Using solar greenhouses in cold climates and evaluating optimum type according to sizing, position and location: A case study

    Çakir, Uğur; Şahin, Erol

This study deals with a comparison among five common greenhouse types with regard to total solar radiation gaining rates in greenhouse using season under some assumptions. Additionally, possibility of using greenhouses in cold climate regions is investigated. We analyzed five greenhouse types and developed a script in MATLAB platform for the solar radiation availability. This model is applicable and suitable for other buildings and places on the world. Even-span, uneven-span, vinery, semicircular and elliptic types of greenhouses have been analyzed. A "k" value (ratio of length to width of greenhouse) and greenhouse azimuth angle (GAA) are described. Seven different floor area are assigned for each greenhouse type such as 50m2, 100m2, 150m2, 200m2, 250m2, 300m2 and 400m2, respectively. For each floor area, k value is assigned from 1 to 10. Each greenhouse is oriented in 90 different angles according to south facade. Seasonal total solar energy gaining rates is computed individually for all possible greenhouse types, area, k number and orientation. Then a comprehensive comparison is made to determine the optimal greenhouse. The results show that greenhouses are usable and suitable for using in cold climate regions to increase the productivity. In addition, the elliptic type is the optimum one in all analyzed types of greenhouses for Bayburt conditions for all floor areas. It is followed by uneven-span, even-span, semi-circular and vinery type of greenhouses respectively. Shape and type of the roof are main effective parameters on solar energy gaining rates of greenhouses. Elliptic greenhouse should be preferred on the band of the latitude of Bayburt, unless there is restrictive factor like sizing and terrain.

Toward a sustainable energy future in Turkey: An environmental perspective

    Serencam, Huseyin; Serencam, Ugur

As long as the energy future of Turkey is concerned there is a consensus among all parties involved in the subject that a strong sustainability based on diverse range of renewable and variety of sources with efficient and fair use of energy is a must. The main criterion in this approach is to use energy with the least possible greenhouse gases and other harmful emissions. A shift in focus to meeting the needs of energy service sector will be immediately felt in the sustainable energy future in Turkey. Another important aspect of the sustainable energy future of Turkey is that all energy users, as more knowledgeable and active participants will be more involved in various stages of the process. However, Turkey has a long way to reach this vision, because of growing greenhouse emissions related to energy production and utilization of alternative energy is slow. Besides, the intensity of energy of the Turkish economy is decreasing slower than many other OECD countries. In addition, energy consumption per person in Turkey is far above the service needs, even for modern lifestyles. There are substantial obstacles on the way to a sustainable energy future of Turkey, such as various aspects of economic structure, a misdirected energy market process, and a lack of vision among the decision makers.

Energetic and exergetic comparison of air to air and air to water heat pumps according to evaporator conditions

Çomakli, Kemal; Çakir, Uǧur; Şahin, Erol; Kuş, Ayşegül Çokgez

This paper presents an experimental energetic and exergetic comparison for a heat pump system that can be run in different modes as air to air and air to water. Components of the heat pump do not change when the running mode changes, except for the condenser. This means that some external and internal effects (like compressor type, pipe lines) that can affect the system performance will be the same for each running mode. The comparison which was made in this study demonstrates which system leads to an efficient conversion and supply of energy and exergy. In the analysis, four balance (mass, energy, entropy and exergy) equations are applied to the system for the two modes. Exergy and energy efficiency values for both systems are given, while exergy destructions in each of the systems are determined and presented. It is seen that the heat pump unit which has the highest COP value is the air to air type (3.45-3.8); second is the air to water type (3.35-3.41). The exergy efficiency of the air to air heat pump (29-32%) is higher than the exergy efficiency of the air to water type heat pump (24.1-25). Ranking of the exergy destruction rates of the two heat pump types from high to low is as follows: air to air and air to water.

The relation of collector and storage tank size in solar heating systems

Çomakli, Kemal; Çakir, Uǧur; Kaya, Mehmet; Bakirci, Kadir

The most popular method to benefit from the solar energy is to use solar water heating systems since it is one of the cheapest way to benefit from the solar energy. The investment cost of a solar water heating system is very low, and the maintenance costs are nearly zero. Using the solar energy for solar water heating (SWH) technology has been greatly improved during the past century. A storage tank is used in many solar water heating systems for the conservation of heat energy or hot water for use when some need it. In addition, domestic hot water consumption is strongly variable in many buildings. It depends on the geographical situation, also on the country customs, and of course on the type of building usage. Above all, it depends on the inhabitants' specific lifestyle. For that reason, to provide the hot water for consumption at the desirable temperature whenever inhabitants require it, there must be a good relevance between the collectors and storage tank. In this paper, the optimum sizes of the collectors and the storage tank are determined to design more economic and efficient solar water heating systems. A program has been developed and validated with the experimental study and environmental data. The environmental data were obtained through a whole year of operation for Erzurum, Turkey.

The role of cogeneration systems in sustainability of energy

Çakir, Uǧur; Çomakli, Kemal; Yüksel, Fikret

Cogeneration system (CHP) is one of the ways to save the energy and use the energy efficiently. When compared to separate fossil-fired generation of heat and electricity, CHP may result in a consistent energy conservation (usually ranging from 10% to 30%) while the avoided CO 2 emissions are, as a first approximation, similar to the amount of energy saving. In terms of sustainability, one of the primary considerations is energy efficiency. Sustainable energy is considered as a kind of energy which is renewable and continuous, meaning that the use of such energy can potentially be kept up well into the future without causing harmful repercussions for future generations. In this study, environmental benefits and sustainability aspects of cogeneration systems and importance of those systems to the use of sustainable energy are underlined. To support this idea, first we have referred some scientific studies previously made on cogeneration systems and then we have used our own case study. The case study made on gas engined cogeneration system was applied for a hospital to show the sustainability aspects of cogeneration systems.

Statistical Downscaling of Monthly Precipitation Using NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Data for Tahtali River Basin in Turkey

    Fistikoglu, Okan; Okkan, Umut

Statistical downscaling methods describe a statistical relationship between large-scale atmospheric variables such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, etc., and local-scale meteorological variables like precipitation. This study examines the potential predictor variables selected from the National Center for Environmental Prediction and National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis data set for downscaling monthly precipitation in Tahtali watershed in Turkey. An approach based on the assessment of all possible regression types was used to select the predictors among the NCEP reanalysis data set, and artificial neural network (ANN)-based downscaling models were designed separately for each station in the basin. The results of the study showed that precipitation, surface and sea level pressures, air temperatures at surface, 850-, 500-, and 200-hPa pressure levels, and geopotential heights at 850- and 200-hPa pressure levels are the most explanatory NCEP/NCAR parameters for the study area. It was concluded that ANN-based downscaling models can be implemented to downscale coarse-scale atmospheric parameters to monthly precipitation at station scale by using the above parameters as inputs in the study area.

Energy production, consumption, policies and recent developments in Turkey

    Toklu, E.; Güney, M.S.; Işik, M.; Comakli, O.; Kaygusuz, K.

Many factors to be appropriately addressed in moving towards energy sustainability in Turkey are examined. These include harnessing sustainable energy sources, utilizing sustainable energy carriers, increasing efficiency, reducing environmental impact and improving socioeconomic acceptability. The latter factor includes community involvement and social acceptability, economic affordability and equity, lifestyles, land use and aesthetics. On the other hand, Turkey, with its young population and growing energy demand per person, its fast growing urbanization, and its economic development, has been one of the fast growing power markets of the world for the last two decades. Turkey is heavily dependent on expensive imported energy resources that place a big burden on the economy and air pollution is becoming a great environmental concern in the country. In this regard, renewable energy resources appear to be the one of the most efficient and effective solutions for clean and sustainable energy development in Turkey. Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of most of these renewable energy sources. This article presents a review of the potential and utilization of the energy sources in Turkey.
