The effects on performance, combustion and emission characteristics of DICI engine fuelled with TiO2 nanoparticles addition in diesel/biodiesel/n-butanol blends

    Örs, I.; Sarıkoç, S.; Atabani, A.E.; Ünalan, S.; Akansu, S.O.

In this study, waste cooking oil biodiesel was mixed with titanium dioxide (TiO2), a metal-based nano particle, and n-butanol (C4H9OH) along with euro diesel to examine their effects on diesel engines. Various ratio of fuel blends were prepared with TiO2 nano particles-diesel-biodiesel and n-butanol. The tests fuels were euro diesel (D100), biodiesel (B100), B20, B20 + TiO2, B20But10 and B20But10 + TiO2, respectively. Thermo-physical properties such as density, pour point, cloud point, cold filter clogging point, flash point and kinematic viscosity of all test fuels were determined followed by investigating engine performance parameters such as torque, power, fuel consumption and etc. Combustion analysis was also investigated. In addition, the effects on emissions such as CO, CO2, HC, NO and smoke opacity were also carried out. The addition of n-butanol to the fuel blends substantially affected density, kinematic viscosity and cold flow properties, while the addition of TiO2 has not much effect on these properties. For all tested fuels, the maximum brake engine torque and power were recorded at approximately 1400 rpm and 2800 rpm, respectively. The addition of TiO2 increased the brake engine torque and power 10.20% and 9.74% and decreased the brake specific fuel consumption 27.73% and 28.37%, respectively compared to blends without TiO2 additive. TiO2 additive increases the maximum cylinder pressure and heat release rate, as a result improved the engine performance and combustion. The addition of n-butanol in the fuel blend increased the maximum cylinder pressure and heat release rate values in comparison to euro diesel. The results of exhaust emission showed a decrease in CO, HC and smoke opacity emissions, whereas increased CO2 and NO emission, except the use of n-butanol reduced the values of NO emission, in comparison to euro diesel and without TiO2 additive. The results show that biodiesel produced from waste cooking oil, n-butanol and TiO2 additive can be used in diesel engines at certain proportion and that the additive materials improve the combustion characteristics, engine performance and exhaust gas emission.

Energy and exergy analysis of a solid-oxide fuel cell power generation system for an aerial vehicle (ISSA- 2015–139)

    Genç, Gamze; Sarikoç, Selçuk

This paper presents the performance of the solid-oxide fuel cell/gas turbine hybrid power generation system with heat recovery waste unit based on the energy and exergy analyses. The effect of air inlet temperature and air/fuel ratio on exergy destruction and network output is determined. For the numerical calculations, air inlet temperature and air fuel ratio are increased from 273 to 373 K and from 40 to 60, respectively. The results of the numerical calculations bring out that total exergy destruction quantity increases with the increase of air inlet temperature and air/fuel ratio. Furthermore, the maximum system overall first and second law efficiencies are obtained in the cases of air inlet temperature and air/fuel ratio equal to 273 K and 60, respectively, and these values are 62.09% and 54.91%.

Green roofs and facades: A comprehensive review

    Besir, Ahmet B.; Cuce, Erdem

Based on United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), building sector accounts for 40% of total energy consumption. In European countries, 36% of total greenhouse gas emissions is attributed to buildings. In this respect, green roofs are considered to be one of the most appropriate sustainable solutions to resolve the urban heat island-related issues. Roofs account for nearly 20–25% of overall urban surface areas. Energy saving, thermal insulation, shading and evapotranspiration features highlight the key role of green roofs in overall thermal performance of buildings and microclimatic conditions of indoor environments. Within the scope of this research, the concept of green roofs and facades is comprehensively analysed in a holistic and thematic way. Following a historical overview of the technology, the research is split into various subfields such as energy saving in buildings through greenery systems, multifunctional thermal benefits including evapotranspiration, thermal insulation, shading and thermal comfort features, evaporative cooling for reducing cooling demand and minimising wind driven convection losses. The results achieved from the literature survey clearly indicate that green roofs and facades are key solutions to mitigate building-related energy consumptions and greenhouse gas emissions. According to the previous works, heat flow through the building roofs in summer can be reduced by approximately 80% via green roofs. The green roofs are reported to consume less energy in the range of 2.2–16.7% than traditional roofs during summer time. A similar tendency is observed for the winter season depending on regional and climatic conditions. The temperature difference between conventional and greens roofs in winter is found to be about 4 °C, which is remarkable. Energy demand of buildings in summer is highly dependent on the plant intensity as it is reported to be 23.6, 12.3 and 8.2 kWh/m2/year for extensive, semi-intensive and intensive greenery surface, respectively. Greenery systems are also capable of providing thermally comfortable indoor and outdoor conditions. It is underlined that the annual average accumulation of CO2 reaches the level of 13.41–97.03 kg carbon/m2 for 98 m2 of vertical greenery system. The results of this research can be useful for dwellers, builders, architects, engineers and policy makers to have a good understanding about the potential of green roofs and facades to mitigate building-related energy consumptions and carbon emissions in a renewable, sustainable, energy-efficient and cost effective way.

Uğur, Çakir; Erol, Şahin; Kemal, Çomakli; Ayşegül, Çokgez Kuş; Aloui, F; Dincer, I

Solar energy is thought as the main source of all energy sources in the world, and it can be used in many applications like agricultural areas, heating-cooling or electricity production directly or indirectly. Greenhousing is the first one of the agricultural activities that solar energy can be used directly in. Greenhouses offer us suitable conditions which can be controlled easily for the growth of the plant, and they are made by using a covering material that allows the sunlight to enter into the system. Covering material can be glass, fibre glass, plastic or another transparent element. This study investigates the solar energy usability rates and solar energy benefitting rates of a semi-spherical (modified arch)-type greenhouse system according to different orientations and positions which exist under climatic conditions of Bayburt. In the concept of this study, it is tried to determine the best direction and best sizes of a semi-spherical greenhouse to get the best solar benefit from the sun. To achieve this aim, a modelling study is made by using MATLAB. However, this modelling study is run for some determined shapes and greenhouses, and it can be used for different shaped greenhouses or buildings. The basic parameters are determined as greenhouse azimuth angle, the rate of size of long edge to short and seasonal solar energy gaining of greenhouse.

Thermoeconomic analysis and optimization of a Re-compression supercritical CO2 cycle using waste heat of Gaziantep Municipal Solid Waste Power Plant

Tozlu, Alperen; Abuşoğlu, Ayşegül; Özahi, Emrah

This paper presents thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses as well as optimization of a re-compression supercritical CO2 cycle. A gas turbine cycle (GT) is adapted as a model to an existing plant to generate additional power in Gaziantep Municipal Solid Waste Power Plant (GMSWPP). The total capital cost rate and total cost rate of the GT cycle are found to be 20.47 $/h and 77.14 $/h, respectively utilizing SPECO by using the exhaust gas of 16 kg/s with 1.9 bar and 566.7 °c. The net power, the energy and exergy efficiencies, the total cost and the total capital cost rates of the GT cycle are optimized by +1.73%, +3.21%, +2.45%, −1.11% and −1.64%, respectively using NSGA-II in MATLAB in the range of 2.5≤PR≤4, 200≤P6≤216, 16≤T0≤23 and 9.1≤LMTD≤12.9. This paper provides an originality such that optimization as well as thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses is performed simultaneously for an existing MSW power plant, which can be stressed that there are scarce amounts of studies related on this field. Moreover, as another novelty, it can be emphasized that net power output of such like plants which have similar capacity can be improved using the developed model and NSGA-II optimization method.

Exergetic Comparison of Single and Double Effect Absorption Cooling Cycles

    Karaali, Rabi

Absorption cooling cycles are environmental and can use solar or waste heat for cooling with very small electric power. This workpresents exergy analysis of a double effect parallel flow and single effect absorption cooling systems for comparison. A computerprogram is developed for the thermodynamic properties of lithium bromide-water solutions by the author in FORTRAN codes forthe exergy analysis. The double effect parallel flow absorption systems have better advantages than the single effect absorption system. The coefficient performance (COP) and the exergetic coefficient performance (ECOP) of the double effect parallel flow absorptionsystems are higher than the single cycles. For the double effect cycle COP and ECOP are found as 1.195 and 0.28, and for the singleeffect cycle COP and ECOP are found as 0.68 and 0.23, respectively. For each component the exergy loss and exergy destruction iscalculated. Most of the irreversibilities are found in the evaporator and in the absorber which about 74 % for the double effect, and 72% for the single effect of the total irreversibility. It is concluded that the performance of the evaporator and the absorber is crucial forthe two cycles. Improving and better design of these two components will directly improve and affect positively the working conditionsand the performance of the cycles.

Toward cost-effective and energy-efficient heat recovery systems in buildings: Thermal performance monitoring

    Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem

Recent studies show that it is possible to reduce heating or cooling demand of a building as using heat recovery systems. Heat recovery technology is basically utilised to mitigate the heat loss, and hence energy consumption due to HVAC. Within the scope of this study, thermal comfort analyses of a test house integrated with a novel polycarbonate heat exchanger are conducted. At pre and post-retrofit case, temperature, relative humidity and CO2 measurements are carried out for a test period of one week. The results indicate that the internal CO2 concentration is not at desirable range due to lack of ventilation in the test house at the pre-retrofit case. However, following the integration of the novel ventilation system into the test house, CO2 concentration is found to be varying notably from 350 to 400 ppm which corresponds to the actual comfort conditions for indoor environments. It is also concluded from the results that the average relative humidity inside the test house at the post-retrofit case is found to be 57%, which is in the desired range whereas it is considerably high before retrofitting.

A smart building material for low/zero carbon applications: Heat insulation solar glass-characteristic results from laboratory and in situ tests

    Cuce, Erdem; Riffat, Saffa B.

Heat insulation solar glass (HISG) is a recently developed smart building material to minimize energy consumption of building sector. HISG might be presumed to be a conventional photovoltaic glazing product; however, it is completely unique by having some characteristic features such as superior thermal insulation, which is competitive with triple-glazed windows using argon as inert gas, acoustic and thermal comfort, self-cleaning ability owing to TiO2 nano-coating on module surface and extraordinary energy saving potential in both summer and winter. In our previous works, comprehensive experimental and numerical works have been carried out for power generation and thermal insulation performance of HISG under various climatic conditions. Within the scope of this research, optical- and lighting-related performance parameters of this smart building material are evaluated through extensive laboratory and in situ tests. Shading coefficient, visible light intensity, and UV and IR penetration are investigated via the tests conducted in real operating conditions. It is achieved from the results that the shading coefficient of HISG is only 0.136, which yields almost 80% reduction in solar heat gain compared with ordinary glazing. It is also observed from the in situ tests that HISG has a %100 UV and 99% IR blocking rate, which is of vital importance in terms of human health and thermal comfort conditions. Glaring effects are totally resolved via HISG, which is still a challenge for the buildings with conventional glazing products, especially in summer.

The status of renewable electricity from hydropower in Turkey

    Serencam, Uğur

Turkey has many problems due to its increasing energy consumption and rapid economic growth. Foreign energy dependency adversely affects sustainable development of the country by hindering its economic development. Turkey has a yearly total 433 TWh hydropower capacity and 151 TWh yearly economical capacity. The electricity demand of Turkey will reach to around 420 TWh annually by 2020. Turkey had 521 operational hydropower plants with a total capacity of almost 24,000 MW in 2014. This corresponds to 34% of the total capacity. Within the first 8 months of 2015, 8 more hydropower plants came online with a capacity of around 1,240 MW. The share of hydro in power generation capacity went up by 1% during the first five months of the year reaching 35% from its previous 34% level in 2014.

Thermal performance assessment of a novel liquid desiccant-based evaporative cooling system: An experimental investigation

    Cuce, Pinar Mert

Energy consumption in buildings due to heating, cooling and air conditioning (HVAC) systems has a steadily growing trend as a consequence of enhanced indoor thermal comfort conditions. The role of cooling in HVAC oriented energy consumption is remarkable especially in regions with extreme climatic conditions such as Africa and Middle East. In hot and arid climates, cooling demand is usually met by cost-effective evaporative cooling solutions. However, in hot and humid climates, evaporative cooling systems are not capable of providing cooling as the outdoor air is already almost saturated in most cases. Therefore in this research, a novel desiccant-based evaporative cooling system is presented. For different values of inlet supply air temperature and relative humidity provided by a standard environmental chamber, temperature and relative humidity values are measured experimentally at the inlet and outlet of dehumidification and humidification unit, respectively. Since the main purpose of the system developed is to provide cost-effective thermal comfort conditions especially in humid climates, dehumidification effectiveness is calculated for each case tested. The results indicate that the system provides attractive findings for temperate and humid climatic conditions, where stand-alone evaporative cooling systems are inconclusive. For a case of average inlet relative humidity of 94.7% and average inlet air temperature of 38.6 °C, the average outlet relative humidity and air temperature are determined to be 65.5% and 33.3 °C, respectively. An average of 5.3 °C reduction is achieved in supply air temperature as well as an average of 63.7% dehumidification effectiveness which is attractive and promising.

Role of airtightness in energy loss from windows: Experimental results from in-situ tests

    Cuce, Erdem

The rate of air leakage related energy loss from glazed areas is unequivocal especially in older and poorly installed windows. Therefore, in this research, a comprehensive experimental investigation is done to analyse the importance of air leakage on overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of conventional air filled double glazed windows. The tests are conducted in a typical UK dwelling of Nottingham fitted with traditional air filled double glazed windows. One sash of the test window is sealed internally with a special transparent cover to provide excellent airtightness whereas the second window sash is left as it is to represent the ordinary case. The experiments are conducted in April 2016, and dynamic co-heating test methodology is applied to evaluate the rate of enhancement in the U-value of airtight window sash. The results indicate that the airtight window sash has a notably lower U-value compared to the ordinary window sash due to the impact of airtightness and reverse heat flux during noon time owing to the greenhouse effect between transparent cover and internal glazing. The overall U-value of ordinary window sash is found to be 2.67 W/m2K, whereas it is 1.79 W/m2K for airtight window sash. It is observed that about 33% of reduction in heat losses can be achieved via airtight windows.

Efficiency improvement of gas turbine cogeneration systems; [Poboljšanje učinkovitosti kogeneracijskih sustava plinske turbine]

    Karaali, Rabi; Öztürk, İlhan Tekin

In this study eight methods are evaluated for a gas turbine cogeneration cycle to improve the efficiency. These methods are increasing gas turbine inlet air temperature, cooling the inlet air of the compressor, air preheating, fuel preheating, increasing compressor inlet air pressure, increasing air excess rates, steam injection, and humidification of the inlet air of the compressor. These methods are studied in order to compare their effects on the performance of the systems. The effects of these methods on the exergetic efficiency depend on the kind of the cogeneration cycle. By combining recuperation, preheating fuel and steam injection methods high efficiency can be achieved. The combined methods give the best results under variable heat demands of the market. An appropriate combination of the efficiency improvement methods may increase the exergetic efficiency about 20 %. The results show that efficiency improvement methods must be applied together whenever it is possible.

An accurate model for photovoltaic (PV) modules to determine electrical characteristics and thermodynamic performance parameters

Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Karakas, Ibrahim Hakki; Bali, Tulin

Accurate and reliable modelling of photovoltaic (PV) modules is necessary for design and performance estimation of PV systems. Manufacturers of PV modules usually provide some basic electrical parameters specified at only one single operating condition, which is commonly known as standard test conditions (STCs). However, PV systems operate over a wide range of outdoor conditions, and the manufacturers’ reports do not cover sufficient information about how the PV modules react with respect to changes in the two most important environment-oriented conditions, which are solar intensity and operating cell temperature. In this respect, an accurate and reliable tool is required by designers to predict electrical characteristics and thermodynamic performance parameters of PV modules. Therefore in this research, a novel mathematical model is developed to determine solar intensity and cell temperature dependency of PV module parameters and thermodynamic efficiency figures. A simple one-diode model is proposed considering series resistance and shunt conductance. Mitsubishi PV-UJ225GA6 225 W polycrystalline silicon PV module and Kyocera KD205GH-2P 205 W multicrystal PV module are utilised for model assessment. Model results are compared with environmental chamber tests and manufacturers’ performance reports, and a very good agreement is achieved.

Thermodynamic performance assessment of different fluids in a typical organic Rankine cycle for usage in municipal solid waste power plant

    Özahi, E.; Tozlu, A.; Abuşoǧlu, A.

This paper presents the energy and exergy analyses of some different organic fluids which can be used in an organic Rankine cycle adapted to a municipal solid waste power plant in the frame of energy recovery. The novelty of the study is to adapt a well-known organic Rankine cycle system theoretically to the existing municipal solid waste power plant where the exhaust gas with a temperature of almost 560 °C is sent to atmosphere causing both energy loss and air pollution, and also violating the related legislation. The efficient organic fluid that can be used in such a plant is estimated by means of the thermodynamic analyses. It is known that, in a typical municipal solid waste power plant, a considerable amount of energy is sent up from a plant chimney to the atmosphere. This waste energy can be utilized by using an adapted organic Rankine cycle system with a proper organic fluid. In this frame, some different organic fluids were examined and compared thermodynamically in this study. The optimal operation conditions of some organic fluids, R141b, isobutane, R245fa, n-pentane and n-hexane have been evaluated by means of ASPEN and EES software programs. The effects of the outlet temperature of heat source on the energetic and exergetic efficiencies and the net power output at a given pinch point temperature difference were investigated. It can be deduced from the analyses that n-hexane has the highest energetic and exergetic efficiencies at all outlet temperatures of the heat source such as 8.92% and 34.47% at 82.08°C, respectively. It can also be stated that the maximum net power output is obtained by using the organic fluid n-hexane.

Thermoeconomic analysis and assessment of Gaziantep municipal solid waste power plant

    Tozlu, A.; Abuşoǧlu, A.; Özahi, E.

This paper presents a thermoeconomic analysis and assessment of a municipal solid waste power plant system in Gaziantep. The operation of an existing municipal solid waste power plant is described in detail and a thermoeconomical methodology based on exergoeconomic relations and specific exergy costing (SPECO) method is provided to allocate cost flows through subcomponents of the plant. SPECO method is based on a step by step procedure which begins from identification of energy and exergy values of all states defined in the present system through fuel (F) and product (P) approach and ends at the point of establishing related exergy based cost balance equations together with auxiliary equations. The actual exergy efficiency of the solid waste power plant is determined to be 47.84% which shows that 52.16% of the total exergy input to the plant is destroyed. The net electrical power output of the Gaziantep municipal solid waste power plant is 5.655 MW. The total cost rate of the power plant is evaluated as 18.44$/h as a result of thermoeconomic analyses.

Effect of XRD relative intensities of the Li (002) on surface, optical and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses of the deposited LiCoO2 thin film

Yudar, H. Hakan; Pat, Suat; Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Korkmaz, Şadan; Pat, Zerrin

In this paper, the effect of RF power on LiCoO2 thin films was investigated using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), atomic force microscopy, UV–Vis spectrophotometer, and potentiostat. The microstructural, surface, optical and electrochemical impedance measurements were performed to LiCoO2 thin films, are used to for the fully solid-state battery cathode material. According to obtained results, the relative intensities of the Li (002) crystal phase in XRD patterns of deposited LiCoO2 thin films were increased by increasing applied RF power, for the first time. The intensity of the LiCoO2 (104) plane is nearly invariant. The relative intensities of the LiCoO2 (113) plane were decreased by increasing RF power. The peak locations of the Li (002) and LiCoO2 (104) were not changed. It was found that Li (002) relative intensities affect the all investigated parameters for the LiCoO2 thin films. Especially, transmittance value increased about 20%. The band gap of the deposited film was changed 100–300 meV drastically. Deposited samples are shown high transparency in the visible region. Randles circuit was used for the equivalent circuit model. Nyquist plots, fitting parameters values and value of the circuit elements were estimated by ZSim software.

An energy prediction algorithm for wind-powered wireless sensor networks with energy harvesting

    Kosunalp, Selahattin

Energy harvesting (EH) from environmental energy sources has the potential to ensure unlimited, uncontrollable and unreliable energy for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), bringing a need to predict future energy availability for the effective utilization of the harvested energy. The majority of previous prediction approaches have exploited the diurnal cycle dividing the whole day into equal-length time slots in which predictions were carried out in each slot independently. This is not, however, efficient for wind energy as it exhibits non-controllable behaviour in that the amount of energy to be harvested varies over time. This paper proposes a novel approach to predict the wind energy for EH-WSNs depending on the energy generation profile of latest condition. The distinctive feature of the proposed approach is to consider the recent conditions in current-day, instead of past-day's energy generation profiles. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using real measurements in comparison with state-of-art approaches. Results show that the proposed strategy significantly outperforms the two popular energy predictors, EWMA and Pro-Energy.

Solar Pond Window Technology for Energy-Efficient Retrofitting of Buildings: An Experimental and Numerical Investigation

    Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert

Windows are responsible for an important proportion of heat loss from building envelope due to inadequate insulative characteristics of traditional glazing products. In this respect, advanced glazing solutions are of vital importance to mitigate energy demand of buildings, thus to reduce carbon emissions. Therefore, in this research, a novel glazing technology called solar pond window is introduced, and it is numerically and experimentally investigated for different design configurations. The optimum design of this novel glazing covers four 5-mm-thick glass panes, two 20-mm-thick water layers, and one 20-mm-thick Krypton layer in the middle. The average heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of the optimum case is found to be about 0.40 W/m 2 K. If air is used as insulative gas in the interlayer, the U-value of the glazing is determined to be around 0.90 W/m 2 K, which is still competitive with the U-value range of argon-filled triple-glazed windows with low-e coatings. The fabrication cost of the optimum design of solar pond window is around €120/m 2. Overall, solar pond window technology is a cost-effective and energy-efficient glazing, which has a great potential to be the future of fenestration products as well as being capable of meeting the latest building fabric standards.

In this study, optical and surface properties of the optically transparent Li3PO4 solid electrolyte layer for transparent solid battery have been investigated for the first time. To determine the optical properties, transmittance, absorbance, reflection, refractive index spectra, and optical band gap were determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and optical interferometer. The surface property of the transparent Li3PO4 solid electrolyte was analyzed using atomic force microscopy. One another important parameter is contact angle (CA) surface free energy (SFE). CA and SFE were determined by optical tensiometer. These values probably are a most important parameter for polymer and hybrid battery performance. For the best performance, value of CA should be low. As a result, solid electrolyte layer is a highly transparent and it has a high wettability. SCANNING 38:317–321, 2016.
