    Guleryuz, Didem

Industrialization and urbanization are increasing with the effect of globalization worldwide. The waste management problems are rising with the rising population rate, industrialization, and economic developments in the cities, which turned into environmental problems that directly affect human health. This study aims to examine waste management performance in the districts located in the city of Istanbul. To ensure that the districts are clustered in terms of the similarities and differences base on waste management. On this occasion, the authorized unit managers of the districts in the same cluster will be able to establish similar management policies and make joint decisions regarding waste management. In addition, the division of districts into clusters according to the determining indicators can provide information about the locations of waste storage centers. Also, these clusters will form the basis for the optimization constraints required to design appropriate logistics networks. Waste management performance of 39 districts in Istanbul in 2019 was compared by taking into consideration domestic waste, medical waste, population, municipal budget, and mechanical sweeping area. The data were obtained from The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and Turkey Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT). One of the non-hierarchical clustering methods, the K-means clustering method, was applied using IBM SPSS Modeler data mining software to determine the relations between 39 districts. As a result, the waste management performance of the districts was evaluated according to the statistical data, similarities and differences were revealed by using the determined indicators.

An evaluatıon on relocatıon and exproprıatıon problem caused by dam project ın çoruh valley

Yıldız, Seçil Gül Meydan; Şengün, Hayriye

Dam Projects occupy a significant part of the public investments in Turkey. The dams have an important role in efficient use of the water as a source of life beside usage of it as a renewable energy source. Physical, social, economical and environmental problems emerge during and after construction of the dams for power generation and irrigation purposes. In order to minimize negative influences of investment projects to be realized by collective expropriation in the scope of public investments, execution of relocation applications additional to expropriation or as an alternative of expropriation procedure has become an inevitable socioeconomical fact. Changing of settlement areas located in the reservoir fields of the dams and expropriation of the affected private lands are leading significant social and physical problems. Relocation of the families whose settlements (properties) are expropriated, the projects applied in new settlement areas, rearrangement of economical and social life are problematic processes taking time and requiring huge economic resources. Beside relocation problems, changes occur in eco systems because of the dams. In this study, relocation and expropriation problems caused by Artvin, Muratlı, Deriner, Borçka and Yusufeli dams which are among the dam Projects in the valley of Çoruh shall be studied using literature review method.

A Differential Evolution Algorithm-Based Traffic Control Model for Signalized Intersections

    Cakici, Ziya; Murat, Yetis Sazi

Sustainable management of traffic flows at signalized intersections is an important issue in terms of traffic engineering. The minimization of lost time, emission, fuel consumption, etc., can be achieved by optimization-based intersection management. In this study, a new traffic signal control model is developed for the management of three-leg signalized intersections. In the proposed model, signal timing and signal phasing are optimized simultaneously using Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm which is one of the population-based metaheuristic algorithms. The effectiveness of the model is tested on sample traffic scenarios with VISSIM simulation software considering average vehicle delay performance criteria. Results show that the proposed approach may reduce the average vehicle delay between the rates of 28%-42% and 3%-38% comparing to the optimum fixed-time signal control and vehicle-actuated signal control for tested scenarios, respectively.

Artar, Musa; Çoban, Keziban; Yurdakul, Muhammet; Can, Ömer; Yilmaz, Fatih; Yildiz, Mehmet B.

In this study, seismic vulnerability assessment and seismic isolation retrofit of Bayburt Yakutiye Mosque is investigated. Bayburt Yakutiye Mosque was built in the early 19th century at about 30-meter distance to Coruh river in the center of Bayburt in Turkey. The walls of historical masonry structure were built with regional white and yellow stones and the domes of the mosque was built with masonry bricks. This study is completed in four basic phases. In first phase, experimental determination of the regional white stone used in the historical structure are investigated to determine mechanical properties as modulus of elasticity, poison ratio and compression strengths etc. The required information of the other materials such as masonry brick and the regional yellow stone are obtained from literature studies. In the second phase, three dimensional finite element model (FEM) of the historical masonry structure is prepared with 4738 shell elements and 24789 solid elements in SAP2000 software. In third phase, the vulnerability assessment of the historical mosque is researched under seismic loading such as Erzincan (13 March 1992), Kocaeli (17 August 1999) and Van (23 November 2011) earthquakes. In this phase, the locations where damage can occur are determined. In the final phase, rubber base isolators for seismic isolation retrofit is used in the macro model of historical masonry mosque to prevent the damage risk. The results of all analyses are comparatively evaluated in details and presented in tables and graphs. The results show that the application of rubber base isolators can prevent to occur the destructive effect of earthquakes.

Strategies for ideal indoor environments towards low/zero carbon buildings through a biomimetic approach

Cuce, Erdem; Nachan, Zaid; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Sher, Farooq; Neighbour, Gareth B.

Biomimicry is a relatively new discipline of applied science that seeks inspiration from natural systems for innovative solutions to human problems. Taking nature as ‘model, mentor and measure’ receives wide acceptance in the field of architecture but predominantly in conceptualising novel forms. The biomimicry concept is comprehensively analysed for its ability to provide more sustainable and possibly even regenerative built environments. As part of this study, first, various frameworks for approaching ‘biomimicry’ in general are discussed and then relevant examples pertaining to architecture are evaluated. Case studies are critiqued with respect to varied levels of sustainability achieved and its causative factors. In the second part, an approach model for ‘biomimetic architecture’ in the context of Mumbai is presented and applicable strategies based on climatic adaptation are suggested using local biodiversity as a library of organisms. The generic example of ‘human skin’ addressing the same adaptation is analysed and complemented by a state-of-the-art case study on similar lines. The results achieved clearly reveal that biomimicry is a successful approach to design and operate the sustainable built environments for the buildings of the future.

Developing Statistical Optimization Models for Urban Competitiveness Index: Under the Boundaries of Econophysics Approach

Dönmez, Cem Çaǧri; Atalan, Abdulkadir; Locurcio, Marco

The purpose of this research was to establish the urban competitiveness index (UCI) by using the statistical optimization method for the econophysics approach. With this technique, economic data regarding urban areas and the factors affecting UCI have been determined. The research covers 30 urban centres located in 15 countries worldwide. Urban centres with the gross domestic product per capita of $10,000 or more were taken into consideration. The significant levels of the factors were determined with the statistical optimization method, and optimum values were calculated with the developed optimization models. Re-index values were calculated and compared with the results of PricewaterhouseCoopers and World Economic Forum. According to the results, the high UCI value of these locations depends not only on economic data but also on high values of social factors. Thus, those locations are becoming the centre of attraction for investments and capital with increasing competitiveness.

Dynamic analyses of experimentally-updated FE model of historical masonry clock towers using site-specific seismic characteristics and scaling parameters according to the 2018 Turkey building earthquake code

Genç, Ali Fuat; Ergün, Mustafa; Günaydin, M.; Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Ateş, Şevket; Okur, Fatih Yesevi; Mosallam, Ayman S.

This paper presents a dynamic analysis considering site-specific seismic characteristics for a masonry clock tower located at the city of Çorum, Turkey according to the new Turkish earthquake code. Finite element model of the tower was modeled using ANSYS software in order to determine numerical dynamic characteristics of the structure such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. Non-destructive experimental measurements were performed to extract the experimental dynamic characteristics. Experimental results were used as a reference parameter for finite element model updating to reflect the current structural behavior of clock tower. Model updating procedure was carried out by changing of initial material properties of structural stone elements, and maximum differences were reduced from 23.44% to 4.90%. Numerical results indicated that displacements have an increasing trend with the height of the clock tower. Furthermore, the maximum displacements occurred at the top point between the values of 18.88 mm to 42.5 mm. Numerical results also showed that both the maximum and minimum principal stresses occurred at the upper body (clock zone) walls and transition segment between the values of 1.08 MPa/2.86 MPa and − 0.87 MPa/−3.00 MPa, respectively. The maximum and minimum principal strains occurred at the upper body (clock zone) walls between the values of 0.65E-3/1.56E-3 and − 0.78E-3/−1.50E-3, respectively. It is also concluded that non-destructive experimental measurement is very useful method to evaluate in-situ structural identification, validate and update the initial finite element model for further analyses.

Determination of Earthquake Performance in Masonry Buildings (Bayburt Korkut Ata High School Example)

    Can, Ömer; Yıldızoğlu, Halime

There are many buildings which are historical and cultural values in Turkey. These structures are of great importance in terms of reflecting the accumulation and techniques of different times and cultures. It is possible to elaborate the performance of reinforced concrete and steel structures constructed with today's technology with advanced numerical methods. But difficulties can be encountered in determining and interpreting the structural performance due to the discontinuities and the changing material properties of the historic agglomerations. In this study; The construction technique, material properties and location features of Korkut Ata High School, which was built between 1944-1947 in Bayburt province center, was compiled. The existing problems observed in the structure have been identified. Using the StatiCAD-Masonry program, it was aimed to perform the performance analysis by taking into account the principles of the 2007 Earthquake Regulation and the 2013 Risky Buildings Regulation. Parallel to the analyzes carried out, the structural performance of the carrier system was evaluated.

Stochastic responses of isolated bridge with triple concave friction pendulum bearing under spatially varying ground motion

    Yurdakul, Muhammet; Ates, Sevket

This study aims to investigate the stochastic response of isolated and non-isolated highway bridges subjected to spatially varying earthquake ground motion model. This model includes wave passage, incoherence and site response effects. The wave passage effect is examined by using various wave velocities. The incoherency effect is investigated by considering the Harichandran and Vanmarcke coherency model. The site response effect is considered by selecting homogeneous firm, medium and soft soil types where the bridge supports are constructed. The ground motion is described by power spectral density function and applied to each support point. Triple concave friction pendulum (TCFP) bearing which is more effective than other seismic isolation systems is used for seismic isolation. To implement seismic isolation procedure, TCFP bearing devices are placed at each of the support points of the deck. In the analysis, the bridge selected is a five-span featuring cast-in-place concrete box girder superstructure supported on reinforced concrete columns. Foundation supported highway bridge is regarded as three regions and compared its different situation in the stochastic analysis. The stochastic analyses results show that spatially varying ground motion has important effects on the stochastic response of the isolated and non-isolated bridges as long span structures.

Green roofs and facades: A comprehensive review

    Besir, Ahmet B.; Cuce, Erdem

Based on United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), building sector accounts for 40% of total energy consumption. In European countries, 36% of total greenhouse gas emissions is attributed to buildings. In this respect, green roofs are considered to be one of the most appropriate sustainable solutions to resolve the urban heat island-related issues. Roofs account for nearly 20–25% of overall urban surface areas. Energy saving, thermal insulation, shading and evapotranspiration features highlight the key role of green roofs in overall thermal performance of buildings and microclimatic conditions of indoor environments. Within the scope of this research, the concept of green roofs and facades is comprehensively analysed in a holistic and thematic way. Following a historical overview of the technology, the research is split into various subfields such as energy saving in buildings through greenery systems, multifunctional thermal benefits including evapotranspiration, thermal insulation, shading and thermal comfort features, evaporative cooling for reducing cooling demand and minimising wind driven convection losses. The results achieved from the literature survey clearly indicate that green roofs and facades are key solutions to mitigate building-related energy consumptions and greenhouse gas emissions. According to the previous works, heat flow through the building roofs in summer can be reduced by approximately 80% via green roofs. The green roofs are reported to consume less energy in the range of 2.2–16.7% than traditional roofs during summer time. A similar tendency is observed for the winter season depending on regional and climatic conditions. The temperature difference between conventional and greens roofs in winter is found to be about 4 °C, which is remarkable. Energy demand of buildings in summer is highly dependent on the plant intensity as it is reported to be 23.6, 12.3 and 8.2 kWh/m2/year for extensive, semi-intensive and intensive greenery surface, respectively. Greenery systems are also capable of providing thermally comfortable indoor and outdoor conditions. It is underlined that the annual average accumulation of CO2 reaches the level of 13.41–97.03 kg carbon/m2 for 98 m2 of vertical greenery system. The results of this research can be useful for dwellers, builders, architects, engineers and policy makers to have a good understanding about the potential of green roofs and facades to mitigate building-related energy consumptions and carbon emissions in a renewable, sustainable, energy-efficient and cost effective way.

Toward cost-effective and energy-efficient heat recovery systems in buildings: Thermal performance monitoring

    Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem

Recent studies show that it is possible to reduce heating or cooling demand of a building as using heat recovery systems. Heat recovery technology is basically utilised to mitigate the heat loss, and hence energy consumption due to HVAC. Within the scope of this study, thermal comfort analyses of a test house integrated with a novel polycarbonate heat exchanger are conducted. At pre and post-retrofit case, temperature, relative humidity and CO2 measurements are carried out for a test period of one week. The results indicate that the internal CO2 concentration is not at desirable range due to lack of ventilation in the test house at the pre-retrofit case. However, following the integration of the novel ventilation system into the test house, CO2 concentration is found to be varying notably from 350 to 400 ppm which corresponds to the actual comfort conditions for indoor environments. It is also concluded from the results that the average relative humidity inside the test house at the post-retrofit case is found to be 57%, which is in the desired range whereas it is considerably high before retrofitting.

A smart building material for low/zero carbon applications: Heat insulation solar glass-characteristic results from laboratory and in situ tests

    Cuce, Erdem; Riffat, Saffa B.

Heat insulation solar glass (HISG) is a recently developed smart building material to minimize energy consumption of building sector. HISG might be presumed to be a conventional photovoltaic glazing product; however, it is completely unique by having some characteristic features such as superior thermal insulation, which is competitive with triple-glazed windows using argon as inert gas, acoustic and thermal comfort, self-cleaning ability owing to TiO2 nano-coating on module surface and extraordinary energy saving potential in both summer and winter. In our previous works, comprehensive experimental and numerical works have been carried out for power generation and thermal insulation performance of HISG under various climatic conditions. Within the scope of this research, optical- and lighting-related performance parameters of this smart building material are evaluated through extensive laboratory and in situ tests. Shading coefficient, visible light intensity, and UV and IR penetration are investigated via the tests conducted in real operating conditions. It is achieved from the results that the shading coefficient of HISG is only 0.136, which yields almost 80% reduction in solar heat gain compared with ordinary glazing. It is also observed from the in situ tests that HISG has a %100 UV and 99% IR blocking rate, which is of vital importance in terms of human health and thermal comfort conditions. Glaring effects are totally resolved via HISG, which is still a challenge for the buildings with conventional glazing products, especially in summer.

Thermal regulation impact of green walls: An experimental and numerical investigation

    Cuce, Erdem

Green walls can be basically defined as climbing plants grown either directly against, or on support structures integrated to external building walls. Similar to other types of green infrastructure, they are in the centre of interest owing to their remarkable benefits such as reducing internal building temperatures, mitigating building energy consumption and facilitating urban adaptation to a warming climate. In this research, thermal regulation feature of green wall systems is experimentally and numerically investigated through a case study conducted in the Jubilee Campus of University of Nottingham. Internal wall temperatures are measured time-dependently for different cases and the results are compared with those of ordinary walls for a reliable and realistic approach. Different sky conditions are also considered within the scope of this research as an independent variable. Experimental results are verified by numerical models carried out in Ecotect. The results reveal that an average of 2.5 °C reduction in internal wall temperature can be achieved via green walls with about 10 cm thick climbing vegetation of Hedera helix, which is very promising.

A novel roof type heat recovery panel for low-carbon buildings: An experimental investigation

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem; Riffat, Saffa

Energy saving and its efficient utilization is of prime interest in today's world due to the limited energy resources and growing significance of environmental issues. Despite the intensive efforts to narrow the gap between conventional energy sources (wood, coal, gas, oil, etc.) and renewables, renewable energy resources currently supply only about 14% of total world energy demand. In this regard, energy management and optimization are considered compulsory as much as the clean energy generation. Recent works indicate that the buildings play a significant role on global energy consumption. They are responsible for about 40% of global energy demand. Among the different building types, domestic buildings have the largest share with 63% and most of energy is utilized for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in those buildings. Energy consumption levels of buildings can be notably reduced through waste heat recovery in HVAC systems. There are several attempts in literature addressing the possibility of decreasing energy consumption of buildings via waste heat recovery technologies. The heat recovery technologies are cost effective and user friendly applications. The use of heat recovery systems aims at mitigating the energy consumption for HVAC applications as well as the greenhouse gas emissions, and hence decreasing the adverse effects of global warming on the Earth. It is well-documented in literature that the heat recovery systems are very promising for domestic applications. In this paper, experimental results of a novel heat recovery system developed for low-carbon buildings are presented. The proposed heat recovery system consists of a plate-type heat exchanger, blower fans and ducts. The parallel-flow arrangement is used to run the system. The system is designed as under roof application. The aim of the system is to recover waste heat and to preheat fresh air using stale air. The experiments of the system are carried out in winter season in Kent, UK. The study aims to investigate the coefficient of performance (COP) of the system as well as the heat recovery efficiency. The results show that the heat recovery efficiency of the proposed system is around 89% while the COP is 4.5. The proposed system can be used in both winter and summer conditions without requiring additional work. Its labor cost is extremely low, so it is cost-effective and user friendly.

Optimum design of steel space frames under earthquake effect using harmony search

    Artar, Musa

This paper presents an optimization process using Harmony Search Algorithm for minimum weight of steel space frames under earthquake effects according to Turkish Earthquake Code (2007) specifications. The optimum designs are carried out by selecting suitable sections from a specified list including W profiles taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The stress constraints obeying AISC- Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications, lateral displacement constraints and geometric constraints are considered in the optimum designs. A computer program is coded in MATLAB for the purpose to incorporate with SAP2000 OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface) to perform structural analysis of the frames under earthquake loads. Three different steel space frames are carried out for four different seismic earthquake zones defined in Turkish Earthquake Code (2007). Results obtained from the examples show the applicability and robustness of the method.

The impact of internal aerogel retrofitting on the thermal bridges of residential buildings: An experimental and statistical research

    Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert

In this research, internal thermal superinsulation in residential buildings is experimentally and statistically evaluated in terms of potential thermal bridging effects. As a consequence of significant deviations in thermal resistance values in buildings at post-retrofit, large amounts of heat losses occur through non-insulated building elements such as separating walls. Therefore, it is of vital importance to determine the level of energy loss due to such thermal bridges through an internal thermal superinsulation retrofit conducted in a typical UK building. 20 mm thick fibre-silica opaque aerogel blanket is implemented internally on the walls of a test bedroom, and the heat flux from the separating wall is measured and compared for the cases of pre and post-retrofit. The results reveal that the average amount of heat loss through the non-insulated separating wall at the post-retrofit is 5.86 W/m2, whereas it is only 0.66 W/m2 at the pre-retrofit. The results are also verified through a statistical model, which is presented for the first time in literature. The novel model is capable of providing information about potential energy loss from non-insulated walls as a function of location.

Experimental and numerical investigation of a novel energy-efficient vacuum glazing technology for low-carbon buildings

    Cuce, Erdem

In this study, a recently developed innovative window technology called vacuum tube window is introduced, and its performance assessment is presented through an experimental and numerical research. The novel design of vacuum tube window consists of evacuated tubes surrounded by Argon as inert gas to eliminate conductive and convective effects inside the window and thus to produce a building element with remarkably low overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value). Heat transfer inside the window was modelled via a reliable commercial computational fluid dynamics software ANSYS FLUENT. The accuracy of simulations was verified by environmental chamber tests. For the vacuum tube diameter of 28 mm, an excellent agreement between experimental and numerical data was achieved. For different values of design parameters such as pane thickness, tube thickness, tube diameter and Argon gap, total heat loss and U-value of the vacuum tube window and optimum data were evaluated. Optimum tube diameter was found to be 60 mm in terms of thermal performance characteristics, cost, lightness and aesthetic issues. It is concluded that the vacuum tube window is able to provide a U-value lower than 0.40 W/m2K, which is very promising for both retrofitting of existing buildings and new-build applications.

The main object of this study is to determine and compare the structural behavior of base isolated long span highway bridge, Gülburnu Highway Bridge, using single concave friction pendulum (SCFP) and triple concave friction pendulum (TCFP). The bridge is seismically isolated in the design phase to increase the main period and reduce the horizontal forces with moments using SCFP bearings. In the content of the paper, firstly three dimensional finite element model (FEM) of the bridge is constituted using project drawings by SAP2000 software. The dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies and periods, and the structural response such as displacements, axial forces, shear forces and torsional moments are attained from the modal and dynamic analyses. After, FEM of the bridge is updated using TCFP and the analyses are performed. At the end of the study, the dynamic characteristics and internal forces are compared with each other to extract the TCFP effect. To emphasize the base isolation effect, the non-isolated structural analysis results are added to graphics. The predominant frequencies of bridge non-isolated, isolated with SCFP and isolated with TCFP conditions decreased from 0.849Hz to 0.497Hz and 0.338Hz, respectively. The maximum vertical displacements are obtained as 57cm, 54cm and 44cm for non-isolated, isolated with SCFP and isolated with TCFP conditions, respectively. The maximum vertical displacement reduction between isolated with TCFP bearing and isolated with SCFP bearing bridge is %23. Maximum axial forces are obtained as 60619kN, 18728kN and 7382kN, maximum shear forces are obtained as 23408kN, 17913kN and 16249kN and maximum torsional moments are obtained as 24020kNm, 7619kNm and 3840kNm for non-isolated, isolated with SCFP and isolated with TCFP conditions, respectively.
