Petrochemical-based plastic packaging materials that cannot be biodegradable and remain intact in nature for many years and the continuous proliferation of these materials as waste has become an international problem. As a result of this problem, bionanocomposites produced from biodegradable materials represent a new class of nanosized materials with various uses, from various daily uses to food packaging applications. It consists of a biobased component and at least one-dimensional nanosized particles. It differs from nanocomposites with fundamental differences such as preparation methods, functions, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and obtaining methods. In the presented study, the production methods of bionanocomposites are explained with some examples obtained by these methods. Generally, there are four main production methods: in situ intercalative polymerization, solution intercalation, template synthesis, and melt intercalation. With these methods, bionanocomposites can be produced that are homogeneously dispersed and provide major enhancements in mechanical, thermal and water vapor barrier characteristics compared to base polymers. It is capital to use the appropriate method and to make the correct synthesis according to the base polymer used and the type of nanoparticle added, to obtain a homogeneous and nonagglomerated bionanocomposite synthesis.

The toxicological impacts of some heavy metals on carbonic anhydrase from gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) gills

Kaya, Elif Duygu; Söyüt, Hakan; Beydemir, Şükrü

It is known that heavy metals have toxic effects on fish. Insufficient measures are a serious problem in our country and around the world. This problem can threaten human health in areas where it is common for people to obtain nutrition from local bodies of water. In this study, the toxicological impacts of some heavy metals were investigated on carbonic anhydrase activity in gilthead gills. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) was purified from gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) gills with a specific activity of 2872.92EUmg-1 and a yield of 32.84% using affinity chromatography. The overall purification was approximately ~84-fold. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed a single band, and the MW was approximately 30.5kDa (Soyut et al., 2008, 2012; Soyut and Beydemir, 2008, 2012; Kaya et al., 2013). The kinetic and characteristic properties of CA such as the optimum pH, stable pH, optimum temperature, activation energy (Ea), activation enthalpy (δH), Q10, Km and Vmax were determined. Cadmium (Cd2+), copper (Cu2+), nickel (Ni2+) and silver (Ag+) inhibited CA activity in in vitro conditions. Ki values were calculated for these metals. Ki values were 31.20mM for cadmium (Cd2+), 161.96mM for copper (Cu2+), 10.79mM for nickel (Ni2+) and 0.0082mM for silver (Ag+) based on Lineweaver-Burk plots. Except for cadmium, heavy metals had the same inhibition mechanism. Cadmium was competitive, and the others were noncompetitive.

Investigation of transmitted, reflected, and absorbed powers of periodic and aperiodic multilayered structures composed of bi-anisotropic metamaterial slab and conventional material

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Barroso, Joaquim José; Kaya, Yunus; Karacali, Tehvit; Ertugrul, Mehmet

In this study, we investigate transmitted, reflected, and absorbed powers in forward and backward directions of periodic and aperiodic multilayered structures composed of bi-anisotropic metamaterial (MM) slab and conventional material. Aperiodic multilayered structure is realized by a change in thickness of any bi-anisotropic MM slab or of any conventional material. From this analysis, we note the following key results. First, identical (non-identical) forward and backward transmitted (reflected and absorbed) powers are observed for the analyzed periodic and aperiodic multilayered structures due to reciprocity (reflection-asymmetry) of bi-anisotropic MM slabs. Second, thickness-resonance phenomenon of conventional materials produces some peaks in the transmitted powers of periodic multilayered structures aside from the resonance frequency region of bi-anisotropic MM slabs. Third, each thickness-resonance frequency splits into many frequencies upon increasing the number of sections of periodic multilayered structures (no splitting when number of periods is one). Fourth, while the effect of changing the thickness of any bi-anisotropic MM slab within the aperiodic multilayered structure has no considerable effect around the resonance region of bi-anisotropic MM slabs (resonance of resonating structures such as MM slabs does not change with thickness), the same change in thickness of the conventional material drastically alters forward/backward reflected and absorbed powers aside from the resonance region of bi-anisotropic MM slabs (thickness-resonance totally depends on the value of thickness of conventional materials). The outcomes presented here can be particularly useful for propagation-related applications requiring cascade connection of various MM slabs.

Cinar, Mehmet; Karabacak, Mehmet; Chand, Satish; Shukla, Vikas K.; Sinha, Leena; Prasad, Onkar; Singh, Manoj Pratap; Asiri, Abdullah M.

This study aims to identify the conformational and spectroscopic characteristics of 2,4-xylyl isothiocyanate (C9H9NS) compound via experimental and computational methods. To accomplish this, density functional theory (DFT), with the B3LYP functional was used to determine ground state conformation, vibrational wavenumbers and also isotropic chemical shifts of the title molecule. Experimentally, vibrational features of the compound were evaluated by FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopic analysis in the solid phase. On the basis of these studies, the conformational and spectroscopic behaviors of 2,4-xylyl isothiocyanate were interpreted. The fundamental vibrational wavenumbers as well as their intensities were computed, and a good correlation between experimental and scaled calculated wavenumbers was observed. The polarizability, first hyperpolarizability and dipole moment values of 2,4-xylyl isothiocyanate were calculated at the same level of theory and basis set. The results show that 2,4-xylyl isothiocyanate molecule possesses nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior with non-zero values. Stability of the molecule arising from hyper-conjugative interactions and charge delocalization was analyzed using natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis.

Numerical modeling of cold powder compaction using multi particle and continuum media approaches

Güner, Faruk; Cora, Ömer Necati; Sofuoğlu, Hasan

Numerical analysis of powder compaction process requires multi-particle modeling approach as continuum models fail to simulate the nature of process (e.g. interparticle, and particle-die interactions), accurately. This study aimed for analyzing powder compaction process utilizing 3-D finite element modeling approach along with different material models including modified Cam-Clay, Mohr-Coulomb, Shima-Oyane and von-Mises. The finite element analyses were carried out by implementing multi-particle finite element method. Moreover, continuum modeling was also performed for comparison purposes. In both cases, the compaction of spherical copper particles was analyzed at room temperature conditions. The obtained FEA results were compared in terms of equivalent stress and strain, and deformed shape. Results showed that the FE models in which von-Mises and modified Cam-clay material models were used yielded results of similar magnitude while those of Shima-Oyane and Mohr-Coulomb material models resulted in equivalent stress and strain values are in close proximity. Effect of coefficient of friction on the results was also investigated by implementing three distinct coefficients of friction ( μ= 0.1, 0.25, 0.4). It was noted that increasing friction resulted in elevated level of deformation for the particles and harsher particle-particle, and particle-die contact interactions.

The effects of heat treatment on the synthesis of nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) nanoparticles using the microwave assisted combustion method

Karcioʇlu Karakaş, Zeynep; Boncukcuoʇlu, Recep; Karakaş, Ibrahim Hakki; Ertuʇrul, Mehmet

NiFe2O4nanoparticles were synthesized using the microwave assisted combustion method based on metal nitrate salts and urea. To remain of organic matters and to stabilize the particles, samples were thermally treated at various temperatures from 300-800 °C. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The heat treated samples show the reflection planes of (111), (220), (222), (311), (400), (422), (511), and (440) which perfectly confirm to a cubic spinel phase of NiFe2O4and no secondary phases were detected in the XRD patterns of the samples. The crystallite sizes calculated using the Debye-Scherrer formula were found to increase with the heat treatment temperature, from about 4 nm at 300 °C-85 nm at 800 °C. EDX results verify that the compositional mass rations were relevant, as expected from the synthesis. The micrographs of SEM and TEM showed that all of the samples have nano-crystalline behavior and particles indication cubic shape. Magnetization measurements were obtained at room temperature by using a VSM, which demonstrated that the all of the samples synthesized with heat treatment exhibited ferromagnetic behaviors.
