Tracking particle near a flat surface in digital video microscopy

    Yücel, Harun

Digital video microscopy (DVM) is an important tool to obtain quantitative information about underlying physics in colloidal systems. DVM, however, has the overlap problem caused by particle's diffraction pattern when the detected particles are close to contact. This overlapping problem limits the tracking methods in determining accurate particle position that reflects all interactions exerting to particles or objects in colloidal studies. The problem occurs not only between two spherical particles close to each other but also when a spherical particle is close to a rod shaped particle which have a flat surface. In this study, the simulation results on the tracking spherical particle placed near the flat surface of a rod particle in 2D digital video microscopy are reported. This work shows that the overlap problem can be resolved by using a fraction of the intensity distribution of a spherical particle which is close to a flat surface.

Threshold effect on particle tracking algorithms

Yücel, Harun; Velu, Sabareesh K. P.

Automated particle tracking algorithms are widely used by soft matter physicists as a research tool to detect and construct the trajectories of micron-sized particles in ffuids. Analyzing these trajectories will uncover the physics of the investigated particles mainly on the type of motion they undergo making them suitable for potential applications. A plethora of methods has been proposed and used for detection and tracking. In this work, we examine the performance of two commonly used tracking algorithms in terms of threshold dependencies in digital video images. One of them is the centroid method (CM), a well-known and used algorithm and the other is radial symmetry method (RSM) which is recently proposed. Here, we generate the synthetic digital video images consisting of randomly placed multiple particles and compare the absolute errors on the particle detection by varying threshold values. Our results suggest that both algorithms show dependence on the threshold value and on comparison RSM algorithm performs better than the CM algorithm when the noise level is zero. Moreover, the measured absolute errors show a strong dependence on threshold values when noise levels are increased (up to 20) especially for the RSM algorithm.

Examination of absorption effects at the Compton to coherent scattering intensities X-rays using Fe-Ca and Fe-Ti binary compounds with WDXRF

Boydaş, Elif; Boydaş, Mustafa Gökalp; Allm, Bünyamin

Matrix absorption effects have been examined with scattered X-rays by using WDXRF system for Fe-Ca and Fe-Ti binary compounds. Fe as analyte and elements which some of them the K absorption edge just below the characteristic K X-ray energies of the analyte (Fe) as matrix have been chosen. Pure and binary with Fe ratio ranging from 10% to 90% samples were prepared with these elements. These samples have been analyzed in WDXRF system. At the end of measurement, the coherent and Compton scattering X-rays data of Rh Kα X-rays from these samples have been obtained. Matrix absorption effects have been examined by calculating coherent / Compton scattered X-rays intensity ratio.

Determination of K shell XRF parameters and K to L shell vacancy transfer probabilities of ferromagnetic 3d transition metals

Allm, Bünyamin; Uǧurlu, Mine; Han, Ibrahim; Demir, Lütfü

In this study, K shell X-ray fluorescence cross-sections (σKα, σKβ and σK), K shell fluorescence yields (ωK) and K to L shell vacancy transfer probabilities (ηKL) of ferromagnetic 3d transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni) were investigated to understand how the relationship between ferromagnetism and these values changes with atomic number by using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technique. The all obtained experimental and theoretical results were comparatively given as a function of the atomic number. It was clearly observed that all of the investigated parameters depend on the atomic number and the ferromagnetism state of the atom.

The speed control of DC motor under the load condition using PI and PID controllers

    Corapsiz, Muhammed Reşit; Kahveci, Hakan

In this study, it was aimed to compare PI (Proportional-Integral) and PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controllers for speed control of Permanent Magnet Direct Current (PMDC) motor under both load and without load. For this purpose, firstly, the mathematical model was obtained from the dynamic equations of the PMDC motor and the obtained mathematical model was transferred to the simulation environment and modeled using Matlab/SIMULINK. Following the modeling process, PI and PID controller structures were formed, respectively. Secondly, after these structures were formed, the PMDC motor was run without any controller. Then, the control of the PMDC motor with no load was provided by using PI and PID controllers. Finally, the PMDC motor were loaded under the constant load (TL = 3 N.m.) for each condition and selected time period (t = 3 s). The obtained result for each control operations was comparatively given by observing effects of loading process on systems. When the obtained results were evaluated for each condition, it was observed that PID controller have the best performance with respect to PI controller.

Buildup factors and kerma for Al2O3 and SiO2 in the energy range 0.015-15MeV

Yllmaz, Demet; Allm, Bünyamin; Akkuş, Tuba; Güzeldir, Betül

The energy absorption buildup factors (EABF) have been calculated for some thermoluminescent dosimetric materials (Al2O3 and SiO2) in the energy region 0.015-15MeV up to the penetration depth of 40 mean free paths (mfp). Also, kerma relative to air has been determined for these materials. It is observed that the energy absorption buildup factors and kerma relative to air depend on the photon energy and chemical content. Also, the energy absorption build up factors are found the highest in intermediate energy whereas the lowest in low- as well as high energies.

Some physical properties of Co-doped GaAs thin films grown by thermionic vacuum arc

Şenay, Volkan; Özen, Soner; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan; Mohammadigharehbagh, Reza

Cobalt doped GaAs thin films with the thickness of 100 nm and 200 nm were deposited on glass substrates by a thermionic vacuum arc system. The optical and surface properties were investigated as functions of the film thickness. The refractive index of the films decreased with the increasing thickness. A band gap value of 1.42 eV was obtained for the 100 nm film and 1.38 eV for the 200 nm film from the Tauc plots of (αhν)2 vs. hν. According to the results obtained from the AFM studies, the root mean square surface roughness of the films were nm and 3.13 nm for the 100 nm and 200 nm film, respectively.

Investigation of the surface free energy of the ITO thin films deposited under different working pressure

Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan

This study discusses the influence of working pressure on the surface energy of the ITO thin films produced by radio frequency magnetron sputtering method. Optical tensiometer (Attension Theta Lite) is used for evaluating wetting behavior of the water droplet on the film surface and Equation of State method was selected to determine surface free energy for this study. Equation of state method does not divide the surface tension into different components such as polar, dispersive, acid-base. It is calculated the surfaces' free energy measuring the contact angle with a single liquid. The surface free energy value was in the range of 15-31 mN/m. Also, the transmittances were determined in the wavelength range between 200 and 1000 nm using the UNICO 4802 UV-Vis double beam spectrophotometer. Transmittances of the produced ITO thin films are greater than %70 in the visible range.
