Volkan, Şenay; Özen, Soner; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan
LiFePO4 thin films with thickness values of 65 nm and 70 nm were deposited onto glass substrates by RF magnetron sputtering, using a LiFePO4 target in the argon atmosphere. A comprehensive study of the optical properties was performed and the dispersions of the constants were determined. The transmittance and absorbance spectra were measured in the wavelength range of 400-1000 nm. The films showed optical transmittance over 90% in the visible range. The optical band gap value of the films was evaluated as 3 eV. The refractive index value of the films is 1.63 at λ = 550 nm. AFM micrographs indicate smooth surface with low values ofroot mean square roughness. Contact angle measurements of several testing liquids were used to characterize each sample in terms of wettability. The films are hydrophilic as observed from contact angle measurements. The surface free energy of the film surfaces and their components (dispersive and polar) were calculated from the contact angle data using the different theories available in the literature.

Coating surfaces of fruit with electrospun zein mats with functionalized antimicrobial properties can be a novel strategy to prevent fungal colonization on fruit surfaces. In this study, we tested curcumin-loaded electrospun zein nanofibers (CLZN) in terms of limitation of postharvest decay on CLZN–coated apples infected with Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium expansum. Mixtures of zein and curcumin (the curcumin amounts of 2.5 and 5 wt% based on the weight of zein powder) were electrospun to yield cylindrical and ultrafine (< 350 nm in diameter) polymeric nanofibers. In addition, molecular, thermal, zeta potential and morphological properties of the CLZN as well as their encapsulation efficiency and releasing kinetics were determined, revealing that the developed zein-based scaffolds showed high encapsulation efficiency, molecular interactions with curcumin within nanofibers, alterations in physical states of these components, smooth beadless structure and good thermal (an endothermic peak at 152 °C) and dispersion stability (− 24 mV of ζ potential) properties. In vitro antifungal activity tests conducted at 27 °C for six days showed that CLZN were effective against growth of the tested fungal pathogens, exhibiting almost 40–50% inhibition of mycelial growth of the fungal pathogens; but the antifungal effect against P. expansum was but two-fold higher than that against B. cinerea. In vivo tests conducted at 23 °C with 75% humidity for six days confirmed in vitro test results in terms of both visual inspections on uncoated and coated apples, revealing almost 50% reduction in lesion diameter measured on coated apples infected with Penicillium expansum. Our results suggest that CLZN mats open up new opportunities for a novel application of edible and biodegradable antifungal coating material with the ability to hinder fungal proliferation on coated apples during storage period. Industrial relevance We coated the surfaces of fruits with electrospun mats with functionalized antimicrobial properties to prevent fungal colonization on fruit surface. The coating of apples with curcumin-loaded zein nanoparticles (CLZNs) limited the postharvest decay caused by the fungal pathogens, Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea. This study showed that by encapsulation of curcumin into zein-based nanofibers considerably increased the antifungal effectiveness of curcumin. Our results highlighted the potential use of the CLZN as an effective fungicidal coating material against P. expansum and B. cinerea and suggested that CLZNs can be promising tools to compete with synthetic fungicide counterparts of curcumin. The results of this study should be of great importance to industrial applications in terms of development of natural, but effective preservatives as alternative to synthetic ones.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2019The relationship between political stability, fixed capital, employment, and economic growth: An analysis on MENA countries
Boz, Fusun Celebi
As the growth theories before 1980 fell short in explaining the developmental differences in countries and could not provide a solution to the problems of underdeveloped countries, a necessity for new growth models emerged. In connection to the exogenous nature of technology, the perception that all countries can achieve economic growth depending on capital stock and employment volume was in time replaced by the effectiveness of institutional and social factors in this process, and it was seen that other factors rather than economic factors would be influential in terms of achieving economic growth. In the scope of institutional factors, the political regimes of countries were aimed to be analyzed, and accordingly, strong institutional structures were associated with democracy. Thus, it may be stated that, while democratic regimes are dominant in developed societies, antidemocratic regimes are encountered in developing societies. In this context, the type of the political regime is considered to be the main variable for economic growth. As the type of the political regime was inadequate in completely explaining economic growth, the concept of political stability started to be considered in the literature (Telatar, 2003:74-75). The concept of political stability is important in terms of determination of economic policies in a country for the long-term rather than the short-term and for rational decisions by managers in the private sector. Moreover, political instability may lead to property issues by bringing about weaknesses in the legal system. This situation may affect.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1A study on some physical properties of a Pb-doped GaAs thin film produced by thermionic vacuum arc
Şenay, Volkan; Özen, Soner; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan
A 155 nm Pb-doped GaAs thin film was deposited on a glass substrate by means of the thermionic vacuum arc technique in 30 s using GaAs and Pb pellets as source materials. Tools and techniques such as an optical reflectometer, UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer, FESEM, EDX, AFM and optical tensiometer were employed to investigate the physical properties of the produced film. From the optical investigations, the refractive index at the wavelength of 632.8 nm and optical band gap of the film were found to be 4.03 and 1.13 eV respectively. It was observed that Pb doping increased the value of refractive index and decreased the band gap value. A uniform surface morphology with fine grain covering the entire surface was observed through the FESEM and AFM studies while 50–80 nm grain size and 2.22 nm root mean square roughness values were obtained. The EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Ga, As and Pb elements in the film. The wetting experiments revealed that the contact angle value was dependent on the liquid used. The surface free energy calculated with OWRK/Fowkes and Equation of State approaches were about 26 mN/m.

- BildiriYalnız künye2018A perspective of a dual response surface model with a desirability function
Ozdemir, Akin; Turkoz, Mehmet
The use of response surface analysis is an effective method to improve the quality of products and processes. Along the same line, a dual response surface-based robust parameter design model may reduce product or process variability by selecting levels of input variables. In many products and processes, the researchers and practitioners may need to deal with a desirable response. Therefore, this paper proposes a new dual response surface model-based robust parameter design model with a desirability function to obtain a set of optimal operating conditions for multiple responses while minimizing the product or process variation as possible as. The proposed methodology is efficient and it improves the quality of the products by decreasing the variability in the process. The comparative studies show that proposed method is effective and outperforms the existing procedures.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ1A new frost salt scaling mechanism for concrete pavements based on brine rejection from ice layer adhered to concrete surface
Yener, Engin
In cold regions, highways, airfields or sidewalks are exposed to de-icing agents to thaw the ice layer on pavement surface. In this situation, a progressive surface damage that pulls off flaky chips from concrete pavement takes place. This damage is named as frost salt scaling. To produce scaling-resistant concrete and prevent the damage in the field, the deterioration mechanism should be understood well. For this aim, a number of mechanisms have been hypothesised in literature. However, there is no unique one which can be used to explain all observations from laboratory tests and field applications. In this study, a novel hypothesis that is built on earlier findings in literature is introduced. According to the proposed mechanism, the pressure applied by forced brine from outer strong ice layer, which adhered to surface, causes scaling in the strongly ice adhered regions. The published events that are unexplainable by a unique former mechanisms proposed in literature related to the frost scaling are rationalised based on the proposed mechanism.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ2Isolation and identification of exopolysaccharide producer lactic acid bacteria from Turkish yogurt
İspirli, Hümeyra; Dertli, Enes
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from traditional yogurt samples and genotypic characterization of these isolates revealed the presence of 21 distinct LAB strains belonging to Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, and Lactobacillus plantarum as new LAB strains. Determination of the exopolysaccharide (EPS) production characteristics of the selected strains of each species revealed that all strains possessed at least one gene required for both homopolymeric- and heteropolymeric-type EPS production. Structural analysis of the EPSs showed that L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus Y39 and S. thermophilus Y102 produced heteropolymeric EPS containing glucose and galactose, whereas Leuc. mesenteroides Y35 and L. plantarum Y36 produced homopolymeric glucan-type EPS. The level of EPS production in these strains was found to be in a similar range. These strains with EPS production characteristics are good candidates for future studies as new LAB for yogurt production. Practical applications: Recent trends in yogurt production technology have led to an increased use of ropy starter cultures in yogurt production due to the technological roles of exopolysacharides (EPS) produced by these cultures. The main role of EPS in yogurt production is to improve the textural properties of yogurt as an in situ produced natural polymer. In addition to the yogurt starter cultures, use of adjunct cultures during production of yogurt is also of special interest to enhance the technological and nutritional characteristics of yogurt. Therefore, in this study, potential yogurt starter and adjunct cultures from traditional yogurt samples with EPS production characteristics were isolated. From these isolates, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus Y39 and Streptococcus thermophilus Y102 produced heteropolymeric EPS containing glucose and galactose, whereas Leuconostoc mesenteroides Y35 and Lactobacillus plantarum Y36 produced homopolymeric glucan.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ1Effect of high-pressure homogenisation on viscosity, particle size and microbiological characteristics of skim and whole milk concentrates
Mercan, Emin; Sert, Durmuş; Akın, Nihat
Effect of high-pressure (HPH) homogenisation on milk concentrates were studied. Skim and whole milk concentrates were homogenised at 0–150 and 0–40 MPa, respectively, and viscosity, particle size measurement, microbiological and colour characteristics determined. Up to a pressure of 120 MPa, viscosity of HPH-treated skim milk concentrates (SMC) was proportional to HPH pressure and was lower than that of the control (0 MPa). With whole milk concentrates (WMC), HPH decreased viscosity up to a pressure of 20 MPa; above 30 MPa viscosity increased. According to a power law model, both skim and whole milk concentrates showed shear-thinning flow behaviour. HPH at pressures above 120 MPa completely inactivated the microbial load of SMC. Up to a pressure of 50 MPa, HPH decreased the mean particle size (D [3,2]) of SMC; an increasing trend of D [3,2] was observed above 70 MPa. Except at 40 MPa, HPH decreased D [3,2] values of WMC samples.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ1Effect of fly ash and silica fume on hardened properties of foam concrete
Gökçe, H. Süleyman; Hatungimana, Daniel; Ramyar, Kambiz
In this study, the effects of foam content as well as fly ash and silica fume inclusion on some physical and mechanical properties of foam concrete, subjected to various curing regimes, were researched. Totally, forty-five series of foam concrete mixtures were prepared at three replacement levels of fly ash and silica fume (0, 10 and 20%, by weight of cement), at three foam contents (0, 31 and 47%, by volume) and at three curing regimes (7- and 28-day standard water curing and autoclave curing). Density, water absorption, compressive strength and thermal conductivity values of the mixtures were determined on prismatic specimens with dimensions of 40 × 40 × 160 mm. The density (oven dry), water absorption, compressive strength and thermal conductivity results of the foam concrete were found to be between 873–1998 kg/m3, 3.5–35.9%, 1.5–88.1 MPa and, 0.239–0.942 W/m.K, respectively. A balanced benefit with regard to both compressive strength and water absorption of foam concrete was found in the mix with density of 1320 kg/m3. Particularly in the mixtures having high foam content, silica fume introduction resulted in superior compressive strength values and greater compressive strength/thermal conductivity ratios than fly ash introduction.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ4The effect of taboo content on incidental vocabulary acquisition in a foreign language: A facial expression analysis study
Dolgunsöz, Emrah
This study aims to examine how taboo content affects language learner psychology and language learning gains in a multi-modal learning environment by using facial expression analysis. 40 Muslim language learners were initially asked about their opinions on pork and watched a subtitled cooking video including pork visuals and their facial expressions were recorded. Before watching the video, only 20 of them were told it was lamb. The video was followed by a stimulated recall procedure, a cloze test and an output test. The results of the facial data analysis showed that Muslim learners were disgusted by the taboo content, which was in line with their opinions on pork taboo. However, this negative emotion did not significantly affect their test performance. Computer assisted facial expression analysis was also introduced as a biometric research technique for second language research.

Özen, Soner; Pat, Suat; Şenay, Volkan; Korkmaz, Şadan
In this paper, BGaN thin films with two different thicknesses were deposited on two different substrates and their surface morphologies were investigated. The amorphous glass and semi-crystalline polyethylene terephthalate substrates were selected. At the same time, two different deposition angles are selected with a view to the effect of deposition angle on surface morphology. The surface and optical properties were determined by using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM), spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and optical interferometer. The thicknesses of thin films on substrates are about 30 nm and 40 nm. According to the atomic force microscope images, small-dimensional grains observed on relatively large grains. The roughness values of the thin films on the polyethylene terephthalate substrate are lower than on the glass substrate.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ1An energy prediction algorithm for wind-powered wireless sensor networks with energy harvesting
Kosunalp, Selahattin
Energy harvesting (EH) from environmental energy sources has the potential to ensure unlimited, uncontrollable and unreliable energy for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), bringing a need to predict future energy availability for the effective utilization of the harvested energy. The majority of previous prediction approaches have exploited the diurnal cycle dividing the whole day into equal-length time slots in which predictions were carried out in each slot independently. This is not, however, efficient for wind energy as it exhibits non-controllable behaviour in that the amount of energy to be harvested varies over time. This paper proposes a novel approach to predict the wind energy for EH-WSNs depending on the energy generation profile of latest condition. The distinctive feature of the proposed approach is to consider the recent conditions in current-day, instead of past-day's energy generation profiles. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using real measurements in comparison with state-of-art approaches. Results show that the proposed strategy significantly outperforms the two popular energy predictors, EWMA and Pro-Energy.

Ilter, Ilhan
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of explicit instruction in notetaking skills on the notetaking performance of seventh-grade students at different reading ability levels. The students in the notetaking instruction condition (NTI) received classroom-based notetaking skills instruction (approximately 40 minutes) every week for 10 weeks. The comparison condition students (CNT) were asked to use conventional notetaking (CNT) that was embedded within the daily social studies lessons. The participants’ reading comprehension abilities were identified through the Sentence Verification Technique, which consisted of a 16-item expository text. A notetaking performance test (NTPT) was used to assess the effect of notetaking skills instruction on two dimensions of the participants’ notes (verbatim copying and terse value). The results demonstrated that the terse value of students’ notes in the NTI condition was significantly better than that of the students in the CNT condition. The students in the NTI condition reduced their percentage of verbatim copying and used fewer words to cover more main concepts in the NTPT that followed the instructional intervention. Surprisingly, the students at low reading ability showed the greatest gains in notetaking performance from verbatim copying to terse notetaking.

The asymmetric Friedel-Crafts (FC) alkylation of pyrrole with nitroalkenes was mediated by CuBr2 and a novel bisphenol A-derived chiral catalyst at room temperature. The catalyst was found to be applicable for the asymmetric FC alkylation of pyrrole with a wide range of nitroalkenes, affording optically active alkylated pyrroles with enantioselectivities up to 94%. Furthermore, enantiomerically pure 3-nitro-2-arylpropanamides were prepared by the oxidative cleavage of the pyrrole rings in the FC products with NaIO4/RuCl3 to demonstrate the synthetic application of the products.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ2Some approaches to multi criteria decision making based on exponential operations of simplified neutrosophic numbers
Şahin, Rdvan; Liu, Peide
Simplified neutrosophic set (SNS) is a powerful tool that attracts the attention of many scholars in dealing with uncertainty and vagueness. A SNS is based on a combination of simplified neutrosophic numbers (SNNs), whose its basic components are characterized by a truth-membership degree, an indeterminacy-membership degree and a falsity-membership degree of an object in evaluation data. Aggregation operators used to synthesize simplified neutrosophic information is commonly not very effective in case where the criteria weights provided by decision makers are in form of SNNs rather than exact real numbers. In this paper, we propose two new operational laws in which the bases are positive real numbers and interval numbers, respectively and the exponents are SNNs, and discuss some of their desired properties. Then we apply them to derive two weighted exponential aggregation operators, such as the simplified neutrosophic weighted exponential aggregation (SNWEA) operator and dual simplified neutrosophic weighted exponential aggregation (DSNWEA) operator. Additionally, two approaches for multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems under the neutrosophic weight data are explored by applying these aggregation operators. At the end of the study, a convenient example is provided to demonstrate the availability and effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Gul, M.; Yilmaz, E.; Yildirim, B.A.; Sezmis, G.; Kaya, A.; Timurkaan, S.; Onel, S.E.; Tekce, E.
This study aimed to investigate the effects that including different levels of oregano essential oil (Origanum syriacum L.) (200, 400, and 600 mg/kg) in the diets of laying hens had on performance, egg quality, and intestinal morphology, as well as egg malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, blood lipid peroxidation, and oxidative stress parameters. The study used a total of 120 Lohmann white laying hens aged 20 to 22 weeks. The experiment comprised the following three treatment groups, based on the dosages of oregano essential oil: 200 mg/kg (A), 400 mg/kg (B), 600 mg/kg (C); and a control group (K) that did not use oregano essential oil. Each group included 30 hens and each was divided into six subgroups with five hens each. In this study, feed intake and egg weight were significantly higher in the treatment groups than in the control group (P=0.046; P< 0.001). There was no difference among the groups in terms of eggshell strength, egg shape index, eggshell thickness, albumin index, or yolk index. However, there was a significant difference in eggshell weight, yolk color and Haugh unit in the experimental groups (P=0.015; P=0.031; P=0.042). The MDA levels in the yolk were lowest in group A (P< 0.05). In all groups with the exception of group A, yolk and serum MDA levels increased while superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase decreased as the doses of oregano essential oil increased (P< 0.001; P< 0.001; P< 0.01; P< 0.001). There was no significant serum glutathione level. In the histological analysis of the intestine, the villus height was higher in group C than in the control group (P=0.010). Based on these results, we concluded that 200 mg/kg was the most effective dose of oregano essential oil for improving performance, egg quality, and intestinal morphology while reducing oxidative stress in laying hens.

Akdeniz, Dilsad Güven; Argün, Ziya
Learning outcome (LO) literacy is conceptualized as a necessary skill for planning teaching and learning activities effectively. The skill has two main components: understanding and interpreting learning outcomes. The current study aimed to identify learning outcome literacy of elementary mathematics teachers with regard to this conceptualization. It is a case study based on the qualitative design. Participants were 5 mathematics teachers working at different elementary (5th - 8th grade) schools in Turkey. Observations and semi-structured interviews were used for data collection based on 10 learning outcomes selected from algebra and number learning domains in local mathematics curriculum. Content analysis method was used for data analysis. According to the findings, LO literacy can be regarded as a basic teacher competence and it requires the teacher to use the knowledge and skills he/she has. The results showed that participant teachers' LO literacy was insufficient. Considering the interrelation among its components, LO literacy should be developed with all the sub-components for effective teaching of LOs.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ1The impact of internal aerogel retrofitting on the thermal bridges of residential buildings: An experimental and statistical research
Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert
In this research, internal thermal superinsulation in residential buildings is experimentally and statistically evaluated in terms of potential thermal bridging effects. As a consequence of significant deviations in thermal resistance values in buildings at post-retrofit, large amounts of heat losses occur through non-insulated building elements such as separating walls. Therefore, it is of vital importance to determine the level of energy loss due to such thermal bridges through an internal thermal superinsulation retrofit conducted in a typical UK building. 20 mm thick fibre-silica opaque aerogel blanket is implemented internally on the walls of a test bedroom, and the heat flux from the separating wall is measured and compared for the cases of pre and post-retrofit. The results reveal that the average amount of heat loss through the non-insulated separating wall at the post-retrofit is 5.86 W/m2, whereas it is only 0.66 W/m2 at the pre-retrofit. The results are also verified through a statistical model, which is presented for the first time in literature. The novel model is capable of providing information about potential energy loss from non-insulated walls as a function of location.
