This study focuses on groundwater governance in Mediterranean socio-ecological systems, where anthropogenic and climate-related pressures lead to issues such as overexploitation, salinisation, and pollution, particularly in coastal areas. It provides empirical evidence of the practices and processes that foster governance learning and innovation towards adaptive and sustainable groundwater management, drawing on data from a comparative groundwater governance assessment of four case studies, each representing relevant issues within the mosaic of water challenges in the Mediterranean region. This study addresses several knowledge gaps by proposing a framework aligned with a socio-ecological systems approach, allowing for acomprehensive understanding of groundwater governance by consideringinterconnected social, economic, and environmental dimensions. The assessment process integrates diverse data and knowledge sources, and ensures the active participation of local stakeholders. The findings highlight several cross-cutting themes relevant to water governance innovation. These include transdisciplinary collaborations that recognise the multidimensionality of water governance, the role of cultural and social capital as catalysts for community mobilisation, the potential of community participation tools to promote voluntary behavioural changes, and the creation of social learning spaces to co-design scientifically robust and socially acceptable water management options. Furthermore, this study emphasises the integration of the Theory of Change to effectively engage stakeholders in the co-creation of tailored governance solutions, thereby enhancing the potential for sustainable policy outcomes.

Numerical simulation of the flow passing through the side weir-gate

    Kartal, Veysi; Emiroglu, M. Emin

A combination of a weir and a gate is called the combined weir-gate. The hydraulic behaviour of the combined side weir-gate was numerically and experimentally investigated in the study. The findings were evaluated to investigate the impact of combined flow and weir-gate geometry characteristics on the discharge capacity of the side weir-gate. Thirty-three numerical simulations were conducted. The numerical simulations were performed by applying the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method to the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations using Flow-3D using k-epsilon turbulence model. The model was validated against experimental data previously obtained by the authors, and eighty-eight experiments were conducted to analyze using different models. The findings show that the models with rectangular weir and gate cross-sections have higher discharge capacity than those with triangular and semicircular gates, and the models with semicircular gates have higher discharge capacity than those with triangular gates. The Absolute Percentage Error (APE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Scatter Index (SI) and Coefficient of Determination (R2) of the numerical and experimental results are 4.11 %, 0.30 % and 0.10 %, 0.99, respectively. The results show that experimental and numerical findings and discharge capacity are consistent.

Nanomaterial and fiber-reinforced sustainable geopolymers: A systematic critical review

    Ünal, M. T.; Gökçe, H. S.; Ayough, P.; Alnahhal, A. M.; Simsek, O.; Nehdi, M. L.

Global cement production is associated with a colossal environmental footprint due to its considerable carbon emissions, energy consumption, depletion of natural resources, and waste accumulation. Geopolymer based concretes (GCs) have emerged as revolutionary alternatives to ordinary Portland cement concrete with enormous potential ecological benefits. However, they suffer from deficiencies, such as their brittle behavior under flexural and tensile loads. Using different types of fiber reinforcement and nanomaterial additions in geopolymer composites (GCs) has recently gained considerable attention to enhance various engineering properties, improve crack resistance, toughness, and ductility of the geopolymer matrices. This systematic and critical review analyses the effects of different reinforcing fibers and nanomaterials on the compressive and tensile strengths, modulus of elasticity, and impact resistance of GCs, and highlights the associated microstructural features. It is shown that carbon, basalt, and steel fibers can impart considerable improvement in mechanical strength, modulus of elasticity, and impact resistance of GCs. Furthermore, the introduction of polyethylene fibers has been shown to induce complex cracking behaviors, thereby contributing to the strain-hardening capability of geopolymer matrices. The integration of nanomaterials into GCs has emerged as a powerful strategy for achieving substantial enhancements in mechanical performance. Optimal nanomaterial dosages, typically around 2%, have been identified, with the specific surface area of nanoparticles proving to be a crucial determinant of the resulting mechanical properties. Notably, nano-silica has exhibited pronounced macro-scale reinforcement effects, whereas nano-titanium has displayed the potential to significantly enhance gel micromechanical characteristics. Additionally, synergistic combinations of nanomaterials and fiber reinforcements have led to the development of novel and distinctive mechanical properties within GCs. The synthesis of these findings underscores current best practices, highlights areas requiring further investigation, and emphasizes the need for concerted research efforts to advance the knowledge and implementation of sustainable geopolymers. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of the effects of fiber reinforcements and nanomaterials on geopolymer composites, providing valuable insights for researchers and practitioners.

Pelletizing ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) powders with a novel tapered die and addition of high density polyethylene (HDPE): Processing, morphology, and properties

Yang, Huaguang; Yilmaz, Galip; Jiang, Jing; Xie, Jun; Langstraat, Thomas; Chu, Raymond; van Es, Martin; Garg, Priya; Turng, Lih-Sheng

The extremely high molecular weight and molecular entanglement have rendered ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) superior properties. However, poor inter-particle diffusion makes it difficult to pelletize UHMWPE powders for easy processing/handling. A novel tapered die with air cooling was proposed to pelletize UHMWPE and a UHMWPE blend with 5 wt% high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for compression molding and material characterization. The tensile strength of samples prepared with the tapered die outperformed those by the regular die or from virgin powders. The addition of HDPE further improved the tensile strength. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed little chain scission and the lowest amount of oxidation from the tapered die. Intrinsic viscosity (IV) measurements confirmed the negligible chain scission and showed an increment in IV for the UHMWPE/HDPE blend. Multi-angle light scattering with size-exclusion chromatography (SEC-MALS) indicated no change in the UHMWPE molecular weight distribution, but some crosslinking in the blend. Polarized optical microscopy (POM) showed that the HDPE and extrusion led to a finer UHMWPE domain size and better fusion between UHMWPE and HDPE. The combined effect of enhanced molecular chain diffusion, improved consolidation, and lower oxidation using the tapered die led to 40% improvement of tensile strength for the UHMWPE/HDPE blend.

A review on developments of environmentally friendly geopolymer technology

Krishna, R. S.; Mishra, Jyotirmoy; Zribi, Marwa; Adeniyi, Funmilayo; Saha, Suman; Baklouti, Samir; Shaikh, Faiz Uddin Ahmed; Gökçe, H. S.

This study aims to present an overview of the progress of geopolymer composites with regards to the latest developments on its constituents (binders, activators, and aggregates) and manufacturing techniques. Some ecological, economic, and industrial limitations of the traditional aluminosilicate binders yield to the pursuit of alternative ones over the period. Some of these latest binders e.g. ferrochrome ash, mine tailings, rice husk ash, red mud, have been highlighted in this paper. Current advances on replacement of natural fine and coarse aggregates such as mine tailings (iron ore tailings), recycled/lightweight aggregates for geopolymer preparation have been reviewed from the past literature. The paper also focuses on developments regarding the new class of green alkaline and acidic activators, which is traditionally considered to be the binding agent in the preparation of geopolymer composites. Different geopolymer production methods have been briefly discussed to study their effectiveness in achieving a strong and durable composite. This paper may serve to encourage further experimental research works for achieving more sustainable, cost-effective geopolymer composites with enhanced mechanical properties.

Coupling analysis between resonating metamaterial slabs using scattering parameters

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus; Izginli, Mucahit; Ozturk, Hamdullah; Ertugrul, Mehmet; Ramahi, Omar M.

Metamaterial (MM) slabs in close proximity can couple with one another. This coupling can modify the electromagnetic response of the overall MM structure involving individual MM resonators. The signal flow graph technique along with the ABCD parameters are applied to quantitatively and qualitatively examine this coupling from simulated/measured scattering parameters of cascade connection of closely or largely separated MM slabs. S-parameter measurements of a MM slab constructed by split-ring-resonators were carried out at X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) to validate our theoretical analysis.

Physical and mechanical properties of cement containing regional hazelnut shell ash wastes

    Baran, Y.; Gökçe, H. S.; Durmaz, M.

Turkey is ranked in the first place with two-thirds of the world hazelnut production. As the amount of shell obtained from shelled-hazelnut is almost equal to that of hazelnut by weight, the shell is a regionally important waste. The biomass is consumed as a fuel in some homes, workplaces, and public buildings with the help of specific caldrons. In the study, the use of ash was researched in the production of blended cement. For this purpose, blended cement mixtures containing hazelnut shell ash at the ratios of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% by weight of CEM I 42.5R ordinary Portland cement were prepared. The binary cementitious systems were assessed in terms of chemical, physical and mechanical properties. Hazelnut shell ash introduction increased the water demand up to 59% for standard consistency and reduced setting time up to 96% according to the ordinary Portland cement. Compressive strength results were remarkably reduced by an increase in the amount of ash. With over 5% of hazelnut shell ash introduction, the 28-d compressive strength value was found unsatisfactory (<42.5 MPa). The insufficient total amount of SiO2+Fe2O3+Al2O3 reduced the usage amount of the biomass ash in cementitious products due to having no pozzolanic characteristic. Hazelnut shell ash can be used as an alkaline set accelerator in concrete products as it is not steel-reinforced due to its high chlorine ion content. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Damages on reinforced concrete buildings due to consecutive earthquakes in Van

Ates, Sevket; Kahya, Volkan; Yurdakul, Muhammet; Adanur, Suleyman

Consecutive earthquakes occurred on October 23rd, 2011 in Ercis and on November 9th, 2011 in Edremit that are townships located 90. km and 18. km far from Van city in Turkey, respectively. A total of 28,000 buildings were damaged or collapsed in the city center and the surrounding villages after the Ercis earthquake. This number reached 35,000 after the Edremit earthquake. In the area where the earthquakes occurred, almost all the reinforced concrete buildings were affected. This study presents field observations of damages on reinforced concrete buildings due to the consecutive earthquakes that occurred in Van, Turkey. Damages appearing in the buildings may occur due to several reasons such as site effect, poor construction quality, poor concrete strength, poor detailing in beam-column joints, detailing of stronger beam than column, soft stories, weak stories, inadequate reinforcement, short lap splices, incorrect end hook angle, and short columns. Aftershocks also caused progressive damages on the buildings within 17 days after the earthquakes. According to the results of this study, most of the damaged buildings were not designed and constructed according to the Turkish earthquake code, the so-called Specification for Buildings to be built in Seismic Zones.

Şengül, Mustafa; Erkaya, Tuba; Başlar, Mehmet; Ertugay, M. Fatih

The combined effect of simultaneously applied acoustic energy and ultraviolet irradiation (UV-C), named photosonication, on the population reduction of total and coliform bacteria in raw milk was investigated. Photosonication was carried out at 100% (120 μm; 240 W) amplitude of ultrasound accompanied by UV light of 13.2 W cm-2 while sonication was carried out at 100% amplitude without UV light. An ultrasonic processor (400 W and 24 kHz with a 22 mm diameter probe) and 3 ultraviolet lamps (4400 μW cm-2 per lamp) were used. The exposure time was 15 min for all treatment, and samples were taken after 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 min. Thermal treatment (at 65 °C for 30 min) achieved a 3.29 log and 5.31 log-reduction for total and coliform bacteria, respectively. However, the reduction achieved was 4.79 log cfu mL-1 and 5.31 log cfu mL-1 for total and coliform bacteria, respectively, in photosonication while 1.31 log cfu mL-1 and 4.01 log cfu mL-1 for total and coliform bacteria, respectively in sonication. During photosonication, UV light contributed to an increase of lethality.
