Investigation of endocrine and cerebral response and nutrition and physical performance parameters according to bigorexia nervosa levels: a cross-sectional study in sports sciences faculty students

Erkılıç, Ali Ozan; Bayraktar, Bülent; Erkiliç, Tuğçe Orkun; Türkmen, Mutlu; Kul, Murat; Yönal, Mehmet

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Bigorexia nervosa (BGN) levels on endocrine (Asprosin, GLP-1) and cerebral (BDNF) responses and nutritional and physical (6MWT, Six-Minute Walk Test)), speed, metabolic equivalent unit (MET)) performance parameters in students of the faculty of sports sciences. This study investigated muscle dysmorphic disorder (MDD), physical activity levels, and specific hormonal markers in 120 university students (63 females, 57 males) aged 18–25 years, all studying sport sciences and reporting no existing health problems. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire, food frequency questionnaire and the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder (Bigorexia) Inventory through face-to-face interviews. Physical activity was assessed using the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) to measure walking distance, and Metabolic Equivalent (MET) was calculated based on the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) formula. Body Mass Index (BMI) was determined from anthropometric measurements of height and body weight. Saliva samples were collected to analyze Asprosin, BDNF, and GLP-1 hormone levels using the ELISA technique.Data were analyzed using number, percentage, mean, chi-square, t-test, Pearson correlation, and ANOVA tests. In all analyses, significance was accepted as p < 0.05. According to the demographic findings of the study, the majority of participants (64.2%) were third-year students, and 52.5% were female. The mean age of the participants was 22.01 years, the mean height was 168.59 cm, and the mean weight was 62.61 kg. 73.3% of the individuals were classified as normal weight, 12.5% as pre-obese, 11.7% as underweight, and 2.5% as obese. Men had significantly higher bigorexia and its subscale scores than women (p < 0.05), and bigorexia was positively correlated with height and negatively correlated with BMI (p < 0.01). Mean salivary BDNF levels were higher in participants consuming 1–2 meals per day (p = 0.035), and mean salivary asprosin levels were significantly higher in the obese group compared to the healthy group (p = 0.008). Additionally, a strong positive correlation was found between asprosin and GLP1 levels (r = 0.585; p < 0.01). Bigorexia status was significantly associated with meat, meat products, and fat consumption (p < 0.05), while no association was found with physical performance parameters such as 6MWT, speed, and MET (p > 0.05). The average MET value was found to be 4.53, indicating that participants generally engaged in moderate-intensity physical activity. In conclusion, examining endocrine (asprosin, GLP-1) and cerebral (BDNF) hormone responses, as well as nutritional and physical performance parameters, according to BGN levels reveals the impact of BGN on physiological and nutritional behaviors. Given the impact of BGN trends on students’ health, examining hormone profiles and their relationships with physical performance and nutrition is believed to significantly contribute to understanding the health problems associated with BGN and developing appropriate interventions.

BIOCHEMICAL AND BIOACTIVE CONTENT IN FRUITS OF WALNUT (JUGLANS REGIA L.) GENOTYPES FROM TURKEY

Walnuts (Juglans regia L.) are a good source of dietary minerals and contain significant amounts of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and iron. In Turkey, walnut orchards are found in the coruh Valley and are generally composed of local varieties. Since chemical and physical properties of walnuts are very important in determining their quality, in this study, nut and kernel characteristics, fatty acid composition and phenolic composition were determined for 26 walnut genotypes collected from the valley. Total fat content was found to be between 53.75% and 71.43%, while the crude protein amount ranged from 10.21% to 20.71%. Total carbohydrates were calculated between 14.31-27.52% and ash content was found to be between 1.64% and 3.32%. The oleic acid content and linoleic acid content ranged from 18.34 to 25.58% and 37.09% to 87.51%, respectively. The linolenic acid content was determined between 5.52% and 11.03%. Our study showed that, differences in phenolic component, crude protein and fatty acid content of walnuts were caused by different growing conditions. Genotypes have a rich and stable structure in terms of fruit quality parameters, minerals, organic acids, phenolic composition, antioxidant and fatty acids amounts and amino acids. In other words, these characteristics did not show much variation in genotypes grown in the Valley. However, there was a great variation in hormone levels among genotypes. In terms of the parameters examined, GN2, GNI, ((NIS, GN24, GN25 and GN26 genotypes were determined as rich and stable genotypes.

Investigation of the relationship of apelin hormone response with some physiological parameters in Maedi-Visna infected sheep

    Bayraktar, B.; Sait, A.; Takma, Ç.; Tekce, E.

In this study, the objective was to assess the serological characteristics of sheep, during lactation and pregnancy periods, and rams belonging to the Red Karaman and White Karaman-Kangal race infected with maedi-vis-na infection and body condition score (BCS) of ≤2, 3- 3.5 and ≥4 (high) and to analyse the relationship between the level of apelin and its secretion. Apelin level in the blood serum samples obtained from the jugular veinof the sheeps was determined using ELISA method. As a result of the analyses, it was determined that the level of apelin was statistically different between the races; between lactating sheep and pregnant sheep; and sheep and rams. There was no difference between the BCS groups (p > 0.05). Race and sex interaction as well as race, sex and BCS triple interaction effects were found significant (p < 0.05). It was observed that the sheep belonging to the White Karaman-Kangal race were 18 times more likely to be infected with the virus. A decrease in apelin level was observed in the sheep with infection, and it was found that the risk of infection was 0.37 times higher in rams than in lactating sheep (p < 0.05).

DIFFERENT LAND USE INFLUENCES ON AMINO ACID, ORGANIC ACID, HORMONE AND MINERAL NUTRIENT CONTENTS OF DRY BEANS

Erdogan, Ummugulsum; Kitir, Nurgul; Günes, Adem; Tuan, Metin; Tasci, Sinem; Yildirim, Ertan; Karaman, Mehmet Rustu; Mokhtari, Negar Ebrahim Pour; Ozlu, Ekrem; Firildak, Gulay

Dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a widely grown and important food legume which is a major source of mineral nutrition. The present study digs in determining differences in nutrients, organic-amino acid and hormone concentrations of Ispir bean genotypes under different land use conditions. The study sites (32 locations) were identified according to the stratified sampling method in the Ispir district, Erzurum, Turkey, under consideration of bean-cultivated lands and the number of villages. The seed weights were higher for genotype no. 4 (137.5 g) than for genotype no. 14 (131.5 g) and following by all other genotypes. Moreover, values for crude protein content were significantly higher for genotype no. 14 (263.1 g/kg) in comparison to genotype no. 4 (256.9 g/kg) and other genotypes. Therefore, it is concluded that land use impacts seed weight, nutrient, crude protein, amino acid, organic acid and hormone contents of Ispir dry bean. Land use can result economic improvements in crop yields and yield components. Dry bean seed weights were impacted by other crop yield components such as amino acid, organic acid and hormone contents of dry bean.
