Dijital yazmada web 2.0 aracı olarak padlet kullanımına yönelik öğretmen adayı görüşleri: yapay zekâ destekli özelliklere ilişkin yansımalar

    Banaz, Emrullah

Investigating the association of reading habits and attitudes with meaningful living: The mediating role of subjective well-being

Özbilen, Uğur; Güven, Ahmet Zeki; Şahin, Tuğrul Gökmen; Banaz, Emrullah

This study explores the impact of reading habits on Turkish language teachers' perception of a meaningful life, with a particular focus on the mediating role of subjective well-being. Drawing upon positive psychology and narrative identity theories, the research aims to highlight the cognitive and emotional mechanisms through which reading fosters existential meaning. Data were collected from 328 Turkish language teachers through validated self-report scales and analyzed using path analysis with structural equation modeling (SEM). Both direct and indirect effects were tested using bootstrapped mediation analysis. The results revealed that reading habits and attitudes significantly predicted perceptions of a meaningful life, both directly and indirectly via subjective well-being. Although the direct path was modest in effect, subjective well-being emerged as a strong mediator. No significant demographic differences were found regarding perceptions of meaningful living. The findings suggest that reading is not merely an intellectual activity but a multidimensional experience that contributes to personal meaning-making and psychological well-being. The study underscores the need for teacher education programs to integrate reading as a tool for holistic development, extending beyond professional competence to emotional and existential enrichment.

An analysis of the artificial intelligence concerns of those learning turkish as a foreign language from the perspective of various variables

    Banaz, Emrullah; Demirel, Osman

This study aims to identify the levels of anxiety towards artificial intelligence (AI) among individuals learning Turkish as a foreign language and to examine whether this anxiety shows significant differences according to variables such as gender, level of education, course level, and the use of AI in language learning. Employing a quantitative research design, the study adopted a survey model; data were collected online from 170 international students learning Turkish at A2, B1, B2, and C1 levels at various language teaching centres in Türkiye. The Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale was administered to participants; independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used in the analyses as parametric tests. According to the research results, participants' overall anxiety levels regarding AI were found to be high (X=4.30). In particular, concerns that AI could be misused, create mental dependency in individuals, and lead to uncontrollable outcomes form the basis of these high anxiety levels. Although male participants reported higher mean levels of AI anxiety (X = 4.40) than female participants (X = 4.19), this difference was not statistically significant (p=.264). However, significant differences emerged with respect to proficiency level and AI-use status. A2-level learners exhibited higher levels of anxiety, while individuals actively using AI tools demonstrated lower levels of anxiety. According to the results, it can be argued that the anxiety of individuals learning Turkish as a foreign language towards AI has a complex and multidimensional structure. The findings reveal that this anxiety is shaped not only by demographic factors such as technological competence or academic background, but also by individuals' relationship with technology, their level of experience, and their perceptual evaluations.

The mediating role of optimism between reading habits and meaningful living

Guven, Ahmet Zeki; Banaz, Emrullah; Özbilen, Uğur; Şahin, Tuğrul Gökmen

The present study sought to examine the relations between reading habits, perceived meaningful living, and optimism through structural equation modeling. To this end, we recruited undergraduate students enrolled in the Turkish language teaching program of a state university and collected the data using the Reading Attitude and Habits Scale, the Meaningful Living Scale and the Optimism-Pessimism Questionnaire. More than half (58.4%) of students were females, 52% were aged 21–30 years, and 34.2% were second-year students. The data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and SPSS AMOS 20.0. The findings showed a significant relationship between reading habits and meaningful living, with optimism serving as a significant mediator. Model fit indices confirmed the validity of the SEM model (RMSEA = 0.061, CFI = 0.94, TLI = 0.96). We also found that optimism served as a significant mediator in the relation between reading habits and perceived meaningful living. The findings suggest encouraging undergraduate students’ reading habits and designing and offering counseling services to foster students’ optimism and perceived meaningful living. Moreover, further research with diverse demographic groups is needed to elucidate more on the subject.

Cognitive bridges from digital reading to writing: Investigating the mediating role of reading disposition

    Banaz, Emrullah

This correlational study explores how digital reading disposition functions as a cognitive bridge between pre-service teachers' digital reading self-efficacy and their attitude with digital writing practices. The data were collected from 410 conveniently selected pre-service teachers using the Digital Reading Self-Efficacy Scale, the Digital Reading Disposition Scale, and the Digital Writing Attitude Scale. The results revealed moderate to strong correlations between digital reading self-efficacy, digital reading disposition, and digital writing attitudes. Moreover, digital reading disposition was found to mediate the relation between digital reading self-efficacy and digital writing attitudes. Overall, our findings underscore the significance of digital reading disposition in shaping both the potential of digital reading self-efficacy and the processes involved in digital writing among pre-service teachers. Pedagogical strategies that enhance digital reading self-efficacy and motivation to attitude with digital texts may contribute to the development of more effective digital writing skills among pre-service teachers.

From screens to minds: the mediating role of psychological well-being between digital reading and AI anxiety

Özbilen, Uğur; Banaz, Emrullah; Şahin, Tuğrul Gökmen

Introduction: This study investigates the mediating role of psychological well-being in the relationship between digital reading disposition and artificial intelligence (AI) anxiety among Turkish teachers. Addressing the growing concern of technology-related anxiety in education, the research explores how digital literacy and psychological resilience interact within a single structural model. Methods: A correlational research design was employed with data collected from 324 teachers. Participants completed the Digital Reading Disposition Scale, the Psychological Well-Being Scale, and the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale. Bootstrapped structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the measurement model and the hypothesized mediation effect. Prior to SEM analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to establish construct validity of the scales. Results: Findings revealed that digital reading disposition was positively associated with psychological well-being and negatively linked with AI anxiety. Psychological well-being was also negatively related to AI anxiety. Moreover, psychological well-being partially mediated the relationship between digital reading disposition and AI anxiety. Discussion: The results suggest that teachers with stronger digital reading dispositions experience higher psychological well-being, which in turn buffers against AI-related anxiety. These findings contribute novel theoretical insights to educational literature by integrating digital reading, psychological well-being, and AI anxiety into a single model. Practically, the study underscores the importance of fostering digital literacy and psychological resilience to mitigate technology-related anxiety in educational settings.

Digital Writing in Foreign Language Teaching: Learner Views

Güven, Ahmet Zeki; Yilmaz Karaca, Meryem; Banaz, Emrullah

The present study explores Turkish learners' approaches toward digital writing and how digital writing contributes to their language learning. For this purpose, we recruited 21 international students from 16 countries, 10 males and 11 females, who attended B2C1 -level Turkish language classes at the Akdeniz University Turkish Language Teaching Center in the 2021-2022 academic year. We recorded and transcribed the data collected through face-to-face interviews with a semi -structured interview form consisting of 6 questions. The data were then coded to generate themes, and the findings were grounded on the interpretation of these themes. Accordingly, the results uncovered that all participants engage in digital writing and mostly utilize WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube, and Twitter as digital writing platforms. Moreover, they were found to usually mind proper spelling and punctuation and tend to use the T9 typing system in digital writing in Turkish. We also discovered that participants find auto -correction useful and sometimes misspell vowels, consonants, and longer words/consecutive suffixes due to differences between spoken and written languages. They particularly thought that digital writing contribute to their learning of Turkish. Overall, we comprehensively discussed the findings and raised some recommendations for future research.
