- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Production of high strength and colored concrete using textile waste reactive dyestuffs as superplasticizers
Erdem, Emin; Aydın, Gülsüm Merve; Kılınçarslan, Rafet
Herein, we are reporting the effect of reactive dyestuffs, currently widely used in textile industry, on the hydration of Portland cement and their usability as water-reducing additives. For this purpose, solutions containing various ratios (0,005- 0,016 g/100 ml tap water) dyestuffs as superplasticizers were used as mixing water for cements. The effects of these dyes on the hydration of Portland cement were determined by physical tests and DSC-TG-DTG, FT-IR and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was found that the dyestuff added to the cement reduced the cement water/cement ratio (2–7%) and increased the compressive strength (8–13%), depending on the molecular size and structure, and it was also determined that it had no negative effect on cement hydration.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Essential Parameters for the Reconstruction of Society: A Critical Analysis of Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt, Verse 10
Aras, Zakir
In the tenth verse of Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt, the fundamental parameters set by Allah for the structuring of Muslim communities can be delineated as the following: brotherhood, reformation, nation, identity, justice, piety, and community. A close analysis of the verse reveals a hierarchy among these parameters. While the brotherhood forms the first layer of the pyramid, the final layer is the community. The supporting layer that sustains all other levels is the layer of justice. At a fundamental level, the ultimate goal of these layers is to attain Allah’s mercy. Consequently, at the pinnacle of these layers lies the pyramid of mercy. The study concludes that there are no clear demarcation lines among these layers; instead, they are interconnected and interdependent. This analysis provides important clues for strengthening the social and moral structure of Muslim societies. The hierarchical structure of these parameters and the relationships between them play a key role in ensuring social solidarity and justice.

Objective: In our study, we investigated the effect of reflexology on patient satisfaction, pain and vital signs after abdominal surgery. Method: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial with the participation of 156 abdominal surgery patients hospitalized in the general surgery unit of a training and research hospital. Personal Information Form, Visual Analogue Scale and Newcastle Nursing Care Satisfaction Scale were used in data collection. We performed the data analysis with One-way analysis of variance, Chi-squared test, paired samples t-test, and independent samples t-test. Results: When the pain, vital signs and satisfaction levels of the experimental and control groups were compared, the pain intensity of the experimental group was found to be lower and the level of satisfaction was higher after reflexology (p<0.01). After reflexology, the blood pressure was closer to 120/80 in the experimental group, the respiratory rate was between 16-22 (number/minute), the difference between the experimental and control groups were statistically significant (p<0.01). There was no statistically significant difference between the pulce oximetry values between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: Surgical pain and non-optimal vital signs that are not well managed after surgery causes various complications and decrease patient satisfaction. The results of our study emphasize the power of reflexology in effective surgical pain management and normalizing vital signs and increasing patient satisfaction. We suggest that reflexology be performed to patients following abdominal surgery.

Dirican, Ebubekir; Özcan, Halil; Uzunçakmak, Sevgi Karabulut; Takım, Uğur
Objective: Apoptosis is programmed cell death that occurs by several pathways. Caspase-3 is induced by active caspase-9 via the intrinsic pathway. The aim of this research was to explore the expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 in schizophrenia patients and healthy samples. Methods: RNA was isolated from the peripheral blood of 39 schizophrenia patients’ and healthy samples. After cDNA synthesis, real time PCR (RT-PCR) was used to analyse caspase-3 and caspase-9 gene expression. The severity of psychopathological symptoms of schizophrenia was evaluated using the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale for schizophrenia (PANSS) and Clinical Global Impressions (CGI). Results: The expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 genes was higher in schizophrenia patients than in healthy samples (p = 0.012, p = 0.002, respectively). The increase in caspase-3 gene expression was significant with being male, smoking and with a duration of less than 6 years (p = 0.047, p = 0.049, p = 0.034, respectively). On the other hand, the increase in caspase-9 gene expression was significant in patients who is smoke, have children, and are under 33 years old (p = 0.040, p = 0.043, p = 0.045, respectively). A significant positive correlation was detected between the caspase-3 and caspase-9 gene expression (r = 0.3218, p = 0.049). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that caspase-3 and caspase-9 gene expression may activate cell death mechanisms by intrinsic apoptotic genes. Furthermore, caspase-3 and caspase-9 may play essential roles in different ways in schizophrenia. Hence there is a need to further study the apoptotic mechanism with expanded patient populations.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the transition of primiparas becoming mothers scale
Kirbaş, Zila Özlem; Odabaşi Aktaş, Elif; Özkan, Hava
Background: The transition to motherhood is an important life event in a woman’s life and represents an important developmental process that brings physical, psychological and social changes to gain a new role. However, research on the transition to motherhood in Turkish society is scarce. There is a need for a comprehensive, practical and reliable tool to evaluate the transition to motherhood in primiparous mothers. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Transition of Primiparous Becoming Mothers Scale (TMP-S) to evaluate the transition process of primiparous mothers to motherhood. Methods: This methodological research was carried out in obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics, pediatric outpatient clinics, and family health centers of a hospital in Türkiye. The sample consisted of primiparous mothers of 0 to 6- month-old babies who visited clinics and family health centers for routine postnatal examinations (n = 305). After evaluating the language equivalence and content validity of the scale, test-retest reliability, internal consistency and construct validity were examined. Factor analysis, Pearson’s correlation, retest reliability, and Cronbach’s alpha were employed to evaluate structural validity and reliability. Results: The final TPM-S had two dimensions with 25 items. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution, which accounted for 59.276% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model fit of the two-factor model also reached a satisfactory model ft after modification. The comparative fit index was 0.894, the Tucker‒Lewis index was 0.882, and the root mean square error of approximation was 0.079. The content validity index of the scale ranged from 0.56 ~ 0.77. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.93 for the total scale, and the test–retest reliability was 0.96. Conclusions: It is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating the transition to motherhood among primiparous mothers of 0 to 6 month-old babies in Türkiye. Turkish researchers and healthcare professionals can routinely apply this measurement tool to primiparous mothers in the first six months after birth to evaluate their transition to motherhood.

The aim of this study was to optimize drying conditions during ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration and subsequent microwave drying of red beetroot using the Box-Behnken design. For this purpose, ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration was performed at different ultrasonic powers (50, 75, and 100 W), sonication times (20, 40, and 60 min), and salt concentrations (0%, 15%, and 30%). The subsequent drying procedures were conducted with 231, 518, and 805 W microwave power. The best condition was selected as 5.15% salt concentration, 20 min sonication time, 50 W ultrasonic power, and 716.45 W microwave power. The responses obtained under optimum conditions were determined as 68.06%, 9.54 mg GAE/g dm, 28.23, 42.66, and 3.08 for DPPH• % inhibition, total phenolic content, L*, a*, and b* values, respectively. While favorable impacts on color were detected for the applied pretreatments, the DPPH• scavenging activities of the dried beetroot were determined to be more significant after ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration. Furthermore, the drying kinetics of beetroot were evaluated according to the Midilli et al. model. When the fit to the model was investigated, it was compatible at R2> 0.90 level. As a result, the ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration pretreatment performed before the microwave drying method preserved the quality characteristics of beetroot samples and was successfully applied.

Ayazoglu, Rabil; Kadakal, Mahir; Akkoyunlu, Ebubekir
We consider the parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with the exponents depending on the spatial variables logistic source and nonlinear signal production: ut = ∆u−χ∇·(u∇υ)+f(x, u), (x, t) ∈ Ω×(0, T), 0 = ∆υ−υ+uγ in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ RN (N ≥ 1) with smooth boundary, subject to nonnegative initial data and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, where χ > 0, γ ≥ 1 and ∂ν∂ denotes the outward normal derivative on ∂Ω. The logistic function f fulfilling f(x, s) ≤ ηs− µsα(x)+1, η ≥ 0, µ > 0 for all s > 0 with f(x, 0) ≥ 0 ∀x ∈ Ω, where α : Ω → [1, ∞) is a measurable function. It is proved that if 1 ≤ α(x) < ∞ for all x ∈ Ω such that essinfx∈Ω α(x) > γ or essinfx∈Ω α(x) = γ with µ > χ, then there exists a nonnegative classical solution (u, υ) that is global-in-time and bounded. In addition, under the particular conditions γ = 1 and f(x, s) = µ(s − sα(x)+1), if µ is sufficiently large, the global bounded solution (u, υ) satisfies ∥u(·, t) − 1∥L∞(Ω) + ∥υ (·, t) − 1∥L∞(Ω) ≤ Ce− Nk+2 t for all t > 0 with k = min n χ42 12o , C > 0. The global-in-time existence and uniform-in-time boundedness of solutions are established under specific parameter conditions, which improves the known results.

A broadband, stable, and noniterative free-space method is proposed for dielectric constant ϵr′ determination of low-loss dielectric slabs from reflection-only measurements through simple calibration standards (reflect and air). It is applicable for dispersive samples and does not require thickness information. Simulations of nondisperive and dispersive samples are performed to validate our method. Dielectric constant measurements of polyethylene and polyoxymethylene samples (9-11 GHz) are carried out to examine the accuracy of our method.

Yildiz, Umut; Ozturk, Erdogan; Sefaoglu, Firat; Gul, Volkan; Toktay, Zehra
The storage of the harvested sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) before the processing stage is crucial, particularly regarding quality and durability. To maintain the quality of the beet prior to processing, appropriate storage conditions must be provided. Although siloing is a standard method for beet storage, this process may have some negative effects. Given the limited information on the impact of siloing on yield and quality, it is essential to determine the optimal duration of siloing. This study investigated the effect of different siloing periods on the root and weight and quality criteria of sugar beet in 2020 and 2021. Four siloing periods (immediately after harvest, ten days after harvest, 20 days after harvest, and 30 days after harvest) were analyzed. The siloing periods significantly affected both the root weight and quality criteria in both years of research. It was determined that the examined characteristics were significantly influenced by the treatments, with weight loss, dry matter content, sugar content, and sugar yield of roots increasing with the length of the siloing period. The results highlight the importance of the waiting time during the siloing period for sugar beet stored in silos after harvest. To minimize losses in the examined characteristics, it is recommended that the processing occur immediately after harvest. If it must be delayed processing is recommended between 10-20 days post-harvest.

Yılmaz, Metin; Cimşit, Canan; Keven, Arzu; Karaali, Rabi
The refrigerants used in traditional vapor compression refrigeration systems are harmful to the ozone layer and contribute to global warming. The demand for refrigeration is increasing because of global warming. In this study, for the first time, an energy, exergy, environmental, and enviroeconomic (4E) analysis was performed using different refrigerants and nanoparticles to reduce the energy required in low-temperature vapor compression cascade refrigeration systems and to determine more environmentally friendly nanorefrigerants. The R290 refrigerant was used for the Low-Temperature Circuit (LTC), while the High-Temperature Circuit (HTC) used RE170, R1234yf, R600, R600a, and R450A refrigerants. The nanoparticles used in the analysis were Al2O3, CNT, CuO, TiO2, ZnO, and SiO2. The R600 nanorefrigerant performed the best, whereas the R1234yf nanorefrigerant performed the worst. The results indicate that the CuO nanoparticles provided the highest performance. In addition, the results showed that the R290+R600-CuO nanorefrigerant emitted 11 % less CO2 than the pure R290+R600 refrigerant. The nanorefrigerants provide a more environmentally sustainable option because of their high efficiency and lower energy consumption than conventional refrigerants.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Effect of Fe Amount on Microstructure and Fluidity of A356 Alloy
Durmus, M.; Dispinar, D.; Gavgali, M.; Colak, M.
The most important factor affecting the production of quality parts with aluminum alloys is the quality of molten metal. One of the determining factors in molten metal quality is the minimization of trace impurity elements in the alloy. One of the most harmful impurities among these elements is Fe, and its amount is a determining factor in its negative effect. It is known that Fe negatively affects the quality of aluminum, causing a decrease in mechanical properties. Most of the Fe in the alloy forms intermetallic from needle-like to complex Chinese-script structures. In this study, carbon steel and stainless-steel rods were immersed in the liquid metal at casting temperatures of 700°C and 750°C in A356 aluminum casting alloy and were subjected to diffusion for 1, 2 and 5 hours. Subsequently, a 4-channel flow test mold with various section thicknesses was used. All samples were measured by measuring the liquid metal advance distances of all sections in mm. Then, microstructure analyses were performed on the obtained sections. As a result, it is observed that as Fe diffusion increases, liquid metal advancement distances decrease and Fe intermetallics form in the microstructure. © The Author(s) 2025. Open Access. Soylu, Özgür Bayram; Adeleye, Bosede Ngozi; Okur, Fatih; Emikönel, Murat
This paper examines the role of tourism in foreign direct investment-growth relations in upper-middle-income countries. We deploy static and dynamic panel analysis to evaluate how tourism indicators influence the impact of FDI net inflows on growth using unbalanced panel data on 29 upper-middle-income countries from 2010 to 2019. The tourism indicators are receipts, arrivals, and expenditures. The results from static and dynamic analyses indicate that for the most part (1) FDI and tourism exert asymmetric effects on growth, (2) tourism indicators reduce the negative effect of FDI on growth, (4) trade openness is a positive and significant predictor of growth, and (5) domestic credit negatively contributes to growth. Deductively, results evidence that tourism indicators are critical drivers of economic growth in upper-middle-income countries. Overall, tourism receipts show the largest influence on FDI to spur the most appreciable impact on growth. Despite this, the fact that tourism indicators cannot eliminate the destructive impact of FDI on economic growth shows that tourism development policies should be based on a greener and more sustainable ground, taking into account the effects of the coronavirus.

Prospective technicians for elderly care are indispensable elements that should be included in the relevant system to meet the ever-increasing care needs of the aging world population and increase the quality of care. This research was conducted to evaluate the attitudes of students in the elderly care program at the associate degree toward the older adults and their willingness to provide care. The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study comprised 525 volunteer students in elderly care programs in five vocational schools of higher education located in northeastern Turkey between June 2020 and September 2020. Mean, standard deviation, number, percentage, independent t-test, and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. The study showed that the mean age of the students involved in the study was 20.3 ± 1.6. 77.7% of them were female, and 61.9% were in the first grade. Students’ willingness to care for older adults was found to be at a moderate level (36.3 ± 6.0). The students had a negative attitude (137.4 ± 26.7) about aging and elderliness. The willingness of male students to care for older adults was significantly higher (p <.05). Those who did not live with an older adult in the same house before had a more negative attitude toward them (p <.05). To get rid of personal and social stereotypes and have a positive attitude toward older adults, students should be provided to work in clinical environments that will allow them to spend more time with them.

This randomized-controlled trial aimed to investigate the effect of bed exercises on postoperative anxiety, pain, early ambulation and mobilization. This study was conducted with a randomized-controlled trial design and in the general surgical clinic of a research and training hospital. A total of 120 patients (60 in the experimental group and 60 in the control group) scheduled for major abdominal surgery took part in the study. The data were collected using a patient information form, the Anxiety Specific to Surgery Questionnaire and the Visual Analog Scale through face-to-face interviews. The patients in the experimental group performed 15-min bed exercises on the day of their operation, as well as on the postoperative first and second days, and the control group underwent only the routinely performed procedures in the clinic. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and t-tests. The sample of our study included major abdominal surgery patients. Ambulation was achieved at a mean time of 4 h earlier in the experimental group. On the postoperative first and second days, the patients in the experimental group had mean mobilization durations that were approximately 2 h longer compared with the patients in the control group. Moreover, the postoperative pain and anxiety levels of the patients in the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the patients in the control group (p < 0.05). We recommend that bed exercises be performed to lower anxiety and pain severity, achieve early ambulation and increase the duration of mobilization among patients following major abdominal surgery.

We aimed to enhance the magnetic force efficiency of Maglev systems without increasing total weight. For this aim, we divided YBCO bulks into three slices horizontally to utilize the YBCO-permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) interaction surface as much as possible. We used whole YBCO above PMGs with different magnetic pole directions (PMG-A and PMG-B) in two lying positions of transversal and longitudinal and investigated levitation and guidance force performances. It is determined that levitation and guidance forces by using YBCO in transversal lying mode are bigger compared to the longitudinal mode. For sliced YBCO, the maximum levitation force increased by 69% and 78%, while the guidance force enhancements are determined as 212% and 91%, compared to the whole YBCO above PMG-A and PMG-B, respectively. The levitation and guidance force density with respect to the total mass of unit a set of slices YBCO increased by 92% and 106%, respectively, compared to the whole YBCO above PMG-B in transversal mode. Since the higher levitation force and the lower total weight of the onboard unit are important parameters in point of the energy efficiency in Maglev and other levitation applications, the result of this study supplies useful data for the engineers and industrial partners.

Majidian, Sina; Tapkın, Serkan; Tercan, Emre
Evaluation of tunnel performance in seismic-prone areas demands efficient means of estimating performance at different hazard levels. The present study introduces an innovative push-over analysis approach which employs the standard earthquake spectrum to simulate the performance of a tunnel. The numerical simulation has taken into account the lining and surrounding rock to calculate the rock-tunnel interaction subjected to a static push-over displacement regime. Elastic perfectly plastic models for the lining and hardening strain rock medium were used to portray the development of plastic hinges, nonlinear deformation, and performance of the tunnel structure. Separately using a computational algorithm, the non-linear response spectrum was approximated from the average shear strain of the rock model. A NATM tunnel in Turkey was chosen for parametric study. A seismic performance curve and two performance thresholds are introduced that are based on the proposed nonlinear seismic static loading approach and the formation of plastic hinges. The tunnel model was also subjected to a harmonic excitation with a smooth response spectrum and different amplitudes in the fully-dynamic phase to assess the accuracy of the approach. The parametric study investigated the effects of the lining stiffness and capacity and soil stiffness on the seismic performance of the tunnel.
