Terzi, Merve; Öner, Erdal; Uzun Yaylacı, Ecren; Oktay, Mine Gül; Yaylacı, Murat
Contact problems which concern the stress distribution resulting from the interaction between two elastic bodies have long been a focus of research. In the field of solid mechanics, they hold particular importance because loads are generally transmitted to deformable bodies through their points of contact. This study investigates the contact problem of a layered medium containing a homogeneous orthotropic layer and an isotropic half-plane using a multi-method approach. A rigid flat indenter is applied to the orthotropic layer with frictional effects neglected, while the influence of body forces in the orthotropic layer is taken into account. Key contact parameters such as the contact stress under the indenter, the initial separation load, and the point of initial separation are determined as part of the analysis. The study is structured into three main sections. In the first section, the problem is analytically examined based on classical elasticity theory. Within this framework, a singular integral equation governing the contact problem is derived and solved numerically. The second section presents a finite element analysis using ANSYS software to simulate the contact interaction and evaluate the stress distribution. In the third and final section, the problem is addressed through artificial neural network (ANN) techniques, offering a data-driven perspective. Ultimately, the results obtained from the analytical, numerical (FEM), and ANN-based methods are compared, showing excellent agreement across all approaches.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ4Association Between Health Literacy and Mediterranean Diet Adherence Among Adult Women in Türkiye
Çam, Alper Veli; Şik, Elif
Objective: Health literacy is widely recognized as an important determinant of informed health-related decision-making. However, evidence regarding whether health literacy translates into healthy eating behaviors, particularly adherence to the Mediterranean diet, remains limited. This study aimed to examine the association between health literacy levels and adherence to the Mediterranean diet among adult women living in Türkiye. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 400 women aged 18 years and older residing in Türkiye. Data were collected using a sociodemographic information form, the Turkish Health Literacy Scale–Short Form, and the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED). Health literacy levels were categorized as inadequate, problematic–limited, adequate, and excellent, while Mediterranean diet adherence was classified as low, moderate, or optimal. Ordinal logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between health literacy and adherence to the Mediterranean diet, adjusting for sociodemographic variables (age, education, income, and occupation). Findings: Among the participants, 25.3% had inadequate health literacy, 31.8% had problematic–limited health literacy, 34.0% had adequate health literacy, and 9.0% had excellent health literacy. Mediterranean diet adherence was low in 34.5% of participants, moderate in 52.3%, and optimal in 13.3%. The ordinal logistic regression analysis revealed that, after adjusting for sociodemographic variables, one dimension of health literacy (Cognitive Health Literacy) was significantly associated with Mediterranean diet adherence, whereas no significant association was observed for the other dimension. Conclusion: The findings suggest that certain dimensions of health literacy may be associated with adherence to the Mediterranean diet when sociodemographic factors are taken into account. These results highlight the importance of considering both individual knowledge and contextual factors in understanding dietary behavior. Future research should further explore the role of nutrition-specific literacy and structural determinants in shaping healthy eating practices.

Aldose reductase (ALR2), a key enzyme in the polyol pathway, plays a significant role in the onset and progression of diabetic complications, rendering it a critical pharmacological target. In this study, a novel series of twenty-four sulfonate ester-functionalized rhodanine derivatives (compounds 1–24) were rationally designed, synthesized via Knoevenagel condensation, and comprehensively evaluated for their inhibitory activity against ALR2. Spectroscopic and spectrometric methods confirmed the structural integrity of the synthesized compounds. In vitro enzyme inhibition assays revealed that all compounds acted as competitive inhibitors, with several analogues, particularly compounds 6 and 8, exhibiting stronger ALR2 inhibition (Ki = 0.43 µM and 0.48 µM, respectively) than the reference drug epalrestat (Ki = 0.98 µM). Structure–activity relationship (SAR) analysis highlighted the critical influence of para-substituted electron-donating (e.g., methyl) and electron-withdrawing (e.g., nitro, halogen) groups on binding potency. Molecular docking of the most potent inhibitor (compound 6) demonstrated a stable binding pose supported by key interactions, including hydrogen bonding with His110 and π–π stacking with Phe122. In silico ADME profiling confirmed favorable drug-likeness properties for all derivatives. Cytotoxicity studies on L929, A549, and RG-2 cell lines revealed that most compounds were less toxic than the reference drug at lower concentrations, with compound 8 showing a promising cytotoxic profile. These findings position rhodanine–sulfonate hybrids as promising scaffolds for the development of next-generation ALR2 inhibitors for the treatment of diabetic complications.

Psychological flexibility is a central construct in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and an important protective factor for mental health, particularly among individuals expected to function effectively under high stress and uncertainty, such as those in emergency aid and disaster management. Despite its relevance for this population, no Turkish version of the Comprehensive Assessment of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Processes (CompACT) had been available. The present study aimed to perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the English version of CompACT into Turkish and to evaluate its psychometric properties in emergency aid and disaster management students. The study was conducted in two phases: translation and cross-cultural adaptation, followed by psychometric evaluation in a sample of 302 students. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.21 and AMOS v.22 through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, reliability analyses, test-retest analysis, and correlational validity testing. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) showed that the CompACT consisted of three factors (Openness to Experience, Behavioral Awareness, and Valued Action) explaining 75.848% of the total variance, comprising 20 items. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that the three-factor model provided the best fit to the data (χ²/df = 2.590, CFI = 0.963, TLI = 0.956, RMSEA = 0.073). The scale demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency (overall alpha = 0.843) and temporal stability (test-retest r > 0.70 across all subscales), and its expected negative associations with the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (r = −0.365) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (r = −0.403) supported its criterion-related validity.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1The effect of cognitive strategy instruction enriched with active learning techniques on word problem-solving skills of students with learning disabilities
Filiz, Tunahan
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive strategy instruction (CSI) enriched with active learning (AL) techniques in teaching word problem solving to primary school students with learning disabilities, as well as to examine the overall instructional process. Word problem solving is the process of using contextual information from real-life or fictional situations to develop mathematical solutions. The research was designed with an embedded mixed-method model. The quantitative phase included 30 third-grade students with learning disabilities, while the qualitative phase involved six randomly selected students from the experimental group. Quantitative analyses revealed that students in the experimental group showed significantly higher achievement in problem-solving tests, indicating the positive impact of CSI enriched with AL techniques. Qualitative findings highlighted increased class participation, enhanced collaboration, and more positive attitudes toward mathematics. Furthermore, teacher and peer interactions supported the problem-solving process, and the use of tools promoting mathematical thinking strengthened performance. The results demonstrated that CSI enriched with AL techniques encouraged strategic thinking and the generation of alternative solutions in word problem solving. The study, limited to three learning outcomes within the third-grade mathematics curriculum in Turkey, suggests that teachers should adapt and implement such instructional approaches across other mathematical domains, given the students’ positive experiences and outcomes.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Identification of additional probiotic attributes in yeasts isolated from tarhana fermentation
Erdem, Belgin; Kaya, Halil İbrahim; Tulumoğlu, Şener; Coteli, Ebru; Şimşek, Ömer
Fermented foods constitute a valuable source of probiotics for both bacteria and yeasts. To date, however, there has been a limited amount of research conducted on Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Kazakhstania servazzi, Kluyveromyces marxianus and Torulaspora delbrueckii isolated from tarhana. The objective of the research is to identify additional probiotic characteristics other than the leavening activity exhibited by yeasts that were previously isolated from tarhana fermentation. In this study, yeasts were subjected to subsequent acid and bile salt tolerance, bile salt hydrolysis, antagonistic activity, aggregation activity (auto-aggregation and co-aggregation), cholesterol assimilation, folate production, biofilm production, and hemolysis activity. S. cerevisiae PCF122, S. cerevisiae PCF107, and S. cerevisiae PCF134 strains grew at pH 2 and 2,5 but remained at pH 3. Except for S. cerevisiae PCF115 and T. delbrueckii PCF150, all yeasts were found to be 0,5% and 1,0% oxalate tolerant. All yeasts hydrolyze oxalate (bile salt), but only S. cerevisiae PCF115 and T. delbrueckii PCF150 produced EPS. Yeasts also exhibited significant amounts of autoaggregation (46–87%). After 24 and 48 h incubation, all strains assimilated cholesterol at rates ranging from 10,4% to 87,5% and 10,6–91%, respectively. The highest folate production was determined at S. cerevisiae PCF108 (56 µg/mL) and the lowest was at S. cerevisiae PCF110 and K. marxianus PFC120 (18 µg/mL). In conclusion, yeasts that existed in tarhana fermentation showed cholesterol assimilation, folate production, and aggregation activity which are additional probiotic attributes that would have consumer health promotion, beside these yeast leaven the tarhana dough.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Artificial neural network modelling of reactive red 45 Azo dye removal by peroxi-electrocoagulation
Bayar, S.; Erdoğan, M.; Taşdemir, A.; Kaleli, A.; Paloluoglu, C.
In the present study, the Peroxi-electrocoagulation process was employed to remove chemical oxygen demand and the decolorization of reactive red 45 dye wastewater. This process offers several advantages, including the oxidation of dye molecules by hydroxyl radicals and coagulation through iron hydroxide precipitation. The reactor was equipped with six iron electrodes, providing a total surface area of 546 cm2. The effects of applied current (0.3–0.18 A), hydrogen peroxide concentration (100–700 mg/L), initial pH (2.5–5.0), and dye concentration (100–500 mg/L) on chemical oxygen demand and color removal were investigated. Optimum operational conditions were determined to be applied current of 0.150 (corresponding to current density of 0.27 mA/cm2), pH of 3.0, H2O2 concentration of 600 mg/L, and dye concentration of 200 mg/L. Under these conditions, COD and color efficiencies reached 83% and > 99%, respectively. The specific energy consumption under optimal conditions was 33.4 kWh/kg COD with 82.8% COD removal. The findings indicate that increasing the applied current and H2O2 concentration enhances removal performance up to a certain threshold, beyond which no significant improvement is observed. This suggests that the availability of electrogenerated reagents governs the overall reaction efficiency. Additionally, an artificial neural network model was developed to predict COD and color removal efficiencies. The network employed a 4:10:2 architecture and was trained using a backpropagation algorithm. Input variables included applied current, pH, H2O2 concentration, and dye concentration. The model exhibited high predictive accuracy, with R2 of 0.9782 for COD removal and 0.9579 for Color removal, confirming the effectiveness of the ANN in modeling.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Lightweight ASIP Design for Lattice-Based Post-quantum Cryptography Algorithms
Akçay, Latif; Yalçın, Berna Örs
Lattice-based cryptography (LBC) algorithms are considered suitable candidates for post-quantum cryptography (PQC), as they dominate the standardization process put forward by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Indeed, three of the four key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) algorithms in the third round of the process are based on computationally hard lattice problems. On the other hand, there is an urgent need for processor designs that can run PQC algorithms efficiently, especially for embedded systems. This study presents an application-specific instruction set processor (ASIP) design for the Kyber, Saber, and NewHope algorithms based on transport triggered architecture (TTA). Custom hardware accelerators are added to the baseline processor architecture for computation-intensive steps without applying any software optimization to the reference code. We compared FPGA and ASIC implementations of our design with the prominent RISC-V cores and instruction set extension studies in the literature. According to the results, the proposed design offers greater efficiency, better performance, and lower resource utilization than its competitors in most cases.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1A Multi-response Nonlinear Programming Model with an Inscribed Design to Optimize Bioreduction Conditions of (S)-phenyl (pyridin-2-yl)methanol by Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides N13
Özdemir, Akın; Şahin, Engin
Asymmetric bioreductions have the potential to synthesize chiral alcohols when catalyzed by biocatalysts. Nevertheless, the (S)-phenyl (pyridin-2-yl)methanol ((S)-2) analgesic synthesis poses significant challenges concerning unsatisfactory substrate amount and production method. Thus, this study proposes an inscribed design-focused multi-response nonlinear optimization model for the asymmetric reduction of the phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanone (1) with Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides N13 biocatalyst. From the novel inscribed design-focused multi-response nonlinear optimization model, optimization conditions of the reaction, such as pH = 6, temperature = 29 °C, incubation time = 53 h, and agitation speed = 153 rpm, were found. Also, the reaction conversion was predicted to be 99%, and the product of the enantiomeric excess (ee) was 98.4% under the obtained optimization conditions. (S)-2 was obtained with 99% ee, 99% conversion, and 98% yield while performing a validation experiment using the determined optimized conditions. In addition, 1 with the amount of 11.9 g was converted entirely to (S)-2 (11.79 g, 98% isolated yield) on a high gram scale. Also, this study is noted as the first example of the gram-scale production of (S)-2 using an optimization strategy and biocatalyst. Further, the applicability of the inscribed design-focused optimization model in biocatalytic reactions has been demonstrated and provides an effective process for the analgesic synthesis of (S)-2, which is a green, cost-effective method of producing chiral aryl heteroaryl methanol.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Evaluation of Dynamic and Fatigue Behavior of Damaged Steel Beams Strengthened with Different Types of Techniques and a New Strengthening Method Proposal
Ergün, Mustafa; Ateş, Şevket
In recent years, the use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers to strengthen fatigue-damaged steel beams has increased significantly as an alternative to traditional methods due to their easy application to the damaged area, lightweight, durability, and sustainability. In addition to all these positive contributions, there are some disadvantages, such as debonding damage under loading. These disadvantages encourage researchers to produce new materials or apply materials used for other purposes in other fields for fatigue damage. In this paper, an alternative new strengthening technique is mentioned to improve the dynamic and fatigue behavior of fatigue-damaged steel beams. This technique is a strengthening application made using epoxy-based filler and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer fabric. Numerical and experimental studies are carried out on fatigue-damaged steel beams by applying this new technique and using different carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, such as a single and double layer of fabric and a single plate layer. The most significant improvement in dynamic behavior occurred on the specimen, strengthened with this newly proposed technique. In contrast, the lowest increase occurs on the sample strengthened with a single layer of fabric. While the lowest increase arises on the sample strengthened with a single layer of fabric in terms of fatigue life, the most significant progress in fatigue behavior makes on the sample strengthened with a single plate layer. As a result of comparing the results, it is concluded that this new strengthening technique could be an essential alternative to the currently used strengthening methods.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ1A Novel Fuzzy Cumulative Sum Control Chart with an α-Level Cut Based on Trapezoidal Fuzzy Numbers for a Real Case Application
Özdemir, Akın; Uçurum, Metin; Serencam, Hüseyin
Statistical process control (SPC) is widely used to monitor production processes in many industries under certain conditions. When dealing with a quality characteristic for uncertainty, fuzzy numbers are used in the context of the statistical process control (SPC) to monitor a fuzzy production process. The aim of this paper is fourfold. One, a fuzzy X¯-R control chart with an α-level cut is used based on trapezoidal fuzzy numbers (TFNs) for detecting the large shifts in the fuzzy process mean. Second, a fuzzy cumulative sum (FCUSUM) control with an α-level cut based on TFNs is firstly developed for detecting the small shifts in the fuzzy process mean. Third, the fuzzy process capability indices (FPCIs) are presented to measure the fuzzy process performance. Finally, an ultra-fine calcite production process is controlled with both the fuzzy X¯-R control chart and the proposed FCUSUM control chart. The results of the fuzzy X¯-R control charts show that the fuzzy production process is in control, and large shifts in the fuzzy process mean were detected. On the other hand, the results of the FCUSUM charts show that the fuzzy production process is out of control, and small shifts in the fuzzy process mean were detected. FPCIs are also conducted, and the results of fuzzy Cpk indices show that the ultra-fine calcite production process is not capable of meeting specification limits.

- Kitap BölümüAçık Erişim2023Trajectory Tracking Control of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle Based on Fractional Order Terminal Sliding Mode Controller
Sekban, Hayriye Tuğba; Başçi, Abdullah
In this chapter, fractional order terminal sliding mode control (FOTSMC) method, which is a hybrid control approach, is used to improve the trajectory tracking control performance of an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). First, a kinematic controller design has been carried out to estimate the linear and angular velocities that will stabilize the vehicle asymptotically. Then, FOTSMC, which is a hybrid control method that combines the advantages of fractional control and terminal sliding mode control methods, is proposed to perform vehicle reference velocities tracking. In addition, terminal sliding mode control (TSMC) and sliding mode control (SMC) methods are used for trajectory tracking control of the same vehicle to demonstrate the performance of the proposed controller. Simulation results show that the proposed controller performs trajectory tracking with smaller error and lower amplitude chattering compared to TSMC and SMC.
