Investigation of inlet air pressure and evaporative cooling of four different cogeneration cycles

    Karaali, Rabi

The objective of this study was to search the effects of the inlet air compressor pressure and evaporative cooling of four different cogeneration plants that are absorption cooling (ab), basic (bsc), air heating (airh), and air fuel heating (airfh) cogeneration systems by using the first law and the second law of thermodynamics, and the exergy analysis methods. For analysis, a program is written by the author in the FORTRAN programming language. Decreasing the atmospheric pressure or increasing the installation altitude of the plants increases the Z factor (ratio of lost exergy to useful exergy) of the four cycles about 10-13%. Also, decreasing inlet air pressure decreases the specific work about 25-28%, and the fuel energy saving ratio of the four cycles decreases about 29-30%. The method of water spray cooling of the compressor inlet air especially in the summer months, the humidity increases and the evaporative cooling can be obtained. By using this method, the ratio of lost exergy to useful exergy can be decreased for the four cycles about 0.5-2%. Also, the specific work of the four cycles can be increased about 1.2-6%.

Determination of flow distance of the fluid metal due to fluidity in ductile iron casting by artificial neural networks approach

    Teke, Çağatay

Ductile irons (DIs) have properties such as high strength, ductility, and toughness, as well as a low degree of melting, good fluidity, and good machining. Having these characteristics make them the most preferred among cast irons. The combination of excellent properties, especially in DI castings with a thin section, make it an alternative for steel casting and forging. But in the manufacture of thin-section parts, fluidity characteristics need to be improved and the liquid metal must fill the mold completely. The fluidity of liquid metal is influenced by many factors depending on the casting processes such as material and mold properties, casting temperature, inoculation, globalization, and grain refinement. In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) model has been developed that allows for determining the flow distance of the liquid metal in the sand mold casting method under changing casting conditions of DI. Thus, the flow distance was estimated depending on the cross-sectional thickness during the sand casting under changing casting conditions. The experimental parameters were determined as casting temperature, liquid metal metallurgy quality, cross-sectional thickness, and filling time. Filling modeling was performed with FlowCast software. When the results were examined, it was seen that the developed ANN model has high success in predicting the flow distances of the liquid metal under different casting conditions. The calculated coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.986 confirms the high prediction performance of the model.

Non-family Employees in Family firms and Turnover Intentions: The Relevance of Identification and Justice Perceptions

Yazici, Omer; Memili, Esra; Patel, Pankaj

Many family firms hire and rely on non-family employees; therefore, the mutual benefits provided to both family and non-family members are important. Yet, the perspectives of non-family employees have been under researched. Drawing upon organizational identity and justice theories and the extant literature on family influence, this study examines non-family employees' perceived family influence, family firm identification, family firm justice, and turnover intentions in a sample of 301 family business non-family employees. Path analysis results show that non-family employees' perceived family influence can lead to family firm identification, in turn diminishing their turnover intentions. We also find that non-family employees' perceptions of family firm justice moderate the relationship between non-family employees' perceived family influence and family firm identification. We conclude by discussing implications.

Determination of radioprotective and genotoxic properties of sulfamide derivatives

Some potential drug active substances with the ability to reduce the effects of radiation on human tissues and cells were investigated. For this purpose, eight different types of sulfamide derivatives were synthesized and nuclear radiation protection parameters were determined. Neutron radiation reduction parameters such as the half-value layer effective removal cross-sections, mean free path, and the number of particles passing through the sample were determined with GEANT4 code. Additionally, the gamma radiation attenuation parameters of the materials examined were determined using Phy-X/PSD software in the energy area of 0.015-15 MeV. These parameters are the half-value layer, mass attenuation coefficient, mean free path, exposure buildup factor and effective atomic number. Neutron radiation absorption experiments were applied using an 241Am-Be fast neutron source. All results obtained for neutron radiation were compared with paraffin and water. It has been found that the ability of sulfamide derivatives to absorb these radiations is superior to reference materials. To determine whether these derivatives could have adverse effects on human health, their genotoxic potential was determined using the Ames/Salmonella bacterial reversion test. The results showed that these derivatives can be considered genotoxically safe in tests at concentrations up to 5 mM. Thus, it is suggested that the derivative materials examined in this study can be used as active substances for a drug to be made for protection against both neutron and gamma radiation.

An application of finite element method in material selection for dental implant crowns

Sensoy, Abdullah T.; Çolak, Murat; Kaymaz, Irfan; Findik, Fehim

Materials used for dental crowns show a wide range of variety, and a dentist's choice can depend on several factors such as patient desires, esthetics, tooth factors, etc. One of the most important issues for implant surgery is the primary stability and it should be provided to minimize the risks of screw loosening, failed osseointegration, or nonunion. The current study aims to present the Finite Element Analysis (FEA)-based material selection strategy for a dental crown in terms of reducing the aforementioned risks of dental implants. A virtual surgery mandible model obtained using MIMICS software was transferred to the ANSYS and material candidates determined using CES software were compared using FEA. The results indicated that Zr02+Y2O3 (zirconia) has shown a 12.79% worse performance compared to Au83-88/Pt4-12/Pd4.5-6 alloy in terms of abutment loosening. On the other hand, zirconia is the most promising material for dental crowns in terms of the stability of the bone-implant complex. Therefore, it may show the best overall performance for clinical use. Moreover, as suggested in this study, a better outcome and more accurate predictions can be achieved using a patient-specific FEA approach for the material selection process.

Taguchi Approach for Optimization of Parameters that Effect Grain Size of Cast A357 Alloy

    Çolak, M.; Dlşplnar, D.

Grain refining and modification are common foundry practice for improving properties of cast Al-Si alloys. In general, these types of treatments provide better fluidity, decreased porosity, higher yield strength and ductility. However, in practice, there are still some discrepancies on the reproducibility of the results from grain refining and effect of the refiner's additions. Several factors include the fading effect of grain refinement and modifiers, inhomogeneous dendritic structure and non-uniform eutectic modification. In this study, standard ALCAN test was used by considering Taguchi's experimental design techniques to evaluate grain refinement and modification efficiency. The effects of five casting parameters on the grain size have been investigated for A357 casting alloy. The results showed that the addition of the grain refiner was the most effective factor on the grain size. It was found that holding time, casting temperature, alloy type and modification with Sr were less effective over grain refinement.
