The aim of the study was to investigate the genetic effects of commonly used radiofrequency on the amniocytes of pregnant women by examining the changes in the expression of genes related to signal transduction and neurogenesis induced by electromagnetic fields of radiofrequencies of 1800 and 2100 MHz by real-time PCR. Upon exposure of the amniocytes to electromagnetic radiation of 2100 MHz at high field strength, the expression levels of genes with important functions in the Wnt signaling pathways as well as neurogenesis-related genes were increased. The findings suggest that radiofrequency at high field strengths can have genotoxic effects during pregnancy.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ3Effect of Different Rates of Rambutan Peel Extract on Visfatin and Cardiac Troponi N I Response in Type 2 Diabetic Rats Induced with Streptozotocin
Çelikel Taşci, S.; Bayraktar, B.; Bülbül, A.S.; Sait, A.; Korkmaz, S.
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of STZ (Streptozotocin) and Rambutan peel extract (RPE) on serum visfatin and cardiac response in experimental Type 2 diabetic rats. Methods: In this study, 64 adult male Wistar albino rats, aged between 8-10 weeks, were used. 8 groups were randomly selected, each containing 8 rats as Control (C), R100 (RPE 100 mg/kg group given with oral gavage route of administration (OGRA), R200 (RPE 200 mg/kg group given with OGRA), R300 (RPE 300 mg/kg group given with OGRA); Diabetes Control (DC): STZ 50 mg/kg i.p administered group, DR100 (D+100 mg/kg JPE), DR200 (D+200 mg/kg JPE), DR300 (D+300 mg/kg JPE). The study lasted a total of 31 days, including adaptation (7 days), induction of diabetes (3 days) and trial period (21 days). Blood samples were taken from the tail vein (vena caudalis) of all subjects on days 0 and 21 of the study. Visfatin and cTnI levels in the serum samples were measured and evaluated by ELISA method. Result: While the increase in mean serum visfatin and cTnI levels in diabetic groups was seen mostly in DC groups, the most significant decrease in mean serum visfatin level due to the addition of RPE was determined in DR100 groups (p<0.01). As a result, it was concluded that the administration of 100 mg/kg RPE in rats had no adverse effects. It was concluded that RPE, which has a cardioprotective effect by regulating the visfatin response that plays a role in the development of diabetes, may be useful in supporting the impaired cardiovascular system function that occurs in diabetes.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1Face presentation attack detection performances of facial regions with multi-block LBP features
Günay Yılmaz, Asuman; Turhal, Uğur; Nabiyev, Vasif
Biometric recognition systems are frequently used in daily life although they are vulnerable to attacks. Today, especially the increasing use of face authentication systems has made these systems the target of face presentation attacks (FPA). This has increased the need for sensitive systems detecting the FPAs. Recently surgical masks, frequently used due to the pandemic, directly affect the performance of face recognition systems. Researchers design face recognition systems only from the eye region. This motivated us to evaluate the FPA detection performance of the eye region. Based on this, in cases where the whole face is not visible, the FPA detection performance of other parts of the face has also been examined. Therefore, in this study, FPA detection performances of facial regions of wide face, cropped face, eyes, nose, and mouth was investigated. For this purpose, the facial regions were determined and normalized, and texture features were extracted using powerful texture descriptor local binary patterns (LBP) due to its easy computability and low processing complexity. Multi-block LBP features are used to obtain more detailed texture information. Generally uniform LBP patterns are used for feature extraction in the literature. In this study, the FPA detection performances of both uniform LBP patterns and all LBP patterns were investigated. The size of feature vector is reduced by principal component analysis, and real/fake classification is performed with support vector machines. Experimental results on NUAA, CASIA, REPLAY-ATTACK and OULU-NPU datasets show that the use of all patterns increased the performance of FPA detection.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ3Socio-economic determinants of environmental degradation: Empirical evidence for the Environmental Kuznets Curve
Gültekin, Ömer Faruk; Sayar, Ramazan; Ari, Yllmaz Onur
The aim of the paper is to examine socio-economic determinants of environmental degradation. The empirical study employs quantile regression which enables separate predictions for different levels of the dependent variable to be made. This study investigated 62 countries from low, middle and some high income countries for 1995-2019. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) is verified for the aforemented countries in analyzing the relationship between economic growth and carbon emissions using quantile regression. The study also revealed that the schooling rate has a pollution-increasing effect. In addition to the reducing effects of trade openness, democracy, and economic freedom variables on environmental degradation, the opposite effect of life expectancy at birth is observed, increasing environmental degradation. In this context, this paper concluded that the EKC hypothesis is not supported. The government should encourage pollution-reducing policies in low and middle income countries.

Çelik, Saffet; Gerçek, Yusuf Can; Kutlu, Naciye; Bayram, Sinan; Kırkıncı, Seran; Ecem Bayram, Nesrin
In this study, different deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were used for vitamin extraction from bee pollen. The DES combination with the highest total amount of individual vitamins was choline chloride: ethylene glycol (molar ratio 1:2). The response surface method was then used to optimize the extraction conditions. The independent variables used for optimization were ultrasonic power, time, and temperature, while the dependent variables were the total individual amino acids, total individual phenolic compounds, and total individual vitamin contents. Spectrophotometric analyses and antimicrobial activity were also determined in the extracts. In addition, AGREEprep, ComplexGAPI and BAGI tools were used to evaluate the greenness of the method. The results obtained with DES were compared with water, ethanol, and methanol extracts, which were considered control groups. As a result of optimization, the optimum conditions were found to be 75 % for ultrasonic power, 71.5 min for sonication time, and 40 °C for ultrasonic bath temperature. The model's composite desirability value (d) was found to be 0.81. The predicted value and the experimental values were close to each other. Furthermore, the most dominant vitamin in DES extracts was ascorbic acid, the most dominant amino acid was proline, and the most dominant phenolic compound was myricetin. The amounts of these compounds were higher than those obtained from water, ethanol, and methanol extracts. The spectrophotometric analysis results obtained higher yields with DES compared to the control groups. Antimicrobial activity analysis showed that pollen extracts prepared using choline chloride: ethylene glycol had a weak inhibitory effect for Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria but not yeast-like fungal strains. In conclusion, DES has been successfully used to extract vitamins and other bioactive compounds from bee pollen. The results obtained showed that DESs can be an alternative to organic solvents for the extraction of vitamins, which are among the minor components of bee pollen. Besides, the potential of the application different DESs for more efficient extraction of vitamins and components with important pharmaceutical properties from bee pollen needs to be evaluated in detail.

This paper investigates the artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the dimensionless parameters for contact pressures and contact lengths under the rigid punch, the initial separation loads, and the initial separation distances of a contact problem. The problem consisted of two elastic infinitely layers (EL) loaded by means of a rigid cylindrical punch and resting on a half-infinite plane (HP). Firstly, the problem was formulated and solved theoretically using the Theory of Elasticity (ET). Secondly, the contact problem was extended based on the ANN. External load, the radius of punch, layer heights, and material properties were created by giving examples of different values used at the training and test stages of ANN. Finally, the accuracy of the trained neural networks for the case was tested using 134 new data, generated via ET solutions to determine the best network model. ANN results were compared with ET results, and well agreements were achieved.

Background Needle-related procedures are commonly performed in childhood and lead to considerable pain. Purpose This randomized controlled study was conducted to compare the effects on venipuncture pain of the Buzzy, an informational animated video, multiple interventions, and standard care in children aged 6-12 years. Methods One hundred eighty children were assigned to the groups using a computerized randomization program. Pain level was evaluated by the children, parents, and their nurses using the Wong-Baker Faces Pain Scale. The level of agreement among the nurse, parents, and children's pain reports was evaluated. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to identify the factors significantly associated with pain score. Results The participants in the Buzzy, video watching, and multiple intervention groups reported lower mean pain scores (child: KW = 28.24, p <.001; parent: KW = 18.51, p <.001; nurse: KW = 44.4, p <.001) than their peers in the control group. Moreover, age was identified as a risk factor affecting pain level (OR = 1.375, 95% CI [1.086, 1.740]; p =.008). Conclusions Buzzy and informational videos are potentially effective methods to facilitate venipuncture-related pain management in children. The use of pain management methods during venipuncture is recommended, especially in children younger than 10 years old.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ3Comparison of Superconducting Properties of Bulk MgB2 Samples with Pyrene Additive Produced by B Powder and C encapsulated B Powder
Erdem, Özge
In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of using B powder and C encapsulated B powder as a precursor during the production process of MgB2 with the addition of pyrene (C16H10) were investigated. Two MgB2 bulk samples with the addition of 10 wt % C16H10 of 1 g MgB2 were produced by the in-situ method using B powder and C encapsulated B powder. The C encapsulated B powder as a precursor was prepared by adding 10% C16H10 as a C source. From XRD and SEM analysis, a greater increase in MgO phase and a greater decrease in a-lattice parameter were observed for the sample produced with B, compared to the sample produced with C encapsulated B. The curves of critical current density (Jc) at 5 K showed a similar character for both samples. The Jc values at 5 K in self field were respectively obtained as 1.52 × 105 A/cm2 and 1.90 × 105 A/cm2 for the samples produced by B and C encapsulated B. The decrement ratio of in-field Jc at 20 K was less affected by increasing magnetic field for the sample produced using C encapsulated B due to the relatively higher increase in the irreversibility field (Hirr) and the upper critical magnetic field (Hc2) values. The Jc values at 20 K and 3 T were respectively determined as 1.49 × 104 A/cm2 and 1.93 × 104 A/cm2 for the samples produced with B and C encapsulated B.

In this paper, a special identity for twice differentiable functions, which is available in the literature, is utilized. By combining this identity with Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals, various fractional Milne-type inequalities are obtained for functions whose second derivatives in absolute value are s−convex in the second sense. Moreover, Hölder and Young inequalities are used to prove the different and original results. These approaches contribute to the analysis of s−convex functions and offer new perspectives in the field of fractional analysis.

Filiz, Tunahan; Demir, Mustafa; Kaya, Metin
Evaluating the impacts of instructional intervention programs on students with reading difficulties is important for setting guidelines to teachers, researchers, and policy-makers. The aim of this research is to examine how these interventions initiatives impact the reading abilities of students diagnosed with reading difficulties (RD). 38 impact sizes obtained from 17 meta-analysis studies are analysed with second order meta-analysis method. These studies included are carried out between 1999 and 2023, and focus on the effects of instructional intervention programs on the reading abilities of individuals who experience difficulties in reading. Finally, in the analysis, it is decided that the impact of instructional intervention programmes on students with RD is mid-range (g=.50). Also, instructional intervention programs caused important differences according to the type of intervention, quality level, and the year of publication on the reading abilities of individuals with RD. It is determined that comprehension strategy instruction (CSI) intervention programs are more efficient than foundational reading skills instruction (FRSI) and multicomponent instruction (MI) intervention programs. It is necessary to make more experimental studies to determine if instructional interventions cause meaningful differences in terms of the characteristics of participant students. It can also be beneficial to carry out primary meta-analysis studies that test the impact of instructional interventions on the reading abilities of individuals with RD who are determined with standardized tests.

Uçurum, Metin; Özdemir, Akın
The demand for ultra-fine mineral powders from various industries requires the applications of wet grinding and surface modification. In this study, wet mechanochemical surface modification of micronized calcite (d50 = 4.92 μm) with stearic acid [CH3(CH2)16COOH] was carried out in a planetary ball mill. The seven parameters were specified: ball filling ratio (%), ball size distribution ratio (10 and 15 mm, %), micronized calcite filling ratio (%), pulp solid ratio (wt%), mill speed (rpm), stearic acid dosage (% of micronized calcite) and modification time (min). Then, these parameters were optimized using a conventional experimental design when maximizing the active ratio (%) as a significant value for coated calcite. Besides, the analytical hierarchy process was applied to observe the importance of each parameter. Stearic acid dosage, mill speed, and micronized calcite filling ratio are the top three parameters affecting the active ratio. Next, size distribution, XRF, XRD, SEM, FTIR, TGA-DTA, contact angle, and whiteness measurements were performed on the micronized calcite (MC) and coated micronized calcite (CMC) samples. The final CMC product had a 99.90% active ratio, 2.49 μm mean (d50) particle size, and 101.66o contact angle. Finally, CMC obtained by the surface modification can be used as a filler mineral.

- Kitap BölümüAçık Erişim2023Isothiocyanates as drug candidates in cancer prevention and treatment
Saylan, Demet; Cebeci, Fatma
Cancer is the second most common cause of death worldwide. Many methods such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, etc. are being used for treatment. Most patients have a combination treatment with chemotherapy along with surgery or radiotherapy or both. Chemotherapy kills cancer cells by preventing them from reproducing, growing, and spreading in the body. Recently, safer alternatives to chemotherapy have been discovered and developed, as most of the drugs used in cancer treatment have side effects and a serious impact on patient comfort. As an alternative, the phytochemicals found in daily consumed plants are attractive candidates for clinical/pre-clinical evaluation because of their higher safety. In this context, certain degradation products of glucosinolates (isothiocyanates) are promising agents for cancer prevention and treatment.

In this study, the effects of various physical, chemical, and technological properties of sheep tail fat (fresh and ghee) as well as different storage durations, storage temperatures, and the use of additives on the storage stability of thermally processed sheep tail fat (ghee tail fat) were investigated. To prevent lipid oxidation and other degradation factors during use after long-term storage, salt and antioxidant additives were used. Samples were stored in glass jars at 25ºC, +4ºC, and -18ºC for 90 days. The moisture, protein, fat, and ash contents of fresh tail fat was determined as 11.2%, 3.47%, 85.0%, and 0.07%, respectively. In clarified fat, the moisture content was determined as 0.4%, protein content as 2.98%, fat content as 96.0%, and ash content as 0.05%. Additionally, the cholesterol content in tail fat was 60 mg/100 g in fresh tail fat and 58 mg/100 g in ghee tail fat. The pH values of fats were determined as 5.7 in fresh samples and 6.2 in ghee samples. The fatty acid compositions of samples revealed that the dominant fatty acid groups in both fresh and ghee sheep tail fat were palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids. Fresh tail fat stored at room temperature deteriorated in terms of chemical properties (FFA, peroxide, and TBA) within 7 days, while those stored at +4ºC deteriorated within 15 days. However, thermally processed samples were preserved without deterioration for 60 days at these storage temperatures.

In the present study, the leaf and scape anatomical features of ten Androsace taxa distributed in Türkiye were defined to contribute to plant identification. Hand sections from both the scape and leaf examined 43 anatomical characters. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were performed for the first time for Androsace. The results show that there are differences as well as similarities between Androsace species. It is noteworthy that Androsace artvinensis forms a separate main group with HCA. In addition, the fact that two of the five basic components are represented by a single variable according to the PCA results suggests that the anatomical characters examined are determinative for Androsace taxa.). In PCA, eigenvalues of PC1 (2.435), PC2 (1.749), PC3 (1.369), PC4 (1.223), and PC5 (1.006) were greater than 1.0. Cortex width, aerenchyma, arrangement of vascular bundles, and four-branched non-glandular hairs are among the important anatomical characteristics of the scape. Leaf cross-sectional shape, epidermis dimensions, glandular hair types, presence of five branched non-glandular hairs, stoma sizes, presence of crystals in the mesophyll, and types are among the qualitative and quantitative anatomical characteristics that attract attention in the leaf. This study examined almost all taxa of the genus Androsace distributed in Türkiye. The results will be important in finding new species among the examined taxa and revealing the anatomical features of the taxa for the first time. They will contribute to other studies on the genus.

Ozden, Erdemalp; Yaprakli, Sevda
Developing economies need to support strategic sectors that will transform their productive structures to ensure development. Therefore, the ability of these strategic sectors to produce exportable products is essential. This study follows a different path to determine strategically important export sector and products for Turkey, one of the countries struggling with the middle-income trap for a while. This different path is a hybrid method by combining the results of Bayesian econometrics with the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method, one of the multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods. As a result, the export sector that should be prioritized is transportation, and export products are cars and vehicle parts. By applying the hybrid method in this study to other countries, strategic sectors and goods can be determined.

Taş, Recep; Köroğlu, Ebru; Karakuş, Ahmet; Bülbül, Ali Savaş; Taş, Nilay Akkuş
Metal nanoparticles that are widely studied in optoelectronics, catalysis, medicine, and sensors offer remarkable optical and electronic properties. To address the cost and environmental concerns associated with their synthesis, this study employs an environmentally friendly method using Laureus nobilis extract to produce silver and zinc nanoparticles, which are prominent in nanotechnology. This study includes investigations of factors such as reaction time, AgNO3/laurel ratio, Zn(Ac)2 H2O/laurel ratio and temperature in nanoparticle biosynthesis to optimize the process. The next stage was set to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of these nanoparticles, specifically against the methylene blue dye under dark and UV light conditions. Parameters such as pollutant decomposition, degradation rate, catalyst stability, and nanoparticle recovery were analysed. Structural characterization of the obtained nanoparticles was performed using UV-Vis, FTIR, SEM, and XRD techniques. The photocatalytic results showed significant degradation percentages for LB-AgNP (silver nanoparticles synthesized with Laureus nobilis extract) (97.5%) and LB-ZnNP (zinc nanoparticles synthesized with Laureus nobilis extract) (90.9%). LB-ZnNP showed superior performance. Therefore, LB-AgNP and LB-ZnNP are promising photocatalysts for water purification and the elimination of toxic organic pollutants.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ1Performance of fly ash-blended Portland cement concrete developed by using fine or coarse recycled concrete aggregate
Şimşek, O.; Pourghadri Sefidehkhan, H.; Gökçe, H.S.
The recycling of concrete and industrial wastes in the production of new concrete structures has increased its share due to the growing environmental concerns of the world. In this study, the use of recycled concrete aggregate at various replacement amounts (0–100 %) was investigated to be fine or coarse aggregate sources instead of crushed natural aggregate to understand better its effects on the dimensional stability and durability aspects of fly ash-blended Portland cement concrete. In the presence of recycled concrete aggregate, fly ash was very important for eliminating possible mechanical losses of concrete at 90 days. The use of coarse recycled concrete aggregate resulted in better compressive strength values of concrete exposed to with and without wetting–drying and freezing-thawing cycles when compared to fine ones. While the free drying shrinkage of concrete increased at significant amounts (68 and 79 %) for fine and coarse recycled concrete aggregate, the restrained drying shrinkage crack widths were reduced up to by 13.5 %. In conclusion, it should be noted that the amount and size of recycled concrete aggregate need to be designed by considering the residual quality and dimensional stability of concrete, which exposes weathering actions in place.
