Perceptions of Electoral Trustworthiness in Turkey a Qualitative Study Based on Political Party Representatives

Kan, Muhammed Enes; Bilgili, Murat Saltuk

Electoral trustworthiness -the safeguarding of electoral processes from distortions, violations, and manipulations- is fundamental to democratic integrity. In emerging democracies such as Turkey, political parties are key actors, shaping and monitoring elections while gaining experience across pre-election, election day, and post-election stages. This study examines political parties’ perceptions of electoral trustworthiness in Turkey through a qualitative provincial case study situated within the Turkish context using semi-structured interviews with provincial, district, and vice-chairs from various parties in a selected province. Data were analyzed via content analysis. Findings suggest that, within the studied province, pre-election concerns involve campaign irregularities, voter pressure, and legislative gaps; election day issues include voter intimidation, limited polling station oversight -especially in rural areas- and challenges for opposition parties in appointing officials and observers; post-election concerns relate to transparency and impartiality of electoral bodies, lack of judicial review over Supreme Election Council decisions, and procedural flaws. These point to an urgent need for reforms and stronger oversight. © The Author(s) 2026. Post-structuralist perspectives on global education: Reconstructing narratives and power dynamics in comparative education

    Aksakallı, Ayhan

This article explores the transformative potential of post-structuralist theories in rethinking global education policies and comparative education practices. It critically examines the power dynamics underlying hegemonic narratives in education and highlights the ways in which these narratives marginalize local knowledge systems and reinforce inequalities. Using Foucault’s notions of regimes of truth and Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizomatic learning, the article demonstrates how post-structuralist frameworks challenge normative assumptions and propose alternative models based on equity, inclusion, and diversity. Local adaptations, counter-narratives, and strategies of resistance are analyzed as key mechanisms for negotiating and transforming global education policies in specific cultural and social contexts. The discussion emphasizes the importance of embracing epistemological pluralism and participatory governance to promote more equitable and inclusive educational practices. Concluding with directions for the future, the article underlines the relevance of post-structuralist approaches for advancing critical research and practice in comparative education.

Cognitive and Emotional Mediators of the Transformation of Adverse Childhood Experiences into Depression, Anxiety, and Stress: Testing a Model in Young Adults

    Akeren, İhsan; Aktaş, Emirhan

Studies show that symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress in college students increase with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). If individuals in young adulthood cannot cope with the negative experiences they were exposed to in childhood, they are at risk of mental health problems later in life. This study aimed to determine whether the effects of the past continue into the present and to examine their scope by testing the effect of ACEs on depression, anxiety, and stress through positive and negative feelings and irrational beliefs. Using stratified convenience sampling, 708 volunteer undergraduate students, 458 female and 250 male, with a mean age of 20.84 years, were reached in their classrooms. In the cross-sectional correlational survey design, Hayes’ PROCESS macro (model 80) was used for conditional process analyses after the regression assumptions were tested. The mediator variables positive and negative feelings and irrational beliefs accounted for about two-thirds of the effect of ACEs on depression (total effect = 0.598, 95% CI [0.442, 0.755], direct effect = 0.209 [0.069, 0.348]), about half of the effect on anxiety (total effect = 0.650 [0.499, 0.802], direct effect = 0.360 [0.214, 0.506]), and more than half of the effect on stress (total effect = 0.676 [0.507, 0.844], direct effect = 0.302 [0.146, 0.458]). Finally, compared to males, females had higher mean scores for ACEs, negative feelings, and depression, anxiety, and stress, and lower mean scores for irrational beliefs. In conclusion, the study shows that the negative effects of the past continue to appear in the present and recommends taking steps to prevent their potential risks for the mental health of young adults.

Artificial Intelligence Supported Online Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education: A Systematic Review With SWOT Analysis

Üstün, Ayşin Gaye; Kayalı, Bünyami; Yavuz, Mehmet

Artificial intelligence-supported online assessment and evaluation (AI-SOAE) systems have the potential to transform assessment and evaluation processes in higher education; however, there is a need for a comprehensive evaluation of the pedagogical, technical, and ethical dimensions of these systems. In this regard, the study systematically examined the characteristics of AI-SOAE systems within the framework of a SWOT analysis. A systematic literature review method was used in the research. Ninety-eight studies published between 2018 and 2025 in the Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and Education Resources Information Centre (ERIC) databases were analysed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The findings show that the strengths of AI-SOAE systems include personalised feedback, advanced assessment processes, increased efficiency, and data-driven decision support mechanisms. In contrast, technical infrastructure limitations, algorithmic biases, data management issues, and negative user experiences were identified as the weaknesses of the systems. The analysis also reveals that AI-SOAE systems offer significant opportunities in terms of pedagogical transformation, digitalisation, and institutional competitiveness; however, they face threats such as data security, ethical concerns, risks to academic integrity, and limited empirical evidence. Consequently, AI-SOAE systems offer context- and application-dependent potential for supporting assessment and evaluation practices in higher education. Effectively realising this potential depends on strengthening technical infrastructure, managing algorithmic risks, and developing transparent, ethical, and institutional policy frameworks. By synthesising the literature in the field of AI-SOAE in a structured manner, this study provides a comprehensive assessment for researchers, educators, and policymakers. © The Author(s) 2026. From Marx to the classroom: Understanding teacher alienation in policy contexts

    Aksakalli, Ayhan

This article examines the phenomenon of teacher alienation through the lens of Marxist theory, exploring how capitalist and bureaucratic structures inherent in educational policies contribute to feelings of disconnection and disenfranchisement among educators. Drawing upon Marx’s concept of alienated labor, the study delves into the ways in which teachers experience alienation within the context of modern education systems. By tracing the historical roots of alienation in capitalist societies, the article highlights the pervasive influence of market-oriented reforms and accountability measures on teacher autonomy and professional agency. Furthermore, the study examines the implications of teacher alienation for both educators and students, emphasizing the detrimental effects on teacher well-being, job satisfaction, and instructional effectiveness. It explores how feelings of alienation can hinder collaboration, innovation, and collective efficacy within educational communities, perpetuating cycles of disengagement and disaffection among educators and students alike. Ultimately, the article calls for a reimagining of education that prioritizes the empowerment and well-being of educators, challenging dominant paradigms and policies that perpetuate teacher alienation. By centering the voices and experiences of teachers, policymakers can work toward creating more supportive, inclusive, and equitable learning environments that foster a culture of collaboration, creativity, and social justice in education.

The Effect of Self-Regulated Learning-Based Practices on Writing Anxiety: A Curriculum-Focused Mixed Study

Kaplan, Kadir; Akeren, İhsan; Gülden, Bahadır

Anxiety is part of daily life, and when it is not controlled, it negatively affects performance and success. One type of anxiety that students experience at school as a result of the pressures of educational life is writing anxiety. In the current study, the role of self-regulated learning skills in reducing writing anxiety was examined. The fifth-grade self-regulated writing program (S-rWP) was developed, tested, and revised to align with the text types specified in the native language (L1) course curriculum. A multi-stage random sampling method was used to determine the participants to whom the final program would be applied, and the mean pre-test writing anxiety scores of the two groups, an experimental group and a control group, were close to each other. An instructor trained in self-regulated learning strategies conducted the seven-session program to the experimental group for 6 weeks, while in the same period the same curriculum was conducted to the control group using the traditional teaching method, and finally post-test measurements were taken. Quantitative data from the mixed-method study showed that S-rWP was effective in reducing writing anxiety compared to the standard teaching method. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the participants, the L1 teacher and the instructor. The results show that S-rWP is effective in reducing writing anxiety, in line with the quantitative findings. The participants provided information to support the findings through their opinions, and the L1 teacher and instructor provided information to support the findings through their observations. The results appear to stem from the overlap between students’ writing planning, implementation, and evaluation processes and the three stages of self-regulated learning (forethought, performance, and self-reflection). However, despite these positive outcomes, several suggestions for future research are proposed, taking into account the study’s limitations. © The Author(s) 2025. Online Purchasing Model for PwD (People with Disabilities) Consumers: Pre and Post Disability Behaviors

    Yilmazel, Sefa Emre

People with Disabilities (PwD) is discussed in the literature as the largest minority in the world. This group generally prefers online shopping instead of store shopping due to the physical difficulties they experience. However, no online shopping model has been developed for this group. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reveal an online purchasing model for PwDs in line with the theory of planned behavior. In this regard, the effects of the variables perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, peer communication, security concern, privacy concern and physical disabilities on consumers’ purchasing intention and subsequent purchasing behavior through subjective norms, attitude and behavioral control were investigated with pre- and post-disability data. In the study, data was collected from participants before (322) and after (546) disability. As a result of this study, it was revealed that online behavior of consumers before and after the disability differed. Especially peer communication made a significant difference in purchasing behavior after the disability. Consumers became more sensitive about security and privacy in their online shopping after the obstacle. In addition, consumers’ perceived usefulness had a significant effect on their attitudes after the disability. Therefore, as a result of the study, an online shopping model for PwD consumers was created.

Optimization of ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration as a pretreatment for microwave drying of beetroot (Beta vulgaris)

Memis, Habibe; Bekar, Fevzi; Guler, Cagri; Kamiloğlu, Aybike; Kutlu, Naciye

The aim of this study was to optimize drying conditions during ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration and subsequent microwave drying of red beetroot using the Box-Behnken design. For this purpose, ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration was performed at different ultrasonic powers (50, 75, and 100 W), sonication times (20, 40, and 60 min), and salt concentrations (0%, 15%, and 30%). The subsequent drying procedures were conducted with 231, 518, and 805 W microwave power. The best condition was selected as 5.15% salt concentration, 20 min sonication time, 50 W ultrasonic power, and 716.45 W microwave power. The responses obtained under optimum conditions were determined as 68.06%, 9.54 mg GAE/g dm, 28.23, 42.66, and 3.08 for DPPH• % inhibition, total phenolic content, L*, a*, and b* values, respectively. While favorable impacts on color were detected for the applied pretreatments, the DPPH• scavenging activities of the dried beetroot were determined to be more significant after ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration. Furthermore, the drying kinetics of beetroot were evaluated according to the Midilli et al. model. When the fit to the model was investigated, it was compatible at R2> 0.90 level. As a result, the ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration pretreatment performed before the microwave drying method preserved the quality characteristics of beetroot samples and was successfully applied.

Optimization of ohmic heating-assisted osmotic dehydration as a pretreatment for microwave drying of quince

    Kutlu, Naciye

In this study, the ohmic heating system was used as a novel application for osmotic dehydration of quince. After osmotic dehydration, samples were dried by microwave. In this regard, the effects of process variables such as electrical field strengths (20, 30 and 40 V/cm), holding time (10, 20 and 30 minutes), microwave power (90, 180 and 270 W) and sucrose concentration (0%, 25% and 50%) on dielectric constant, dielectric loss factor, rehydration ratios, total phenolic compounds and color values were investigated by response surface methodology (RSM). Optimum conditions were found as 40 V/cm electrical field strength, 30 min holding time, 16.67% sucrose concentration and 270 W microwave power. Total phenolic content, rehydration ratio, color differences and dielectric properties of the novel method were found to be higher than that of control. Moreover, Midilli and Wang & Sing models gave the superior fit to the moisture ratio data obtained during drying.

Active vibration control of a blade element with uncertainty modeling in PZT actuator force

Sivrioglu, Selim; Bolat, Fevzi Cakmak; Erturk, Ercan

The aim of this research is to attenuate the vibrations of a blade structure with an attached piezoelectric actuator using robust multi-objective control. The force obtained from a piezoelectric patch loading has uncertainties due to the complicated shape (airfoil) of the blade element. A parameter-dependent model of the force equation is developed to understand the possible variation range of the actuation force. The modal analysis of the blade is performed to find vibration mode frequencies, and an aerodynamic load is generated experimentally to create steady-state vibration on the blade. A state-space model is obtained by considering certain vibration modes and the parameter-dependent part of the force in the input vector is taken outside of the plant model. The robust stability filter is modified with parameter dependency to have a cluster of the filter. Two different multi-objective controllers are designed with different design objectives. The designed controllers are implemented in experiments and performances of the controllers are compared using frequency and time domain responses. It is shown that the flexible blade vibrations are successfully suppressed with the proposed mixed norm robust controllers under the effect of steady-state aerodynamic disturbance with different air speeds. It is observed in experimental results that the performances of the H∞/H2 controller are better than the H2/H∞ controller.
