- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ3From black box to pedagogical partner: Students’ sense-making of LLM-based automated assessment
Kara, Abdulkadir; Yıldırım, Serkan
While current educational research on automated assessment heavily emphasizes technical validity, a significant gap remains in understanding students’ sustained, real-world experiences with these systems in authentic learning environments. This study examines students’ experiences with a large language model-based automated assessment system embedded in the regular flow of a university course. The study employed a mixed-methods design with 47 university students over a seven-week period. Quantitative data were obtained from system interaction logs and student feedback ratings, while qualitative data were collected from focus group interviews with 24 students and 175 written feedback responses. The results reveal that students perceive the LLM-based assessment system as a learning assistant, an impartial evaluator, and a self-assessment tool. The transparency of explanations was identified as a decisive factor in building trust in the algorithmic system by helping students understand the rationale behind scores and feedback. Sustained interaction with the system triggered a shift from high-frequency trial and error to more efficient and strategic participation, indicating that the assessment criteria were gradually internalized. The system appeared to create an environment free from perceived social judgment, providing favorable conditions for productive failure, repeated attempts, and self-directed revision. Overall, the study demonstrates that artificial intelligence can be positioned as a tool that scales pedagogical intent without replacing the teacher and can be effectively integrated within the framework of human–AI complementarity in higher education.

As the use of artificial intelligence increases in areas where people are active in our daily lives such as education and health, the comparison of human and artificial intelligence has started to be discussed. Many artificial intelligence programmes are commanded by humans and artificial intelligence creates products in line with expectations. In this study, it is aimed to compare the drawings of pre-service science teachers about the concept of universe with the universe visuals created by artificial intelligence. Case study was selected as the research model. The study group consisted of 24 pre-service science teachers studying in the 2nd and 4th grades of science teaching. The worksheet prepared by the researchers and the received expert opinion was used as a data collection tool. During the application process, pre-service teachers made drawings related to the concept of universe and described these drawings during two lesson hours. Then, they made drawings related to the concept of universe of artificial intelligence with the descriptions they entered into Microsoft Bing Search application. As a result, it was determined that pre-service teachers had different views in their drawings about the concept of universe. It is seen that the drawings of the pre-service teachers about the concept of universe and the visuals created by artificial intelligence are mostly like each other. In half of the drawings, the universe drawings of the pre-service teachers were more comprehensive, while in half of the drawings, artificial intelligence made more comprehensive drawings. Based on this result, it can be said that human perception and artificial intelligence products are in parallel with each other. Various suggestions were presented in line with the results of the study.

Filiz, Tunahan; Demir, Mustafa; Kaya, Metin
Evaluating the impacts of instructional intervention programs on students with reading difficulties is important for setting guidelines to teachers, researchers, and policy-makers. The aim of this research is to examine how these interventions initiatives impact the reading abilities of students diagnosed with reading difficulties (RD). 38 impact sizes obtained from 17 meta-analysis studies are analysed with second order meta-analysis method. These studies included are carried out between 1999 and 2023, and focus on the effects of instructional intervention programs on the reading abilities of individuals who experience difficulties in reading. Finally, in the analysis, it is decided that the impact of instructional intervention programmes on students with RD is mid-range (g=.50). Also, instructional intervention programs caused important differences according to the type of intervention, quality level, and the year of publication on the reading abilities of individuals with RD. It is determined that comprehension strategy instruction (CSI) intervention programs are more efficient than foundational reading skills instruction (FRSI) and multicomponent instruction (MI) intervention programs. It is necessary to make more experimental studies to determine if instructional interventions cause meaningful differences in terms of the characteristics of participant students. It can also be beneficial to carry out primary meta-analysis studies that test the impact of instructional interventions on the reading abilities of individuals with RD who are determined with standardized tests.

In addition, it was aimed to reveal the effect of these applications on computational thinking skills. Furthermore, we aimed to reach the opinions of the experimental group students about the materials they used, STEM applications, and the application process. A mixed method was used with a sample consisting of 89 students in grade 7 of a secondary school. An achievement test, a scale of levels of computational thinking, and learning diaries were used as tools for data collection. The data were analyzed using t-test and content analysis. It was found that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of achievement in favor of the experimental groups. In terms of computational thinking, there was a significant difference in favor of the experimental groups, except for the creativity aspect of computational thinking skills. Based on the findings obtained with the computational thinking skills scale the study had a positive impact on most aspects of computational thinking. Accessed through the learning diaries students' views on learning with STEM applications were generally positive. In particular, the opinions on computer-supported materials pointed to a very satisfactory process. The findings suggest that the inclusion of STEM activities and the use of computer technology in education contribute to students' computational thinking skills and learning.
