem; Kutlu, Naciye; Kamiloğlu, Aybike; Elbir Abca, Tuğba
In this study, the microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of pectin from persimmon was optimized using a Box-Behnken experimental design, with pH, extraction time, and liquid-to-solid ratio as independent variables. The optimization results obtained through response surface methodology indicated optimum conditions of pH 1.78, extraction time of 8 min, and a liquid-to-solid ratio of 125 mL/g, corresponding to a predicted pectin yield of 4.28%. In the validation experiment, the actual pectin yield was determined to be 3.79 ± 0.04%, confirming a good agreement with the model predictions. The degree of esterification, methoxyl content, galacturonic acid and ash contents, water- and oil-holding capacities, antioxidant activity, rheological behavior, and structural properties (FT-IR, DSC, and 1H NMR) of the samples obtained under optimal MAE and conventional extraction conditions were compared. Based on the degree of esterification, both samples were classified as high-methoxyl, with galacturonic acid contents of 41% and 42% for the MAE and conventionally extracted samples, respectively; both values were below the ≥ 65% level specified for commercial food-grade pectin. The ash content was higher in the MAE sample (7.22%) than in the conventionally extracted sample (1.56%). MAE resulted in a pectin-rich complex with a relatively low galacturonic acid content and higher antioxidant activity than the conventionally extracted sample. Furthermore, the MAE sample exhibited higher water-holding capacity but lower oil-binding capacity than the conventionally extracted sample. Rheological analysis showed that the MAE sample exhibited higher apparent viscosity and shear stress than the conventionally extracted sample. FT-IR analysis revealed more pronounced absorption bands in the MAE sample, suggesting structural differences. DSC analysis revealed differences in the thermal behavior of the MAE and conventionally extracted samples. Additionally, 1H NMR analysis supported the presence of characteristic pectic structural features in both samples. The greenness assessment of the method was assessed using the Greenness Evaluation Metric for Analytical Methods (GEMAM), which yielded an overall score of 7.482, indicating a high level of environmental acceptability. Overall, MAE can be considered an efficient and sustainable approach for obtaining a pectin-rich complex with antioxidant activity from persimmon.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Investigating the association of reading habits and attitudes with meaningful living: The mediating role of subjective well-being
Özbilen, Uğur; Güven, Ahmet Zeki; Şahin, Tuğrul Gökmen; Banaz, Emrullah
This study explores the impact of reading habits on Turkish language teachers' perception of a meaningful life, with a particular focus on the mediating role of subjective well-being. Drawing upon positive psychology and narrative identity theories, the research aims to highlight the cognitive and emotional mechanisms through which reading fosters existential meaning. Data were collected from 328 Turkish language teachers through validated self-report scales and analyzed using path analysis with structural equation modeling (SEM). Both direct and indirect effects were tested using bootstrapped mediation analysis. The results revealed that reading habits and attitudes significantly predicted perceptions of a meaningful life, both directly and indirectly via subjective well-being. Although the direct path was modest in effect, subjective well-being emerged as a strong mediator. No significant demographic differences were found regarding perceptions of meaningful living. The findings suggest that reading is not merely an intellectual activity but a multidimensional experience that contributes to personal meaning-making and psychological well-being. The study underscores the need for teacher education programs to integrate reading as a tool for holistic development, extending beyond professional competence to emotional and existential enrichment.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Optimization of surface modification parameters of calcium carbonate in the rotary-vibration mill with a fuzzy-based taguchi experimental method
Özdemir, Akın; Uçurum, Metin
Ultra-fine calcium carbonate (UCC) is used as a filler material in polymers, and after a surface modification (coating) process, its surface changes from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. However, conventional coating techniques such as raymond and pin mills are widely used in the industry; there is still a need for new, inexpensive, and practical methods. Mechanochemical technologies are considered one of the most effective alternatives. The rotary-vibration mill (RVM) works mechanically and is characterized by low investment and operating costs. There are three main contributions in this paper. First, a fuzzy-based Taguchi experimental design is proposed to analyze a fuzzy response under uncertainty. Second, the surface modification of UCC with stearic acid was carried out using RMV, with five modification parameters and an active ratio fuzzy response. Moreover, the results indicate that RVMs are an alternative mechanochemical surface modification technology for preparing coated calcium carbonate (CCC). Finally, particle size distribution (PSD), contact angle, XRD (X-Ray Diffraction Analysis), TGA-DTA (Thermogravimetric Analysis-Differential Thermal Analysis), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer), and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) analyses were conducted for the coated calcium carbonate (CCC) acquired from the optimum conditions of the modification study.

Background: Earthquakes are calamities of devastating nature that induce longterm post traumatic stress on affected victims. As such, they are recognized worldwide as being huge sources of stress. In this research study, the first objective is to assess the level of trauma and earthquake stress of university students who exercise and those who do not. Methods: This study utilized the descriptive survey research method. The sample comprised 378 male and 300 female students who experienced the socially detrimental 7.7 Mw and 7.6 Mw earthquakes in Turkey on February 6, 2023. The data were both face-to-face and via computer-administered questionnaire with the tools of “Post-Earthquake Trauma Level Scale” and “Earthquake Stress Coping Strategies Scale.” After checking for normality, the parametric tests were used, the t-test to compare two groups of data, and ANOVA for three or more groups of data. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analyses were performed to compare the interactions between students who exercise and those who do not. Results: The study found that gender affected trauma levels, with female students (X = 73.483) exhibiting significantly higher trauma levels than male students (X = 68.799) (p < 0.001). Students who engaged in regular physical activity (X = 67.71) were found to have lower trauma levels compared to those who did not exercise (X = 71.97). Participants who feared being caught by the earthquake at home or school (X = 73.32), experienced the loss of someone close (X = 88.10) or believed that adequate precautions against the earthquake had not been taken (X = 71.73) had higher trauma scores. According to the results of the ANOVA test, students from the Departments of Sports Sciences (X = 69.78) and Religious Studies (X = 69.63) were observed to have lower trauma levels. Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive and moderate relationship between trauma levels and earthquake stress coping strategies among students who engaged in regular physical activity (r =.176, p < 0.01). Conclusions: The research identified that factors such as gender, regular exercise, the experience of losing a loved one, and the perception that insufficient precautions were taken all significantly influence trauma levels. Moreover, the findings highlighted that regular physical exercise serves as an effective strategy for managing and coping with trauma.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ4Effect of Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation Process on Corrosion Resistance of Al-Coated AZ61 Magnesium Alloy
Durna, İdris; Çatar, Recep; Altun, Hikmet
Magnesium alloys are extensively utilized in aerospace, aviation, and automotive sectors due to their low density and high specific strength, which offer significant advantages for lightweight structural applications. Their low density especially directs the attention of the aviation sector, where lightness is necessary, to these alloys. However, one of the disadvantages that restricts their use in the industry is their low corrosion resistance. In this study, the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) process was applied in a silicate-based electrolyte to AZ61 magnesium alloy pre-coated with aluminum using the electric arc spraying technique. To examine the characteristics of the fabricated coatings, their phase structures, surface features, and elemental compositions were investigated through XRD, SEM, and EDS analyses. Corrosion performances of coatings were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization test in 3.5% NaCl solution. As a result of electrochemical tests, corrosion current density values for the base sample (AZ61) and PEO coating (AZ61-PEO) were determined as 36,29 μA. cm−2 and 6,53 μA. cm−2, respectively. The findings highlight that the Al₂O₃ layer formed following PEO treatment significantly enhanced the corrosion resistance compared to the base sample.

In this study, the radiation shielding parameters of AZ61 magnesium (Mg) alloy, which is used in automotive, aerospace, and biomedical fields due to its low density, high specific strength, and biocompatible properties, were determined to investigate its usability in nuclear protection applications. Firstly, Al coating was applied to AZ61 Mg alloy by electric arc spray process and then ceramic oxide layer was obtained by micro arc oxidation (MAO) method. Then, the radiation shielding properties of AZ61 alloy were investigated. The radiation shielding parameters such as mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), mean free path (MFP), half-value layer (HVL) and effective atomic numbers (Zeff) were measured in gamma spectrometer with Ba-133 radioactive sources. The fast neutron removal cross-sections (ΣR), exposure buildup factors (EBF) were theoretically determined. The results revealed that the duplex coating (AZ61-Al-O) significantly enhanced the gamma shielding capability compared to the uncoated AZ61 alloy, achieving about 8.0 % higher MAC at 383.8 keV. Therefore, the AZ61-Al-O sample can be considered a promising lightweight material for radiation protection applications.

Sari, Fahriye; Ozel, Sultan Suleyman; Ozel, Faruk; Kus, Mahmut; Wilton, Richard Hall
A major challenge in PSCs lies in the carrier transport losses induced by band misalignment and elevated series resistance, which adversely impact the fill factor and device stability, ultimately restricting the overall power conversion efficiency. Due to their tunable band gaps, low fabrication cost, strong light-harvesting capability, adequate carrier lifetime, chemical stability, and environmentally benign nature, chalcogenide perovskites have emerged as highly promising materials for optoelectronic applications. In this study, the quaternary semiconductor nanostructure Cu2MnSnS4 (CMTS) was synthesized via a simple and cost-effective hot-injection method and investigated as an alternative inorganic hole transport layer (HTL) candidate. Indium tin oxide-based perovskite solar cells without any metal oxide interlayer achieved a remarkable PCE of 9.87% and retained more than 92% of their initial efficiency after 720 hours, demonstrating enhanced stability. These findings highlight the critical role of cation–anion interactions in improving device stability and underscore the importance of developing innovative, low-cost, and efficient inorganic HTL materials for the commercial advancement of perovskite solar cells.

Çutay, Arif; Tozlu, Alperen; Kütük, Begüm; Özahi, Emrah
The hydrodynamic behavior of spouted beds is strongly influenced by inlet flow conditions, particularly under pulsating operation. In this study, a three-dimensional Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid model coupled with the kinetic theory of granular flow was used to investigate the effects of pulsation frequency and waveform on the hydrodynamics of a conical spouted bed. Steady, sinusoidal, pulsatile, and square-wave inlet conditions were analyzed at 1, 3, 5, and 10 Hz. A multi-parameter evaluation framework was applied by combining spout height, temporal stability, axial gas and particle velocity distributions, and mixing characteristics. Spout height was determined using the connected αs=0.05 iso-contour, while temporal behavior was quantified through the mean spout height, standard deviation, coefficient of fluctuation, and fluctuation range. The results show that spout performance depends not only on instantaneous inlet velocity but also on the persistence of axial momentum transfer. Although the steady condition and some high-penetration pulsating cases produced relatively large instantaneous spout heights, they did not necessarily provide the most favorable hydrodynamic behavior because of rapid velocity decay, stronger fluctuations, or reduced structural coherence. Pulsation at 3 Hz provided the best overall balance by sustaining particle transport and improving temporal stability. The 5 Hz cases enhanced mixing but exhibited larger fluctuations, whereas the 10 Hz cases produced weaker and less coherent spout structures because of rapid attenuation of the imposed oscillations. Overall, the proposed framework demonstrates that spouting performance should be evaluated through the combined effects of penetration, stability, momentum persistence, and mixing.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Exploring the transformative power of GenAI in education: an exploratory journey from social studies classes
Yetişensoy, Okan
The potential of GenAI in educational settings has attracted considerable attention, yet practical explorations of its use in K-12 classrooms are still scarce. This research aims to explore the role of GenAI models in social studies, focusing on their influence on learning-teaching processes and understanding of AI. While exploring the influence of GenAI on pedagogical aspects from the perspective of the teacher and students, this qualitative study also embraces AI as a cross-curricular theme and seeks to understand how GenAI-supported teaching activities shape students’ AI understanding. The study group of this research, conducted according to the basic qualitative research design, consisted of 21 middle school students studying in one class and a social studies teacher who implemented the practices. The primary data collection tool for the research was semi-structured interview forms. In the relevant research, a teaching framework supported by GenAI, combining “Teaching with AI” and “Teaching about AI” was developed. During the four-week process, the practitioner teacher covered the curricular outcomes using lesson plans designed in alignment with this framework. In the semi-structured interviews, students stated that engaging in activities supported by GenAI not only made the learning process more effective and interesting but also enhanced their understanding regarding AI. The teacher highlighted that GenAI models encouraged constructivist learning environments, ensured the active involvement of all students, including those in inclusive education, and contributed to AI learning through their engaging structure. Additionally, the teacher highlighted technology’s drawbacks, including encouraging dependence on convenience and potentially providing inaccurate information. The relevant findings of the study, serving as first observations, are expected to provide valuable insights for future research. At this point, it is recommended that further studies be conducted to explore the transformative potential of GenAI in education, especially by employing experimental designs. An additional suggestion, on the other hand, is to disseminate AI throughout the entire curriculum of all subjects within a specific educational level as a cross-curricular theme, as opposed to limiting its teaching to merely a singular, isolated subject area.
