Gursoy, Recep; Ziyagil, Mehmet Akif; Sahin, Suleyman; Dane, Senol
Handedness is a preference for the use of one of the right- or the left-hands. In the large majority of right-handers, speech is controlled by the left side of the brain. Also, the right hemisphere of the brain is usually specialized for recognizing and remembering faces and understanding relationships in space. We live in a right-handed world and that left-handers have an inherent disadvantage in using tools designed for right-handers. Left-handed persons are believed to have better developed motor, attentional and spatial functions. Some studies have explored a possible correlation between left-handedness and enhanced performance in specific sports such as baseball, cricket, fencing, soccer and tennis. The rate of the left-handed boxers was higher compared to the right-handed ones in the National Road Sport Men Boxing Club in Turkey. These results may be associated with two suggestions: 1. the left-handed subjects have an intrinsic advantage over right-handers due to superior spatio-motor skills, 2. advantage in the left-handed boxer and the left-handed other athletes may result from the nature of the game (boxing) or frequency-dependent strategic advantage.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ1The Effect of pH and Temperature on Cabbage Volatiles During Storage
Akpolat, Hacer; Barringer, Sheryl Ann
During storage of shredded cabbage, characteristic sulfurous volatile compounds are formed affecting cabbage aroma both negatively and positively. Selected ion flow tube-mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) was used to measure the concentration of cabbage volatiles during storage. The volatile levels of cabbage samples were measured at pH 3.3 to 7.4 at 4 degrees C for 14d, and pH 3.3 at 25 degrees C for 5d in order to determine the effect of pH and temperature. Aroma intensity, best aroma, freshness, and off odor were evaluated in a sensory test of the samples at 4 degrees C. The desirable volatile allyl isothiocyanate was lower in high pH samples (pH 7.4 and 6.4), whereas higher concentrations were detected in low pH samples (pH 3.3 and 4.6). Lipoxygenase volatiles, which produce a fresh green and leafy aroma in cabbage, were generated in very low amounts at any pH value. High pH samples generated significantly higher concentrations of off odors such as dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, and methanethiol. Sensory tests showed that higher pH samples had significantly stronger off odor and lower desirable cabbage aroma than lower pH samples. Thus, sensory results matched the volatile results in that samples at higher pH levels formed the highest amount of undesirable volatiles and the least amount of desirable volatiles. Storage at 25 degrees C produced similar concentrations of allyl isothiocyanate, but significantly higher levels of off odors, than at 4 degrees C. Shredded cabbage products should be stored in low pH dressings to minimize formation of off odors and maximize formation of characteristic, desirable cabbage odor. Practical Application Low pH samples formed fewer undesirable, and more desirable volatile compounds overall. The natural pH of cabbage is around 6.4, and at this pH, higher concentrations of off odors are formed during storage. Thus, low pH salad dressings are more suitable for storage of ready-to-eat cabbage products in terms of sensory quality, and high temperature is not suitable for cabbage storage, since undesirable aroma compound formation is high, desirable aroma loss occurs quickly, and microbial growth occurs at a very early stage of storage.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ1Assessment of Alternative Segregation Test Methods for Self-Consolidating Heavyweight Concrete
Gökçe, H. Suleyman; Aksan, Umut; Andiç-Çakir, Ozge
This investigation is focused on the use of alternative segregation test methods on high-performance self-consolidating heavyweight concrete. Many segregation test methods have been developed by researchers up to now; however, the disadvantages of these methods, such as being time-consuming, the requirement of excessive labor, and the lack of precision, cannot ensure their worldwide prevalence. In the study, the segregation limitations stated in various test methods, that is, the column test, density variation method, and 3-compartment sieve test, were evaluated on self-consolidating heavyweight concrete produced with barite aggregate. For this purpose, in total, eight self-consolidating heavyweight concrete mixtures designed in two water/binder ratios were prepared by replacing viscosity modifier, silica fume, and fly ash with ordinary Portland cement in different amounts. The mixtures were constituted in satisfactory segregation grades, allowing researchers to evaluate the relationship between those methods. The segregation coefficient limits of the column test, density variation method, and 3-compartment sieve test are recommended as 7%, 1%, and 6.3% for the self-consolidating heavyweight concrete mixtures tested in the study.

Yilmaz, Tuncer; Ag, Aliriza
Stock market liquidity is a key indicator of market functionality, stability and investor sentiment. Furthermore, stock market liquidity serves as a crucial indicator for gauging the depth of liquidity and market dynamics in money and capital markets. In light of the pivotal role of stock market liquidity, this article seeks to examine the dynamic influence of select macroeconomic indicators pertaining to monetary, fiscal, and general economic outlook on stock market liquidity in both the long and short run. To this end, the symmetric ARDL method is employed. The ARDL findings indicate that interest rate, exchange rate, central government expenditures, oil, industrial production index, and consumer price index exert a discernible impact on stock market liquidity.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023The success of critical velocity protocol on predicting 10000 meters running performance
Çabuk, Baris; Demirarar, Onur; Cin, Merve; Çabuk, Refik; Özçaldiran, Bahtiyar
Background and Study Aim The study aims to evaluate which of the critical velocity (CV) estimates of the three widely used models and the best-fit model successfully predict the running performance of 10000 meters. Material and Methods The group of participants in this study consisted of 11 British endurance athletes. The CV estimations were obtained from the models with the athletes' running velocity and exhaustion times of 1500, 3000, and 5000 meters (m). The information was taken from a website where the results of the British athletes are recorded. In terms of selecting endurance athletes, the data of the athletes who ran 1500 m, 3000 m, 5000 m, and 10000 m in the same two years were included in this study. By fitting the data into mathematical models, the CV estimates of the three mathematical models and the individual best-fit model were compared with the 10000 m running velocity. The CV estimates were obtained by fitting the relevant data on the running velocity, exhaustion time, and running distance of the three running distances of athletes to each of the three mathematical models. Results 10000 m running velocity and times of the athletes corresponded to 19.65 +/- 1.26 km/h and 30.4 +/- 1.94 minutes, respectively. The CV values obtained from the three mathematical models and 10000 m running velocity were similar (p > 0.05). Although the lowest total standard error levels were obtained with the best individual fit method, the 10000 m running velocity was overestimated (p < 0.05). Conclusions Three mathematical models predicted 10000 meters of race velocity when an exhaustion interval between 2-15 minutes was used. Even though the mathematically most valid CV value was obtained with the best individual fit method, it overestimated the 10000 m running velocity. When comparing the values of CV and the velocity of running 10,000 meters, our study suggests using the model. This is because the model has the smallest effect size, and there is no statistically significant difference in the total standard error level between the model and the best-fit model.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Physical Activity, Technology Use, and AI Anxiety Among University Students: Associations With Academic Integrity Attitudes
Yaman, Menzure Sibel; Çakir, Zekai; Çatikkas, Fatih; Türkmen, Mutlu; Sengönül, Abdullah; Gönen, Mevlut; Öktem, Tuncay; Güzel, Sema; Yel, Kader
This study examined the associations between university students' physical activity, technology use habits, and anxiety related to artificial intelligence (AI) within an academic integrity context. Since the study did not measure verified misconduct, academic integrity was conceptualised as attitudes and self-reported behaviours. Perceptions of uncited AI use and citation practices were therefore defined as the primary integrity-related outcomes. A survey was completed by 1,018 students (TUHS, AIAS), complemented by focus group interviews with 25 participants. Quantitative analyses (t-tests, ANOVA, regression) indicated that regular physical activity was associated with lower self-reported technology dependence and lower AI anxiety. Non-active female students and younger students (18-22) recorded the highest scores. Daily internet use exceeding six hours and social media-focused engagement were associated with greater dependence and anxiety. Qualitative findings provided explanatory depth: physically active students described a more routine, focused, and self-regulated approach, while inactive students emphasised longer screen time, distraction, and stress. These patterns were consistent with the quantitative results. Overall, the findings suggest that balanced technology use, physical activity, and clear ethical awareness (e.g., citation behaviour) are associated with lower technology dependence and AI anxiety. Integrating digital literacy and ethics training with programmes that encourage physical activity may support responsible technology use and integrity-related awareness in higher education. Findings are interpreted as patterns of co-occurrence rather than causal effects, because the cross-sectional design does not allow directionality.

Akgül, Halil Ibrahim; Sengül, Mustafa; Ürkek, Bayram; Kotan, Tuba Erkaya; Gürbüz, Zeynep
The goal of this study was to determine some physicochemical and microbiological properties of Erzurum butter. Random samples (n = 30) were collected from different retail markets throughout Erzurum province. The pH, acidity, and melting point values of samples were 3.88, 0.47%, and 30.03 degrees C, respectively. The salt, fat, and moisture values of some samples (sample no 1, 14, and 18) were not harmony with Turkish Food Codex. The highest and lowest peroxide, iodine, saponification, Reichert-Meissl (RM), and Polenske values were found to be in the range of 0-0.51 mEqO2/kg, 22.97-38.64, 195.45-228.54, 17.08-30.-56, and 0.72-1.80, respectively. The refractive index value (RI) was changed from 1.4591 to 1.4620. Total coliforms, aerobic mesophilic bacteria (TAMB), lactic acid bacteria (cultured in MRS and M17), and mould and yeasts mean counts were 1.07 log CFU g-1, 6.79 log CFU g-1, 6.45 log CFU g-1, 6.76 log CFU g-1, and 5.33 log CFU g-1, respectively. There were high differences in physicochemical and microbiological properties of butter might be attributed to a non-standard production process as well as non-standard raw material. In sum, the sanitation and storage conditions should be improved from production to consumption to improve the butter quality.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Beneficial Effect of Atomoxetine Treatment on Scopolamine-Induced Cognitive Impairments and Molecular Changes in Rats
Yucel, Nazli Turan; Ucel, Umut Irfan; Kandemir, Ummuhan; Can, Ozgur Devrim
Objective: Atomoxetine is a noradrenaline re-uptake inhibitory drug that is currently used in the pharmacological treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children, adolescents, and adults. Based on the findings that noradrenergic system is closely associated with learning and memory processes, dysfunction of this system might contribute to the pathophysiology of cognitive disorders. Therefore, atomoxetine, which alters the noradrenergic neurotransmission in the synaptic cleft, has a potential to modulate learning and memory functions in various areas of the central nervous system. In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of atomoxetine treatment on the cognitive impairments in amnesic animals using behavioral and immunohistochemical methods. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (adult, weighing 250-300 g) were used in the experiments. Atomoxetine at doses of 3 or 6 mg/kg (i.p.) was administered to the rats for 14 days. Experimental amnesia was induced in the animals by applying scopolamine (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) injection. Following the treatment protocol, Morris water maze and passive avoidance tests were conducted to assess spatial and emotional learning and memory parameters of rats, respectively. Piracetam (300 mg/kg daily for 14 days) was used as reference drug in these experiments. In addition, motor performances of the animals were evaluated by activity cage and Rota-rod tests. Subsequent to behavioral tests, rats were euthanized and immunohistochemical analyses were performed to determine the alterations in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) levels in the hippocampi of the animals. Results: In the Morris water maze test, amnesic rats found the hidden platform slower and spent less time in the target quadrant compared to the healthy controls. On the other hand, atomoxetine treatments significantly decreased the escape latencies, and also increased the target quadrant time values of the amnesic animals at both doses. Data obtained from the passive avoidance test showed that second transition latency values of the amnesic rats were significantly shortened with respect to the control animals; while atomoxetine treatment prolonged these shortened values significantly. It was observed that atomoxetine did not alter motor coordination or spontaneous locomotor activities of animals. Moreover, this drug increased the BDNF and NGF levels in the hippocampal sub-regions which were diminished by scopolamine administration. Conclusion: The obtained findings showed that atomoxetine treatment significantly improved the impaired learning and memory performances of the rats induced by scopolamine administration. Furthermore, anti-amnesic effects of this drug were concomitant with increased neurotrophic factors levels in the hippocampal brain regions. These results suggest a notable therapeutic potential of this drug in the treatment of dementia and several cognitive disorders; however, it should be underlined they are needed to be confirmed by welldesigned clinical trials.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the supplementation of Mentha pulegium extract (MPE) and vitamin E on performance, egg quality and antioxidant enzyme activities of laying hens. The experiment study was conducted with 120 40 weeks old laying hens (Lohman LSL). Hens were given five dietary treatments of which each was repeated six times on 4 birds. Hens in the experiment groups were given 50 mg / kg MPE, 100 mg / kg MPE, 50 mg / kg vitamin E, 100 mg/kg vitamin E and the hens in control group were fed on basal diet. MPE and vitamin E supplementation did not make any change on feed consumption and egg weight but improved feed conversion ratio. Addition of 100 mg / kg MPE and vitamin E significantly increased the egg production. No significant difference were found between control and experimental groups in terms of shell thickness, yellowness, shape index and ratio of albumen, yolk and egg shell. However, MPE and vitamin E supplementation improved the shell breaking strength and Hough Unit. Dietary supplementation of MPE and vitamin E did not change AST, ALT, TG, cholesterol, HDL, LDL and glucose level in serum. Serum MDA value was decreased by MPE and vitamin E addition. Serum MDA levels were reduced by addition of MPE and vitamin E, but there was no difference in SOD activity among the groups. The addition of 50 and 100 mg / kg vitamin E significantly reduced the GSH-Px activity. As a result, 100 mg / kg MPE supplementation can be recommended as an alternative to antibiotic feed additives.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ3Effect of resin content on tribological behavior of brake pad composite material
Yanar, Harun; Ayar, Hasan Huseyin; Demirtas, Muhammet; Purcek, Gencaga
Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effect of straight phenolic resin content on the fade behavior, frictions and wear characteristics of pre-determined brake pad composite matrix having specific amount of barite (BaSO4), rock wool, Kevlar, graphite and magnetite. Design/methodology/approach Different amount of resin ranging between 16 and 20 wt. per cent were added by changing only the filler (barite) content of composite matrix. Subsequently, friction and wear behavior of the composite samples were analyzed using a special pin-on-disc type test system developed for brake pad sample. The worn surfaces were investigated by SEM and three-dimensional (3D) surface profilometer. Findings The average coefficient of friction (CoF) of composite samples and temperature of the disc surface showed a linear increase with decreasing the resin content. The sample having 20 wt. per cent resin showed the minimum wear rate with smooth worn surface. But the amount of fade is quite high in that sample. Decreasing resin content decreased the fade formation, and the composite with 16 per cent resin brought about the minimum fade formation. As the fade formation is unwanted in brake pad applications, the composite with 16 wt. per cent resin was proposed as the most appropriate one considering the performance parameters related to friction and wear. Originality/value This paper optimizes the resin content of composite brake pad materials to achieve the best combination of its tribo-performance and mechanical properties and provides valuable information for scientists and engineers working in that area.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Analysis of telomere length in patients with COVID-19 and investigation into its relationship with clinical- demographic data
Savrun, Atakan; Dirican, Ebubekir
Purpose: Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease unknown before the 2019 outbreak in Wuhan. This study evaluated telomere length in COVID-19 (+) and (-) samples with clinical-demographic parameters.Materials and Methods: DNA was isolated from COVID-19 (+) (n=70) and (-) (n=70) patients. Telomere length was determined by real-time-PCR (RT-PCR). The 2- increment increment Ct method was used to analyze the telomere length of the samples. Results: There were significant differences in creatinine, LDH, ferritin, WBC, NEU and CRP in COVID-19 (+) patients compared to COVID-19 (-) patients. The NEU/LYM (or N/L) ratio was found higher in the patients with COVID-19 (+), than in COVID-19 (-). On the other hand, our COVID-19 (+) patients (mean +/- std:0.93 +/- 0.58) had significantly shorter telomere lengths than the COVID-19 (-) (mean +/- std:1.26 +/- 0.76). Moreover, COVID-19 (+) male patients (mean +/- std:1.06 +/- 0.50) had longer telomere length than female patients (mean +/- std:0.76 +/- 0.54). Telomere length was significantly shorter in patients with COVID-19 (+) with high blood urea nitrogen (BUN), high creatinine, high hematocrit, high NEU levels, normal platelets (PLT), and low WBC levels. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that telomere length and blood parameter levels influence the severity of COVID-19. Blood parameters differed in patients with COVID-19 (+) and COVID-19 (-). As a result, increasing the number of similar studies in the future can demonstrate the significance of our findings.

Atmaca, Barbaros; Ergun, Mustafa; Ates, Sevket
In this paper, seven real earthquake records are scaled according to Eurocode 8 design acceleration spectrum by using SESCAP (Selection and Scaling Program). SESCAP is a scaling program based on time domain scaling method and developed by using MATLAB, GUI software. Real and scaled earthquake records are used for linear time history analyses of a six-storied reinforced concrete building modeled as spatial by SAP2000. Eurocode 8 allows the use of real earthquake records for linear and nonlinear time history analyses of structures. In the case of using three earthquake records in linear and nonlinear time history analyses, maximum results of structural responses are used for design of structures. If at least seven time history analyses are performed, the mean responses of the structures are taken into account rather than the maximum results. For the selection of maximum results of structural response from thirty five groups are created by calculating combination of threes of seven real and scaled earthquake records, and another group including all of the seven real and scaled earthquake records are created for selection of mean. Relative floor displacements along X axis of the building are preferred as structural response of the building in this study. It is seen that differences between mean value and maximum value of the relative floor displacements along X axis of the building induced by seven and three scaled earthquake records respectively are less than ones obtained from real earthquake records.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Enhancing Burnability Characteristics of Low-Temperature Burnt-Cement Clinker by Recycling Phosphogypsum Wastes
Aksan, U.; Köseoglu, K.; Gökçe, H. S.
In the present study, the effect of phosphogypsum, a byproduct from the phosphoric acid production industry, on the clinkerization process was researched in order to improve the burnability of clinkers at lower burning temperatures. Raw meal samples containing phosphogypsum at 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% by weight were burned at 1,350 degrees C, 1,400 degrees C, 1,450 degrees C, and 1,500 degrees C. The introduction of phosphogypsum reduced the presence of unbounded (free) CaO relatively up to 43%. Thus, the mineralization effect of phosphogypsum promotes lower burning temperatures. The free CaO content of the 5% phosphogypsum containing clinker decreased to 0.94% at 1,400 degrees C after 120 min of burning time. The free CaO content was found to be almost identical (0.75%) to that of industrial clinker burned in a rotary kiln at 1,500 degrees C. Due to the low free CaO content (<1%) and the burnability index (73), the recycling of phosphogypsum wastes was found to be suitable for the production of eco-efficient clinkers. The reduced energy consumption and energy-related CO2 emissions in such modified clinkers can contribute to the economic and ecological goals of the cement industry.
