Some potential drug active substances with the ability to reduce the effects of radiation on human tissues and cells were investigated. For this purpose, eight different types of sulfamide derivatives were synthesized and nuclear radiation protection parameters were determined. Neutron radiation reduction parameters such as the half-value layer effective removal cross-sections, mean free path, and the number of particles passing through the sample were determined with GEANT4 code. Additionally, the gamma radiation attenuation parameters of the materials examined were determined using Phy-X/PSD software in the energy area of 0.015-15 MeV. These parameters are the half-value layer, mass attenuation coefficient, mean free path, exposure buildup factor and effective atomic number. Neutron radiation absorption experiments were applied using an 241Am-Be fast neutron source. All results obtained for neutron radiation were compared with paraffin and water. It has been found that the ability of sulfamide derivatives to absorb these radiations is superior to reference materials. To determine whether these derivatives could have adverse effects on human health, their genotoxic potential was determined using the Ames/Salmonella bacterial reversion test. The results showed that these derivatives can be considered genotoxically safe in tests at concentrations up to 5 mM. Thus, it is suggested that the derivative materials examined in this study can be used as active substances for a drug to be made for protection against both neutron and gamma radiation.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Strongly n-polynomial convexity and related inequalities
Ataman, Canan; Kadakal, Mahir; İşcan, İmdat
In this paper, we introduce and study the concept of strongly n-polynomial convexity functions and their some algebraic properties. We prove two Hermite-Hadamard type inequalities for the newly introduced class of functions. In addition, we obtain some refinements of the Hermite-Hadamard inequality for functions whose first derivative in absolute value, raised to a certain power which is greater than one, respectively at least one, is strongly n-polynomial convexity. Also, we compare the obtained results with both Hölder, Hölder-İşcan inequalities and power-mean, improved-power-mean integral inequalities and show that the result obtained with Hölder-İşcan and improved power-mean inequalities give better approach than the others.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ2In vitro digestibility and predicted glycemic index of commonly consumed some Turkish traditional foods
Koseoglu, Sabiha Zeynep Aydenk; Celikel, Seda
This study was planned to determine in vitro glycemic indices of some traditional foods frequently consumed by Turkish nation and to evaulate their effects on nutrition. Glycemic indices of roasted chickpea, Turkish bagel, tarhana, bulgur, Turkish delight, baklava, pişmaniye and kadayıf species; white bread was taken as reference (70) and analyzed in vitro by taking digestive system model. Glycemic index of Turkish bagels and bulgur was high (> 70), medium (55-70) of tarhana and low (<55) of roasted chickpea. There was a significant relationship between the hydrolysis indices of Turkish Delight and other sweet foods and also glycemic indices (p <0.05). Absorption rates of all foods increased and reached the highest level in parallel with their hydrolysis indices after 3 hours. Turkish delight had the highest RAG (glucose released from starch and sugars within 20 min incubation), while RAG and RDS (rapidly digestible starch) of the roasted chickpea were low. Chickpeas with the lowest glycemic index according to their digestibility and effects on blood glucose should be recommended by nutrition professionals to provide glycemic control and controlled consumption of the delight with the highest glycemic index.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ3Beamforming radiation properties of absorbing/transparent zones-added horn antenna
Teber, Ahmet
In this study, we present beamforming of radiation patterns on a transmitter horn antenna by mounting an electromagnetic wave absorber, in which electromagnetic wave absorber is fabricated as concentric zones. The concentric zones consist of an absorbing material of manganese soft spinel ferrite blended with multi-walled carbon nanotubes with the thickness of 1 mm installed on the aperture of the antenna working in Ku-band. We have experimentally measured scattering parameter of transmission, S21, using a vector network analyser to perform radiation patterns in polar coordinates. As compared to the radiation properties of air horn antenna and absorbing/transparent zone-added horn antenna produces an appreciable effect to concentrate radiation beam in the main, side and back lobes with reducing side and back lobe levels for each frequency in H-plane. For the radiation pattern in E-plane, we have observed the suppressed side lobes at three frequencies of 15 GHz, 17 GHz and 18 GHz. The results indicate that the absorbing/transparent zone keeps an important role for further development of the applications of directional antennas so that the effective radiation is to be significantly concentrated.

Microbial polysaccharides can find distinct applications as stabilizer agents including synthesis of nanoparticles. In this study, a dextran-type exopolysaccharide (EPS) was used as the stabilizer agent for the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-Dex) with antimicrobial characteristics. UV–vis spectroscopy analysis was used to test the formation of AgNPs-Dex. The uniform morphology at around 10 nm size was observed for AgNPs-Dex by TEM analysis and importantly EDX analysis demonstrated the embedment of Ag+ ions within dextran as the stabilizer agent. XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of AgNPs-Dex and FTIR analysis demonstrated the interactions of dextran functional groups with silver. DSC and TGA analysis showed the alteration in the thermal stability of AgNPs-Dex compared to the stabilizer dextran. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of AgNPs-Dex were determined against food originated pathogenic bacteria and fungi and important inhibition levels were observed at 1 mg ml−1 concentration of AgNPs-Dex and this activity was observed to be concentration dependent.

The bioreduction of prochiral ketones offers efficient access to chiral secondary alcohols, which are potentially beneficial precursors for producing many biologically active compounds and natural products. This bioreduction process can be affected by different parameters when whole-cell of biocatalysts such as Lactic Acid Bacteria strains are applied. In this context, this paper proposed an I-optimal design-based model to optimize culture parameters such as temperature, pH, incubation period, and agitation speed for asymmetric bioreduction of 2-methyl-1-phenylpropan-1-one (1) with Lactobacillus fermentum BY35 as a biocatalyst while achieving the highest conversion rate (cr) and enantiomeric excess (ee). The optimum settings of the four culture parameters and the cr and ee values were found using the proposed optimization model as follows: pH = 6.5, temperature = 25 °C, incubation period = 38.5 h, agitation speed = 200 rpm, the ee value = 98.78%, and the cr value = 98.92%. After the validation of the process, the cr and ee values were found to be > 99% and > 99%, respectively, while using the optimum operating conditions from the optimization model. Thus, the results of the optimization model are consistent with the results of the validation experiment. It is also noted that this paper is the first to optimize culture parameters using the proposed I-optimal design-based model for an asymmetric reduction.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus l.) could alleviate negative effects of stocking density in laying hens
Kaya, H.; Karaalp, M.; Kaynar, Ö.; Tekçe, E.; Aksakal, A.; Bayram, B.
The study was conducted to determine the effects of stocking density (SD, 5 or 7 layers/cage) and tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) diet supplementation at four levels (0, 1.2, 6 and 12 g/kg feed) on performance, certain egg characteristics, serum, liver, egg yolk and small intestine bacteria parameters in laying hens. The experiment was carried out over a period of 8 weeks, with 192 Lohman Brown commercial hybrids at 50-w-age. The results showed that an increased SD reduced feed intake (FI; p<0.01) and egg production (p<0.05), but had no effect on the weight gain, feed conversion ratio, damaged egg ratio, egg weight and egg quality (p>0.05) parameters. The supplementation of tarragon to the diet reduced the FI and damaged egg ratio (p<0.01), and improved egg production and FCR (p<0.01). While an increased SD reduced serum total antioxidants (p<0.05), it elevated corticosterone (CORT) and total oxidant serum (TOS) (p<0.05). Tarragon was found to enhance total immunoglobulin (p<0.05), but to decreased the CORT and TOS of the serum (p<0.05). An increased SD raised the malondialdehyde (MDA) in the serum (p<0.001), liver (p<0.05) and yolk (p<0.001). Tarragon supplementation reduced MDA of the serum (p<0.05), liver (p<0.001) and yolk (p<0.001). E. coli and total Mesophilic Aerobic Bacteria counts in the small intestine were raised (p<0.001) with increased SD. Tarragon decreased (p<0.05) mesophilic aerobic bacteria. It was thus found that, tarragon supplementation can be considered generally effective in improving performance parameters, alleviating stress-induced negativities, reducing lipid peroxidation, regulating the immune system and controlling some intestinal microorganisms.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ3The role of Turkey in the world hazelnut production and exporting
Uzundumlu, Ahmet Semih; Kurtoğlu, Seval; Şerefoğlu, Coşkun; Algur, Zafer
The aim of this study is to estimate the future of the global hazelnut sector for 2019-2025 using the data of 1961-2018. ARIMA model was used to forecast hazelnut production and export quantity. Hirschman Herfindahl Index (HHI) and Concentration Ratios (CR) have been used to determine market status. According to HHI and CR, the world hazelnut market was oligopoly in 1961-2018 and the biggest player in this market was Turkey. Because Turkey was the largest manufacturer and marketer of hazelnut in the industry, 64% of the production and 67% of the exports of world hazelnut were provided by Turkey as the average in the period 2011-2018. Turkey thus determines the world price in hazelnut. According to the concentration ratio, CR1 will be 0.63 and 0.67 in the export and production; this means that about 63-67% of the world hazelnut production and export will have been provided by Turkey from 2019 to 2025. The number of countries producing, and exporting hazelnuts has risen from 13 to 32, and 9 to 58, respectively in the past fifty-eight years in the world. According to the findings of this study, it was forecasted that the competition degree of Turkey’s hazelnut export market will decrease during the period from 2019 to 2025. The results obtained from this study will help policymakers to monitor the way for hazelnut marketing in Turkey.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Asymmetric reduction of prochiral aromatic and hetero aromatic ketones using whole-cell of Lactobacillus senmaizukei biocatalyst
Çolak, Nida Sezin; Kalay, Erbay; Şahin, Engin
Asymmetric bioreduction of aromatic and heteroaromatic ketones is an important process in the production of precursors of biologically active molecules. In this study, the bioreduction of aromatic and hetero aromatic prochiral ketones into optically active alcohols was investigated using Lactobacillus senmaizukei as a whole-cell catalyst, since whole-cells are less expensive than pure enzymes. The study indicates enantioselective bioreduction of various substituted aromatic ketones (1–16) to the corresponding (R)-and (S)-chiral secondary alcohols (1a–16a) in low to excellent enantioselectivity (6–94%) with good yields (58–95%). In addition, heteroaromatic prochiral ketones 1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethanone (17) and 1-(furan-2-yl)ethanone (18) were reduced to (R)-17a and (R)-18a in enantiopure form with excellent conversion (>99%) and yields. These findings show that L. senmaizukei is a very important biocatalyst for asymmetric reduction of both 6-membered and 5-member heteroaromatic methyl ketones. This method promising a green synthesis for the synthesis of biologically important secondary chiral alcohols in an environmentally friendly and inexpensive process.

İspirli, Hümeyra; Dertli, Enes
Oligosaccharides are one of the functional ingredients to be used in food technology. In this study, by using an active glucansucrase GTFA-ΔN E81 in the acceptor reaction of mannose, mannose-containing oligosaccharides were produced and their functionality was tested. The formation of the oligosaccharides were visualised by TLC analysis and mannose-containing oligosaccharides up to DP 7 were determined by LC-MS analysis. The presence of the (1,6)Glc and (1,3)Glc units within the oligosaccharides were determined by NMR analysis. The in vitro immune-modulatory functions of the mannose-containing oligosaccharides were determined but no induction in IL-4, IL-10, IL-12 and TNF-α cytokine levels were detected. Importantly this oligosaccharide mixture showed prebiotic effect by triggering the growth of tested probiotics and not affecting the growth of pathogen strains. Our findings reveals the potential of the role of glucansucrases for the production of functional oligosaccharides.

Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin
Microbiological, physicochemical, and textural characteristics, and oxidative stability was investigated of butter produced from raw cream treated with high-pressure homogenisation (HPH) at 0 (control), 10, 20, 30, 50, or 70 MPa. HPH treatment of cream increased lightness and decreased yellowness of butter. Firmness of all butter samples was between 97 (control) and 380 N (70 MPa). HPH decreased the spreadability of butter dependent on increasing pressure. A monomodal fat particle size distribution was determined in all butter samples; D[3.2] ranged from 25.25 to 125.5 μm and HPH decreased average particle size compared with the control. The induction time of butter ranged from 27.40 (control) to 39.61 h (70 MPa). Above 50 MPa, Salmonella, and yeast and moulds were completely inactivated whilst coliforms and staphylococci were not detected in butter from HPH treated cream at 70 MPa, indicating that HPH can improve the microbial quality of butter produced from raw cream.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ1Development of a Fuzzy Exponentially Weighted Moving Average Control Chart with an α-level Cut for Monitoring a Production Process
Kaplan Göztok, Kader; Uçurum, Metin; Özdemir, Akın
Statistical quality control is a useful approach that applies to statistical techniques for monitoring a production system. These charts are effective to monitor the process under certain conditions. On the other hand, the fuzzy set theory is an appropriate tool to deal with an uncertain situation. This paper is fourfold. First of all, triangular fuzzy numbers with an α-level cut technique are used for each sample. The α-level cut technique is sensitive to satisfy the process requirement. Second, a fuzzy exponentially weighted moving average (FEWMA) control chart is proposed with the α-level cut technique. The proposed FEWMA detects small shifts under uncertain situations while using a unity technique for samples. Third, the fuzzy target-focused process capability index (FCpm) index is proposed to measure the fuzzy process performance. Then, a case study is presented to monitor a pumice block plant using the FEWMA control chart with the α-level cut and measure the process performance with the FCpm index. Comparative studies are also presented. By using the proposed FEWMA control chart with the α-level cut, the accuracy and the flexibility of control specification limits are reported for the case study.

Güner, Sait Barış; Abdioğlu, Murat; Öztürk, Kemal; Çelik, Şükrü
In this work, in the first time, we have investigated the levitation and lateral force properties of bulk and cut-pasted bulk GdBCO samples at different temperatures and different cooling heights (CH) to determine the effect of cut-pasted process on the magnetic levitation force behaviour. The measurements of superconducting characteristics indicated that the attractive and repulsive force values of cut-pasted GdBCO sample are slightly lesser than those of GdBCO bulk sample. The maximum repulsive and attractive force values obtained as 15.45 N and −4.56 N for GdBCO bulk and as 14.78 N and −3.92 N for cut-pasted GdBCO samples at 37 K. Although there are many fabrication methods as melt-textured growth (MTG), top seeded infiltration growth (TSIG) and TSMG to produce large HTS samples, the desired large sample size and the sample shape compatible with the superconducting magnetic bearing systems are not still sufficient for the technological applications. In this study, the performed cut-pasted process and obtained magnetic levitation force data can be using for the increment sample size and the desired sample shape in the needed different geometry and size for superconducting magnetic bearing systems.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Role of metal quality and porosity formation in low pressure die casting of A356: Experimental observations
Gursoy, O.; Nordmak, A.; Syvertsen, F.; Colak, M.; Tur, K.; Dispinar, D.
Porosity is one of the major problems in casting operations and there are several discussions in the literature about the porosity formation in aluminum castings. Bifilms are the defects that are introduced into the melt by turbulence. They can be detected with reduced pressure test and presented numerically by measuring bifilm index. The measure of bifilm index is the sum of total oxide length given in millimeters from the cross-section of reduced pressure test sample solidified under 0.01 MPa. In this work, low pressure die casting (LPDC) unit was built in an attempt to enhance the producibility rate. The unit consists of a pump housing that was placed inside the melt in the melting furnace where the pressure was applied instead of the whole melt surface. It was observed that the melt quality of A356 alloy was deteriorated over time which had led to higher porosity. This was attributed to the increased oxide thickness of the bifilm by the consumption of air in between the folded oxides. A relationship was found between bifilm index and pore formation.

Turan, Muhittin
In the present paper, Navier’s method based on the first-order shear deformation theory for bending analysis of two-directional functionally graded beams subjected to various sets of boundary conditions is presented. In Navier's method, different trigonometric series functions are proposed for each boundary condition. The accuracy of these proposed functions was investigated and compared with the literature. It is also presented in a parametric study. The governing equations are derived according to Lagrange’s principle. The variation of the components of the beam material in the volume is defined by a power-law rule. The normalized maximum transverse deflections, the normalized axial and transverse shear stresses are obtained for various boundary conditions, gradation exponents (px, pz) in the x- and z-directions, and the slenderness (L/h). The trigonometric series functions used in this study give results that are quite compatible with the literature. In addition, the parametric study contributes to the literature.

Recent researches conducted have focused on the possibility of using bacteriocin produced by lactic acid bacteria both (LAB) as protective cultures and as natural antimicrobial agents in dry cured meat products such as pastırma. In the present study, 50 lactic acid bacteria strains, previously isolated from various traditional pastırma samples, were tested for their antimicrobial potentials. Determination of antagonistic activities against food-borne pathogenic strains (Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus) were done by using agar-spot and well diffusion assays. Then, active isolates were identified by using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. According to the results, 11 of tested LAB were determined with significant bacteriocinogenic potential and these were assigned to as 1 Lactobacillus plantarum, 9 L. plantarum subsp. plantarum and 1 Pediococcus pentosaceus. In conclusion, it was reached that the isolated/identified bacteriocin-producing lactic acid bacteria strains from pastırma samples have a significant potential to prepare pure or crude bacteriocin preparations.
