Role of occupational self-efficacy and professional identity as mediators in the relationship between person-job fit and career sustainability among teachers

Demir, Mustafa; Yayla, Ibrahim Erdogan; Dombak, Kubra; Baloglu, Mustafa

Introduction Career sustainability has become increasingly important for teachers to maintain long-term professional engagement and effectiveness. This study examined the serial mediating roles of occupational self-efficacy and professional identity in the relationship between person-job fit and career sustainability among teachers. Methods The study employed a correlational survey design. A total of 390 teachers working in Turkiye participated in the study. Data were collected using the Career Sustainability Scale, the Person-Job Fit Scale, the Occupational Self-efficacy Scale, and the Perceived Professional Identity Scale. We tested the research hypotheses using a serial mediation analysis with Hayes' PROCESS Macro Model 6.Results The findings show positive and significant relationships among person-job fit, occupational self-efficacy, professional identity, and career sustainability. Although the direct effect of person-job fit on career sustainability is not statistically significant, the indirect effects via occupational self-efficacy and professional identity are significant. The serial mediation analysis further shows that person-job fit is related to teachers' occupational self-efficacy, which may, in turn, be related to their professional identity and, consequently, to career sustainability. Conclusion The findings indicate a significant indirect relationship between person-job fit and teachers' career sustainability, mediated by occupational self-efficacy and professional identity. These findings highlight the importance of holistically considering person-job fit, occupational self-efficacy, and professional identity for teacher career sustainability.

Attitudes of physical education teachers in inclusive schools towards teaching autistic students: a phenomenological study

Oğur, Yekta Göksel; Yarımkaya, Erkan; Aydemir, Uğur; Kul, Murat

With the increasing presence of autistic students in inclusive schools, understanding the attitudes of physical education (PE) teachers towards teaching these students has become important. The current study aimed to examine the attitudes of PE teachers in inclusive schools towards teaching autistic students using the theory of planned behavior. The participants of this phenomenological-qualitative study were 16 PE teachers who participated in one-on-one semi-structured telephone interviews. The interviews were transcribed for analysis and later analyzed using thematic line-by-line analysis. The findings revealed that the majority of PE teachers in inclusive schools had negative attitudes towards teaching autistic students. Barriers and challenges during teaching autistic students were more dominant for PE teachers than facilitators. The results highlighted the importance of addressing the barriers and challenges that limit the quality of PE teachers’ teaching experiences with autistic students as a way to improve PE teachers’ attitudes and indicated the need to establish an adapted PE teacher definition, especially in countries such as Türkiye.

A Step towards Sustainable Education: Does an Entrepreneurial Teacher Nurture Creativity?

Saygın, Muhammet; Say, Serkan; Öztürk, İsmail Yavuz; Gülden, Bahadır; Kaplan, Kadir

This study explores the relationship between teachers’ entrepreneurial behaviors and their creativity-nurturing behaviors, with a particular emphasis on sustainability in education. While previous studies have typically examined entrepreneurship and creativity as separate concepts, often focusing on their individual dimensions, this study underscores the significance of integrating entrepreneurial and creative competencies to promote sustainable educational practices. By highlighting how teachers’ entrepreneurial and creative skills contribute to sustainable education, this study addresses the broader impact these competencies have on meeting the evolving needs and expectations of students, families, and society. This approach supports the development of a more resilient and adaptive education system that can thrive over time. The research involved 1396 classroom teachers from the Mersin province of Turkey. Analysis of the data revealed a strong positive correlation between teachers’ entrepreneurial behaviors and their creativity-nurturing behaviors, indicating that teachers who exhibit higher levels of entrepreneurial traits are more likely to engage in practices that foster creativity or that teachers who exhibit higher levels of creativity nurturing behaviors are more likely to engage in entrepreneurial practices among their students. Thus, the importance of the high-level relationship between entrepreneurial behaviors and creativity-enhancing behaviors in improving sustainability in education has been revealed. This study highlights the need to integrate entrepreneurial skills into teaching practices to support a sustainable educational framework.

Development of teacher academic optimism scale: The validity and reliability study

    Ergen, Yusuf; Elma, Cevat

The study aims to develop a valid and reliable academic optimism scale that can be used to determine teachers' academic optimism levels. The study was conducted through a total number of 404 primary school teachers who worked in the central districts of Malatya Province during 2014-2015 academic year. The content validity and face validity of the scale were determined via expert recommendations. An explanatory factor analysis and a confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to determine the construct validity of the scale. After the expert opinions, 80 items reduced to 64 and the data was collected by the use of these 64 items. An exploratory factor analysis revealed 5 factors reducing 64 items in to 33 and explaining 58.56% of the total variation in the data. The five-factor model obtained through an explanatory factor analysis after removal of one item as a result of the confirmatory factor analysis was observed to be highly consistent. Different from previous related research, the result showed that a new dimension as "Maneger Trust" emerged as a part of "Teacher Academic Optimism Scale". And finally this scale could be used as a valid and reliable instrument in the future studies.

Primary school teacher candidates’ metaphorical perceptions related to multigrade classes concept; [Sınıf öğretmeni adaylarının birleştirilmiş sınıf kavramına ilişkin metaforik algıları]

    İlter, İlhan

The purpose of the present study was to determine the teacher candidates’ perceptions related to ‘multigrade classes’ concept through metaphors. The study was conducted with the students who studied at their fourth (final) year in the Primary School Teaching Program, Faculty of Education at University of Bayburt in 2013-2014 academic year. The participants of the study were composed of 78 teacher candidates in total, 36 of them were girls and 42 of them were boys. The data collected in the research were obtained through an interview form in which there was an incomplete sentence like “The multigrade classes resemble…because…” In the process of collecting data, the teacher candidates were asked to write metaphors related to multigrade classes with the first justifications coming to their minds. In this study, phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used and the research data were analyzed by means of the content analysis technique. According to the findings, the teacher candidates developed 60 different and valid metaphors in total about multigrade classes. The metaphors were classified under six different conceptual categories. These categories were classified in the form of multigrade classes as diversity in social-cognitive level and abilities, the process of challenging struggle, complementary-supportive service environment, source of life, family atmosphere and hierarchical order. It was found that the most preferred metaphors developed by the teacher candidates were extended family, family, flower garden, lush forest and Ashura.
