- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ4Experience-Based Decentralized Marketing and Advertising (Ex-Mad): A Blockchain Framework for Transparent and Fair Digital Campaigns
Ayberkin, Doruk; Özen, Üstün
The contemporary digital advertising ecosystem faces critical technical and operational challenges, primarily driven by centralized intermediaries, data opacity, and privacy vulnerabilities. To address these systemic issues, this paper proposes "Ex-Mad," a decentralized architecture leveraging blockchain technology and the Interplanetary File System (IPFS). The proposed framework integrates three core architectural layers: the user entities (advertisers and end-users), the blockchain ledger for immutable transaction recording, and IPFS for distributed content storage. Unlike traditional centralized models, Ex-Mad utilizes smart contracts to automate campaign management and enforce trustless interactions, ensuring verifiable reward distribution based on user contribution without third-party validation. Furthermore, the integration of IPFS optimizes on-chain storage costs by handling large media files off-chain while maintaining data integrity through cryptographic hashes. The system design enhances auditability through a tamper-proof ledger, eliminates single points of failure, and provides a technically robust alternative to current ad-tech intermediaries. This study demonstrates how the proposed architecture improves system efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness in the digital advertising domain.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ3An exergoeconomic analysis of a wastewater treatment plant: investigation and optimization of sludge drying—a case study
Dagci, O.; Tozlu, A.; Berber, A.
The primary parameters in wastewater treatment plant applications are pollutant removal in compliance with standards and energy costs. This study conducts exergy, exergoeconomic, and optimization analyses on the Konya Wastewater Treatment Plant to enhance its energy efficiency. All assessments of the plant were based on actual operational data. Numerical calculations were executed using Engineering Equation Solver software. Exergoeconomic analyses were performed using the Specific Cost Method, while optimization calculations employed the Net Present Value approach. Thermodynamic calculations revealed that the exergy efficiency of the biogas engine was 30.8%, which increased to 39.8% when integrated into a cogeneration system. The overall exergy efficiency of the plant was calculated to be 35.3%, which rose to 58.6% when stabilized sludge was utilized as fuel. During the optimization phase, various drying systems were evaluated, and a hybrid greenhouse-solar-panel drying system was identified as the optimal model. The analyses indicated that the total cost was minimized at the maximum dryness value (70%), suggesting that the greenhouse-type drying system could achieve regional conditions. Compared to thermal and solar energy systems, hybrid systems have been observed to offer significant advantages in first-year costs. Optimization studies reveal that hybrid systems provide 41% greater cost savings in initial investment and operational expenses compared to thermal systems, and 29% greater savings compared to solar energy systems. Meeting the system's energy demand with fossil fuels results in annual emissions of 76,850 tons of CO₂ and 1500 tons of harmful pollutants, equivalent to removing 19,000 cars from traffic or preserving 7300 hectares of forest. Significant soil and ecosystem degradation also occurs. The use of solar energy substantially reduces these environmental impacts, improving air quality and conserving natural resources.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ2Economic complexity and energy vulnerability: Does ESG performance matter?
Ongan, Serdar; Kuziboev, Bekhzod; Makhmudov, Samariddin; Matyakubova, Aziza; Imamoglu, Ilyas Kays; Aydin, Rahman; Isik, Cem
Energy vulnerability is a critical concern for achieving energy security and meeting the SDGs. However, the role of economic complexity, which represents a country's production and export diversification, in energy vulnerability has been largely neglected in the literature. This study fills this gap by examining the impact of economic complexity on energy vulnerability for 69 developing countries over the period 2000-2019. For this purpose, MMQR and various instrumental variable (IV) estimation techniques (IV-Quantile, 2SLS, Lewbel, and Kiviet) were used. In addition, ESG indicators were included in the model as instrumental variables to address potential endogeneity issues between economic complexity and energy vulnerability. In doing so, the ESG indicators are also included in the model as instrumental variables to control for the endogeneity of economic complexity. Empirical findings show that economic complexity is associated with lower energy vulnerability across all quantiles. These results reveal that countries with diversified economic structures (higher economic complexity) may be more resilient to energy shocks. Therefore, developing countries should focus on structural reforms and improve their ESG performances to reduce energy vulnerability. In terms of control variables, financial development, digitalization, and human capital are associated with lower energy vulnerability, whereas increases in natural resource revenues are sometimes associated with lower vulnerability levels. This finding suggests that, in the context of energy vulnerability, the predictions of the resource curse theory may not be observed in every case.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1The Role of Women's Labor Law and Business Freedom in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in OECD Countries
Isik, Cem; Ongan, Serdar; Isik, Olcay; Aydin, Rahman; Imamoglu, Ilyas Kays
Business freedom (FR) and women's labor law (WLL) are critical in achieving the SDGs. This research aims to test the effect of these two factors on the SDGs while also considering economic growth and energy efficiency, framing the analysis within the legal, economic, and environmental dynamics of the SDGs holistically. Fourier-augmented PANIC, cross-sectional dependence tests, panel OLS, bootstrap quantile regression, and panel Granger causality tests are applied for this aim. The OLS and bootstrap quantile regression analyses indicate that while FR negatively affects SDG at lower quantiles, these effects turn positive in higher quantiles. This can mean that in countries with high institutional quality, the freedom to do business becomes a tool for supporting sustainable economic development. The WLL has positive effects on SDGs in all quantiles except the 20th quantile. This result clearly shows the decisive role of women's labor rights and legal protections in driving sustainable development. The Granger causality test also supports these results: FR and WLL have a positive Granger causality effect on the SDGs. Additionally, while GDP positively affects SDGs in all quantiles, renewable energy efficiency negatively affects SDGs at low quantiles and has a positive impact at higher quantiles.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2The environmental, social and governance (ESG) dimensions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on energy security
Isik, Cem; Ongan, Serdar; Kuziboev, Bekhzod; Imamoglu, Ilyas Kays; Amin, Azka
This study investigates the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on energy security (ENSEC) for 34 developed countries. It offers a new institutional perspective by linking CSR to ENSEC within the framework of sustainable development. MMQR, PLFC, and DID methods are used for this analysis. The MMQR results indicate that CSR enhances ENSEC across all percentiles (10%-90%) in both aggregate and disaggregated analyses, across the social, environmental, and governance dimensions. Moreover, the PLFC model's findings reveal that CSR promotes ENSEC in aggregate, regardless of income level. However, in the disaggregated estimates from the PLFC model, the social dimension of CSR has no effect on ENSEC, whereas the environmental and governance dimensions continue to have a positive effect on ENSEC. As for the impact of China's energy investment, only China's fossil energy investment ensures ENSEC. These findings provide important policy insights by empirically validating the role of CSR in addressing long-term energy risks.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Does Climate Change Vulnerability Cause Energy Vulnerability in Sustainable Development?
Isik, Cem; Ongan, Serdar; Kuziboev, Bekhzod; Imamoglu, Ilyas Kays
Climate change and energy security are two fundamental vulnerability areas that interact with each other and hold critical importance for sustainable development goals. This research aims to fill the research gap by investigating the effects of climate change vulnerability (CCV) on the energy vulnerability (EV) relationship, which has not been adequately addressed in the literature, using a large panel dataset covering 74 countries and employing various methodological approaches (MMQR, PLFC, DID). The results of the MMQR model indicate that CCV increases EV across all quantiles. According to the results of the PLFC model, it is revealed that CCV on EV varies depending on the economic development level of countries. This effect is higher in low-income countries. The study also employs the DID model to examine the impact of China's foreign energy investments on countries' EV. According to this model, China's fossil-based energy investments, particularly those in the energy sector, increase the EV of countries. While economic development reduces EV across all quantiles, financial development reduces it in the lower and medium quantiles (25% and 50%); urbanization reduces it in the medium and higher quantiles (50% and 75%). All results show that the interaction between EV and CCV is a multidimensional and dynamic process. Accordingly, policymakers should develop integrated strategies that consider environment and energy policies, economic development, investment type, and environmental risks. Lastly, policymakers should consider energy investments from China not only as a tool for their country's economic growth, but also in terms of energy security and sustainability.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ2The moderating effects of geopolitical risks on sustainable development through economic complexity and renewable energy consumption in 25 oil-producing countries
Ongan, Serdar; Özdemir, Dilek; Imamoglu, Ilyas Kays; Isik, Cem
Conflicts in controlling or using natural resources, arising from geopolitical risks (GPR), which have become a new normal today, can damage natural ecosystems and threaten sustainable development. In this context, GPR can turn the positive impact of supporting independent variables on sustainable development (SD) into a negative one. This research investigates the moderating effects of GPR on SD through renewable energy consumption (REN) and economic complexity (EC) in 25 oil-producing countries with relatively higher oil-reserve-related risks between 2000 and 2021. The panel quantile regression analysis reveals. (i) While using REN individually improves SD in countries with high SD (in the 80th and 90th quantiles), this improving effect turns to a worsening effect due to its interaction with GPR, which shows the moderating impact of GPR. (ii): While EC individually improves SD across all quantiles, these improving effects persist in countries with low SD (in the 10th, 20th, 30th, and 40th quantiles) even when complexity interacts with GPR, showing that GPR has no moderating impact on SD. Therefore, policymakers should investigate why the interaction of REN with GPR worsens SD in highly sustainable countries and redevelop regulatory renewable energy policies accordingly.

Eygu, Hakan; Coşkun, Hüseyin
This study aims to reveal the impact of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption on CO2 emissions in Türkiye and the potential to reach the CO2 emission level targeted in the 2030 Paris Agreement. In the first stage, the cointegration relationship was analyzed with the AARDL model approach using annual data for 1965-2022. According to the results of the analysis, in the long run, non-renewable energy consumption increases CO2 emissions, while renewable energy consumption decreases CO2 emissions. In the second phase of the research, three scenarios were prepared for each of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption. For nine scenarios, including combinations of these scenarios, CO2 emissions that may occur until 2030 were estimated using the econometric simulation method. According to the estimation results, the low non-renewable energy consumption and high renewable energy consumption scenario was determined as the scenario that can reduce CO2 emissions the most until 2030. However, even in this case, it is understood that more investment in renewable energy will be required since the 2030 CO2 emission reduction target will not be achieved. Therefore, policymakers need to enact policies to increase incentives for renewable energy generation in both the public and private sectors and take steps to improve the necessary infrastructure.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2025The Leading Role of the State in Industrialization and the Importance of Innovation: Example of South Korea
Yazıcı, Sinan
It is possible to date the history of industrialization back to the 16th century. However, the time period accepted as the beginning of industrialization is the beginning of factory production in England in the second half of the 18th century. Western European countries such as France, Germany, and the Netherlands joined the process in the first half of the 19th century. Later, non-European countries such as Egypt and the USA joined the process. However, Egypt's industrialization process was interrupted by the Baltalimanı Trade Agreement. South Korea also joined the industrialization/development process in the second half of the 20th century. Thus, the capitalist world system continued to spread from Europe to other parts of the world. This study aims to examine South Korea, one of the examples of industrializing countries, within the framework of the Modern World System theory. According to this theory, the capitalist world economy was formed as a result of competition between states. Competition, one of the most important concepts of this theory, is a factor that leads to both the increase in the number of countries and the developments in technology in industrialization. In this context, the importance of innovation and the leading role of the state in the sustainability of competition emerges. As a result of the study, South Korea, which entered the industrialization process at the end of the Second Industrial Revolution with no other resource than labor force, started industrialization with a serious planning process led by the state. It has also reached the position of being a central/industrialized country by focusing on R&D and innovation studies since the 1980s. It has been found that the MDS theory has explanatory power in the industrialization/central country process experienced by South Korea.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Speeding up the Discrete Cosine Transform Through Custom Operations and Fixed-Point Arithmetic
Akçay, Latif; Engin, Mustafa Alptekin
Digital signal processing applications are becoming increasingly important because modern systems work with much larger amounts of data than before. The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), used in almost all multimedia compression methods, creates a significant computational load especially in resource-constrained embedded systems. This study proposes four custom operations compatible with Transport-Triggered Architecture (TTA). To enhance computational efficiency and avoid floating-point overhead, fixed-point arithmetic is used. To analyse the effect of the proposed operations, different Application-Specific Instruction Set Processor (ASIP) configurations were created on a general-purpose processor architecture. Performance analyses show that speedups between 2x and 3.5x are achieved. In addition, the developed processor models have been implemented in hardware. FPGA synthesis results indicate a reasonable increase in chip area, showing that the proposed solutions could be an efficient alternative, particularly for limited-resource embedded systems.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Optimization and Mechanical Performance of Alkali-Activated Bottom Ash and Polypropylene Fiber in Deep Mixing Columns
Yilmaz, Fatih; Kamiloğlu, Hakan Alper; Avlayan, Büşra
Deep mixing columns (DMC) are one of the widely used soil improvement methods in cohesive and cohesionless soils. Cement and lime are predominantly used as conventional binders in DMC grout. Due to high CO2 emissions from conventional binders, the feasibility of using alkali-activated binders as DMC grout is being investigated. This study was conducted in three main stages. In the first stage, the proportions of bottom ash and activator (mixture of 10M NaOH and Na2SiO3) were optimized to achieve the highest UCS value using response surface methodology (RSM). In the second stage, the influence of polypropylene fiber content was examined in detail by incorporating varying amounts of fibers into the optimized binder-activator mixture to determine the optimal fiber content. Since DMC are fully buried, they are cured in the soil media. In this case, the soil temperature, which varies along the depth of the soil, also becomes the curing temperature of the DCM. Due to climate, soil condition and thermodynamic based parameters, curing temperature of the DMC varies throughout the soil depth. Therefore, in the third stage, the effect of curing temperature on the mechanical properties of the stabilized samples was evaluated under different temperatures. Results of the study revealed optimal UCS values with AAB content of 0.3-0.5 and activator content of 0.45-0.5. Polypropylene fiber reinforcement further improved strength, reaching an optimum at 1.50-1.75% content. Curing temperature played a significant role, with UCS and modulus of elasticity increasing up to 30 °C, indicating the importance of considering environmental factors in DMC design. These findings suggest that the optimized mixture has the potential to replace conventional cement-based binders in DMCs, offering a more sustainable solution with lower carbon emissions. Furthermore, the observed influence of curing temperature highlights the need to account for subsurface thermal variations when designing DMCs, as these factors significantly affect strength gain and long-term performance.

Topcu, Muhammed Taha; Tozlu, Alperen; Bilen, Kadir
This paper presents a thermoeconomic analysis of the Dual-Loop Organic Rankine Cycle (DORC) integrated into the Erzurum Mall Power Plant (EMPP). The DORC system is designed to utilize waste heat at 425 degrees C and 9 kg/s, producing additional power for the existing plant. The integration of dual-loop ORC systems with different critical temperature fluids into an operational facility is analyzed. High-temperature cycles use working fluids such as Toluene, MDM (octamethylcyclotrisiloxane), n-Nonane, and n-Octane, while refrigerants R236fa, R600a, and R124 are employed in the low-temperature cycles. The designed model demonstrates that up to 11.4 % of the plant's existing capacity can be added as extra power. The Toluene/R600a combination is identified as the best fluid pair, delivering the highest total net power output (653.4 kW), the lowest total cost rate (19.18 $/h), and the highest exergy efficiency (20.18 %). Optimization of the DORC system is performed using the NSGA-II in MATLAB. For the toluene/R600a pair, the optimization results show an increase of 13.52 % in the net power output and decrease of 1.48 % in the total cost rate, which is a significant improvement over the initial results.

This study presents development and application of a high-precision, multi-channel vibration measurement system to monitor structural behavior of Hagia Sophia Bell Tower. The research focused on assessing the dynamic characteristics of the tower, both through experimental measurements and numerical simulations. The study began by conducting an in-depth analysis of the tower's dynamic properties using finite element (FE) models, enabling the identification of experimental frequencies. Long-term monitoring was carried out using the newly developed vibration measurement system, complemented by a digital sensor that enabled simultaneous recording of environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. These parameters were continuously monitored to assess their potential impact on the frequencies and dynamic responses of the tower. Subsequently, regression analyses were performed to establish the relationship between environmental factors, and the tower's structural behavior. The experimental data were used to update FE models, ensuring a more accurate representation of the tower's actual behavior under varying conditions. Earthquake analyses were also conducted on the FE models to evaluate the seismic performance. The results of the study confirmed that vibration testing, combined with environmental monitoring, was a highly effective method for detecting changes in structural behavior. The findings highlighted the significant influence of environmental factors on the dynamic characteristics, with frequency variations reaching an average of 3.6%. These effects should be considered in ongoing monitoring. It was demonstrated that updating FE models reduced numerical errors below 2.5%. These findings gave importance of integrating long-term monitoring with FE model updating, providing more accurate protection and assessment strategies.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Performance analysis of piezoelectric-based energy harvesting in reinforced concrete buildings under seismic and live loads
Ergün, Mustafa; Uyar, Mehmet; Malgaca, Levent
The demand for autonomous energy solutions in seismic regions is increasing for the uninterrupted operation of structural health monitoring systems. In this context, energy harvesting systems offer a solution for low-power devices, especially in earthquake zones where external energy sources may be interrupted. This study evaluates the energy harvesting capacity of a piezoelectric energy harvesting mechanism placed at specific locations in the columns of a reinforced concrete structure, considering both earthquake and live load conditions. A smart building model is developed by placing sensor modules with piezoelectric material on the columns of a three-story reinforced concrete building. The finite element model of the smart building, which is formed by integrating various technologies and sensors, is created in ANSYS, and specific locations on the columns are selected as sensor points. Dynamic analyses are performed under earthquake conditions by considering seismic records from the Imperial Valley, Erzincan, and Darfield earthquakes. Experimental results of a smart structure with patched piezoelectric material are used to verify the simulation results. The voltage, current, and power responses obtained from the sensor points are examined with the payload effect placed at the end point of the sensor module. When the power values collected from the sensor points are compared, it can be said that the maximum power obtained from the smart building under both earthquake and live load is 0.355 W, while the minimum power value reaches 0.168 W. The results show that the energy harvesting mechanism can provide external power to support electronic devices in regions where earthquake effects are frequent and high. Thus, this study presents an innovative contribution to smart building systems by investigating the energy harvesting potential under earthquake and live loads in a reinforced concrete structure equipped with piezoelectric sensors. The model, validated with numerical and experimental analyses, proposes a sustainable energy source for structural health monitoring systems in seismic regions.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Seismic resilience of existing RC dual-system buildings during the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes: a case study
Tonyali, Zeliha; Kiral, Adnan; Ergun, Mustafa; Garcia, Reyes
This study investigates the seismic resilience of an existing reinforced concrete (RC) dual-system during the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. The shear wall-frame dual building was designed according to the Turkish guidelines (TEC 2007) and experienced negligible damage during the earthquakes, whereas all neighboring buildings collapsed. The case study building is modeled in SAP2000® adopting a lumped plasticity approach. The 3D building model was subsequently subjected to pushover and nonlinear time-history analyses (NTHAs) using real ground motions recorded during the first and strongest mainshock of the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes ((Formula presented.) = 7.7 Pazarcik earthquake). The results from the NTHAs indicate that the maximum inter-story drift (IDR) ratios on all floors of the case study building remained below the Immediate Occupancy performance level (IDR = 1.0%). Moreover, the dual-system building designed with TEC 2007 survived the earthquakes without damage, even when the design earthquake scenarios exceeded those considered in the new and more stringent TBEC 2018 (i.e. a 475 return period). The limited damage experienced by the RC dual-system building can be largely attributed to its high wall index (WI = 1.5% and 1.84%) and high average lateral stiffness index (H/T ≥45.3), which are above the minimum values (ρ = 0.6% and H/T ≥45) suggested in previous research. This study also highlights the critical importance of site-specific ground motion selection, particularly in the context of Hatay province, where the seismic demands exhibited significant variability and intensity.
