This study compared the antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content (TPC), phenolic composition, lipid oxidation level, and mineral profiles of extracts obtained from four wild hawthorn species (Crataegus tanacetifolia, C. orientalis subsp. orientalis, C. orientalis subsp. szovitsii, and C. monogyna) collected from northeastern Türkiye. Significant interspecific variations were observed in DPPH, FRAP, and CUPRAC assays. While C. monogyna had the highest reducing capacity and TPC, C. orientalis subsp. szovitsii had the highest DPPH activity. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry analysis showed that catechin, epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, and quinic acid were the major phenolics, and were particularly abundant in C. monogyna. Despite having a high phenolic content, C. monogyna had the highest malondialdehyde level, indicating that phenolics alone were insufficient to fully inhibit lipid oxidation. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry mineral analysis detected high levels of K, Mg, and P in all species. Principal component analysis effectively distinguished the species based on their antioxidant, phenolic, and mineral profiles. Overall, hawthorn fruits were confirmed as valuable sources of natural antioxidants and essential minerals.

Physicochemical properties, phytohormone profiles and quality assessment of honey from the Çoruh Valley of Türkiye

Tosun, Murat; Cengiz, Mahir Murat; Erdoğan, Yaşar; Turan, Metin

In this study, seventeen floral honey samples collected from Türkiye’s Çoruh Valley were examined and a total of 59 parameters were analyzed to evaluate their quality attributes. Accordingly, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), diastase activity, fructose, glucose, sucrose, total fructose + glucose (F + G), the fructose/glucose ratio (F/G), color and δ13C isotope values were determined together with amino acid profiles, organic acid composition, mineral contents, and phytohormone profiles. All chemical and biological data were evaluated using multivariate statistical approaches, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Pearson correlation analysis and Hierarchical Clustering Analysis (HCA), to characterize similarities and differences among the samples. The analytical results demonstrated that honeys from this region comply with established quality standards and exhibit natural purity, balanced chemical composition, and favorable nutritional properties. The detection of diverse phytohormone types and concentrations across the samples, as revealed by the analyses, indicates a rich biochemical signature originating from plant sources. This finding also highlights the functional properties, biological value, and nutritional significance of these honeys. Overall, the results confirm that the floral honeys obtained from Türkiye’s Çoruh Valley are high-quality products in terms of both chemical and biological properties.

A study on free-radical scavenging activity, individual phenolic compounds and element concentration of propolis; [Propolisin serbest radikal temizleme aktivitesi, bireysel fenolik bilesik içerigi ve element konsantrasyonu üzerine bir çalisma]

    Ecem Bayram, Nesrin

The aim of this study was to assess the quality of five propolis samples obtained from Turkey (TP), China (CP), Brazil (BP1, BP2), and Ethiopia (EP). The phenolic compounds of the propolis were identified and quantified using the liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry technique (LCMS/ MS). In addition, quality parameters such as total flavonoid content, total phenolic content, freeradical scavenging activity and element contents were investigated. As a result of LC-MS/MS analysis, the extracts were sorted as TP> BP1> BP2> CP> EP in terms of the total concentration of individual phenolic compounds. Chlorogenic acid was determined as the dominant compound in BP1 and EP, pcoumaric acid as the dominant compound in the BP2 and trans-ferulic acid as the dominant compound in the samples from CP and TP. The concentration of DPPH was higher in TP whereas the ABTS concentration was almost similar to other propolis extracts. The contents of potassium (K), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na) in the propolis samples were in the range of 2416.75- 14416.02 mg/kg, 8.52-613.25 mg/kg, 102.66-1425.82 mg/kg, 523.84-7336.74 mg/kg and 57.65-191.15 mg/kg, respectively. Consequently, it is again supported that chemical characteristics and activity of propolis varies according to its geographical origin with this study.

Macronutrient and micronutrient levels and phenolic compound characteristics of monofloral honey samples

Bayram, Nesrin Ecem; Canli, Deniz; Gercek, Yusuf Can; Bayram, Sinan; Çelik, Saffet; Güzel, Fatma; Morgil, Hande; Oz, Gul Cevahir

This study aimed to obtain data on specific properties of various monofloral honey samples. Palynological, phenolic component, macroelemental and microelemental analyses were conducted and antimicrobial activities of honey samples were determined. In addition, protocatechuic acid for pine, lavender (from Isparta), heather (from Mugla) and cedar honey; gallic acid for carob, oak, lavender (from Antalya), chestnut, sandalwood and heather (from Antalya) honey; caffeic acid for linden, astragalus, chaste honey; syringic acid for rhododendron honey and the quercetin compound for cornelian cherry-citrus honey were observed to be dominant. As a result of the elemental analyses performed with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, it was determined that elemental profiles of all of the honey samples differed, and the total ratio of macrominerals sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium was the highest in the oak honey and the lowest in the cornelian cherry-citrus honey. According to antibacterial activity test results, Gram-negative bacteria were found to be more resistant to the honey samples compared to Gram-positive bacteria. In conclusion, the results of this study confirmed that the origin (blossom or honeydew) and plant source of the honey samples had an effect on their elemental content, phenolic component and antimicrobial activity.
