Cornus mas L. (cornelian cherry) is a species widely used from traditional consumption to modern industrial applications due to its high nutritional content, richness in phenolic compounds, and functional food potential. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the physicochemical properties, organic acid composition, and free amino acid profiles of 15 cornelian cherry genotypes selected from the Çoruh Valley, one of Turkey's important biodiversity centers. Fruit samples were collected at full physiological maturity, and TSS, titratable acidity, pH, sugar composition, ascorbic acid, and tannin contents were analyzed using standard methods.Organic acids were determined by HPLC-UV, and free amino acids were determined by HPLC with OPA/FMOC derivatization. All measured traits differed significantly among genotypes (p < 0.05). Malic acid ranged from 38.12 to 251.34 mg/100 g, and total organic acids from 588.89 to 1038.15 mg/100 g. Free amino acid contents ranged from 71.34 to 93.14 mg/100 g, with the highest values in the G7 and G5 genotypes. This study demonstrates that the Çoruh Valley is an important hotspot of genetic diversity for cornelian cherry and contains genotype groups suitable for different uses. Overall, the findings provide a biochemical basis for selecting genotypes for breeding, nutritional applications, and industrial processing.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are known as environmentally-friendly solvents that have emerged as an alternative to conventional organic solvents in recent years. In this study, the effects of ten different DESs on the extraction of bioactive components from the Hypericum perforatum were investigated. Total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, phenolic profile (32 phenolics), organic acid profile (52 organic acids), as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of H. perforatum extracts prepared using DESs and ultrasonic-assisted extraction method were determined. Total phenolic, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activities of extracts were determined between 3.10 ± 0.86–16.64 ± 2.09 mg GA/g, 0.02 ± 0.00–12.29 ± 0.30 mg QE/g, and 8.40 ± 0.50–44.78 ± 2.66 mg TE/g, respectively. DES2 (choline chloride:ethylene glycol) and DES7 (choline chloride:lactic acid) demonstrated higher extraction success than other DESs for extracting phenolics and organic acids, respectively. DESs prepared using organic acid as hydrogen bond donor were found to have an antibacterial effect against all bacterial samples. However, the inhibitory effect against yeast-like fungi was observed in a narrower spectrum. Moreover, the results from principal component analysis also confirmed that the type of solvent used for extraction has a significant influence on the phenolics, organic acid, and other parameters. As a result, it was seen that DES components directly affect the extraction efficiency of target compounds from H. perforatum. This is a first and original report about use of DESs in extracting different bioactive components from H. perforatum.

Dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a widely grown and important food legume which is a major source of mineral nutrition. The present study digs in determining differences in nutrients, organic-amino acid and hormone concentrations of Ispir bean genotypes under different land use conditions. The study sites (32 locations) were identified according to the stratified sampling method in the Ispir district, Erzurum, Turkey, under consideration of bean-cultivated lands and the number of villages. The seed weights were higher for genotype no. 4 (137.5 g) than for genotype no. 14 (131.5 g) and following by all other genotypes. Moreover, values for crude protein content were significantly higher for genotype no. 14 (263.1 g/kg) in comparison to genotype no. 4 (256.9 g/kg) and other genotypes. Therefore, it is concluded that land use impacts seed weight, nutrient, crude protein, amino acid, organic acid and hormone contents of Ispir dry bean. Land use can result economic improvements in crop yields and yield components. Dry bean seed weights were impacted by other crop yield components such as amino acid, organic acid and hormone contents of dry bean.
