A comparative thermoeconomic analysis and optimization of two different combined cycles by utilizing waste heat source of an MSWPP

Ozahi, Emrah; Abusoglu, Aysegul; Tozlu, Alperen

In this paper, thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analysis as well as genetic algorithm optimization of two combined cycles, a gas turbine-organic Rankine cycle (GT-ORC) and a gas turbine-Kalina cycle (GT-KAL) are carried out. The novelty of this study is that the cycles are adapted to an actual solid waste power plant to generate additional power from the exhaust gas. Thus, the power generation capacity of the actual power plant can be raised by using the combined cycle. Due to this reason, besides the thermodynamic analysis of the cycles, thermoeconomic analyses and optimizations are also very important in order to improve the actual system capacity. The net power output of GT-ORC and GT-KAL are found to be 1.51 MW and 1.59 MW, respectively. The results obtained are seen to be reasonable when compared to the net power output of the power plant (5.66 MW). Another originality of this study is that the thermoeconomic results are improved by utilizing a multi-objective optimization method namely non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm method (NSGA-II). Thus, the two objectives, total power output and the total cost rate, at the design stage of the cycles are optimized and enhanced. Due to the optimization results, it is found that the net power output of the GT-ORC and GT-KAL are increased by 11.34% and 0.99%, respectively, while the total cost rates are decreased by 18.59% and 1.31%, respectively. GT-ORC with the net power output of 1.70 MW is seen to be more efficient as compared to GT-KAL which produces a net power output of 1.61 MW. However, the total and the capital cost rates of GT-ORC are found to be higher than those of GT-KAL.

Temperature dependent current- and capacitance-voltage characteristics of W/n-Si structures with two-dimensional WS2 and three-dimensional WO3 interfaces deposited by RF sputtering technique

    Baltakesmez, A.; Tekmen, S.; Güzeldir, B.

In this study, tungsten disulfide (WS2) and tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films are deposited on n-Si by RF sputtering technique. The optical, morphological and structural characteristics of these films are investigated. The XRD patterns showed that highly crystallinity have been obtained with dominant characteristic diffraction peaks of the WS2 and WO3. The SEM images show that these films are nearly uniform and covered all surface of substrates. Furthermore, the WS2 film has two-dimensional (2D) vertical layers while the WO3 has three-dimensional (3D) structure. From the XPS spectra, it revealed that the peaks confirmed the formation of WS2 and WO3 phases. The Raman spectra presented that different vibrational modes and phases are characteristics of the WS2 and WO3 thin films. Electrical properties of W/n-Si metal-semiconductor (MS) and W/WS2/n-Si and W/WO3/n-Si metal-interfacial layer-semiconductor (MIS) diodes are investigated using current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics at various temperatures. It was found that I-V and C-V characteristics are strongly dependent on temperature and the interfacial WS2 and WO3 layers are significant roles for the electrical properties of W/WS2/n-Si and W/WO3/n-Si devices.

Study on the radiation attenuation properties of locally available bees-wax as a tissue equivalent bolus material in radiotherapy

Islam, Sazirul; Mahmoud, K.A.; Sayyed, M.I.; Alim, Bünyamin; Rahman, Md.M.; Mollah, A.S.

In radiation therapy field, bolus material is frequently utilized when treating different areas of a patient, like at the ears or nose, and to provide build-up of dose to the skin surface. The bolus material must be cost effective, suitably flexible to conform to the surface of the patient, and most importantly should be tissue equivalent. The main objective of this work was to estimate the photon attenuation properties of locally available bees-wax and to assess the feasibility of using this bees-wax as a bolus material practice for treatment of cancer patient. The mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ) values have been calculated by using MCNP5 simulation code over the wide range of photon energy (0.015–10 MeV). Some related parameters such as the effective atomic number and the mean free path were also calculated to understand the photon attenuation ability of the investigated bolus material. The attenuation properties were also computed for water, tissue and commercial bolus materials for comparison. Evaluation of the results showed that the radiation attenuation properties of locally available bees-wax have a good similarity to water/tissue. Referring to the results of this study, it is proposed that locally available bees-wax is a suitable substance to be used as bolus material practice for treat of cancer patient.

Microbiological, physicochemical, textural characteristics and oxidative stability of butter produced from high-pressure homogenisation treated cream at different pressures

    Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin

Microbiological, physicochemical, and textural characteristics, and oxidative stability was investigated of butter produced from raw cream treated with high-pressure homogenisation (HPH) at 0 (control), 10, 20, 30, 50, or 70 MPa. HPH treatment of cream increased lightness and decreased yellowness of butter. Firmness of all butter samples was between 97 (control) and 380 N (70 MPa). HPH decreased the spreadability of butter dependent on increasing pressure. A monomodal fat particle size distribution was determined in all butter samples; D[3.2] ranged from 25.25 to 125.5 μm and HPH decreased average particle size compared with the control. The induction time of butter ranged from 27.40 (control) to 39.61 h (70 MPa). Above 50 MPa, Salmonella, and yeast and moulds were completely inactivated whilst coliforms and staphylococci were not detected in butter from HPH treated cream at 70 MPa, indicating that HPH can improve the microbial quality of butter produced from raw cream.

The comparison of levitation and lateral force of bulk and cut-pasted bulk GdBCO samples at different temperatures

Güner, Sait Barış; Abdioğlu, Murat; Öztürk, Kemal; Çelik, Şükrü

In this work, in the first time, we have investigated the levitation and lateral force properties of bulk and cut-pasted bulk GdBCO samples at different temperatures and different cooling heights (CH) to determine the effect of cut-pasted process on the magnetic levitation force behaviour. The measurements of superconducting characteristics indicated that the attractive and repulsive force values of cut-pasted GdBCO sample are slightly lesser than those of GdBCO bulk sample. The maximum repulsive and attractive force values obtained as 15.45 N and −4.56 N for GdBCO bulk and as 14.78 N and −3.92 N for cut-pasted GdBCO samples at 37 K. Although there are many fabrication methods as melt-textured growth (MTG), top seeded infiltration growth (TSIG) and TSMG to produce large HTS samples, the desired large sample size and the sample shape compatible with the superconducting magnetic bearing systems are not still sufficient for the technological applications. In this study, the performed cut-pasted process and obtained magnetic levitation force data can be using for the increment sample size and the desired sample shape in the needed different geometry and size for superconducting magnetic bearing systems.

MoO3 reinforced Ultra high molecular weight PE for neutrons shielding applications

Sayyed, M.I.; Abdalsalam, Alyaa H.; Taki, Malaa M.; Mhareb, M.H.A.; Alim, Bünyamin; Baltakesmez, Ali; Şakar, Erdem

Structural, Morphological and neutron attenuation properties of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced with molybdenum trioxide composite material obtained by solid state mixing of pellets and powder components via hot pressing have been studied. In this work, Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene and MoO3 has been utilized with different concentration using a hot compression iron mold. The changes in the microstructure of the prepared polymer and its particulate composites were evaluated by SEM. In order to investigate the quantitative of all elements used in these samples, we utilized Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to present the profiles of synthesized samples which show a clear peaks C (carbon), and Mo (Molybdenum). The X-ray diffraction of all samples was examined to study the modification of the phase and lattice for UHMWPE before and after the addition of molybdenum trioxide (MoO3). Raman analysis was utilized to explore the crystallinity, molecular interactions, phase, polymorphy, and chemical structure. This technique is based on non-destructive interaction between light with the chemical bonds inside a material. The Raman spectrum for the current work presented within the range of 150–1600 cm−1. In order to understand the neutron shielding performance for the fabricated UHMWPE with different concentrations of MoO3, 241Am/Be fast neutron source was used to determine the fast neutron radiation equivalent dose rate. The background absorbed dose rate was measured as 0.98 (±0.017) (μSv/h). It was seen that the addition of MoO3 into the UHMWPE enhances the neutron shielding. The dose released from the source was absorbed by 7.71 (±1.3) %, 18.48 (±2.9) %, 22.26 (±2.4) %, 24.07 (±1.8) % and 26.17 (±1.3) % from UHMWPE with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5% of MoO3 respectively. Additionally, GEANT4 10.02. p01 version was used to calculate total macroscopic cross-sections (TMCS) for the MoO3 doped UHMWPE. According to the results obtained from GEANT4, it was observed that the TMCS values of the UHMWPE increase with increment of the mole fraction of the MoO3 in the structure of UHMWPE examined and that the 5.0% MoO3 sample has the best neutron shielding ability.”

Superconducting and levitation force characterisation of pyrene added MgB2 bulk superconductors

Erdem, Ozge; Guner, Sait Baris; Celik, Sukru; Kucukomeroglu, Tayfur

This research presents the influence of pyrene (C16H10) addition (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 wt%) on the superconducting properties of bulk MgB2. For C16H10 added MgB2 samples, a shrinkage in a-lattice parameters was determined, whereas c-lattice parameters remained practically unchanged. The (1 1 0) peak observed at 2θ ≈ 59.9◦ slightly shifted to higher angles, the lattice strain increased and the crystallite size reduced after C16H10 addition. By virtue of induced stronger pinning force, the in-field critical current density (Jc) increased after C16H10 addition. The Jc value at 20 K and 4 T was obtained about two times higher (8.54 × 103 A/cm2) for 4 wt% C16H10 added MgB2 sample than that of the pure one. In addition, the variation of levitation force characteristic of MgB2 with increasing C16H10 content was determined at 20, 25 and 30 K. The best vertical levitation force performance in zero-field-cooled regime was obtained as 7.09 N/g at 20 K for 4 wt% C16H10 added MgB2 sample with 13 mm in diameter.

Efil, Esra; Kaymak, Nuriye; Seven, Elanur; Orhan, Elif Oz; Bayram, Ozkan; Ocak, Sema Bilge; Tataroglu, Adem

The present study's main purpose is to determine the current-voltage (I–V) performance of Graphene (Gr) based hetero nanostructure produced on Al2O3/p-Si. Graphene synthesis was carried out using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique on Copper (Cu) foils used as a metal catalyst and transferred onto Al2O3/p-Si using the conventional transfer method. The I–V characteristics of this structure were measured in the dark environment, and the electrical properties of the Gr/Si structure were characterized at room temperature. The rectifying ratio (RR) of the structure was found to be about 103 at ± 3 V. The electrical properties of ideality factor (n), series resistance (Rs), and barrier height (Φb) were examined by using the theory of Thermionic Emission (TE), Norde's method, and Cheung's method. The values of Φb, which were calculated using Norde's method, Cheung's method, and the theory of thermionic emission (TE), were found to be 0.69 eV, 0.71 eV, and 0.68 eV, respectively. The ideality factor was found to be approximately 3.89 according to the theory of TE. The values of series resistance were also determined using the Norde's method and Cheung's two different parameters (dV/dln(I) and H(I)) found to be 9.60 kΩ, 9.12 kΩ, and 5.94 kΩ, respectively.

Simulation and optimization of gamma-ray linear attenuation coefficients of barite concrete shields

    Şensoy, A.T.; Gökçe, H.S.

The remarkable increment in radioactivity risks of today's industrial world is required to the efficient design of shielding structures. In the present study, the optimal design parameters of barite concrete shields for providing the highest gamma radiation shielding capability were researched by using a hybrid technique of the Box-Behnken Design based response surface method and Particle Swarm Optimization. Barite aggregate fraction, water-to-cement ratio and cement content of the shields were limited as 0:100 (by weight), 0.30:0.70 (by weight) and 200:600 (kg/m3) in the optimization problem, respectively. The regression equation derived from the regression learning process presented an excellent correlation to define the XCOM linear attenuation coefficients. A nonlinear response surface fitted to the regression equation was used as the validation of the PSO results obtained from MATLAB. The results of this study have shown that the proposed method provides satisfactory predictions for the barite concrete radiation-shielding capability depending on the design parameters. In addition, it was found that the linear attenuation coefficient could be increased by 102% by the design of the best shield according to the poorest mixture.

Determination of magnetic levitation force properties of bulk MgB2 for different permanent magnetic guideways in different cooling heights

Savaskan, Burcu; Abdioglu, Murat; Ozturk, Kemal

In our study as different from the literature, the magnetic levitation force between a bulk MgB2 and two different permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) arrangements, which are Halbach and Conventional PMGs, were investigated in different cooling heights (CHs) and Field-Cooled (FC) condition at the temperatures of 37 K and 33 K. The cylindrical bulk MgB2 superconductor was fabricated by in-situ solid state reaction process with the diameter of 18 mm and the height of 5 mm. The XRD data indicates well developed MgB2 phase and the Jc value was obtained as 68 kA/cm2 at 30 K in the self-field. Experimental results show that MgB2 bulk above the Halbach PMG can exhibit better load capability at all the cooling heights between the bulk MgB2 and the PMG due to a more suitable magnetic field distribution. The maximum levitation force for Halbach PMG corresponds to 16.86 N whereas the conventional PMG shows 9.02 N at 37 K in cooling height of 77 mm. Additionally, the maximum levitation force increases while the CH increases because flux exclusion is more effective for larger CHs. It is considered that the experimental results obtained in study are very useful for future Maglev applications, because there are limited number of studies on magnetic levitation force of MgB2 bulk for different MgB2-PMG arrangements.

Phy-X / PSD: Development of a user friendly online software for calculation of parameters relevant to radiation shielding and dosimetry

Şakar, Erdem; Özpolat, Özgür Fırat; Alım, Bünyamin; Sayyed, M.I.; Kurudirek, Murat

A user friendly online Photon Shielding and Dosimetry (PSD) software available at https://phy-x.net/PSD has been developed for calculation of parameters relevant to shielding and dosimetry. These parameters include linear and mass attenuation coefficients (LAC, MAC), half and tenth value layers (HVL, TVL), mean free path (MFP), effective atomic number and electron density (Zeff, Neff), effective conductivity (Ceff) energy absorption and exposure buildup factors (EABF, EBF). The software can generate data on shielding parameters in the continuous energy region (1 keV-100 GeV). Also, some well-known radioactive sources (22Na, 55Fe, 60Co, 109Cd, 131I, 133Ba, 137Cs, 152Eu and 241Am) along with their energies and some characteristic (K-shell) X-ray energies of Cu, Rb, Mo, Ag, Ba and Tb elements are available in the software and can be selected by the user. Thus, one can obtain the shielding parameters at photon energies available for the predefined energies. Moreover, another parameter relevant to shielding i.e. the fast neutron removal cross section (FNRCS) can be calculated for a compound or a mixture using this software. The software is freely available online after having registered to the Phy-X platform.

Thin films derived from Zn(Al)O mixed metal oxides nanoparticles dispersed in polyethylene glycol: Structural, morphological and optical properties

El Hassani, Kaoutar; Bayram, Ozkan; Anouar, Abdellah; Mavi, Ahmet

In this study, Zn(Al)O thin films were produced using colloidal solution of Zn(Al)O nanoparticles dispersed in polyethylene glycol (PEG). Zn(Al)O mixed metal oxides were obtained by a simple pyrolysis of Zn–Al containing layered double hydroxide materials with different Al content. Survey of textural analysis of Zn(Al)O mixed oxides displayed characteristic peaks of ZnO structure. The calculated ratios of lattice parameters c/a were found to be 1.61 and 1.60 for 3-ZAO and 5-ZAO, respectively. The optical transmittance of the prepared thin films was not significantly affected by the increase in Al content; however, this increase changed the optical band gap from 3.27 eV to 3.33 eV. ZAO thin films, which are both cost-effective with good optical properties, have the potential to be an alternative to those used in many optical devices lately.

Experimental investigation of radiation shielding performances of some important AISI-coded stainless steels: Part I

Alım, Bünyamin; Şakar, E.; Baltakesmez, Ali; Han, İbrahim; Sayyed, M.I.; Demir, Lütfü

The investigation of radiation shielding performances of AISI-302, 304, 321 and 430 stainless steels which have wide range of application because of their superior mechanical properties, temperature and corrosion resistances was aimed in this study. In accordance with this purpose, photon-shielding parameters of these stainless steels were calculated both experimentally and theoretically. These parameters calculated are linear attenuation coefficient, mass attenuation coefficient, mean free path, half-value layer, quarter-value layer, tenth-value layer, total atomic cross-section, total electronic cross-section, effective atomic number, effective electron number and effective conductivity. They were experimentally measured at twenty-three different energies in the range 22 keV and 1333 keV. The photon energies were obtained from seven different radioactive sources (22Na, 60Co, 241Am, 109Cd, 137Cs, 152Eu and 133Ba). The Si(Li) and NaI(Tl) detectors were separately used taking into account of energy-efficient regions to counting process at narrow-beam transmission geometry. In addition, all these parameters were computed at the 15 keV‒15 MeV wide energy range, theoretically. In order to make a satisfying assessment about radiation shielding capabilities of AISI 302, 304, 321 and 430 alloys, all calculations were also made for ordinary, steel-scrap and steel-magnetite concretes (Fe-based steel concretes) that are most commonly used as shielding material in many nuclear applications. According to the results obtained, it was observed that the radiation shielding performances of AISI 300 austenitic stainless steel series with containing Ni are superior to that of both AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel and examined concretes.

Comparison of phenol removal with ozonation in jet loop reactor and bubble column

Barlak, Melahat Semin; Degermenci, Nejdet; Cengiz, Ibrahim; Ucun Özel, Handan; Yildiz, Ergun

This study aimed to remove phenol with ozonation in a jet loop reactor (JLR) and a bubble column (BC). In the first stage of the study, the mass transfer properties of JLR were determined and superiority over BC reactors were shown, and in the second stage, these reactors were used in phenol removal studies. At the same conditions, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient of JLR was 0.540 min-1, while this value was determined as 0.246 min-1 in the BC reactor. In phenol removal, the effects of initial phenol concentration, ozone dosage and pH on phenol and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were determined for both JLR and BC. While the pseudo-first rate constant for phenol removal in JLR at 221 mg/min ozone dosage was 0.1756 min-1, this value was only calculated as 0.1157 min-1 in the BC reactor. As a result, it has been shown that JLRs can achieve higher ozone gas transfer with lower energy consumption and perform more effective phenol and COD removal than BC reactors, especially at low pH and high ozone dosages.

Characterisation of physicochemical, microbiological, thermal, oxidation properties and fatty acid composition of butter produced from thermosonicated cream

    Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin

The effects of thermosonication of cream on physicochemical, microbiological, thermal, oxidation properties and fatty acid composition of butter were determined. Butter samples were produced from cream thermosonicated (TS) for 5, 10, or 15 min and from raw (R) and pasteurised (P) cream as controls. Thermosonication decreased moisture content, water activity, and pH of samples when compared with control groups. Mean particle size (D [3.2]) values of TS samples were lower than the R and P samples. Thermosonication improved spreadability compared with that of butter from pasteurised cream. Oxidative stability (induction time) of TS samples was lower than R, but higher than P. Two melting peaks were determined; in all samples, the Tonset of the first peak ranged from 11.39 to 11.93 °C, and the Tpeak was between 14.01 and 14.14 °C. Thermosonication significantly reduced total bacteria count and can improve spreadability, oxidative stability, and microbial safety of butter samples.

Impact of glucan type exopolysaccharide (EPS) production on technological characteristics of sourdough bread

İspirli, Hümeyra; Özmen, D.; Yılmaz, Mustafa Tahsin; Sağdıç, O.; Dertli, Enes

In this study, technological role of α-glucan with (α1-3) and (α1-6) glycosidic linkages produced by Lactobacillus reuteri E81 on sourdough rheology and bread texture was investigated. To achieve this, a glucan deficient ΔgtfA mutant was produced by the deletion of the glucansucrase gene from strain E81. By comparison of glucan-positive and glucan-negative strains for rheological properties of sourdough revealed that in situ α-glucan production resulted in higher elasticity in sourdough. However, no additional effect of in situ glucan on textural characteristics of bread was observed although addition of glucan ex situ at 0.09% level significantly decreased bread hardness. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images of lyophilized sourdoughs confirmed association of glucan and starch granules forming a film like structure in sourdough.

Gamma ray and neutron shielding characteristics of polypropylene fiber-reinforced heavyweight concrete exposed to high temperatures

    Demir, İ.; Gümüş, M.; Gökçe, H.S.

The residual properties of shielding structures need to be redefined after exposure to elevated temperatures due to their probable radiological hazards on biodiversity. In this study, the effect of high temperatures on mechanical, gamma ray and neutron attenuation characteristics was determined for limestone, barite and siderite concrete shields reinforced with polypropylene fiber. The increase in temperature up to 600 °C reduced the ultrasonic pulse velocity and compressive strength values of these shields by 59% and 62%, respectively. A good linear correlation (R2 ≥ 0.97) was found between these values. While the gamma ray linear attenuation coefficients increased by 9% for barite concrete, and reduced by 15% for normal concrete and by 17% for siderite concrete at 600 °C, trivial fluctuations (from −1% to +7%) were observed at 300 °C. The neutron attenuation factors of these shields gradually reduced up to 31% with the increase of temperature. The performance of siderite concrete was found to be slightly better than that of barite concrete in terms of strength and neutron shielding characteristics. With the satisfactory linear attenuation coefficients at all energy levels of gamma rays, barite concrete seems to be the most suitable concrete type under high temperature risks.

Natural radioactivity of barite concrete shields containing commonly used supplementary materials

    Gökçe, H.S.; Canbaz Öztürk, B.; Çam, N.F.; Andiç-Çakır, Ö.

The recycling of hazardous materials within new composites has a sustainable importance as it contributes on the reduction of high radionuclide concentrations. In this study, the effect of cementitious materials i.e. viscosity modifier, silica fume and fly ash on the 226Ra, 232Th and 40K activity levels of barite concrete shields was researched by using different mixing compositions in terms of binder content, w/b ratio and the amount of supplementary cementitious materials. In comparison to cement, silica fume and fly ash used in the production of concrete shields were found to have significantly higher activity levels of 40K, as well as 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. The 226Ra, 232Th and 40K activity levels of concrete shields range between 2.2 and 20.7 Bq kg−1; 2.6 and 7.0 Bq kg−1; 51.5 and 89.3 Bq kg−1, respectively. These activity values were found similar or less than those of building materials in the world. These satisfactory results are mostly caused by the barite source which has lower radioactivity levels. The concrete mixture details used in the study caused significant variation in the natural radioactivity of barite concrete shields. The introduction of silica fume which has high 40K activity levels and fly ash with high 226Ra, 232Th and 40K activity levels compared to cement and barite aggregate, significantly increased the radiological hazard parameters, although all results were found to be below the limits recommended by international reports. In conclusion, 226Ra activity levels of the concrete shields were significantly increased (up to 8.4 times) by the variation of mix design parameters used in comparison with concrete mixtures that have the least 226Ra activity level. The 232Th and 40K activity levels were as well increased in relatively less amounts (1.7 and 0.73 times higher, respectively).

Bifidogenic effect and in vitro immunomodulatory roles of melibiose-derived oligosaccharides produced by the acceptor reaction of glucansucrase E81

İspirli, Hümeyra; Kaya, Yasemin; Dertli, Enes

Glucansucrases are responsible for the production of α-glucans using sucrose as the substrate. Glucansucrases may also produce different oligosaccharides by transferring the glucose moiety from sucrose to a variety carbohydrates acting as acceptor nucleophile. In this study, melibiose-derived oligosaccharides were produced by the glucansucrase from Lactobacillus reuteri E81 expressed without the N-terminal region (GtfA-ΔN). The reaction products were characterized by TLC, LC-MS and NMR analysis and it was found that GtfA-ΔN synthesized melibiose-derived oligosaccharides (DP3 and DP4) by adding glucose units through alpha 1->3 or 1->6 glycosidic bond. The functional characteristics of these melibiose-derived oligosaccharides were determined by testing the immune-modulatory functions in HT-29 cells and testing their growth promoting effects for important probiotic and pathogenic strains. The melibiose-derived oligosaccharides triggered the production of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α depending on their concentrations. Finally, melibiose-derived oligosaccharides showed bifidogenic effect as potential prebiotics.

Optimization of an adapted Kalina cycle to an actual municipal solid waste power plant by using NSGA-II method

    Özahi, Emrah; Tozlu, Alperen

In this paper thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses and even optimization of a Kalina cycle (KC) which is adapted to an actual solid waste power plant with a 5.66 MW installed capacity are presented as an alternative solution which is utilized to produce additional power from the exhaust gas of the plant. Up to now there is almost no study related with an adapted KC to a typical municipal solid waste power plant, and also no study based on an optimization, thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses of such a system together. All these facts show the novelty of this study. Herein the waste heat with a temperature of 566 °C is utilized by the adapted KC. According to the analyses of the first and second law of thermodynamics on the system, it is deduced that the electricity of 954.6 kW can be produced with the exergy efficiency of 24.15%. Furthermore, this power production can be improved by using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm method (NSGA-II) in MATLAB software program. According to the optimization study, the deviations of the net power output and the total cost rate are found to be +3.62% and −1.47 $/h, respectively for the cycle.
