- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ14-aminothiophenol-intercalated montmorillonite: Organic-inorganic hybrid material as an immobilization support for biosensors
Yilmaz, Yahya Yasin; Yalcinkaya, Esra Evrim; Demirkol, Dilek Odaci; Timur, Suna
Hybrid materials containing organic and inorganic structures are very important because they have the advantages of each of their components. Intercalation of the organic molecule to inorganic structures such as clay allows the preparation of multifunctional new immobilization matrices that contain both the strength properties of the clays and the properties of the organic molecule such as its functional groups (amine, carboxyl or hydroxyl etc.). In this study, 4-aminothiophenol intercalated montmorillonite (4ATP-Mt) was prepared and used as an immobilization layer for the pyranose oxidase (PyOx) enzyme on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. Firstly, 4ATP intercalation of Mt was carried out, and the success of intercalation was proven using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) techniques. Then PyOx was immobilized using 4ATP-Mt, BSA and glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker on the surface of GC electrodes. To show the coating steps for the preparation of 4ATP-Mt/PyOx biosensors, cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were applied, and surface morphology was visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After optimization of working conditions, analytical performance parameters were determined for glucose detection. The 4ATP-Mt/PyOx biosensor exhibited a wide linear concentration range between 0.01 and 0.5 mM (LOD: 1.0 mu M) for glucose. Additionally, the fabricated 4ATP-Mt/PyOx was assayed for the analysis of glucose in artificial body fluids and drinks.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ4Effects of Bifidobacterium animalis and inulin addition on quality characteristics of synbiotic milk chocolate
Akgül, Ayse; Sert, Durmus; Mercan, Emin
The aim of this study was to investigate effects of addition of B. animalis BB-12 (before tempering, BT or after tempering, AT) and inulin (6, 8, and 10%) on thermal, physicochemical characteristics, fatty acid composition, textural properties and probiotic viability of milk chocolates during 60 days of storage. The free fatty acid (FFA) value of milk chocolates ranged from 0.66 to 0.89 (% oleic acid), in which higher ratio of inulin addition increased the FFA. Probiotics and inulin addition increased darkness of chocolates when compared to control. D[4,3] value of samples ranged from 9.26-17.97 mu m. Higher inulin ratio in chocolates increased viscosity and yield value. These values in the group BT were higher than those of the group AT. BB-12 count of probiotic and synbiotic samples ranged from 7.09-8.06 log cfu/g during the storage. Higher inulin ratio increased the probiotics count in samples. Probiotic addition after tempering increased the count of probiotic and improved viability at the end of storage. The results showed that B. animalis BB-12 is capable of surviving in milk chocolate, at an appropriate bacteria count (>107 cfu/g), up to 60 days of storage at 18 degrees C.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Short-Term Effects of Extremely Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields on Neurogenesis and Wnt Signaling in Amniotic Fluid Cells
Uzun, Cosar; Karakas, Umit; Ay, Mustafa Ertan; Ay, Ozlem Izci; Yildiri, Didem Derici; Erdal, Nurten; Erdal, Mehmet Emin
Background: Extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) at 50 Hz are prevalent in household electrical systems. Although various studies have examined the effects of ELF-EMF on cell proliferation and gene expression, its impact on amniotic fluid cells (AFCs) remains unclear. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the potential effects of ELF-EMFs on gene expression related to neurogenesis and the Wnt signaling pathway in AFCs. Methods: AFCs were isolated from amniotic fluid obtained via amniocentesis and divided into five groups: control, sham, and three groups exposed to different ELF-EMF intensities (1 mT, 2 mT, 3 mT for 30 minutes/day for 7 days). Expression levels of genes involved in neurogenesis (HES1, Neurog1, Neurog2, Neurod1) and Wnt signaling (SFRP2, SFRP4, SFRP5, APC1) were analyzed using real-time PCR. Results: ELF-EMF exposure did not result in significant changes in gene expression among the experimental groups compared to controls. Conclusion: Short-term exposure (Acute exposure) to ELF-EMF at moderate intensities does not significantly impact gene expression related to neurogenesis or Wnt signaling in AFCs. Future studies should explore prolonged exposure (chronic exposure) and a broader range of intensities to evaluate developmental impacts more comprehensively.

PurposeThis study aimed to develop and validate the Food Label Awareness Scale (FLAS) to comprehensively assess adults' food label reading habits and expectations.Design/methodology/approachThe FLAS was developed based on a literature review and expert input. Initial item generation was followed by expert evaluations for content and face validity. Data were collected through structured face-to-face interviews using the preliminary version of the FLAS and a sociodemographic questionnaire. A total of 300 adults aged 20-65 years participated. Food label awareness was assessed based on the three subdimensions: (1) product packaging and ingredients, (2) nutrition and health and (3) product brand. In addition, participants' age, gender and education level were recorded. Cronbach's alpha assessed internal consistency. Reliability was supported by comparing the highest and lowest 27% of total scores. Associations between demographics and subdimension scores were tested using appropriate statistical methods.FindingsThe finalized 18-item FLAS demonstrated a three-factor structure with acceptable model fit and internal consistency. Older adults had higher awareness of packaging and ingredients. Lower education was associated with greater reliance on product brand.Research limitations/implicationsA primary limitation is the geographically restricted sample, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.Originality/valueThis study is original in developing a valid and reliable scale specifically measuring adults' awareness of food label reading - an area less explored in the literature, which mostly emphasizes general nutrition knowledge or label reading frequency.

Çimen, Arzu; Akpinar, Reva Balci
PURPOSE: The current randomized controlled trial examined the effects of Health Belief Model (HBM)-based education on daily water intake, hydration biomarkers, thirst discomfort, and dry eye complaints in older adults. METHOD: Eighty community-dwelling older adults aged >= 65 years with insufficient daily water intake (<1 L/day) were screened and randomly assigned to intervention (n = 40) and control (n = 40) groups. Eligibility was determined using predefined inclusion criteria and baseline assessments. The intervention included individualized HBM-based education supported by a booklet and intake log. Data were collected using a descriptive form, Thirst Discomfort Scale, Ocular Surface Disease Index, and refractometer-based measurements of urine specific gravity and refractive index. RESULTS: Postintervention mean daily water intake significantly increased in the intervention group (mean = 749.8 [SD = 176] mL vs. 572.9 [SD = 159.3] mL; p < .001). Thirst discomfort scores decreased, and between-group differences were found in urine specific gravity and refractive index (p < .001). Although Ocular Surface Disease Index scores improved (p = .002), the clinical impact was limited. CONCLUSION: HBM-based education increased water intake and reduced thirst discomfort, supporting community-based geriatric nursing practice. Future studies should examine long-term effects and support integration of theory-based hydration education into nursing training and clinical practice.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ2Carbonic anhydrase activity from the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) liver: The toxicological effects of heavy metals
Kaya, Elif Duygu; Söyüt, Hakan; Beydemir, Sukru
Many studies have shown that metal ions may lead to oxidative stress in biological systems. Accordingly, DNA damage, protein modification, enzyme inhibition and activation, lipid peroxidation and many other effects may occur in living organisms. Many different formations of metal ions may enter human cells along with water, air, and various foods, and humans are negatively affected by these conditions, either directly or indirectly. These effects may cause irreversible damage to human metabolism. In this study, the toxicological effects of heavy metals on carbonic anhydrase enzyme activity from the gilthead sea bream liver were investigated. The carbonic anhydrase enzyme was purified via affinity chromatography and had a specific activity of 6775.5 EU mg(-1). The kinetics and characteristic properties, such as optimum pH, stable pH, optimum temperature, activation energy (E-a), activation enthalpy (Delta H), Q(10), K-m, and V-max, were determined for the purified enzyme SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed a single band and molecular weight of the subunit was approximately 25 kDa. Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Ag(I) inhibited the enzyme activity in vitro. The type of inhibition and K-i values for these metals were calculated from Lineweaver-Burk plots as 17.74 mM, 36.20 mM, 12.85 mM and 0.025 mM for Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Ag(I), respectively. All the metals were noncompetitive inhibitors. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ3Effect of loading rate on cohesive parameters of the adhesive Araldite 2015
Erbayrak, Engin; Ozer, Halil
This study addresses the effect of loading rates on cohesive parameters and microstructural composition of the Araldite 2015 adhesive. Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) samples were tested under the loading rates of 1, 5, 10, 20, 100 and 200 mm x min(-1). The Park-Paulinho-Roeser model (PPR model) was used to get cohesive parameters. In modelling of the softening behavior, inverse analyses were performed using the date obtained from the PPR softening curves. It was seen that the fracture energy and cohesive parameters are decreasing with increasing the loading rate. However, there seems to be a transition region where the fracture energy nearly remains constant. Microstructural analyses were implemented in order to study the effects of the loading rates on the characteristics of the fracture surfaces. It was concluded that the loading rates greatly influence the distribution of micro-voids in the epoxy matrix. Moreover, the presence of voids in epoxy matrix improved the plastic deformation around the crack tip and increased the fracture toughness.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022A New Approach to Human Capital: Crime Adjusted Human Capital Index on European Countries
Kabakçi Günay, Eylul; Yildiz, Umit; Günsoy, Guler; Günsoy, Bulent
Human capital is a one of the essential components in the economic growth and development. Also, the belief that education and health level, which are the main components of human capital, are main features of a happy and healthy society, is getting stronger. But there is a fact that crime is a destructive notion that affects a society???s human capital. In this context, this study aims to create an alternative social welfare measurement method that includes crime rates as a component to human capital on 35 European countries. In this regard, first, a general crime index was generated by using 13 different crime categories of the 35 European countries, and then this index was adapted to the Human Capital Index. As a result, the Crime-Adjusted Human Capital Index (CAHCI) was obtained. It was observed that the country rankings we obtained based on the CAHCI differ significantly from the rankings made based on the Human Capital Index. Significant number of countries, which ranks high in the Human Capital Index, ranks lower when crime rates are considered, indicates that the reliability of social welfare measures based on human capital should be questioned.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2Modal testing and full-scale seismic evaluation of a historical minaret according to 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake and TBEC 2018 design spectrum
Demirtas, Betul; Yanik, Yusuf; Aymelek, Abdullah; Türker, Temel; Yildirim, Omer
PurposeMinarets, which were constructed from different types of materials, are slender and tall structures. Minarets could vary in terms of the construction technique, geometry and material. The seismic vulnerability and dynamic behavior of minarets could be different because of these reasons. Full-scale evaluation of minarets includes both experimental and numerical investigations. Experimental methods provide knowledge on the in situ conditions. The structural analysis and performance evaluation can be performed by using numerical methods. In this paper, full-scale structural evaluation of the Trabzon Fatih Mosque Minaret was presented by using experimental and numerical methods.Design/methodology/approachFirstly, the finite element (FE) model of the minaret was generated by ANSYS software. Then, experimental measurements were carried out under environmental vibrations with newly developed vibration system. Afterwards, the initial FE model of the minaret was updated by using manual updating method according to the experimental measurement results. For the seismic performance assessment of the historical minaret, the time history and response spectrum analyses were performed on the initial and updated FE models using the acceleration records of 2023 February Kahramanmaras earthquake and TBEC 2018 codes. The results were evaluated comparatively, revealing that the nonlinear analyses produced higher values compared to other methods. Additionally, variations were observed in the updated FE model results compared to the initial FE model. Finally, it was seen that the minaret did not have sufficient strength against Kahramanmaras earthquake load, so it could collapse under such an earthquake.FindingsBy employing model updating method, the average absolute difference was substantially reduced from 9.12% to 2.11%. The maximum displacements increased with the effect of model updating in all analyses. It was also seen that the spectrum analyses results had lower values than the time-history analyses results and the displacement of the updated FE model was found to be approximately 8% greater than that of the initial FE model in the nonlinear analyses. The maximum/minimum principal stresses decreased in the updated model in the linear analyses. Also, it was determined that the equivalent stresses were higher in linear analyses. It was seen that the cracks occurring in the nonlinear analyses were concentrated more intensely at the bottom region, the transition segment and around the balcony of the minaret. The concentration of damage in these regions suggested that special attention was needed to increase structural durability. The drift ratios were calculated as 0.0056 and 0.0076 for the initial and updated FE models in the linear analyses, respectively. The initial FE model remained the CD limit, but the updated model reached the limit in CP. The drift ratios were calculated as 0.0087 and 0.0093 for the initial and updated FE models in the nonlinear analyses. Both the FE models reached the CP limit. It could be concluded that the minaret did not have sufficient strength against Kahramanmaras Earthquake, so it could collapse under such an earthquake. The drift ratios were calculated as 0.0041 and 0.0043 for the initial and updated FE models in the spectrum analyses. Both the FE models remained within the CD limit.Originality/valueThis paper aimed to evaluate effects of FE model updating on the dynamic and seismic behaviors of the historical Fatih Mosque Minaret in Trabzon. Structural behavior of the minaret was investigated using both experimental and numerical methods. For this purpose, 3-D FE model generated with ANSYS software of the minaret was updated according to the ambient vibration test results. Ambient vibration tests were conducted by measurement system, which was developed by our research team. The manual model updating method was utilized to minimize the differences between numerical and experimental results by varying the material properties. The linear-nonlinear time history analyses and response spectrum analyses were carried out to evaluate the seismic performance of the initial and updated FE models using the acceleration records of 2023 February Kahramanmaras Earthquake records and TBEC 2018 codes.

A bacterial strain was isolated from Pasinler hot spring, Erzurum, Turkey. The purified thermophilic isolate was identified as Geobacillus pallidus P26 and used to produce extracellular pectin lyase (EC 4.2.2.10). Pectin lyase enzyme was purified 34 fold by using DEAE-cellulose anion exchange column chromatography and characterized. Molecular weight of the enzyme was determined as 56 kDa by using Sephadex G-100 gel filtration chromatography. Purification of enzyme was verified by SDS-PAGE. The pH- and temperature optima of enzyme were determined (pH 9.0 and 60 degrees C, respectively). Pectin lyase was mostly stable at 50 degrees C: for 24 hours. Its' activity ducruitscd to 50 % for 24 h at 60 degrees C. K-M and V-max were calculated as 24.8 mg/mL and 2.28 mu mol/L min, respectively. Purified pectin lyase was inhibited by Fe3+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Co2+ and Hg2+ but not by Mg2+. The purified pectin lyase enzyme was used for getting fruits juices. It was found that yields of fruits juices increased when they were compared with control.

Yaylaci, Murat; Öner, Erdal; Birinci, Ahmet
This paper considers a receding contact problem for two elastic layers (with different elastic constants and heights) supported by two elastic quarter planes. The lower layer is supported by two elastic quarter planes, and the upper elastic layer is subjected to a symmetrical distributed load whose length is 2a on its top surface. It is assumed that contact between all surfaces is frictionless, and the effect of gravity force is neglected. First, the problem is formulated and solved using the theory of elasticity and integral transform technique. Using the integral transform technique and boundary conditions of the problem, the problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations in which contact pressures and contact areas are unknown. The system of singular integral equations is solved numerically by using the Gauss-Jacobi integration formulation. Second, the receding contact problem has been developed based on the FEM ANSYS software. Two-dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. The ANSYS and analytical results for the contact pressures, contact areas, and normal stresses (sigma(x) and sigma(y)) along the axis of symmetry are given for various dimensionless quantities. The ANSYS results are verified by comparison with analytical results. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

If spermatozoa cannot be found after testiculer sperm extraction (TESE) in patients followed up due to nonobstructive azospermia (NOA) and the patients do not want donor spermatozoa, performance of round spermatid injection (ROSI) with the current technology seems to be the last resort. This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the effect of testicular morphology on the development of embryos to the blastocyst stage obtained from ROSI. Between September 2019 and March 2020, after TESE and biopsy 29 patients who had only spermatid were taken to study. Tubular appearance, basal membrane appearance, Johnson score, peritubular fibrosis, interstitial fibrosis, and Leydig cell proliferation were pathologically examined. Following egg collection, ROSI was applied to the oocytes using the piezoelectric method. The embryos were monitored until the blastocyst stage. The mean age of the 29 patients was 36.3+5.01 years. Also, 7 patients had not previously undergone TESE, 20 had previously undergone once, and 2 had previously undergone twice. It was observed that having a history of TESE and a high Johnson score increased the likelihood of the embryo remaining in the blastocyst stage (P=0.021 and 0.014, respectively). However, other parameters do not affect the likelihood of blastocyst formation (P>0.05). Low TESE history and high Johnson score were associated with embryo development to the blastocyst stage. If spermatozoa are not found in patients with nonobstructive azoospermia, ROSI performed during initial TESE increases the likelihood of blastocyst formation.

This study aimed in sedentary subjected to progressive relaxation training (PRT) for determination of the effect of this exercise on MDA, OHdG, and NO levels and SOD and GPx activities. Experimental design was used in this research. Seven healthy, sedentary volunteers were included in the study. All subjects were male and within 15 to 18 years of age. Jacabson's Progressive Muscle Relaxation Training was applied to the volunteers for 6 six weeks. Before and after the chronic and acute exercise, blood samples were taken from the subjects, and K-Related Samples Friedman test was used for the analysis of repeated measurements and for the comparison of pre- and post-exercise data and chronic and acute mode data. In addition, 2-Related Samples Wilcoxon test was used in the evaluation of the groups as pairs. Our findings showed increases in MDA PRT, and no statistically significant increase in NO levels after PRT in sedentary volunteers. When the effect of relaxation exercise on the antioxidant system is considered, both SOD and GPx activities increased. The effect of PRT on 8-OHdG has been found to exhibit significant increase after PRT. It can easily be said that PRT may be helpful in patients with chronic disease, especially for obtaining a healing and a high quality sleep. In addition, in order for the athletes to feel well and to use their muscles actively, PRT may be helpful. We can conclude that, with respect to human health and physiology, no controversy may be seen in progressive muscle relaxation training.

Özcan, Serap; Kadakal, Mahir; Iscan, Imdat; Kadakal, Huriye
As researchers, our primary commitment is to engage in the creation of scientific and academic knowledge. Recognizing the importance of societal impact, we also strive to contribute to social awareness through our work. Natural disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, avalanches, landslides, tsunamis, and others, frequently afflict regions globally, resulting in profound human losses and extensive material damage. Notably, the earthquake that struck our country on February 6, 2023, marked as the disaster of the century, deeply affected eleven provinces, leading to a tragic loss of tens of thousands of lives. In this paper, we investigate the concept of earthquake P-functions. We establish the Hermite-Hadamard inequality for this class of functions and derive several refinements of the Hermite-Hadamard type inequality for functions whose first derivative, in absolute value, at a certain power, is an earthquake P-function. We present some applications of the trapezoidal formula. We also provide new bounds for special means of different non-negative real numbers.

Turhan, Fatma Seher; Yayla, Ibrahim Erdogan; Sahranç, Umit; Makas, Samet; Yildirim, Murat
Parenting stress is a critical factor influencing family dynamics, often undermining the quality of coparenting. Exploring the mechanisms through which parenting stress impacts coparenting and the potential mediating role of parental self-efficacy is essential for developing effective family-based interventions. This study aims to examine the mediating role of parental self-efficacy in the relationship between parenting stress and coparenting. The sample consisted of 240 parents (79.6% female) aged 25-58 (M = 36.5). Participants completed the Parenting Stress scale, the Berkeley Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Coparenting Scale. Parenting stress showed a significant negative association with both coparenting quality and parenting self-efficacy. Furthermore, parenting self-efficacy was found to mediate the association between parenting stress and coparenting. These results highlight the important role of parents' self-efficacy in influencing how stress influences coparenting dynamics. Strengthening parents' confidence in their parenting abilities may help buffer the harmful effects of stress and foster more cooperative, supportive coparenting practices.

Propolis, owing to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, acts as a cariostatic agent, capable of preventing the accumulation of dental plaque and inhibiting inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of propolis are attributed to caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), which is present in European propolis. The objective of the conducted study was to assess the anti-inflammatory effects of the Polish ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) and isolated CAPE on stimulated with LPS and IFN-alpha, as well as the combination of LPS and IFN-alpha. The cytotoxicity of the tested compounds was determined using the MTT assay. The concentrations of specific cytokines released by the HGF-1 cell line following treatment with EEP (25-50 mu g/mL) or CAPE (25-50 mu g/mL) were assessed in the culture supernatant. In the tested concentrations, both CAPE and EEP did not exert cytotoxic effects. Our results demonstrate that CAPE reduces TNF-alpha and IL-6 in contrast to EEP. Propolis seems effective in stimulating HGF-1 to release IL-6 and IL-8. A statistically significant difference was observed for IL-8 in HGF-1 stimulated by LPS+IFN-alpha and treated EEP at a concentration of 50 mu g/mL (p = 0.021201). Moreover, we observed that CAPE demonstrates a stronger interaction with IL-8 compared to EEP, especially when CAPE was administered at a concentration of 50 mu g/mL after LPS + IFN-alpha stimulation (p = 0.0005). Analysis of the phenolic profile performed by high-performance liquid chromatography allowed identification and quantification in the EEP sample of six phenolic acids, five flavonoids, and one aromatic ester-CAPE. Propolis and its compound-CAPE-exhibit immunomodulatory properties that influence the inflammatory process. Further studies may contribute to explaining the immunomodulatory action of EEP and CAPE and bring comprehensive conclusions.
