İlter, İlhan
The purpose of the present study was to determine the teacher candidates’ perceptions related to ‘multigrade classes’ concept through metaphors. The study was conducted with the students who studied at their fourth (final) year in the Primary School Teaching Program, Faculty of Education at University of Bayburt in 2013-2014 academic year. The participants of the study were composed of 78 teacher candidates in total, 36 of them were girls and 42 of them were boys. The data collected in the research were obtained through an interview form in which there was an incomplete sentence like “The multigrade classes resemble…because…” In the process of collecting data, the teacher candidates were asked to write metaphors related to multigrade classes with the first justifications coming to their minds. In this study, phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used and the research data were analyzed by means of the content analysis technique. According to the findings, the teacher candidates developed 60 different and valid metaphors in total about multigrade classes. The metaphors were classified under six different conceptual categories. These categories were classified in the form of multigrade classes as diversity in social-cognitive level and abilities, the process of challenging struggle, complementary-supportive service environment, source of life, family atmosphere and hierarchical order. It was found that the most preferred metaphors developed by the teacher candidates were extended family, family, flower garden, lush forest and Ashura.

- MakaleYalnız künye2015Numerical modeling of cold powder compaction using multi particle and continuum media approaches
Güner, Faruk; Cora, Ömer Necati; Sofuoğlu, Hasan
Numerical analysis of powder compaction process requires multi-particle modeling approach as continuum models fail to simulate the nature of process (e.g. interparticle, and particle-die interactions), accurately. This study aimed for analyzing powder compaction process utilizing 3-D finite element modeling approach along with different material models including modified Cam-Clay, Mohr-Coulomb, Shima-Oyane and von-Mises. The finite element analyses were carried out by implementing multi-particle finite element method. Moreover, continuum modeling was also performed for comparison purposes. In both cases, the compaction of spherical copper particles was analyzed at room temperature conditions. The obtained FEA results were compared in terms of equivalent stress and strain, and deformed shape. Results showed that the FE models in which von-Mises and modified Cam-clay material models were used yielded results of similar magnitude while those of Shima-Oyane and Mohr-Coulomb material models resulted in equivalent stress and strain values are in close proximity. Effect of coefficient of friction on the results was also investigated by implementing three distinct coefficients of friction ( μ= 0.1, 0.25, 0.4). It was noted that increasing friction resulted in elevated level of deformation for the particles and harsher particle-particle, and particle-die contact interactions.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the effects of fly ash, different water/(cement + mineral additive) ratios and pumice aggregates to some physical and mechanical properties of self-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete. In this study, pumice had been used as lightweight aggregates. Several properties of self-compacting pumice aggregate lightweight concretes like the unit weight, flow diameter, T50 time, flow diameter after an hour, V-funnel time, and L-box tests, 7, 28, 90 and 180-day compressive strength, 28-day splitting tensile strength, dry unit weight, water absorption, thermal conductivity and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests were investigated. For this purpose, 18 series of concrete samples were prepared in two groups. Pumice aggregate was used as a replacement of natural aggregate, at the levels of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% by volume. Furthermore, a second series of 100% pumice aggregate was used for the production of self-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete with constant w/(c + m) ratios as 0.35, 0.40, and 0.45 by weight. The flow diameters, T50 times, paste volumes, 28-day compressive strengths, dry unit weights and thermal conductivities of self-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete were obtained in the range of 600–800 mm, 2–8 s, 471–572 lt/m 3, 9.2–53.26 MPa, 839–2156 kg/m 3 and 0.321–1.508 W/mk, respectively, which satisfies not only the strength requirement of semi-structural lightweight concrete but also the flowing ability requirements and thermal conductivity requirements of self-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete.

Demirtas, M.; Purcek, G.; Yanar, H.; Zhang, Z.J.; Zhang, Z.F.
The Zn-22Al alloy was subjected to equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to improve its high strain rate (HSR) superplasticity at room temperature (RT). A well-designed two-step ECAP process formed an ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure with an average grain size of 200nm as the lowest one obtained so far after ECAP processing of this alloy. Also, agglomerate- and texture-free microstructure with UFG Al-rich α- and Zn-rich η-grains separated mostly by high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) was produced by this process. The maximum RT elongation was achieved to be 400% with a strain rate sensitivity of 0.30 at a very high strain rate of 5×10-2s-1 after the two-step ECAP process. This elongation value is the highest one obtained at RT and at all strain rates for this alloy up to now. The current results demonstrate that such an improvement in superplasticity of Zn-22Al alloy after the two-step ECAP process can enhance its applications where RT and HSR superplasticity are strongly needed.

- MakaleYalnız künye2015The effect of magnetic field distribution and pole array on the vertical levitation force properties of HTS Maglev systems
Ozturk, Kemal; Abdioglu, Murat; Sahin, Ercin; Celik, Sukru; Gedikli, Hasan; Savaskan, Burcu
In this paper, the levitation force measurements have been carried out by the magnetic force measurement system under both field-cooling and zero-field-cooling regimes, whereas the magnetic field distribution over the permanent-magnet guideway (PMG) was calculated by numerical analysis based on the finite-element method. It was shown in this study that the vertical levitation capability and stability of Maglev systems can be improved depending on the cooling regime, pole number, and suitable arrangement of the PMG. In this paper, it was shown that when the pole number increases, the levitation force density increases. It also appeared that the reasonable position of the supplementary permanent magnet and appropriate cooling heights are key parameters for both levitation performance and stabilization of the high-temperature superconductor (HTS) Maglev. It is believed that the numerical and experimental data in this paper are useful for relative design and practical application of HTS Maglev systems.

Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan
In this research, an AlGaAs film was deposited on a microscope slide by means of the thermionic vacuum arc (TVA) technique which is a novel plasma production technique. AlGaAs structures were grown by this deposition technique for the first time and this process occurred in a very short period of time. In order to characterize the produced film, nano-structural, nano-mechanical, optical, and surface properties were determined by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and interferometer. According to the results of the measurements, the mean thickness value of the produced film was obtained as 1.8 μm. The band gap value was determined as 2eV from the Kubelka-Munk plot. The refractive index value was obtained as approximately 3.4. Hardness value was determined as 2 GPa from the Oliver-Pharr method. All these values are consistent with the reported values in the literature for the AlGaAs films produced by different methods. TVA technique appeared as a suitable and promising technique for the production of AlGaAs films.

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Barroso, Joaquim José; Buldu, Gul; Bute, Musa; Kaya, Yunus; Karacali, Tevhit; Ertugrul, Mehmet
It is well recognized that near-field effects become dominant when the metamaterial (MM) is in resonance. In addition, any inaccurate information of the location of reference planes, and the effective length can seriously affect the accuracy of retrieved electromagnetic properties of MMs. By considering all these issues, in this research paper, we propose a retrieval method for reference-plane invariant and thickness-independent determination of electromagnetic parameters of MM slabs involving boundary effects. Our method first accomplishes determination of effective length of MMs and calibration-plane factors using scattering parameter measurements, aside the resonance region, of two identical MMs with different lengths. Our method then incorporates near-field effects in accurate retrieval of electromagnetic properties of MMs. The method is verified by scattering parameters simulated for a homogeneous conventional material and a weakly or negligibly coupled inhomogeneous MM slab made by two metallic concentric split-ring-resonators. Consequences of an inaccurate information of reference-plane transformation factors and the value of effective lengths and of noninclusion of near field effects on the retrieved electromagnetic properties are thoroughly discussed by way of few examples to substantiate the accuracy of the proposed method.

- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2015Determination of the critical fraction of solid during the solidification of a PM-cast aluminium alloy
Kayikci, Ramazan; Colak, Murat; Sirin, Selcuk; Kocaman, Engin; Akar, Neset
During the solidification of aluminium alloys, a flow of the interdendritic liquid through the mushy zone plays an important role in the feedability and shrinkage-driven porosity formation. Therefore, for almost all the studies about casting modelling, a good knowledge of the mushy-zone behaviour is necessary. In this study, the limit of the mushy-zone permeability for permanent-mould (PM)-cast aluminium alloys was investigated. A novel experimental technique was developed to quantify the value of the critical fraction of solid (CFS) at which the interdendritic feeding stops. Grain-refined and non-grain-refined aluminium alloys were used to evaluate the effect of the grain size on the CFS limit of both the non-grain-refined and fully grain-refined alloys. Three different initial mould temperatures were used to find if the mould temperature has any effect on the feeding of a casting. Alloys of varying solidification intervals were also used to determine the critical fraction of solid (CFS) for the feeding limit of solidifying castings. The results showed that the CFS values for solidifying aluminium alloys may vary from 34 % to 57 % depending on the casting conditions. The results also showed that for A356 aluminium-alloy castings the CFS value is not an alloy property, yet it significantly depends on the parameters such as the grain refinement and the modification of eutectic silicon.

Yilmaz, Gül Kaleli
The purpose of this research is to analyze the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) studies in Turkey by using meta-synthesis method and to present the type of tendency in this field. In the research, a total of 59 studies made up of 37 papers, 15 dissertations, and 7 assertions which were published between the years of 2008-2014 and chosen through purposeful sampling method were analyzed. Google Academics search engine, TÜB̄TAK ULAKB̄M DergiPark, YÖK National Dissertation Center, EBSCOhost-ERIC ve SPRINGER databases took advantages of selecting the studies. Each study were examined within the context of the study's purpose, subject area, method, sample, data collection tools, teaching applications and results by being subjected to content analysis. Obtained data were interpreted depending on the frequency and partly illustrated through tables and graphs. In the research, the results showed that a significant portion of the studies were conducted with the aims of scale validation/adaptation, examination of TPACK competences and developments; that a few number of studies focused on a special subject area; that survey study and data collection tolls such as scale/survey were used mostly; that studies conducted with prospective teachers were majority; that although it had been revealed that the participants usually have high levels of TPACK competence/perception in quantitative studies, the situation was contrary in qualitative weighted studies; that different teaching applications such as TPACK workshops, mixed vocational development program, blended learning increases TPACK. In light of the obtained results, it was seen that studies targeting TPACK development in which implementations are carried in a long process through using a quite number of data collection tools are needed in Turkey. Besides, it was recognized that the courses in education faculties should be re-updated according to TPACK and teachers or prospective teachers should be trained with the help of courses or in/pre-service training programs. Lastly, recommendations were made for researchers, program makers and appliers who will do studies in this field.

For ages, lichens have long been investigated popularly for biological roles, mainly antitumor, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Many positive results were obtained in these previous research. Thus, in this study, we aimed to determine whether extracts of Usnea articulata (UAE) and Usnea filipendula (UFE) possessing a protection against aflatoxin B1(AFB1)-induced genotoxic and oxidative damage. The results of our studies showed that 5 μM concentrations of AFB1increased the frequencies of sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and decreased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). However, when 5, 10 and 20 µg/mL concentrations of UAE and UFE was added to AFB1, the frequencies of SCE and MDA level were decreased and SOD, GSH and GPx level were increased. The Ames (Salmonella typhimurium TA1535, TA1537) and WP2 (Escherichia coli) test systems carried out evinced that UAE and UFE possess any mutagenicity, but have antimutagenic effects. Consequently, the results of this experiment have clearly shown that UAE and UFE have strong antioxidative and antigenotoxic effects that are associated with its antioxidant nature. A detailed study can be performed to determine the antioxidant properties of each compound that will extend the use of lichen extracts in food and pharmacy industries.

Demirtas, M.; Purcek, G.; Yanar, H.; Zhang, Z.J.; Zhang, Z.F.
Quasi-single phase (dilute) Zn-0.3Al alloy was subjected to severe plastic deformation via equal-channel angular extrusion/pressing (ECAE/P), and the effects of ECAP on its room temperature (RT) and high strain rate (HSR) superplasticity and deformation mechanism were investigated. Multi-pass ECAP may refine the coarse-grained microstructure into the fine grained (FG) one. The grain size of Zn-matrix phase decreased down to 2.0m after ECAP. Many spherical Al-rich precipitates decomposed and homogeneously distributed inside the matrix phase. They are ultrafine grained (UFG) α-particles with the grain sizes ranging from 50nm to ~200nm. This special microstructure having FG and UFG micro-constituents brought about an improvement in RT superplasticity even at HSRs. While multi-pass ECAP decreased flow stress of the alloy, its elongation to failure increased substantially depending on the initial strain rates. The maximum elongation was 1000% at a low strain rate of 10-4s-1, and 350% elongation was achieved at a high strain rate of 10-2s-1. Grain boundary sliding (GBS) was found to be the main deformation mechanism in region-II as the optimum superplastic region.
