Güllü, Eda; Hasanoğlu Özkan, Elvan; Kızıl, Hamit Emre; Nartop, Dilek

Herein, novel heterocyclic thiosemicarbazone compounds (Hb1, Hb2, Hb3) containing pyrimidine, imidazole, pyridine, and phenyl rings were synthesized via the condensation method as potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. The structure of novel heterocyclic compounds was elucidated by using some spectroscopic techniques (organic elemental analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton/carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray image, and molar conductance measurement). The antiproliferative activity of novel heterocyclic thiosemicarbazone compounds using CVDK-8 cell viability assay. The viability assay was examined against A549 human non-small cell lung cancer cell line. All heterocyclic thiosemicarbazone compounds exhibited varying degrees of dose-dependent cytotoxic activity against A549 NSCLC cells. The results showed that the pyridine-based heterocyclic compound (Hb3) was the most potent antiproliferative agent, demonstrating a dose-dependent reduction in cell viability at concentrations of 50 µg/mL and higher.

A Meta-Analysis of Self-Management Strategies to Enhance Educators’ Teaching Performance

Aydin, Orhan; Ari-Arat, Ceren; Sulu, Mehmet D.

This meta-analysis examines the effectiveness of self-management strategies in enhancing the teaching performance of educators, with a focus on special education contexts. Thirty-six studies, including peer-reviewed articles and gray literature, were evaluated for methodological rigor using the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) Design Standards. Of these, 26 studies meeting the standards with or without reservations were further analyzed using descriptive review, meta-analysis, and moderator analysis. Findings revealed self-monitoring is the most frequently used self-management strategy. Among the educators included in the studies, the majority were special education teachers. Effect sizes were calculated using Tau-U for all 26 studies, between-case standardized mean difference (BC-SMD) for 25 studies, and performance-criteria-based effect size (PCES) for 13 studies reporting a mastery criterion. The overall Tau-U indicated a very large effect size of 0.88 (CI95 = [0.74, 1]), and BC-SMD resulted in a large effect size of 0.87 (CI95 = [0.77, 0.98]). The PCES showed an overall effective effect size of 1.15 (CI95 = [1.07, 1.23]). Moderator analysis revealed behavior-specific praise, and fewer years of teaching experience were associated with higher teaching performance effect sizes compared to other relevant categories; however, years of teaching experience and higher teaching performance were positively associated when using BC-SMD calculations. Detailed findings along with corresponding recommendations are discussed. © Hammill Institute on Disabilities 2026. Online software for a new risk assessment method in occupational health and safety: RSCAL

    Ateş, Fatih Mehmet; Doğan, Ömer

Risk assessment is necessary for the safety of employees in the workplace. Risk assessment methods contain some deficiencies arising from the persons performing the analysis. In order to partially overcome this situation, a risk assessment method has been developed by the authors by utilizing the data on occupational accidents in Turkey. In the method, Occupational Health and Safety Professionals who will perform the risk assessment can calculate the risk score without giving a numerical value for any hazard and corresponding risk that they identify in the workplace. In the study, a user-friendly online software called RSCAL by the authors, with a web address of https://rscal.com.tr/, which can meet all the above-mentioned requirements and calculate risk scores for workplaces serving in all types of sectors, has been developed. Through this online application, the identified hazard, risk and exposures of the business to be analyzed can be selected; the necessary corrective and preventive actions can be written by the user and then the risk score can be calculated. After that, all hazards specific to the enterprise can be meticulously identified and the risk assessment of the enterprise can be made by calculating the risk scores. This risk assessment can also be printed out in excel file format. In the future, parameters such as the deadline for each hazard, the legal requirement or standard from which the corrective preventive action to be taken arises can be added to the RSCAL calculation tool.

Analysis of an actively controlled composite box manipulator without external actuator

Lök, Şefika İ; Malgaca, Levent; Uyar, Mehmet

This study focuses on active vibration control for a single-link composite box manipulator by using a single actuator for driving and control actions. Model extraction and system identification techniques are studied to obtain mathematical models of the manipulator. The state space model is extracted from the finite element model using modal analysis conducted in ANSYS, while the system identification approach is an experimental modeling method using the input and output signals of the system. The input signals are defined as triangular and trapezoidal motion profiles, while the output signals are the acceleration signals of the manipulator. Proportional derivative and positive position feedback controllers are implemented on the obtained mathematical models to reduce residual vibrations. The simulation results are successfully verified by experiments, and uncontrolled/controlled results are evaluated with reduction rates.

Determination of flexural properties of hybrid composite using Cowper-Symonds rate-dependent material model

    Erbayrak, Engin

This study addressed to determine the flexural properties of hybrid composite laminates (HCAFRE) under the strain rate sensitivity. The hybrid composite laminate was formed as consecutive stacking of a sequence of plain woven carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CFRE) and a plain-woven aramid fiber reinforced epoxy (AFRE) laminates. The flexural tests were carried out at four different strain rates (0.01, 0.11, 0.55, 1.1 s−1) to determine the strain rate sensitivity of the HCAFRE. Moreover, the strain rate sensitivity of CFRE and AFRE was also determined individually. The effect of different fiber orientations (0°, 45°, and 90°) on the flexural properties of the composite laminates were also investigated at the scope of this study. In numerical analysis, composite laminates (CFRE, AFRE, and HCAFRE) were constituted in LS-DYNA finite element program using the Cowper-Symonds material model (MAT 112) which includes strain rate dependency. Consequently, it was seen that the experimental and numerical results were indicated a similar tendency to each other. Therefore, it was understood that the Cowper-Symonds material model is suited for the flexural behavior model of composite laminates under different strain rates.

Switching linear quadratic Gaussian control of a flexible blade structure containing magnetorheological fluid

    Sivrioglu, Selim; Bolat, Fevzi Cakmak

The present study suggests a new active control structure with a switching algorithm for control current of the electromagnetic actuator to suppress vibrations of a flexible blade element containing magnetorheological (MR) fluid. An identification model between MR fluid inside the blade and the electromagnetic actuator is utilized to derive the force equation. Since only one electromagnet is employed to suppress the blade vibration, a single-sided control actuation occurs in the proposed system. Therefore, the pulling force used for vibration control is generated by the actuator when the blade moves to downward direction. A switching linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controller that produces always a positive control input is designed to attenuate the blade vibrations. The LQG controller with switching is experimentally implemented under the impact and steady-state aerodynamic disturbances. The results of experiments show that the proposed switching controller is effective to attenuate vibrations of the flexible blade element.

Real-time implementation of self-tuning regulator control technique for coupled tank industrial process system

Ayten, Kagan Koray; Dumlu, Ahmet; Kaleli, Aliriza

This article presents the self-tuning regulator control technique for a coupled tank liquid level system that often used in industry. An autoregressive with exogenous model has been used as the liquid process model with the self-tuning control implementation in order to track the desired tank level trajectories with disturbances and uncertainties of the system dynamics. The designed self-tuning controller has been sensitive to parameter variations of the nonlinear coupled tank system. The parameters of the proposed controller are periodically updated themselves during the process by means of online recursive least square method with the forgetting factor algorithm. In this way, the parameter variations and unwanted disturbances of the system are eliminated in real-time application. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of the self-tuning regulator control technique, the real-time studies have been executed. The obtained experimental results demonstrated that the proposed controller gives the better trajectory tracking performance and smaller magnitude in overshot and undershot than the designed classical proportional–integral and sliding mode controllers.

A new method for titania thin film production: Thermionic vacuum arc method

Şenay, Volkan; Özen, Soner; Pat, Suat; Geçici, Birol; Korkmaz, Şadan

In this research, transparent titania (TiO2) thin films were deposited on a glass microscope slide and on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate under a high vacuum condition by means of the thermionic vacuum arc (TVA) method in a very short period of time (60 s). Optical properties and surface properties of the coated TiO2 surfaces are related to the structural changes of the coated layers due to ion energies and substrate effect. But obtained results are closely linked to literature values. Our analysis showed that the TVA method is an alternative method for low-temperature coatings and the produced films present important advantages for optical and industrial applications.

Experimental and numerical investigation of a novel energy-efficient vacuum glazing technology for low-carbon buildings

    Cuce, Erdem

In this study, a recently developed innovative window technology called vacuum tube window is introduced, and its performance assessment is presented through an experimental and numerical research. The novel design of vacuum tube window consists of evacuated tubes surrounded by Argon as inert gas to eliminate conductive and convective effects inside the window and thus to produce a building element with remarkably low overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value). Heat transfer inside the window was modelled via a reliable commercial computational fluid dynamics software ANSYS FLUENT. The accuracy of simulations was verified by environmental chamber tests. For the vacuum tube diameter of 28 mm, an excellent agreement between experimental and numerical data was achieved. For different values of design parameters such as pane thickness, tube thickness, tube diameter and Argon gap, total heat loss and U-value of the vacuum tube window and optimum data were evaluated. Optimum tube diameter was found to be 60 mm in terms of thermal performance characteristics, cost, lightness and aesthetic issues. It is concluded that the vacuum tube window is able to provide a U-value lower than 0.40 W/m2K, which is very promising for both retrofitting of existing buildings and new-build applications.
