This study investigated the impact of two extraction methods, traditional hydrodistillation (TDH) and microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAH), on the essential oil yield and chemical profile of Lavandula angustifolia L., as well as the bioactive potential of the resulting wastewater. Essential oil composition was analyzed via GC–MS, revealing similar qualitative and quantitative profiles for both methods, with α-terpinolene and (–)borneol as major constituents. Wastewater analysis via LC–MS/MS and spectrophotometric assays demonstrated the presence of significant total phenolic content (3.29–1.78 mg GAE/g) and 32 individual phenolics (463.1 µg/kg for TDH; 479.33 µg/kg for MAH). These findings suggest that both essential oil and wastewater obtained by either method possess considerable bioactive potential, with the MAH method potentially offering advantages over TDH for essential oil extraction. Further exploration of wastewater applications in various industrial sectors is warranted.

This study aimed to determine the volatile profile by GC-MS and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil isolated from Thymus nummularius using the microwave-assisted hydrodistillation method and morphologically characterize the glandular trichomes in leaf samples. Obtained essential oil, as well as wastewater obtained during essential oil isolation, were chemically (polyphenolic compounds, organic acids, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity) characterized. As a result of GC-MS analysis of the essential oil, different ratios of essential oil components were identified, predominantly thymol (38.91%), linalool (13.12%) and geraniol (6.51%). The antimicrobial activity results showed that T. nummularius essential oil has a broad-spectrum inhibitory effect against all target microorganisms (bacteria and yeast-like fungi). Screening of 32 polyphenolic compounds and 52 organic acids in the wastewater was performed by LC-MS/MS and the major polyphenolic compound and organic acid were determined as caffeic acid (97316.85 µg/kg) and malic acid (6898.88 mg/kg), respectively. While the total phenolic and flavonoid content of the wastewater were 35.91 mg GA/g and 34.91 mg QE/g, respectively, the antioxidant activity results were obtained using the CUPRAC, CERAC and ABTS tests were 86.28 mg TE/g, 72.85 mg TE/g and 47.88 mg TE/g. These results support that the T. nummularius, an important production area in Turkey, can be used in different industrial areas due to its rich bioactive content. In addition, it can be said that wastewater is also considered a valuable source of bioactive substances.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3Investigation of the recovery efficiency of CeUF method through RT-qPCR quantification of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 in untreated wastewater

Wastewater-based disease monitoring is an early warning system and a surveillance tool for infectious disease outbreaks regarding pathogens with pandemic potential. This study aimed at investigating the recovery efficiency of centrifugal ultrafiltration (CeUF), which is one of the most-used virus concentration methods, for inactive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavi-rus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) added to wastewater. Inactivated SARS-CoV-2 was inoculated into untreated wastewater at different concentrations (4 × 103, 8 × 103, 16 × 103, 24 × 103 and 32 × 103 gene copy/ µL) and concentrated through ultrafiltration with a disposable centrifugal filter device. Total nucleic acids in concentrated filtrates were extracted and isolated by an automated system. In isolates, total RNA was measured by a UV/VIS spectrophotometer, and the recovered virus was quanti-fied by RT-qPCR with two gene regions (N1 and N2). The recovery rates were between 11% and 17.8% (mean 15.1%, CV below 15%). While there were positive correlations among the inoculated virus, total RNA and recovered virus, there was no correlation and linearity between the recovery rates. Despite limited recovery rates, CeUF integrated with RT-qPCR quantification can be a valid assay for monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, and an early warning system.

- MakaleYalnız künye2013Scopus SJRQ3Bacteria-modified red mud for adsorption of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions

Cadmium is a toxic metal widely used in industry and it enters the environment from electroplating, smelting, alloy manufacturing, pigments, plastics, cadmium-nickel batteries, fertilizers, pesticides, mining, pigments and dyes, textile operations, and refining industries. Considering the harmful effects of cadmium, it is necessary to remove cadmium from liquid wastes at least to the limit accepted by regulations. The present study describes removal of cadmium from aqueous solutions using bacteria-modified red mud waste material. Batch adsorption experiments have been performed as a function of pH, contact time, temperature, and adsorbent dosage. The optimum results were obtained at pH 4.0, contact time of 60 min, temperature of 30°C, and an adsorbent dose of 1 mg/mL. The adsorption data was correlated with Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir adsorption model was 83.034 mg/g. The kinetic processes of cadmium adsorption on bacteria-modified red mud were described by applying pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order rate equations. The kinetic data for the adsorption process obeyed pseudo-second-order rate equations. Various thermodynamic parameters, such as ΔG°, ΔH°, and Δ15° were calculated and the negative value of ΔG° obtained indicate that the process was spontaneous, and the positive value of ΔH° confirms the reaction to be endothermic, and the positive value of ΔS° shows that the decrease in the degree of freedom of the adsorbed species. The bacteria-modified red mud investigated in this study exhibited a high potential for the removal of cadmium from aqueous solutions.

- MakaleYalnız künye2011Scopus SJRQ1Waste utilization: The removal of textile dye (Bomaplex Red CR-L) from aqueous solution on sludge waste from electrocoagulation as adsorbent
Yilmaz, Alper Erdem; Boncukcuoglu, Recep; Kocakerim, Muhtar; Karakas, Ibrahim Hakki
The potential of removing Bomaplex Red CR-L dye from electro coagulation sludge has been investigated for different Bomaplex Red CR-L concentrations with varying adsorbent amount, temperature, pH and stirrer speed. Removal of Bomaplex Red CR-L is found to be high at lower pH values. The maximum adsorption of the dye has been achieved in aqueous solutions using 0.5g of calcinated sludge from electro coagulation at a pH of 2.0 within 20min. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were tested and it was found that the Langmuir equation was fitted better than the Freundlich equation. Maximum adsorption capacity (q m) was calculated as 192.31mg g -1 at 333K. In addition, the adsorption data obtained at various temperatures were successfully applied to pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. The rates of adsorption were found to conform to pseudo second-order kinetics with good correlation (R 2≥0.9997). This study showed that calcinated the sludge from electrocoagulation has a highly adsorbent capacity.
