Vinyl acetate is a volatile organic compound widely used in the chemical industry, and there is a need for effective and economic removal of this volatile organic compound from wastewater and waste gases in chemical industries. This study aims to determine the biological treatability of vinyl acetate both under aerobic and anoxic conditions using mixed cultures obtained from a wastewater treatment plant. Considering the previous studies in the literature, testing the biodegradability of vinyl acetate under both aerobic and anoxic conditions, together with evaluating the effect of other mechanisms, such as adsorption and volatilization, on the removal of vinyl acetate, can be regarded as the prominent part of this study. Wastewater containing artificially prepared vinyl acetate was treated in a batch bioreactor, and performance and kinetic constants were investigated. Aerobic treatment under batch conditions conformed to the Haldane biokinetic equation, and the biokinetic constants of μmax, Ks, and Ki were calculated as 0.66 h−1, 19.67 mg L−1 and 50.56 mg L−1, respectively. Anoxic treatment under batch conditions conformed to the Monod biokinetic equation, and the biokinetic constants of μmax and Ks were calculated as 0.31 h−1 and 33.88 mg L−1, respectively. Experiments revealed that vinyl acetate was not volatile, and its adsorption and biological treatment performances were 28% and 72%, respectively. The mixed culture had a very high performance for removing vinyl acetate under batch operating conditions. The primary mechanism of vinyl acetate removal was found to be biological treatment.

In this study, treatment of lead containing wastewater using sewage sludge ash obtained from the incineration unit in the domestic wastewater treatment plant in Gaziantep province in Turkey was investigated. The main purpose of the study is to determine the potential of using the treatment sludge ash, which comes out as waste in the treatment plant, in the treatment of wastewater of another industry. As a result of this study, the most suitable adsorption conditions were determined and focused on the kinetics of adsorption. In the experiments, the lead adsorption capacity of sewage sludge ash was determined as 122 mg g-1 at 0.5 g L-1 adsorbent concentration in wastewater containing 100 mg L-1 Pb2+under optimum conditions. As a result of the research, it was determined that the adsorption reaction proceeds according to the pseudo second degree reaction and is suitable for the Langmuir isotherm. As thermodynamic constants, & UDelta;H & DEG; = 7.407 kJ mol-1 and & UDelta;S & DEG; = 33.25 J mol-1 were determined. As a result of this, it was determined that the adsorption reaction was endothermic, spontaneous and random, and adsorption was physical adsorption. The results show that sewage sludge ash can be used in the treatment of water containing high concentrations of Pb2+.

In this study, removal of colour from wastewaters prepared synthetically using Bomaplex Blue CR-L was investigated using raw and activated pumpkin seed shells by adsorption in a batch system. The effects of stirring speed, adsorbent concentration, dye concentration, temperature and pH on colour removal were investigated, and adsorption capacities of raw and activated pumpkin seed shells were determined. In addition, adsorption kinetics, isotherm coefficients, activation energies and thermodynamic parameters were calculated. The optimal adsorption conditions were determined as pH = 2, stirring speed of 200 rpm, adsorbent concentration of 10 g L-1 and 30 °C. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum removal efficiency of Bomaplex Blue CR-L using raw pumpkin seed shells was 73.01 %. This value rose to 79.71 % after activation processing was applied. Experimental adsorption data show that the adsorption is more suited to the Langmuir adsorption model and works in accordance with the pseudo-first-order kinetics model. As a result of thermodynamic research, ΔH° and ΔS° were 31.515 kJ mol-1 and 109.952 kJ mol-1 K-1 for the raw adsorbent, respectively. For the activated adsorbent, ΔH° and ΔS° were 43.118 kJ mol-1 and 152.237 kJ mol-1 K-1, respectively. The activation energy of adsorption was calculated as 10.918 kJ mol-1 for the raw adsorbent and 9.882 kJ mol-1 for the activated adsorbent.

In this study, the removal of Mn2+ ions from waters by the adsorption method using ash obtained from a treatment plant sludge burning unit, which is treatment plant waste and mostly disposed of in a landfill, was investigated. By determining the most suitable conditions for adsorption, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic values were determined. In the experiments, 63.9% removal efficiency was achieved using 10 g/L adsorbent concentration for 10 mg/L Mn+2 under optimum conditions. As a result of the research, it was determined that the adsorption proceeds according to the pseudo-second-degree reaction and abides by the Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic constants of ΔH°=-4.866 kJ/mol and ΔS°= 21.44 J/mol were determined. As a result of this, the reaction was exothermic, spontaneous, and random, and adsorption was physical adsorption. As a result of the study, sewage sludge ash can be used in the treatment of water containing low concentrations of Mn2+.

Lead (Pb) removal process from wastewater is an important issue to prevent health problems for people. For this particular purpose, a low-cost adsorbent may be beneficial for improving the adsorption capacity for the Pb removal process. The aims of this paper are four-fold. First of all, a D-optimal experimental design was selected to reduce experimental runs and its cost. Second, the effect of four adsorption design factors, stirring speed (rpm), adsorbent dosage (g), pH level, and initial metal concentration (ppm), was examined. Also, the yellow natural stone, which is from Bayburt, Turkey, was used as a cheap adsorbent for the Pb removal process from the solu-tion. Third, a novel weighted mean-squared error optimization model was developed to obtain optimal adsorption levels for adsorption factors. Besides, a verification study was conducted to verify the results of the adsorption experiment. Finally, the lead (Pb(II)) removal capacity of the yellow Bayburt stone was obtained to be 46.031 mg/g, and the results of the experiment from the proposed methodology showed a good performance for the removal study.

In this study, kinetics of the removal of Cr (III) from the waters by adsorption have been investigated using montmorillonite natural clay that was obtained from the vicinity of Narman, Erzurum in Turkey. Activation energy, thermodynamic values and adsorption kinetics were determined. In addition, the trials were repeated by subjecting to the same adsorbent activation process. The values found for these two adsorbents were compared. As a result of the experiments, the parameters affecting the adsorption kinetics were examined. It was determined that the adsorption process could be best depicted by pseudo second order reaction kinetics. Using pseudo second order reaction rate constants, ΔH° =-25.791 kJ mol-1 and ΔS° = 106.19 joule mol-1 were calculated for raw adsorbent. For the activated adsorbent, ΔH° =-18,806 kJ mol-1 and ΔS° = 79.37 joule mol-1 were calculated. That ΔG° increases as temperature increases indicates; adsorption is more spontaneous at high temperatures. Negative ΔH° values show that the reaction is exothermic. The positive values of ΔS° indicate increased randomness at the adsorbent/solution interface during the adsorption of chrome.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ1Removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions using modified sewage sludge ash
Kul, S.
The study aims to determine Cu(II) adsorption from wastewater in the laboratory condition using modified sewage sludge ash as adsorbent which was obtained from a thermal drying and incineration facility. This procedure was completed with an inexpensive pollutant material which has high metal-binding capacity and is available in abundant amounts. During experiments, the effects of particle size, pH, stirring speed, initial ion concentration, adsorbent dosage and temperature were investigated. Adsorption equilibrium was obtained in 10 min. Maximum Cu(II) removal was calculated as 83.63% with 20 mg L−1 initial Cu(II) ion concentration and 5 g L−1 adsorbent dosage. Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test was performed to test the conformity of the data obtained as a result of the study to variance analysis, and it was determined that the data were distributed normally (p > 0.05). Levene test was performed for homogeneity test, and it was determined that the data were distributed homogeneously (p > 0.05). Langmuir was determined as the most suitable isotherm model for Cu(II) adsorption. Adsorption kinetics abided by the pseudo-second-order model. Based on kinetic studies, the adsorption process was endothermic with maximum adsorption capacity calculated as 7.53 mg g−1. The results of thermodynamic research showed the adsorption reaction was spontaneous (ΔG° < 0), endothermic (ΔH° > 0) and reversible (ΔS° > 0 and close to zero).

One of the environmental concerns deals with the removal process of pollutants in water and wastewater. In this paper, a removal process was used to eliminate pollutants in water and wastewater. The aim of this paper was to obtain an optimum adsorption condition for the highest metal ions adsorbed (MIA) mg/g. For this particular purpose, a Taguchi L18 design was conducted. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio was analyzed for optimum adsorption levels. The analysis of variance was also performed to evaluate the effect of each adsorption condition on MIA (mg/g) values. Moreover, an optimization model was also proposed to find the best optimal setting of adsorption levels. Then, the confirmation tests were performed using optimum coded levels of the adsorption parameters for the verification purpose. The results of the experimental study showed a good performance that Cu(II) removal capacity was found to be 43.66 mg/g. To the best of our knowledge, this research is the first to study natural stone as an efficient, inexpensive and cheap adsorbent for the removal process.

As(III) adsorption on NiFe2O4 nanoparticles were systematically investigated by controlling parameters such as stirring rate, pH, initial arsenic concentration, contact duration, temperature, and adsorbent dose. It was observed that the amount of adsorbed arsenic concentration is strongly depended on pH and temperature. The temperature and pH give rise to significant changes in the amount of adsorbed arsenic. As compared with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms models, the latter is found to be well suited. Pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intraparticle diffusion models were applied to adsorption equilibrium data obtained from the analysis of arsenic with diverse amount of initial concentration.

Serencam, Huseyin; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal; Senturk, Hasan Basri
Rosa canina seeds (RCS) is considered as a low-cost and promising adsorbent in removal of metal ions; hence, in the present study, we aimed to test the adsorptive removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions by utilizing RCS in a batch process. After characterization of RCS by using several techniques, the effects of various experimental parameters such as initial pH of aqueous solution, contact time, initial Cu(II) concentration, RCS concentration, temperature, and electrolyte concentration were studied upon the adsorption process. The desorption conditions of Cu(II) ions from the loaded RCS were also evaluated. Maximum Cu(II) adsorption was found to occur at pH 6.0 and the equilibrium was established after 60 min of contact time. The adsorption isotherms were described by means of Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin Radushkevich models. The adsorption kinetics were analyzed using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich and intraparticle diffusion models and the adsorption data were well described by the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters such as the Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS) changes were also evaluated and it has been found that the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in the temperature range of 278-313 K.

Yilmaz, Alper Erdem; Boncukcuoglu, Recep; Kocakerim, Muhtar; Karakas, Ibrahim Hakki
The potential of removing Bomaplex Red CR-L dye from electro coagulation sludge has been investigated for different Bomaplex Red CR-L concentrations with varying adsorbent amount, temperature, pH and stirrer speed. Removal of Bomaplex Red CR-L is found to be high at lower pH values. The maximum adsorption of the dye has been achieved in aqueous solutions using 0.5g of calcinated sludge from electro coagulation at a pH of 2.0 within 20min. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were tested and it was found that the Langmuir equation was fitted better than the Freundlich equation. Maximum adsorption capacity (q m) was calculated as 192.31mg g -1 at 333K. In addition, the adsorption data obtained at various temperatures were successfully applied to pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. The rates of adsorption were found to conform to pseudo second-order kinetics with good correlation (R 2≥0.9997). This study showed that calcinated the sludge from electrocoagulation has a highly adsorbent capacity.
