Students’ Well-Being and Academic Achievement: A Meta-Analysis Study

    Kaya, Metin; Erdem, Cahit

A considerable amount of literature has been published on students’ well-being, but empirical research has yielded ambiguous results regarding the relationship between well-being and academic achievement. Meta-analysis studies on this issue are scarce, and the available studies focus on a single domain of well-being. Meta-analyses investigating students’ general well-being and academic achievement are needed. To this end, we carried out a meta-analysis study on the association between students’ general well-being and academic achievement based on data from correlational studies involving 54,426 participants in 81 independent samples. We report a significant and positive but small effect size based on this dataset. The effect sizes differ significantly in terms of the moderator variables of publication year, age, school level, and publication type, while the correlation is robust across well-being domains, academic areas, scale types, and development levels of countries. Results are discussed and implications are suggested in line with the literature.

Foreign Language Apprehension and Interview Success

    Dolgunsöz, Emrah

A job interview (or employment interview) is a common hiring method involving a conversation between a job applicant (interviewee) and a representative of an employer (interviewer) which is conducted to assess and evaluate the suitability of the applicant for the job (Dipboye, Macan and Shahani-Denning 2012). Depending on the company profile, the type of position and the job requirements, applicants are assessed and evaluated by companies in various dimensions ranging from presentability to academic efficiency. Although the criteria of companies vary a lot, all interviews engender a phenomenon called interview anxiety. It is generally the sum of annoying and unpleasant feelings before or during a job interview (McCarthy and Goffin 2004) due to reasons such as lack of control during interviews (Jones and Pinkney 1989) or being evaluated by a stranger in an interactional environment (Ayres et al. 1998). Common symptoms of interview anxiety manifest in long and frequent pauses while talking, slow speech or licking lips (Feiler and Powell 2016). Besides the regular procedures of employment interviews, global companies operating in non-English-speaking countries also assess the English language competency of the applicants during interviews. These companies value proficiency in English and it is a vital prerequisite of international communication for these types of companies. Foreign language (mostly English) assessment commonly focuses on the oral skills of the applicants and how good they are at communicating in the English language. The inclusion of this evaluation in job interviews certainly has merit; however, it also has the potential to increase the anxiety experienced during interviews due to the phenomenon called foreign language anxiety (FLA). Anxiety, in general, is defined as a common subjective feeling of unease, discomfort, and worry often accompanied by some physiological symptoms. FLA refers to the specific type of anxiety that emerges in a foreign language context (MacIntyre 1999). FLA causes low foreign language performance causing anxious individuals to commit various linguistic and phonological errors. Considering that employment interviews are already anxiety-provoking processes, this study hypothesizes that the inclusion of foreign language assessment during interviews elevates anxiety due to FLA, and aims to examine how this experience affects employment interview success.

Screening for antioxidant capacity, pollen types and phytochemical profile by GC/MS and UHPLC from propolis

Bayram, Nesrin Ecem; Gerçek, Yusuf Can; Öz, Gül Cevahir

Propolis is a resinous mixture collected by honeybees from different parts of plants such as poplars, birches, alders, conifers, pines, palms and willows. This study aims to determine pollen types (by light microscope), chemical compound profile (by GC-MS), fatty acid composition (by GC-MS), total phenolic content (by the Folin-Ciocalteu method), total flavonoid content (by the aluminium chloride method) and antioxidant capacity (by the CUPRAC, ABTS and CERAC methods) of a propolis sample from the western part of Istanbul, Turkey. As a result of microscopic analysis of the sample, pollen types of taxa belonging to 27 plant families were diagnosed. The GC-MS analysis of propolis revealed the presence of 38 phytochemical constituents that may contribute to its quality. Of these compounds, rates of "4H-1-benzopyran-4-one, 2,3-dihydro-5,7-dihydroxy- 2-phenyl-,(S)"were highest. In addition, the concentrations of naringenin, pinocembrin and galangin were determined to be 2.45, 9.92 and 7.06 mg/ml by UHPLC analysis. The extract had significant antioxidant activity in all assays, with values of 282.8±9 mg TE /g in the CUPRAC, 425.7±18 mg TE/g in the CERAC and 186.4±8 mg TE/g in the ABTS assays. Antioxidant capacity of the propolis extract was positively associated with the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extract. Moreover, the major fatty acids were C20:1n9 (cis- 11-eicosenoic acid), C22:1 (erucic acid) and C24:1 (nervonic acid). The results show that the propolis used in our study has important potential as an alternative food supplement and for cosmetic and therapeutic medicine and it can be used as an active agent in these areas.

Synthesis of enantiopure (S)-6-chlorochroman-4-ol using whole-cell Lactobacillus paracasei biotransformation

    Şahin, Engin

Chromane, which has a fused cyclic structure, is a significant molecule that can be found in the structure of many important compounds. Lactobacillus paracasei BD101 was demonstrated as whole-cell biocatalyst for the synthesis of (S)-6-chlorochroman-4-ol with immense enantioselectivity. The conditions of asymmetric reduction were optimized one factor by one factor using L paracasei BD101 to achieve enantiomerically pure product and complete conversion. Using these obtained optimization conditions, asymmetric reduction of 6-chlorochroman-4-one was performed under environmentally friendly conditions; 6-chlorochroman-4-one, having a fused cyclic structure as previously noted to be difficult to asymmetric reduction with biocatalysts, was enantiomerically reduced to (S)-6-chlorochroman-4-ol with an enantiomeric excess >99% on a high gram scale. This study is the first example in the literature for the enantiopure synthesis of (S)-6-chlorochroman-4-ol using a biocatalyst. Also notably, the optical purity of (S)-6-chlorochroman-4-ol obtained in this study through asymmetric bioreduction using whole-cell biocatalyst is the highest value in the literature. In this study, (S)-6-chlorochroman-4-ol was produced on a gram scale by an easy, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly method, which has shown the production of valuable chiral precursors for drug synthesis and other industrial applications. This study provides a convenient method for the production of (S)-6-chlorochroman-4-ol, which can meet the industrial green production demand of this chiral secondary alcohol.

Assessment of waste-to-energy potential of ELT management: An actual case study for Erzincan

Güngör, Osman; Tozlu, Alperen; Arslantürk, Cihat

End-of-life tires (ELTs) and their decomposition are becoming a major environmental issue in the local region as a result of economic and technological challenges. Despite this, ELT management is gaining popularity as an advanced function for treating tires to obtain char, oil, and gas products using pyrolysis. The main goal of this article is to integrate data from an actual recycling plant with the activities of pyrolysis products and their physical properties in the literature. This article presents energy potentials and basic applications of pyrolysis products as well as advances in the current situation in ELT management in the world. Accordingly, an existing ELT management in Erzincan, Turkey is explained in detail by considering the available energy recovery and material treatment activities. In this plant, which has an installed power capacity of 12 MW, approximately 25 tons of pyrolytic oil, 10.7 tons of pyrolytic gas, 24 tons of carbon black and, 10.4 tons of steel are produced daily. The calorific values of carbon black and pyrolytic oil for the products leaving the pyrolysis plant are close to the values in the literature, which is promising. In the plant, the overall thermal efficiency of the system and the engine is found to be 26.34% and 51.24%, respectively. On the other hand, to supply additional power to the plant utilizing exhaust gas discharged to the atmosphere, some thermodynamic models can be developed; additionally, more rational values can be obtained through thermoeconomic and optimization.

Investigation of ammonia stripping with a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor

Taşdemir, Atila; Cengiz, İbrahim; Yildiz, Ergün; Bayhan, Yalçın Kemal

Ammonia is a commonly used compound in the domestic and industrial fields. If ammonia found in wastewater after use is not treated, even at low concentrations it may cause toxic effects in the receiving environment. In this study, a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor (HDC) was designed with the aim of removing ammonia. The effect of parameters like different cavitation numbers, airflow, temperature and initial concentration on NH3 removal was researched. The potential of hydrodynamic cavitation for removal of volatile gases, like NH3, was assessed with the aid of two film theory mathematical equations. Experimental studies were performed at fixed pH = 11. Under the conditions of 0.12 cavitation number, 25 L/min airflow, 30 °C temperature and 2500 mg/L initial concentration, in 24 h 98.4% NH3 removal efficiency was achieved. With the same experimental conditions without any air, the HDC reactor provided 89.5% NH3 removal at the end of 24 h. The HDC reactor is very effective for the removal of volatile gases from wastewater and it was concluded that even in the absence of aeration, the desired NH3 removal efficiency was provided.

Reflections on sustainable consumption in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic

    Yildiz, Tuğba; Başar, Enes Emre

The COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused severe diseases and deaths around the world, impacts not only health, but also daily lives, economies, and social systems. It is observed that consumers' purchasing patterns and preferences have changed significantly along with the new normal brought by the pandemic. For example, tons of plastic waste each day caused by disposable masks used to prevent the spread of viruses and the dramatic increase in disposable plastic tableware waste caused by the increasing number of food deliveries and takeaway meals as a result of measures such as social distancing and quarantine lead to significant environmental concerns. Furthermore, the additional packaging waste generated by e-commerce trades, which increases incrementally every day, is also an important source of environmental concerns. Although a growing number of consumers are interested in preserving the environment and participating more actively in sustainable consumption around the world, the changes caused by COVID-19 in their lives deeply affect sustainable consumption behaviors. Therefore, the discussion of how sustainable consumption behaviors of consumers are affected during the pandemic may contribute to the development of new strategies in this field. From this point of view, the effects of environmental concerns and sensitivity on sustainable consumption were first discussed from different aspects in this section. Then, the reflection of the pandemic on consumer behaviors was analyzed within a general framework. Finally, how the pandemic influenced the tendency toward sustainability was revealed.

Dynamic analyses of experimentally-updated FE model of historical masonry clock towers using site-specific seismic characteristics and scaling parameters according to the 2018 Turkey building earthquake code

Genç, Ali Fuat; Ergün, Mustafa; Günaydin, M.; Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Ateş, Şevket; Okur, Fatih Yesevi; Mosallam, Ayman S.

This paper presents a dynamic analysis considering site-specific seismic characteristics for a masonry clock tower located at the city of Çorum, Turkey according to the new Turkish earthquake code. Finite element model of the tower was modeled using ANSYS software in order to determine numerical dynamic characteristics of the structure such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. Non-destructive experimental measurements were performed to extract the experimental dynamic characteristics. Experimental results were used as a reference parameter for finite element model updating to reflect the current structural behavior of clock tower. Model updating procedure was carried out by changing of initial material properties of structural stone elements, and maximum differences were reduced from 23.44% to 4.90%. Numerical results indicated that displacements have an increasing trend with the height of the clock tower. Furthermore, the maximum displacements occurred at the top point between the values of 18.88 mm to 42.5 mm. Numerical results also showed that both the maximum and minimum principal stresses occurred at the upper body (clock zone) walls and transition segment between the values of 1.08 MPa/2.86 MPa and − 0.87 MPa/−3.00 MPa, respectively. The maximum and minimum principal strains occurred at the upper body (clock zone) walls between the values of 0.65E-3/1.56E-3 and − 0.78E-3/−1.50E-3, respectively. It is also concluded that non-destructive experimental measurement is very useful method to evaluate in-situ structural identification, validate and update the initial finite element model for further analyses.

Synthesis and characterization of cellobiose-derived oligosaccharides with Bifidogenic activity by glucansucrase E81

İspirli, Hümeyra; Bowman, Michael J.; Skory, Christopher D.; Dertli, Enes

Cellobiose-derived oligosaccharides were produced from acceptor reactions with glucansucrase E81 and their prebiotic potentials were determined in this study. The major product was a mixture of trisaccharides formed by the addition of an α-linked glucose to cellobiose at either the 2-O position of the reducing end (86%) glucose or the 6-O position of the non-reducing end glucose (11%) demonstrated by NMR spectroscopy and LC-MS-LTQ analysis. The purified DP 3 cellobiose-derived oligosaccharides were then tested for in vitro human gastric juice and α-amylase digestion and no digestion was observed during the 6 h digestion period. Importantly, DP 3 cellobiose-derived oligosaccharides promoted the growth of Bifidobacteria at high levels demonstrating a Bifidogenic effect and a mild level of proliferation was observed for Lactobacilli suggesting the prebiotic roles of cellobiose-derived oligosaccharides.

    Poverty and City Safety

    Alacadağli, Esmeray

Children are people’s gateway to the future; they are 30.3% of the world’s population. Childhood is a stage that has a great impact on adulthood and children being healthy individuals. For this reason, child poverty and childhood conditions are very important for individual and community life. Cities are places where people live, and more than 50% of the world’s population lives there. In the cities, whose numbers and sizes have increased over time, the crimes committed have also increased and diversified. For this reason, it has become increasingly difficult to provide urban security today. The aim of this study is to show the relationship between child poverty and urban safety, by carrying out an overview of the global perspective and examining the case of Turkey. Bee bread and bee pollen of different plant sources: determination of phenolic content, antioxidant activity, fatty acid and element profiles

Mayda, Nazlı; Özkök, Aslı; Ecem Bayram, Nesrin; Gerçek, Yusuf Can; Sorkun, Kadriye

This study aims to determine the plant sources, fatty acid composition, total phenolic-flavonoid content, antioxidant capacity, and elemental profile of bee pollen (BP) and bee bread (BB) samples from the same bee hive in different locations. 31 families and 71 species were determined by pollen analysis of BP and BB samples. Pollen frequencies in BB samples were generally similar or less than in BP. Total phenolic varied from 8.26 ± 0.299 to 43.42 ± 0.779 mg GAE/g, and total flavonoid ranged from 1.81 ± 0.040 to 4.44 ± 0.125 mg QE/g. ABTS and DDPH assays indicated that the samples have good antioxidant activity. Samples showed a protein content ranging from 17.6 to 22.2% while the total fatty acid was between 60.27 and 86.49%. The elemental analysis showed that all samples were rich in essential minerals. As a result, total protein, total fatty acids, moisture content and antioxidant capacity of BB samples were found to be lower than those of BP samples from the same hive. In spite of these data, it is necessary to work with more detailed and more samples to be able to say which bee product (bee pollen or bee bread) has superior properties as functional food.

Credit ratings, credit rating agencies, and sovereign credit ratings

    Yildiz, Ümit; Günsoy, Bülent

Especially in the last century, globalization and deregulation have shown intensively in every field with technological advances. These developments have affected the financial markets as well as in all other areas of the economic system, and restrictions and obstacles between countries have started to lose their effect rapidly. At this point, however, a crucial need arose for market participants: accurate information. For market participants who want to know about the risk they take when making an investment decision, accessing the accurate information is costly; and this negatively affects market discipline. At this point, credit rating is the most important tool to ensure market discipline. Credit rating is briefly defined as an independent assessment on whether an obligator can fulfill its financial obligations on time. This assestment is carried out by credit rating agencies within the framework of a certain method. Although there are many local and national rating agencies around the world, there are big three credit rating agencies (CRAs) which hold almost the entire market: Standard and Poor's (S and P), Fitch, and Moody's.Credit rating can be classified into many different subcategories. The rating can be classified as long- or short-term ratings according to their maturities, and local currency and foreign currency ratings according to their types. After risk assessment in the light of some economic and political factors for a country, the alpha numerical indicators determined in terms of long-term foreign currency are called Sovereign Credit Rating. Sovereign Credit Ratings are determined and announced by the CRAs. CRAs determine sovereign credit ratings on a scale that consists of many levels ranging from 'prime' level to 'default' level. This scale also shows the rating grades of the agencies. The scale used by CRAs is classified into three different levels: investment grade, non-investment grade, and default grade.

Thermoeconomic analysis of a hybrid cogeneration plant with use of near-surface geothermal sources in Turkey

Tozlu, Alperen; Gençaslan, Betül; Özcan, Hasan

In this study, thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses of systems that produce electricity and heat through the use and storage of solar energy and near-surface geothermal sources are carried out. Three different configurations, which are the organic Rankine cycle (ORC), cogeneration system (CGN) and hybrid system (HYB), are coupled to the parabolic trough collector (PTC) system. The systems are named PTC-ORC, PTC-CGN and PTC-HYB are conducted. The reference system called PTC-ORC only produces electrical energy with parabolic trough collectors and it does not have a thermal energy storage system, whereas in PTC-CGN, in addition to the cogeneration of electricity and heat, thermal energy storage is also available. Finally, thermodynamic and economic analyses are conducted in the PTC-HYB with the assistance of near-surface geothermal energy, which is widely available in Turkey. In this study, the actual data of Ankara Kızılcahamam near-surface geothermal fields are taken as the heat source for the hybrid system. These facilities, each producing 1 MW of electricity, are first optimized with the help of parametric studies, and exergoeconomic analysis is performed with respect to optimum thermal conditions. The electricity production costs of PTC-ORC, PTC-CGN and PTC-HYB are found to be 0.257 $/kWh, 0.448 $/kWh and 0.401 $/kWh, respectively. The study demonstrates that thermal energy storage brings extra costs, while near-surface geothermal sources may help decrease energy costs from renewables.

A novel perspective for Lactobacillus reuteri: Nanoencapsulation to obtain functional fish fillets

Ceylan, Z.; Uslu, Emin; İspirli, Hümeyra; Meral, Raciye; Gavgalı, Mehmet; 'Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin; Dertli, Enes

Enrichment of food products with beneficial Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) is an important methodology used to develop functional food products. Lactobacillus reuteri E81 was successfully nanoencapsulated into poly (vinyl alcohol)-based nanofibers for its application to the surface of fish fillets. The Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis confirmed the nanoencapsulation of L. reuteri E81 in electrospun nanofibers (LRNF) that had an average diameter of 381.83 ± 130.69 nm. LAB growth in rainbow trout fillets and fatty fish (mackerel) and were found to be 2.92 and in the range of 3.27 and 2.66 log CFU/g, respectively. Importantly, the antioxidative characteristics of fish fillets significantly increased following their coating with LRNF. The results revealed a significant increase in the inhibition of free radicals in the samples treated with nanoencapsulated L. reuteri as compared to control group fish fillet samples. DPPH activity significantly increased to 40.24%, 44.96%, 44.97 in mackerel samples treated with nanoencapsulated L. reuteri (MLR) and increased to 19.76%, 20.87%, 21.46% in rainbow samples treated with nanoencapsulated L. reuteri (RLR). MLR samples exhibited the highest ABTS radical-scavenging activity (1631 μmol TEAC/g). FRAP value of MLR samples was found to be 1.70 times higher than the control group samples.

Comparing of the Magnetic Force Parameters of Superconducting Maglev System Using Horizontal and Vertical PMG Geometry in Multi-Surface HTS-PMG Arrangement

Ozturk, Kemal; Savaskan, Burcu; Abdioglu, Murat; Cansiz, Ahmet; Dilek, Durukan Burak; Karaahmet, Zekeriya

In this study, a detailed static and dynamic experimental studies were carried out in different cooling heights (CH) by using two different multi-surface HTS-PMG arrangements with horizontal (MS-H) and vertical (MS-V) geometries to determine the optimum magnetic force, static stiffness, dynamic response, and dynamic stiffness parameters of superconducting Maglev system. The maximum levitation force values (in CH = 25 mm) were obtained as 202 N and 84 N, respectively, with horizontal and vertical geometry HTS-PMG arrangements, while the maximum guidance force values (in CH = 5 mm) were obtained as −58 N and −22 N, respectively. Also, the vertical static (in CH = 25 mm) and dynamic stiffness (in CH = 5 mm) values were determined as 33.8 N/mm and 37.8 N/mm, respectively, for MS-H and 12.3 N/mm and 25.1 N/mm, respectively, for MS-V arrangements. The bigger levitation force, guidance force, and both static and dynamic magnetic stiffness values of MS-H arrangement with horizontal geometry than that of MS-V arrangement with vertical geometry indicate that the horizontal HTS-PMG geometry is more suitable for practical Maglev applications in terms of loading capacity and movement stability.

New formalism for characterization of simple non-reciprocal networks free from singularity-point problem

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus; Ozturk, Gokhan; Ozturk, Hamdullah; Izginli, Mucahit; Ertugrul, Mehmet

A method has been proposed for accurate characterization of non-reciprocal networks without enforcing the passivity principle. Thanks to the introduced different even and odd coefficients, our method has no singularity-point problem as compared with the conventional method. The proposed method is validated by scattering parameter measurements of a ferrite-loaded waveguide shifter. In addition, it is demonstrated by measurements that our method, as compared with the conventional one, is more resistant to random noise due to post-calibration effects.

Grey Zone: A Gap between Heavy and Severe Exercise Domain

Ozkaya, Ozgur; Balci, Gorkem Aybars; As, Hakan; Cabuk, Refik; Norouzi, Mahdi

The aim of this study was to determine a critical threshold (CT) interpreted as “the highest exercise intensity where V̇O2 can be stabilized before reaching 95% of V̇O2max (V̇O2peak)” and compare it with commonly used anaerobic threshold indices. Ten well-trained male cyclists volunteered for this study. Ventilatory threshold (VT) was determined from incremental tests. Multisession constant-load trials were performed to reveal V̇O2max. Mathematically modeled critical power (CP) was estimated through the best individual fit parameter method. Maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) was detected by 30-minute constant-load exercises. The individual CT load of each cyclist was tested by constant-load exercises to exhaustion with +15 W intervals until minimal power output to elicit V̇O2peak. The results showed that work rate corresponding to CT (329.5 6 41.5 W) was significantly greater than that of the MLSS (269.5 ± 38.5 W; p = 0.000), VT (279.6 ± 33 W; p = 0.000), and CP (306.3 ± 39.4 W; p = 0.000), and CP overestimated both VT and MLSS (p = 0.000). There was no significant V̇O2 difference between the 10th and 30th minute of MLSS and MLSS + 15 W exercise (0.36–0.13 ml·min-1·kg-1; p = 0.621). Exercising V̇O2 response of MLSS + 15 W could not exceed the level of 95% V̇O2max (57.02 ± 3.87 ml·min-1·kg-1 and 87.2 ± 3.1% of V̇O2max; p = 0.000), whereas V̇O2 responses greater than 95% of V̇O2max were always attained during exercises performed at CT + 15 W (64.52 ± 4.37 ml·min-1·kg-1 and 98.6 6 1% of V̇O2max; p > 0.05). In conclusion, this study indicates that there is a “grey zone” between heavy and severe exercise domain. This information may play a key role in enhancing athletic performance by improving the quality of training programs.

A study on 3D graphene synthesized directly on Glass/FTO substrates: Its Raman mapping and optical properties

    Bayram, Ozkan

In this study, vertically oriented (3D) graphene nanostructures (VGN) were obtained on Glass and Fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates at relatively low temperatures (approaximatelly at 400 °C) by using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. VGNs were characterized using Raman, Uv–Vis and SEM spectroscopies, respectively. Raman spectroscopy showed that growth temperature significantly affected VGN formation and film quality. The layer structures of these VGNs were also confirmed by Raman mapping. The most important data obtained from this study is that although the applied radio frequency (RF) power is the same, the growth temperature significantly affects the graphene formation and morphologies. This was attributed to the fact that CH4 decomposition was very difficult at low temperatures. The optical transmittance of VGNs ranged from 50% to 95% (at 550 nm wavelength) and their electrical conductivity was also determined to be between 5.94 kohm/sqr and 11.2 kohm/sqr. The electrical and optical properties of VGNs, which have a large surface area, indicated that they may be an alternative material for sensor, solar cell and supercapacitor applications.

Boosting Dependency Parsing Performance by Incorporating Additional Features for Agglutinative Languages

    Altıntaş, Mücahit; Tantuğ, A. Cüneyd

In recent studies, the use of language models has increased noticeably and has made quite good contributions. However, using the proper representation and taking into account the complementary components are still among the issues to be considered. In this research, the impact of sub-word level sentence piece based word representation on the performance of dependency parsing has been demonstrated for agglutinative languages. Furthermore, we propose to use the sentence representation that holds all meaning of the sentence as an additional feature to improve dependency parsing. Our proposed enhancements are experimented on nine agglutinative languages; Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Indonesian, Japanese, Kazakh, Korean, Turkish, and Uyghur. We found that the sentence piece based token encoding has contributed parsing performance for the majority of the experimented languages. Using the entire meaning of the sentence as a complementary feature has enhanced parsing performance for six languages out of nine.

‘Tele-education’ in the COVID-19 pandemic process in Turkey: A mental diaspora research specific to Turkish Language Teaching students

    Ustabulut, Mete Yusuf; Keskin, Savaş

This study tries to map educational processes that have to be transformed into the extraordinary history of the COVID-19 pandemic and adapt to the ‘new normal’ with a relational and metaphoric approach. In the study, the existing physical and mental conditions of the students who are "scattered/dispersed" geographically due to the mandatory "return home" in the pandemic process are conceptualized with the metaphor of the "diaspora". The study aims to draw attention to student-centered social problems by questioning the functionality of tele-education processes, which are designed to compensate for interrupted educational relationships and make them sustainable again. It is aimed to measure the effects of online consciousness that were deterritorialized by human-computer interaction and computer-mediated communication on student performances and to understand student motivations during the tele-education process. Therefore, a survey was conducted at ten universities in Turkey and reached 150 students through the snowball sampling technique. The results of the study show that the student self-perception of the tele-education process coincides with the diasporic identity and this unusual technology integration that cannot be fully compensated triggers mental diaspora feelings.
