Strength and Durability Performance of Clayey Soil Stabilized with Lime and Marble Powder

    Yilmaz, Fatih; Demir, Ersin

This paper investigated the effect of freezing-thawing and wetting-drying cycles on the strength and durability of clay soil stabilized with lime and marble powder. The test samples were prepared by adding 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of marble powder, without and with 6% lime to the soil which is a high plasticity clay (CH) according to the Unified Soil Classification System. Unconfined compressive strength tests were performed after 7 and 28 days of curing periods. The durability behavior of the samples was examined by applying freezing-thawing and wettingdrying cycles to the prepared samples. The results of this study show that the presence of marble powder in the soil mixture has an important role in the improvement of strength. An increase in the number of wetting-drying cycles does not decrease the volumetric stability of the samples stabilized with marble powder. The use of lime and marble powder together increased the strength values compared to the natural soil and the use of lime only. It was concluded that the co-use of lime and marble powder had a positive effect on the strength and durability behavior of high plasticity clayey soil.

Güler, Cüneyt; Güven, Onur; Biçgel, Birsen F.; Kurt, Mehmet A.; Yıldırm, Ümit

The aim of this study is to investigate the origin of the highconcentration (1512 μg/L) of arsenic (As) in the olddrinking water source of Yalıncak village (Hafik, Sivas). For this purpose, 48 samples were collected from the rocksoutcropping in the recharge area of the drinking watersource. The major oxide contents of the rock samples weredetermined by XRF method, mineralogical compositionsby polarizing microscope and XRD methods and Asconcentrations of minerals were determined by using SEM- EDS method. As revealed by these analyses, the source ofarsenic in the waters of the region was found out to betuffite unit, containing pyroxene and plagioclase minerals,as well as volcanic glass fragments of different origins andsizes. It has been detected that arsenic oxide (As2O3)concentrations in rock samples vary between 0.01% and0.14% and some minerals contain As up to 14%. It wasdetermined that arsenic pollution in surface andgroundwater in the region was caused by the dissolution (bywater-rock interaction) of FeAsS (arsenopyrite) and BAsO4(boron arsenate) minerals found in the tuffites of theEocene age Bozbel formation in the Sivas Basin.

The earthquakes in erzincan (xo-xv. centuries)

    Aktaş, Yasemin

Having an important position in Anatolia, Erzincan was a social, cultural and commercially developed city. The city, which continued its development during the hegemonies of Mengücek, Seljuk and İlhanlı, was adversely affected by a number of political and social events. The fact that Erzincan is located on the Northeast Anatolian Fault Line is an important factor in experiencing these negative events. The earthquakes on this fault line have been the most devastating disaster in the region. In Erzincan, subjected to severe earthquakes during the history, significant destructions had occurred and thousands of people had lost their lives. Secondary disasters such as floods and landslides caused by severe ground shakes play an important role in the increase of casualties. Earthquakes in the Middle Ages have been tried to be explained due to certain reasons. The reason for the earthquakes in Erzincan is explained by being connected to a number of events such as God’s punishment for the bad lives of people or the mismanagement of the administrators. In this study, the earthquakes in Erzincan between XI-XV. centuries and their consequences are dealt with.

Usability of Midyat Stone Wastes in Soil Stabilization

    Yilmaz, Fatih; Duman, Vedat

Improving the geotechnical properties of weak soils is described as soil stabilization. In this study, industrial wastes of Midyat stone were used to carry out soil stabilization. Midyat stone wastes, which are evaluated in the improvement of a low plasticity clay soil, were mixed with natural soil at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% additive percentages. In the light of the data obtained, the presence of a different binder was needed and lime was chosen as the primary binder. Index, strength and durability tests were carried out in mixtures containing 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% Midyat stone waste with and without lime. When the results of the experiments were examined, it was determined that the use of Midyat stone waste as an additive alone was ineffective on strength and durability values. In use with lime, 49% increase in strength has been determined compared to only lime sample. As a result of the study determined that the effect of Midyat stone wastes on freezing-thawing is very limited and more effective on wetting-drying, it was concluded that these wastes can be used for stabilization of low plasticity soils with lime.

Fineness Effect of Pozzolanic Additive on Strength in Soil Stabilization

    Yilmaz, Fatih

Improvement of physical, chemical, mechanical and hydraulic properties of poor bearing soil is called soil stabilization. Within the scope of this study perlite, has inadequate cementing ability by oneself, was used as a pozzolanic additive in stabilization of clayey soil. Lime was chosen as a primary binder due to its high CaO content. Soil was mixed with 6% of lime (optimum lime ratio) and 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% of perlite. Pozzolanic additive perlite was evaluated in natural and finely granulated forms in stabilization study. Geotechnical properties such as index and strength features of mixtures and how this properties may change by fining perlite was considered in the scope of this study. After 84 days of curing period, the highest unconfined compressive strength was determined as 3196 kPa in the samples containing lime and 20% perlite. Samples in which fine perlite was used as an additive material, the highest unconfined compressive strength was reached 3408.9 kPa in samples containing lime and 15% fine perlite. As a result of this study, in which by fining of perlite lower perlite rate gives higher strength values, it was found that fineness of pozzolanic additive perlite has direct effect in strength values
