- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2Hybrid tabu search algorithm for weight optimization of planar steel frames
Tayfur, Bilal; Yilmaz, Hamid; Daloğlu, Ayşe T.
In this study, a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm called Hybrid Tabu Search (HTS) is proposed for the weight optimization of planar steel structures. The effectiveness of HTS lies in improving the initial conditions of a tabu search algorithm with a greedy search algorithm and a swap operator used in the phase of section selection. The effectiveness of the proposed method is tested and validated on three different benchmark examples. C♯ software is developed to perform the structural analyses. Numerical results obtained by using HTS showed that the proposed method achieved significantly lighter frame weights in most of the benchmark examples. When the method was examined in terms of computational efficiency, HTS was at a level that can compete with other algorithms examined within this study, although it did not provide a significant advantage.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2An I-optimal experimental design-embedded nonlinear lexicographic goal programming model for optimization of controllable design factors
Ozdemir, Akin
Optimal experimental designs are effective offline quality improvement techniques used to enhance existing products and develop new products for a constrained design region. For some practical situations, I-optimal experimental designs may be the most suitable way to construct optimal experimental design points, by addressing prediction variance to generate a measure of prediction performance over the non-standard experimental design region. The purpose of this article is three-fold: (1) the I-optimality criterion is selected for minimizing the average prediction variance; (2) fitted mean and variance response models are found; and (3) a nonlinear lexicographic goal programming model incorporating an I-optimal experimental design is proposed to find the optimum settings of controllable design factors. Comparison studies and a numerical example are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for improvement of the quality of products.

The aim of this study was to determine the physicochemical properties, bioactive substance content, and microbiological quality of sixty different honey samples collected from twelve different regions of Bayburt, Turkey. The samples were analyzed for their sugar, moisture, total phenolic, total flavonoid contents, and water activity, conductivity, pH values and colour, antiradical activity, and DSC properties. As a result of physicochemical analyses, it was determined that the samples examined complied with the standard values defined in the Turkish Food Codex in terms of the parameters examined. The results of the study showed that the total phenolic content (219.43-768.82 mg GAE kg−1), total flavonoid content (31.29-118.7 mg CAE kg−1) and DPPH (12.98%-94.79%) parameters differ widely among the honey samples. A principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to correlate the characteristics of honey with honey samples collected from different regions. This is the first comprehensive and original report about the physicochemical properties of honey produced in Bayburt, a region close to the Anzer region where the most expensive honey, Anzer honey, is produced.

Acet, Tuba; Özcan, Kadriye; Sefalı, Abdurrahman
Psephellus appendicigerus, is a plant endemic to Turkey, belonging to the Asteraceae family, which is traditionally used in folk medicine in Turkey. The aim of this study is to reveal for the first time the biological activities of this plant and evaluate its potential use as a natural product. For this reason, different extracts (ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane) of the plant’s aerial parts were used in determining the antioxidant (2,20-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assays), antimicrobial (disc diffusion and microdilution methods), and enzyme inhibition activity (calorimetric methods) related to diabetes (α-amylase and α-glucosidase). Moreover, the phenolic constituents were analysed by high performance liquid chromatography. Methanol extract of the plant exhibited significant biological activity compared to other extracts. This extract had the highest amount of chlorogenic acid as phenolic compound. In addition, all extracts showed inhibition against at least one test microorganism. According to the results, P. appendicigerus has the potential to be used as a natural antioxidant, antimicrobial and enzyme inhibitor.

Taşdemir, Volkan; Kalay, Erbay; Dertli, Enes; Şahin, Engin
Aromatic α-halohydrins, particularly 2-haloethanols as significant precursor of drugs, can easily be converted to chiral β-adrenergic receptor blockers. Eight strains of Lactobacillus curvatus were tested as biocatalysts for asymmetric reduction of 2-bromo-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethanone 1 to 2-bromo-1- (naphthalen-2-yl) ethanol 2. The parameters of the bioreduction were optimized using L. curvatus N4, the best biocatalyst found. As a result, (R)-2-bromo-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethanol 2, which can be β-adrenergic receptor blocker precursor, was produced for the first time in high yield and enantiomerically pure form using biocatalysts. Moreover, the gram scale synthesis was performed and 7.54 g of (R)-2 was synthesized as enantiopure form (enantiomeric excess >99%) in 48 h. The important advantages of this process are that it produces of (R)-2 for the first time in enantiopure form, in excellent yield and under environmentally friendly and moderate reaction conditions. This system is of the potential to be applied at a commercial scale.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ2A mathematical model and tabu search algorithm for multi-manned assembly line balancing problems with assignment restrictions
Yilmaz, Hamid; Yilmaz, Mustafa
A multi-manned assembly line is a set of workstations where task operations can be performed on multiple sides of the line. Such assembly lines are important for large products, such as buses, cars and trucks. In this study, a mathematical model for multi-manned assembly lines with assignment restrictions is proposed. The purpose of the mathematical model is to minimize the total number of workers and open multi-manned workstations along the line for a given cycle time simultaneously under various assignment restrictions. The model provides a more realistic situation for multi-manned assembly line problems. The tabu search algorithm (TSA) is also used to solve the problem. The performances of both methods on well-known data-set problems are analysed. Based on the computational experiments, the performance of the proposed TSA is compared with the mathematical model solutions on various problem instances. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed TSA.

Örs, İlker; Sarıkoç, Selçuk; Atabani, A.E.; Ünalan, Sebahattin
This paper aims to asses and conduct a comparative analysis of fuel properties, performance, emissions and combustion characteristics of biodiesel produced from waste cooking oil (B100) as a cheap biodiesel feedstock, along with a binary blend of biodiesel–diesel (B20) and ternary blends of biodiesel–diesel–butanol as substitutions to diesel fuel. Although biodiesel and n-butanol have some negative impacts on engine performance parameters, they generally positively affect exhaust emission parameters compared to euro diesel. B100 caused an average reduction in brake power and exhaust gas temperature of 15.16% and 1.4%, respectively, although it increased brake specific fuel consumption on average by 14.09%, at full throttle under different engine load conditions. B100 decreased CO and HC emissions and smoke opacity by 65.4%, 61.07% and 54.94%, respectively. However, CO2 and NO emissions increased by 22.3% and 23.91%, respectively. Addition of n-butanol decreased some of the fuel thermo-physical properties such as density, viscosity and flash point. The average decreases in brake power when n-butanol was added were 6.17%, 7.49% and 11%, respectively, coupled with increases in specific fuel consumption of 6.25%, 8.96% and 14.29%, respectively. The addition of n-butanol decreased exhaust gas temperatures, CO, HC, NO and smoke emissions.

The present study was aimed at investigating the effects of the dietary use of different doses of Moringa oleifera essential oil (MOEO) on performance parameters, internal organ weights and meat quality in Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) exposed to Heat Stress (HS). For this purpose, 320 male day-old quail chicks were used. Seven days of preliminary (physical exercise) and a 35-day fattening period were applied. The animals were divided into 8 groups, each including 40 animals according to temparature (C: 25 °C and SC: 37 °C) and dietary doses (C, 200, 400 and 600). Each group was divided into 4 subgroups, each comprising 10 animals. The consequences of this study showed that, in the stress-free (HSF) groups, while all of the different doses of dietary MOEO positively affected growth performance, feed intake and feed efficiency, in the HS groups, similar positive effects were observed with the use of 200 ppm of dietary MOEO. While no effect was detected on internal organ weights on Days 21 and 42 in the HSF and HS groups, a dose-dependent increase was determined in the intestinal pH value on day 42 in the HS group (p <.05). Additionally, in the analysis of meat quality on the 21st and 42 days compared to the controls, no effect was observed on the meat colour parameters value and TBARS level in the HS and HSF groups. Based on the consequences of this study, it is considered that, MOEO could be used as an alternative product in poultry, at a dose of 200 ppm, to reduce the detrimental effects of HS.HIGHLIGHTS Temperature stress, performance parameters and serious problems in the health of poultry. Moringa olifera helps regulate performance parameters in poultry exposed to heat stress. Since the addition of Moringa oleifera to the diets does not affect the organ weight and meat quality in 21 and 42 days, it does not cause any negative effects for the consumer.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of adding an essential fatty acid mixture (EOM; Eucalyptus globulus Labill, thymus vulgaris, Cymbopogon nardus, and Syzygium aromaticum) to the drinking water in the heat stress broilers on the adipokine (Apelin, BDNF) response, the histopathologic changes in liver and intestines, and some biochemical parameters. This study lasted for a total of 42days, including the physical exercise period (7days) and the fattening period (35days). A total of 400 Ross 308 male broilers (1-d-old) were randomly divided into 8 groups (50 animals per group), each of which was exposed to various conditions of temperature (C: 22°C and SC: 36°C) and treatment dose (C, 250, 500 and 750mL/1000 L). Each group was divided into 5 subgroups, each comprising 10 animals. In the stress-free groups, whereas the Apelin level linearly decreased, the BDNF level linearly increased. In histopathology, the liver tissue was found to be normal in all groups whereas the duodenum villi length was found to increase in the group of 750mL/1000 L. No statistically significant difference was found between the stressed groups and the non-stressed groups in terms of VLDL, Glucose, Total bilirubin, ALT, and TG (p >.05). While Apelin level increased in the stressed groups, the BDNF level increased in the group of 250mL/1000 L. In the histopathological examination, a small amount of coagulation necrosis was detected in hepatocyte, a diffuse hydropic degeneration was observed in hepatocytes, and finally a dilatation and hyperaemia were seen in sinusoid in the groups of EOM-500mL/1000 L and EOM-750 m/1000 L compared to the control group. Whereas there was no difference between the group of EOM-250mL/1000 L and the control group in terms of duodenum villa length, there was a significant decrease in other groups (p <.00). In conclusion, this study showed that adding 250mL/1000 L of EOM to the drinking water had a positive effect on the serum levels of Apelin and p-BDNF in the groups exposed to stress (p <.05).HIGHLIGHTS Heat stress results in serious annual economic losses in the poultry industry. Essential oil fatty mix acids have positive effects on poultry health. Apelin and BDNF may be a protective factor against deleterious consequences of chronic exposition to heat stress.

Literature that investigates the factors affecting problem-solving evaluates the cognitive and affective components, such as reading comprehension, metacognition, Mathematics anxiety, Mathematics attitude and Mathematics self-efficacy. Recently, studies have shown that Mathematics attitude and Mathematics self-efficacy as affective factors, and reading comprehension as a cognitive factor could play a crucial role in the problem-solving of middle school students. This study investigated the influence of reading comprehension skill, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitude on non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills. It is hypothesized that non-routine problem-solving skills are related to reading comprehension skills, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitudes. To achieve this aim, a reading comprehension skill test, a Mathematics self-efficacy perception scale, a Mathematics attitude scale and a non-routine problem-solving skill test were applied. The instruments were completed by 362 middle school students. A correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship of variables on non-routine problem-solving skills, and the predictive effects of the predictor variables on non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills were examined by hierarchical regression analysis. The analysis also showed that for middle-school students’ non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills, all related factors–reading comprehension, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitude were significant. Reading comprehension skills and Mathematics self-efficacy perception significantly predicted problem-solving skills, and both predictors explained a total of 22% of the total variance.

Cuce, Erdem; Oztekin, Erman Kadir; Cuce, Pinar Mert
In our previous works, it is clearly addressed that optimisation of fin profile is of vital importance in terms of the rate of heat transfer from a hot surface, and the optimisation procedure depends on several factors. Within the scope of this research, a longitudinal cylindrical fin profile is under interest for the optimisation research. The purpose is to investigate the effects of longitudinal parabolic perforations on the fin parameters such as temperature distribution, effectiveness and efficiency, in which the fin surface is cooled by natural convection and radiation. Different concavity levels are considered to form parabolic perforations. The rate of heat transfer from fin surface is numerically correlated with the fin mass with respect to different concavity levels. According to results, heat transfer from unit fin mass is enhanced with the new designs. The outcome of the study can be used to optimise the needs for particular applications by making a decision between heat loss and weight options. That is, the increase in the concavity level of the perforation results in a lighter and cheaper design, but yielding a lower heat loss. However, heat transfer from unit mass is still enhanced.

Erdoğan, Yaşar
Numerous flowering plants rely on bees for pollination. Any natural or anthropogenic factor that threatens colony survival can have a large impact on plant production. This study investigates the effects of manmade hives built from different materials and how these may influence colony growth. Ten each of three hive types were selected, wooden, polystyrene and composite insulated hives. Factors of adult bee numbers, brood development, nectar flow period weight gain, bee flight activity, aggression response, and honey yield were selected markers of hive development. Statistically, each hive type produced significant variation (p<.05). The greatest overall productivity across all factors was for insulated hives made of composite material, with honey production approximately 35% times that of wood, 14% times that of polystyrene and in terms of the development of honeybee colonies, the average of other hives is 10.2 times.Highlights Relative humidity and temperature are important environmental factors for honeybees. Insulated hives, increased honey yield. High temperature and humidity inside the hive made honeybees more aggressive.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ1Response surface optimization for a nonlinearly constrained irregular experimental design space
Ozdemir, Akin; Cho, Byung Rae
Finding optimum conditions for process factors in an engineering optimization problem with response surface functions requires structured data collection using experimental design. When the experimental design space is constrained owing to external factors, its design space may form an asymmetrical and irregular shape and thus standard experimental design methods become ineffective. Computer-generated optimal designs, such as D-optimal designs, provide alternatives. While several iterative exchange algorithms for D-optimal designs are available for a linearly constrained irregular design space, it has not been clearly understood how D-optimal design points need to be generated when the design space is nonlinearly constrained and how response surface models are optimized. This article proposes an algorithm for generating the D-optimal design points that satisfy both feasibility and optimality conditions by using piecewise linear functions on the design space. The D-optimality-based response surface design models are proposed and optimization procedures are then analysed.

Introduction. Shift patterns, work hours, work arrangements and worker motivations have increasingly become key factors for job performance. The main objective of this article is to design an expert system that identifies the negative effects of shift work and prioritizes mitigation efforts according to their importance in preventing these negative effects. The proposed expert system will be referred to as the shift expert. Methods. A thorough literature review is conducted to determine the effects of shift work on workers. Our work indicates that shift work is linked to demographic variables, sleepiness and fatigue, health and well-being, and social and domestic conditions. These parameters constitute the sections of a questionnaire designed to focus on 26 important issues related to shift work. The shift expert is then constructed to provide prevention advice at the individual and organizational levels, and it prioritizes this advice using a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process model, which considers comparison matrices provided by users during the prioritization process. An empirical study of 61 workers working on three rotating shifts is performed. After administering the questionnaires, the collected data are analyzed statistically, and then the shift expert produces individual and organizational recommendations for these workers.

Cuce, Erdem; Nachan, Zaid; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Sher, Farooq; Neighbour, Gareth B.
Biomimicry is a relatively new discipline of applied science that seeks inspiration from natural systems for innovative solutions to human problems. Taking nature as ‘model, mentor and measure’ receives wide acceptance in the field of architecture but predominantly in conceptualising novel forms. The biomimicry concept is comprehensively analysed for its ability to provide more sustainable and possibly even regenerative built environments. As part of this study, first, various frameworks for approaching ‘biomimicry’ in general are discussed and then relevant examples pertaining to architecture are evaluated. Case studies are critiqued with respect to varied levels of sustainability achieved and its causative factors. In the second part, an approach model for ‘biomimetic architecture’ in the context of Mumbai is presented and applicable strategies based on climatic adaptation are suggested using local biodiversity as a library of organisms. The generic example of ‘human skin’ addressing the same adaptation is analysed and complemented by a state-of-the-art case study on similar lines. The results achieved clearly reveal that biomimicry is a successful approach to design and operate the sustainable built environments for the buildings of the future.

Erdoğan, Yaşar
This study was conducted in 2018 in order to determine the effects of an electric fence system on honeybee colonies housed in hives made from different materials. The experiment was carried out with honeybee colonies of 36 Caucasian races (Apis mellifera Caucasica) in full-size Langstroth hive. In terms of mean values of the aggressive behaviour of honeybee colonies were found to be the highest (13.57 number/colony) application group where the conductor wires of electric fence system are within a 1 m distance from hives and the lowest (2.39 number/colony) were obtained from control application group. The highest mean values adult bee development (23.76 ± 12.34 number/colony), development of brood area (5421.25 ± 1432.75 cm 2 /colony), nectar flow period weight gain (46.42 ± 3.61 kg/colony), flight activity (107.38 ± 11.74 number/colony) and honey yield (21.55 ± 1.54 kg/colony) were determined in control groups. When the average values of honeybees robbing behaviour were examined, the highest value (3.33 ± 0.32 number/colony) was determined in the control groups. This experiment shows that the electromagnetic and electric fields produced by the electric fence system have negative effects on honeybees. In order to minimise the negative effects of the electric fence system on the bees, hives should be covered with a metal screen or should be placed long distance (minimum 2 m) from the electric fences.Highlights The electric fence system is the most effective method of keeping honeybee colonies. At the same time, the electric fence system disturbs the honeybees. All negativity can be completely eliminated by simple measures.

Simplified neutrosophic set (SNS) is an appropriate tool used to express the incompleteness, indeterminacy and uncertainty of the evaluation objects in decision-making process. In this study, we define the concept of possibility SNS including two types of information such as the neutrosophic performance provided from the evaluation objects and its possibility degree using a value ranging from zero to one. Then by extending the existing neutrosophic information, aggregation models for SNSs that cannot be used effectively to fusion the two different information described above, we propose two novel neutrosophic aggregation operators considering possibility, which are named as a possibility-induced simplified neutrosophic weighted arithmetic averaging operator and possibility-induced simplified neutrosophic weighted geometric averaging operator, and discuss their properties. Moreover, we develop a useful method based on the proposed aggregation operators for solving a multi-criteria group decision-making problem with the possibility simplified neutrosophic information, in which the weights of decision-makers and decision criteria are calculated based on entropy measure. Finally, a practical example is utilised to show the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this study, four novel boron-containing additives were synthesised chemically in the laboratory. The modification was performed by adding the additives, respectively, into asphalt at a certain amount by weight at the same temperature and mixing conditions. The modification mechanism and microstructure of the blends were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy. The variation in modified samples in comparison to base asphalt was investigated by performing the penetration, softening point, dynamic shear rheometer, amplitude–frequency–temperature sweeps and rotational viscosity tests. It was observed that the additives increased the softening point, rutting resistance, elastic properties and viscosity of asphalt. The additive synthesised with triazole borate ester octanol-sulphuric acid catalysts gave the most enhancements, relative to base asphalt.
