- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Exergy and DFT-Based Thermodynamic Analysis of a Rankine–VCR Marine Waste Heat Recovery System
Keven, Arzu; Akçay, Enes; Gümüş, Hacer
This study investigates the performance of a diesel engine exhaust gas-driven Rankine Cycle-supported vapor compression refrigeration system using quantum chemical approaches beyond conventional thermodynamic analyses. The study focuses on R448A and its components, namely R32, R125, R134a, R1234yf, and R1234ze(E), evaluated at both the system level and the molecular level. At the system level, the Rankine–VCR system was analyzed using a Fortran-based macroscopic thermodynamic model, in which the thermophysical properties of the working fluids were obtained from the NIST Chemistry WebBook. At the molecular level, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to determine molecular structure parameters, including entropy, heat capacity, chemical hardness, and thermal enthalpy correction. The main objective is to investigate the possible relationships between these molecular descriptors and system-level performance indicators, while considering that mass flow rate is primarily governed by cycle thermodynamic properties. The results show that molecular stability and structural order are strongly associated with system performance. Among the R448A components, R32, with the highest chemical hardness (8.19 eV) and lowest molecular entropy (58.9 cal/mol K), exhibits the most favorable exergetic behavior and achieves the highest plant exergy efficiency of 44.92%. In contrast, R1234ze(E), chemically softer (η = 4.42 Ev) and higher in entropy, exhibits the lowest performance. Additionally, R32’s lower thermal enthalpy correction is associated with higher latent heat of vaporization under the selected operating conditions, reducing the required mass flow by approximately 60–70% compared to the other components. This study demonstrates that, in refrigerant selection, not only the global warming potential (GWP) but also quantum parameters such as chemical hardness, molecular entropy, heat capacity, and thermal enthalpy correction can serve as important complementary performance indicators when interpreted together with macroscopic thermodynamic and exergetic results.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Enhanced Absorption-Dominant EMI Shielding Performance of Pyramidal Cementitious Composites Incorporating Recycled Plastics and Magnetite Minerals for 5G Applications
Cakir, Mehmet; Engin, Mustafa Alptekin; Camuzcuoglu, Murat
In this study, waste polypropylene (PP) and magnetite (Fe3O4) mineral-reinforced cement-based pyramidal composite structures were designed, manufactured, and experimentally characterized to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems in the 3.3–4.9 GHz frequency band for 5G communication systems. Unlike traditional planar concrete surfaces, the aim was to minimize surface reflections and obtain an absorption-dominant shielding mechanism by providing gradient impedance matching through the pyramidal geometry. Although the use of carbon-based nanomaterials is common in the current literature, their high cost and corrosion risks limit their large-scale applications. This study involves the evaluation of waste polypropylene disposal and self-enriching magnetite mineral together. Theoretical analyses were supported by the Lichtenecker Logarithmic Mixing Rule and the Maxwell–Garnett model, and seven different mixing scenarios (S1–S7) were measured using the free-space method with a Libre vector network analyzer. Experimental results showed that the pure concrete sample exhibited predominantly reflective behaviour, with shielding performance improving significantly as the filler ratio increased. The S4 sample, containing 15% PP and 10% magnetite, offered broadband and balanced absorption performance, while the S7 sample, containing 25% PP and 25% magnetite, provided the highest shielding effectiveness with reflection below −10 dB across the entire band and transmission loss reaching −65 dB.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2Barriers to physical activity in individuals with autism spectrum disorders after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in Türkiye
Yarımkaya, Erkan; Şenlik, Zeynel Abidin; Demir, Mehmet; Töman, Ufuk; Kul, Murat; Türkmen, Mutlu
The individual, environmental and systemic physical activity (PA) barriers experienced by individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in daily life may become more complex after a devastating disaster such as an earthquake. In order to effectively combat the high level of inactivity that may occur after an earthquake in individuals with ASD, PA barriers must be determined before the earthquake. However, no description is provided in the literature regarding the PA barriers experienced by individuals with ASD after the earthquake. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to examine parents’ experiences regarding PA barriers experienced by individuals with ASD after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye. Fifteen parents of individuals aged 8 and 31 with ASD were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using both inductive and deductive content analysis approach. Three overarching themes were found: (1) the effects of PA on individuals with ASD, (2) post-earthquake PA barriers, and (3) the consequences of lack of PA in individuals with ASD. The results revealed that parents were aware of the benefits of PA and directed their children with ASD to PA before the earthquake. However, after the earthquake, parents encountered PA barriers that they had to overcome, and this negatively affected the children with ASD.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1The Effect of Inquiry-based Science Learning Supported By Augmented Reality On Scientific Process Skills and Academic Achievement in Preschool
Arici, Faruk
Inquiry-based learning (IbL) is widely recognized as an effective pedagogical approach in early science education; however, young learners often struggle to engage with abstract concepts and sustain inquiry processes. Augmented reality (AR) has the potential to address these challenges by enhancing interaction, visualization, and engagement in learning environments. Although previous studies have demonstrated the positive effects of IbL and AR separately, empirical evidence examining the combined impact of AR-supported IbL on preschool students’ academic achievement and scientific process skills (SPS) remains limited, particularly in early childhood science education. This study aimed to investigate the effects of AR-supported IbL, IbL alone, and the current preschool science curriculum on children’s academic achievement and SPS. In addition, participants’ perspectives on learning experiences, skill development, and instructional activities were explored. A mixed-methods design was employed with three groups: AR-supported IbL, IbL-only, and a control group following the existing curriculum. Quantitative data were collected using achievement and SPS assessments, while qualitative data were collected through repeated teacher observations and in-depth interviews conducted throughout the intervention. Results indicated that AR-supported IbL led to significantly higher academic achievement and SPS than IbL alone or the current curriculum. While IbL was more effective than the curriculum-based approach, integrating AR further strengthened inquiry cycles and particularly enhanced measurement, communication, and prediction skills. Observational and interview data supported these findings by revealing increased curiosity, engagement, and active participation. The findings suggest that integrating AR within inquiry-based pedagogical frameworks can substantially improve the effectiveness of preschool science education. Implications are discussed for curriculum design, teacher professional development, and the development of developmentally appropriate AR-supported learning environments.

Kaya, Mükerrem; Sayın, Bilge; Çinar Topçu, Kübra; Kaban, Güzin
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of autochthonous strains (Pediococcus pentosaceus 128b, Latilactobacillus sakei S15, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum S91, L. plantarum S24 and Staphylococcus carnosus G109) used as mono and mixed starter cultures on the quality attributes of traditionally produced sucuk, a Turkish dry fermented sausage, in a local small-scale facility. At the end of ripening, samples underwent comprehensive microbiological and physicochemical analyses. The use of autochthonous starter cultures (ASC) showed no statistically significant influence on thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and water activity value. Lower pH values were observed in groups with autochthonous lactic acid bacteria strains (ALABS) compared to the control group. However, ALABS inhibited Micrococcus/Staphylococcus growth by rapidly lowering the pH, except in the groups with S. carnosus G109. The use of ASC led to an increase in the L* values of sucuk samples, except monoculture L. plantarum S91. The correlation heat map illustrating the relationships between the starter cultures and volatile compounds revealed that all groups containing L. plantarum S91 exhibit a volatile compound profile different from other single or mixed cultures. According to the results of the principal component analysis performed to determine the relationship between the chemical groups of the starter cultures and volatile compounds, the groups containing L. plantarum S91 differed from the other groups and showed positive correlations with phenols, furans, acids, terpenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, nitrogenous compounds, esters, and aliphatic hydrocarbons.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ3A comprehensive analysis of the ground motions of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye earthquakes
Kiral, Adnan; Tonyali, Zeliha; Ergun, Mustafa
With a focus on the dynamic characteristics of the ground motion recorded in Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye, this study provides an overview of the historical seismicity of the Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) as well as the characteristics of the Pazarcik and Elbistan earthquakes (Mw=7.7 and Mw=7.6) that resulted in property loss and casualties on February 6, 2023. Analyzing the ground motion and local site effects for the earthquake region has been the subject of extensive research in the past. Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs) are one of the evaluation techniques utilised in the literature. Previous research employing this approach and other techniques suggested that the earthquake region’s geotechnical and seismological conditions are complicated, particularly in Hatay City. In this study, to further investigate the ground motions, six GMPEs, which were previously proposed for the USA, Europe and the Middle East, are adopted. The findings of this study are integrated with those from previous research for comprehensive assessments. This study shows that the PGA of the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes cannot be fully predicted using GMPEs, which use epicentral distance (Repi) in the equation. As a result, further research into rupture distance (Rrup) or Joyner-Boore distance (Rjb)-based equations is necessary. Also, the complexity of the region (i.e., irregularities present in alluvial deposits) and the high PGA values could be responsible for such a result. This study emphasizes the region’s need to have more sophisticated GMPEs in the future.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Writing autonomy in digital environments: Comparison of middle school students' writing autonomy perceptions in print and digital environments
Maden, Aslı; Maden, Sedat; Önal, Aydın
Writing autonomy is a key goal in writing education, as it supports the development of independent, motivated, and confident writers. It plays a crucial role in increasing students' engagement, fostering positive attitudes toward writing, and alleviating writing-related anxiety. In this context, examining how different writing environments -print and digital- affect writing autonomy can provide valuable insights for improving writing instruction. This study, designed using a relational survey model, investigated the relationship between writing environments and writing autonomy among 301 middle school students from grades 5 through 8. Data were collected using the Writing Autonomy Scale (Tekşan & Süğümlü, 2018) and a researcher-developed Personal Information Form. The study was designed according to the relational survey model, a quantitative research method. The following statistical analyses were employed in the data analysis: arithmetic mean, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed no significant difference in students' levels of writing autonomy between print and digital environments. In both settings, students demonstrated a moderate level of autonomy that was comparable. Additionally, writing habits were not found to significantly influence autonomy in either environment. However, a positive correlation was identified between students' writing autonomy in print and digital contexts, suggesting consistency in their autonomous writing behaviors across formats. Based on these findings, the study recommends the effective integration of both print and digital tools in writing education to further support the development of students' writing autonomy.

Bekir, Seyhan; Yayla, İbrahim Erdoğan; Makas, Samet; Manci, Egemen; Yildirim, Murat
Objective: Problematic online gaming has emerged as a growing concern among young adults, often linked to reduced well-being and increased mental health problems. This study aimed to investigate whether depression, anxiety, and stress mediate the relationship between life satisfaction and problematic online gaming among young adults. Method: A total of 336 Turkish students participated in this cross-sectional study by completing self-reported measures of life satisfaction, depression, anxiety, stress, and problematic online gaming via an online survey. Results: Results indicate that lower life satisfaction related to higher levels of stress and depression, which in turn increase problematic online gaming behaviors. In contrast, anxiety did not have a significant mediating role, since its confidence interval included zero. Conclusions: In conclusion, both direct and indirect associations were found between lower life satisfaction and problematic online gaming, through stress and depression. Anxiety was not found to have a significant mediating effect in this relationship. These findings suggest that interventions aimed at enhancing life satisfaction and reducing psychological suffering could help to prevent such behavior.

The aim of this study was to characterize Ranunculus pinardii and Ranunculus constantinopolitanus species anatomically and phytochemically. In order to contribute to the taxonomic characterization of R. pinardii and R. constantinopolitanus, anatomical structures of the stem, leaf, and petiole of species were examined with light microscopy. Total phenolic-flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, total anthocyanin, total proanthocyanidin, and individual phenolic compounds of extracts prepared with different solvents were determined. The results showed that the total phenolic contents of the species had a similar range (0.09-0.45 mg GAE/g for R. pinardii and 0.01-0.44 mg GAE/g for R. constantinopolitanus), but R. constantinopolitanus exhibited higher antioxidant activity (29.28 mg TE/g). Higher individual phenolic compound recovery was achieved from R. pinardii compared to R. constantinopolitanus with all solvents, except methanol. Both species were rich in luteolin, a natural flavonoid (163.98-34417.11 µg/kg for R. pinardii and 44.93-129009.44 µg/kg for R. constantinopolitanus). These results indicate that these plants contain bioactive ingredients that may have applications in different fields, such as medicine, cosmetics, and food. In particular, the detection of luteolin compound at high levels in these species compared to other components indicates that optimization studies aimed at the recovery of luteolin are important for future research.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Development and psychometric evaluation of the Self-Regulated Nursing Care Scale (SRNCS) among Turkish nurses
Akeren, Zahide; Akeren, İhsan; Isik, Hafsa Kubra
Background: Self-regulation refers to individuals’ ability to control themselves, manage their behaviours and learn from their environment. Self-regulated learning skills may support nurses in providing effective care. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate the Self-Regulated Nursing Care Scale (SRNCS) for assessing nurses’ self-regulated nursing care skills based on Zimmerman’s Self-Regulated Learning Model (Z’SLM) and the relevant literature. Methods: The planning, implementation and evaluation components of nursing care were considered in relation to the forethought, performance and self-reflection phases of Z’SLM. Data were collected online between November 2022 and January 2023 from nurses working in state hospitals. Content validity was assessed through expert review. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed using data from 201 and 239 nurses, respectively. Criterion validity and reliability were also examined. Results: EFA yielded a 16-item, three-dimensional structure comprising planning, implementation, and evaluation and explaining 63.9% of the total variance. CFA supported this three-factor structure in an independent sample. Criterion validity was supported by correlations with the Counselling Skills in Nurses Scale. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.95 for the overall scale and 0.81, 0.87, and 0.93 for the planning, implementation, and evaluation dimensions, respectively. The test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.77. Conclusion: The findings support the validity and reliability of the Turkish form of the SRNCS for assessing self-regulated care skills among nurses providing inpatient care. The scale may be used in research and clinical settings to assess planning, implementation and evaluation dimensions of self-regulated nursing care. Future studies may examine relationships between SRNCS scores and care-related outcomes.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Associations between technology use, perceived burdensomeness, and independence among rural older adults
Bal, Betül; Apaydin, Emine
Objective: This study aims to examine the relationships among perceived burdensomeness, technology use habits, and activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults residing in rural areas. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted with 384 older adults living in rural areas in two different regions of Turkey. Data were collected using an Information Form, the Geriatric Perceived Burdensomeness Scale, the Barthel Index for Activities of Daily Living, and the Technology Use Habits Scale. Results: Perceived burdensomeness was moderately and negatively correlated with ADL (r = − 0.484, p < 0.001), whereas technology use habits were weakly but positively correlated with BADL (r = 0.192, p < 0.001). In the hierarchical regression analysis, technology use habits showed a positive and statistically significant association with ADL in the initial model (β = 0.189, p < 0.001). When perceived burdensomeness was added to the model, it emerged as a strong negative predictor of ADL (β = −0.497, p < 0.001), substantially increasing the explained variance. In the fully adjusted model, perceived burdensomeness, age, digital device use, and duration of digital device use were significantly associated with ADL, whereas age did not significantly affect the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and ADL. Overall, perceived burdensomeness and technology use habits were identified as key factors related to functional independence among rural older adults. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that perceived burdensomeness and technology use habits are closely associated with independence in activities of daily living among older adults living in rural areas. These findings indicate an association between technology use and perceived burdensomeness and provide a foundation for future research in nursing practice and rural health services. Future research is recommended to focus on evaluating technology-based and psychosocial interventions that support independence and psychosocial well-being in rural older populations. Clinical trial number: Not applicable.

The objective of this study is to utilize artificial intelligence techniques for the diagnosis of complications and diseases that may arise after liver transplantation, as well as for the identification of patients in need of transplantation. To achieve this, an interface was developed to collect patient information from Atatürk University Research Hospital, specifically focusing on individuals who have undergone liver transplantation. The collected data were subsequently entered into a comprehensive database. Additionally, relevant patient information was obtained through the hospital’s information processing system, which was used to create a data pool. The classification of data was based on four dependent variables, namely, the presence or absence of death (“exitus”), recurrence location, tumor recurrence, and cause of death. Techniques such as Principal Component Analysis and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) were employed to enhance the performance of the models. Among the various methods employed, the LDA method consistently yielded superior results in terms of accuracy during k-fold cross-validation. Following k-fold cross-validation, the model achieved the highest accuracy of 98% for the dependent variable “exitus”. For the dependent variable “recurrence location”, the highest accuracy obtained after k-fold cross-validation was 91%. Furthermore, the highest accuracy of 99% was achieved for both the dependent variables “tumor recurrence” and “cause of death” after k-fold cross-validation.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2Perceived burdensomeness and happiness in cohabiting older adults: The serial mediating roles of mental well-being and loneliness
Akeren, Zahide; Akeren, Ihsan; Kalyoncuo, Servet
Background Aging-related changes and increased dependence on family members may negatively affect older adults’ psychological well-being. Perceived burdensomeness refers to the belief that one is a burden on others and has been associated with lower happiness, reduced mental well-being, and greater loneliness. Among adults living with their families, mental well-being and loneliness may explain how perceived burdensomeness relates to happiness in later life. Purpose This study examined the associations between perceived burdensomeness and happiness among older adults living with their families and evaluated the serial mediating roles of mental well-being and loneliness. Methods This cross-sectional study included individuals aged ≥65 years residing with family members in a city in Turkey’s Eastern Black Sea region. Data were collected from 273 older adults; after preliminary screening, 7 cases were excluded, resulting in a final analytic sample of N = 266. Measures included the Geriatric Feelings of Burdensomeness Scale, WHO-5, the Happiness Scale, and the Loneliness Scale for the Elderly. Serial mediation was tested using a regression-based approach with bootstrap confidence intervals. Results Perceived burdensomeness was associated with lower mental well-being and higher loneliness. The total association between burdensomeness and happiness was negative (β=-0.467), and more than two-thirds of this association operated indirectly through mental well-being and loneliness. Conclusion and Implications Perceived burdensomeness was associated with lower happiness among older adults living with their families, primarily through reduced mental well-being and increased loneliness. In geriatric nursing and primary care, routinely assessing these psychosocial factors and implementing family-centered and social support-oriented interventions may help improve happiness.

Ertürk, Ömer; Can, Zehra; Yaman, Mustafa
This work was accomplished to establish the chemical components and bioactivity potential of the nest materials of Polistes nimpha (Christ), Polistes dominula (Christ), and Vespa crabro (L.). The biological and chemical compounds of materials and their molecular functionalities were detected using FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) method, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) free radical method, and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis. Finally, the bioactivity potentials of nest extracts were assayed and phenolic components were determined. C, N, O, Na, Ca, K, Mg, Al, Si are the elemental components of the nest materials. All nest extracts of three species had high biological activity against nine bacteria and one fungus causing common infections. The maximum antibacterial and antifungal activity was seen when gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, gram-positive Bacillus cereus, and gram-positive Candida albicans were exposed to ethanol extracts of nest samples in 25 μL. High antioxidant activity can be found in the nest extracts. These extracts might help researchers find novel antifungal and antibacterial substances.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Effects of core and dynamic balance training on motor characteristics in Turkish basketball league players
Kiratli, Tuncay; Yildirim, Yavuz; Şahin, Cihad; Saritemur, Büşra
This study aimed to investigate the effects of 8 weeks of core and dynamic balance training on reaction speed and agility in A-team basketball players. A total of 29 male basketball players participated in the study, with athletes divided into two groups: experimental (n=14) and control (n=15). The experimental group received core and dynamic balance training three days a week in addition to technical and tactical basketball training for 8 weeks, while the control group received only technical and tactical training for the same duration. Body fat percentage (measured with Tanita BC 418-ma), the lane agility drill, and reactive shuttle run tests were conducted before and after the training as performance measurements. When analyzing the pre-test and post-test results regarding the effects of core and dynamic balance training on the motoric characteristics of players in the Turkish Basketball League, no significant difference was found in the Reactive Shuttle Run test for the experimental group (p<0.05). However, significant differences were observed in both the experimental and control groups for the other tests (p>0.05). The findings indicated that core and dynamic balance exercises, when added to basketball training, did not show an additional effect on the athletes in the experimental group, unlike the control group. However, no difference was found in the results of the Reactive Shuttle Run test between the two groups.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Experimental and numerical investigation of flux trapping in bulk YBCO under different permanent magnet configurations
Uzun, Oguzhan; Abdioglu, Murat; Ozturk, U. Kemal
This study investigates flux trapping in bulk YBaCuOx (YBCO) high-temperature superconductors (HTS) under various permanent magnet configurations (PMCs) through both experimental and numerical methods. A finite element method (FEM) based on the H-formulation of Maxwell's equations is employed to simulate the HTS-PM interaction, showing good agreement with experimental results in peak trapped flux density values. The maximum trapped flux densities for PMC-1, PMC-2, PMC-3, and PMC-4 were measured as 207 mT, 359 mT, 392 mT, and 478 mT, respectively, demonstrating the significance of PMC design in optimising flux trapping in HTS materials. Enhanced flux trapping was observed with configurations including additional permanent magnets, such as PMC-2 and PMC-4, yielding trapped flux efficiencies of 77.5 % and 55.0 %, respectively. Obtained results in trapped flux efficiency are very impressive as compared to a value of 23 % trapped flux efficiency in literature in which a solenoid magnet with a 3 T peak value of magnetic flux density is used to trap a magnetic field in the HTS. The magnetic flux trapping methodology of this research is very effective for magnetic bearing applications with self-stabilisation in which high magnetic fields are not needed since it doesn't need any magnetic field sources with complex structures, such as coils, to facilitate the magnetic field trapping in the HTSs.

- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Psychological well-being, body image and self-esteem in elite and amateur female taekwondo athletes in Türkiye
Gönen, Mevlüt; Türkmen, Mutlu; Çakır, Zekai; Arı, Fatih; Çatıkkaş, Fatih
Background: Female athletes competing in weight-category sports may experience unique psychological pressures related to body image, performance expectations, and sociocultural gender norms. While elite sport participation is often assumed to enhance psychological functioning, evidence remains mixed. This study examined differences in psychological well-being, body image, self-esteem, and athletic identity between elite and amateur female taekwondo athletes in Türkiye, a cultural context characterised by distinct gender and body norms, and explored their associations with psychological well-being. Türkiye represents a theoretically relevant context in which institutional weight regulation intersects with sociocultural gender norms, creating a setting in which body-related psychological experiences may be uniquely shaped by both sport structures and cultural expectations. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed with 233 female taekwondo athletes (107 elite, 126 amateur; M_age = 22.0 ± 3.2 years). Participants completed validated Turkish versions of the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS), the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS). Independent samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlations, and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted. Results: No significant differences were found between elite and amateur athletes in psychological well-being or self-esteem. Elite athletes demonstrated significantly stronger athletic identity (p <.001), whereas amateur athletes reported significantly, though modestly, higher body image scores (p =.046). In regression analyses, self-esteem (β = 0.428, p <.001) and body image (β = 0.354, p <.001) were significant predictors of psychological well-being, jointly explaining 52.6% of the variance (R² = 0.526), with self-esteem showing the strongest independent association. Effect size estimates indicated that differences were large for athletic identity (d = 0.75), small for body image (d = 0.26), and negligible for psychological well-being and self-esteem (d = 0.09 and d = 0.13, respectively). Conclusions: Psychological well-being in female taekwondo athletes was more strongly associated with self-esteem and body image than with competitive level. These findings support prioritising self-esteem and body appreciation in structured psychological support programs for female athletes in weight-category sport systems.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1How accurately do large Language models interpret sport safeguarding principles: an evaluation using the International Olympic Committee framework
Gökmen, Mehmet Yiğit; Belibağlı, Mehmet Cenk; Karıncaoğlu, Ergin; Nazlıcan, Mahmut Çağatay; Türkmen, Eren; Yönal, Mehmet; Uluöz, Eren
Background: Safeguarding in sport, defined as the prevention of abuse, harassment, and exploitation, has become a core ethical responsibility for sport organizations. With the growing influence of artificial intelligence, large language models are increasingly being used to interpret, summarize, and operationalize policy documents. However, their reasoning fidelity in value-laden contexts such as athlete protection remains uncertain. Methods: This document-based comparative study evaluated two advanced large language models, ChatGPT (OpenAI) and NotebookLM (Google), against twenty-five decision points derived from the 2024 International Olympic Committee Consensus on Interpersonal Violence and Safeguarding in Sport. Responses were independently scored by two evaluators across four dimensions: accuracy, ethical reasoning, applicability, and responsibility awareness. Quantitative and qualitative analyses assessed concordance with IOC recommendations, inter-rater reliability, and reasoning patterns. Structured PICO-style prompts were used to ensure standardized and comparable model interrogation across all decision points. Results: ChatGPT achieved a higher mean composite score (3.84 ± 0.41) than NotebookLM (3.32 ± 0.77) (Wilcoxon Z = 3.41, p = 0.001, r = 0.68; n = 25 paired decision points), with full concordance in 21/25 (84.0%) versus 14/25 (56.0%) decision points. Inter-rater agreement was excellent (Cohen’s kappa = 0.89). ChatGPT demonstrated stronger procedural reasoning and clearer alignment with IOC-defined responsibilities, while NotebookLM emphasized empathy and cultural nuance. Both models underperformed in survivor-centred reasoning and outcome evaluation metrics. Conclusion: LLMs can partially reproduce the ethical and procedural logic embedded in sport safeguarding frameworks, but their reasoning remains incomplete without human oversight. Their integration into governance, education, and policy translation should follow clear ethical guardrails to prevent misinterpretation or amplification of harm. These systems may support policy drafting, education, and communication, yet they should function strictly as augmentative tools rather than independent decision-makers. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically benchmark LLM reasoning against an official international safeguarding framework in sport. Future research should evaluate interactive and multilingual applications to enhance contextual accuracy and equitable safeguarding outcomes.

The data were collected using the Socio-demographic Information Form, Good Death Scale (GDS), and Death Literacy Index (DLI). The data were analyzed by Pearson correlation, independent sample t test, and one-way ANOVA. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to determine the predictors of good death perception. The STROBE checklist was used in the study. Findings: The mean GDS score was 59.53 ± 4.49, and the mean DLI score was 100.70 ± 12.11. It was determined that those who are older, male, married, have worked longer in the clinic, and have knowledge about a good death have higher average scores on the GDS. The models explain 91.8% of the variance in the perception of good death. Discussion: Our study shows that as death literacy increases, nurses’ perceptions of a good death tend to decrease. This situation suggests that as nurses’ knowledge and awareness of death increase, the inadequacies of the healthcare system and the impact of limited resources may cause them to develop a more negative perception. Death literacy in nurses is a new concept, and further studies are needed in different cultures. Conclusions: In the study, it was observed that death literacy levels and good death perceptions of nurses were above average, and as the death literacy level of nurses increased, their good death perceptions decreased. Age, gender, marital status, working time in the clinic and knowledge about good death affect the perception of good death of nurses working in palliative care. Implications for nursing: By improving their understanding of death literacy and the principles of a good death, palliative care nurses can achieve greater job satisfaction and develop a more positive attitude toward end-of-life care. In addition, systematically incorporating death literacy into nursing education curricula and continuing professional development programs, and the establishment of evidence-based clinical guidelines and standard care protocols will improve the quality of palliative care services.
