Cuce, Pinar Mert; Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Erdem; Bouabidi, Abdallah; El Hadi Attia, Mohammed

This study experimentally investigates the thermal and electrical performance, economic feasibility, and environmental impacts of a hybrid energy system integrated with a parabolic trough collector (PTC) and thermoelectric generator (TEG). In the established system, solar energy is converted into electrical and thermal energy using a steam turbine and TEG. Experimental data indicate that the system operates with an average efficiency of 71.44%, which varies depending on the intensity of solar radiation. The overall energy efficiency of the system is calculated as 14.51%. In the economic analysis, the payback period of the designed system is approximately 5.4 years, while the levelised cost of energy production (LCOE) is calculated to be 0.075 USD kWh−1. The environmental assessment indicates that the system can prevent 356.18 kg of CO2 emissions annually and save approximately 1499.72 L of water. These findings demonstrate that hybrid systems offer an economically and environmentally sustainable and efficient alternative to energy production.

A novel passive cooling configuration for photovoltaic panels based on bio-inspired heatsinks and nanoparticle-enhanced PCM

Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Guclu, Tamer

This study presents the design, fabrication, and experimental evaluation of a novel passive thermal management system for photovoltaic (PV) modules that integrates a bio-inspired aluminium heatsink with a nanoparticle-doped phase change material (PCM). The proposed configuration aims to regulate the temperature of the PV module under real outdoor conditions without any external energy input. The bio-inspired heatsink was designed based on coral-like branching geometry to enhance natural convection and heat distribution within the PCM. The PCM, doped with metal-oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2) at a 2% mass fraction, provided additional latent-heat storage capacity and improved thermal conductivity. Experimental tests were conducted using two identical monocrystalline PV panels. The results demonstrated that the bio-inspired-cooled PV module effectively reduced surface temperature fluctuations by 8–15 °C and achieved a maximum efficiency improvement of 9.2% compared to the uncooled configuration. The integration of the PCM layer with the bio-inspired heatsink maintained a more stable operating temperature throughout the day, particularly during high-irradiance conditions. Hourly I-V and P-V analyses confirmed that the hybrid module consistently exhibited higher maximum power and efficiency values. Furthermore, the estimated energy yield analysis revealed that the average efficiency gain of 5.6% achieved under outdoor conditions could lead to a substantial increase in annual energy production. Overall, the hybrid bio-inspired fins + PCM system offers a sustainable, self-regulating, and energy-free cooling solution that enhances both the performance and durability of PV modules.

Bio-inspired passive cooling of photovoltaic modules using Sphagnum palustre moss: An experimental study

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Abay, Gökhan; Cuce, Erdem; Guclu, Tamer; Alvur, Emre

This study investigates the potential of Sphagnum palustre moss as a completely natural, passive evaporative cooling medium for photovoltaic (PV) modules. Unlike synthetic hydrogels or complex biomimetic structures, the proposed system utilises the innate porous structure and high water-retention capacity (up to 20 times its dry weight) of natural moss to facilitate rapid heat dissipation. Experimental evaluations conducted under effective solar irradiances of 510.4–820.9 W/m2 demonstrate that the moss-cooled configuration achieves a remarkable temperature reduction of 27.4–39.8 °C compared to uncooled standalone panels. These thermal improvements translate into relative power gains of 6.10% to 11.66% and an exceptional evaporative cooling power of up to 598 W/m2. The results establish Sphagnum palustre as a highly effective, biodegradable, and low-cost alternative for PV thermal management, offering performance competitive with advanced engineered cooling materials whilst ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.

Experimental 4E analysis (energy-exergy-economic-environmental) of hybrid parabolic trough collector-thermoelectric generator-phase change material cogeneration system

Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem

Hybrid solar cogeneration systems are critical for enhancing energy utilisation and mitigating the intermittency of solar resources. This study presents a comprehensive 4E (Energy-Exergy-Economic-Environmental) experimental analysis of a novel hybrid system that uniquely integrates a Parabolic Trough Collector (PTC), a small-scale steam turbine, a Thermoelectric Generator (TEG) assembly, and a Phase Change Material (PCM) thermal storage unit. The system's performance was investigated under 15 distinct operating conditions, varying initial water masses (0.1, 0.15, 0.2 kg) and operating pressures (6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 bar). Experimental results demonstrated the system's adaptive cogeneration capabilities. At 14 bar and 0.2 kg, the system achieved its maximum Solar-to-Electricity efficiency of 0.42%. At this operating condition, the highest collector thermal efficiency was 25.25% (at 6 bar), and the maximum overall energy and exergy efficiencies were 8.43% and 1.45%, respectively. A key finding was the system's adaptive electrical output: at low pressures (6 bar), the TEG acted as a crucial co-generator, supplying up to 55% of the electricity, whereas at high pressures (14 bar), the turbine dominated, accounting for 88-90% of the output. Furthermore, the study experimentally confirmed that latent heat transfer was the dominant heat transfer mechanism for the PCM, with latent heat contributing ∼445 kJ (55%) of the 805 kJ total energy stored. The thermo-economic analysis confirmed the system's viability, yielding a Simple Payback Period (Spp) of 6.9 years and a competitive Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) of $0.101/kWh. The system is projected to save 118.8 kg of CO2 and 660 L of water annually. The results validate the thermodynamic and economic feasibility of the integrated PTC-Turbine-TEG-PCM concept as a flexible solution for small-scale solar cogeneration.

Life cycle cost and carbon footprint analysis of CuO–Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluids in thermoelectric vaccine refrigerators

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Erdem

This study investigates the application of a CuO–Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid as a coolant in thermoelectric vaccine refrigerators, aiming to enhance heat dissipation from the Peltier module’s hot side. A 35-L cooling cabinet was utilised, and experimental comparisons were made using water and a 2% CuO–Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid. Results show that the vaccine cabinet reaches the target temperature of 4 °C in 990 s with nanofluid, compared to 1200 s with water. The system’s energy consumption was reduced by 18.3%, and carbon emissions decreased by 12.3% over a 15-year lifespan, highlighting its environmental benefits. Despite similar coefficients of performance (COP), the nanofluid system demonstrates enhanced efficiency, shorter cooling times, and long-term sustainability advantages. These findings support the adoption of hybrid nanofluids in thermoelectric cooling applications for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly refrigeration systems.

    Smart and Sustainable Energy Systems

Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem

Today, fossil fuels still have a more important share in energy production. Reducing the share of these resources in energy production is an extremely important issue in order to prevent the environmental effects caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Especially in the last ten years, the transformation into smart and sustainable energy systems has accelerated in order to use energy resources efficiently and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Smart energy systems are systems that allow the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal instead of a fossil fuel-based large production system. Thanks to these systems, instead of a single large power generation facility, energies produced from renewable sources close to the area of use can be integrated into the system, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, smart energy systems are effective in reducing energy costs, as they make final consumers a part of energy production. In addition, since smart energy systems allow the integration of sectors such as electricity, heating, energy, transportation, and transmission, they provide a sustainable, accessible, economical, clean, and efficient energy supply. In this study, information about smart and sustainable energy systems has been given, advantages and difficulties have been mentioned, and also an economic evaluation has been made.

Design, modelling, environmental, economic and performance analysis of parabolic trough solar collector (PTC) based cogeneration systems assisted by thermoelectric generators (TEGs)

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Erdem

Concentrating solar power systems (CSP) is a very efficient technology for clean and renewable energy production. It basically works on the principle of focusing the sun's rays with the help of a reflective surface. There are two types of CSP systems: point-focused and line-focused. Point-focused ones are parabolic dish collectors and solar towers. Line-focused ones are parabolic trough collectors (PTCs) and linear Fresnel reflectors. It is possible to reach focus temperatures over 1000 °C with point-focused CSPs. Line-focused CSP systems are used to obtain thermal and electrical energy at temperatures below 500 °C. Among CSP technologies, PTCs are widely preferred. While it can be used alone, it can also be used in combination with other power generation systems by creating hybrid systems. In this regard, hybrid PTC/TEG energy systems created with thermoelectric generators (TEGs) come to the fore. These systems have higher electrical and thermal efficiency values compared to traditional PTCs. In this study, CSP systems, PTCs, TEGs and hybrid solar energy systems-based PTCs were examined in detail. It is concluded from the study that the total thermal efficiency of PTC-TEG hybrid systems can be enhanced by up to %70 with respect to PTC systems.

Thermal and energy analysis of a novel solar updraft tower design with divergent chimney and convergent collector concept: CFD analysis with experimental validation

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Saxena, Abhishek; Cuce, Erdem; Kontoleon, Karolos J.; Oztekin, Erman K.; Shaik, Saboor; Guo, Shaopeng

The fact that energy sources are heavily dependent on fossil fuels increases the need for alternative energy day by day. Solar energy is the most popular alternative energy source with massive potential. Solar chimney power plants (SCPP) are one of the systems of interest based on solar energy. SCPP systems are rare systems that can provide 24-hour power output. Their performance has been the subject of constant research since the first pilot plant in Manzanares. Design is crucial for performance figures of SCPPs, and the limitation of climatic parameters causes the system to be approached with different designs. This study makes a 3D CFD model by combining the divergent chimney and convergent collector structure based on the first pilot plant. The solar ray tracing algorithm and the RNG k-e turbulence model are applied and the model equations are solved under dynamic conditions with the reliable software ANSYS FLUENT. After the mesh-independent solution of the model is complete, it is validated with experimental data. The two cases are compared for solar radiation of 1000 W/m2 and environmental temperature of 293 K. A power output of 50.51 kW is achieved for standard pilot sizing. With the new model, the power output rises to 146.34 kW. It is seen that the divergent chimney and convergent collector affect the airflow in the system, increasing the maximum air velocity to 19.363 m/s. In parallel with the experimental data, it is seen that the temperature on the ground exceeds 360 K in the CFD results.

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem; Guclu, Tamer

Petrochemical-based plastic packaging materials that cannot be biodegradable and remain intact in nature for many years and the continuous proliferation of these materials as waste has become an international problem. As a result of this problem, bionanocomposites produced from biodegradable materials represent a new class of nanosized materials with various uses, from various daily uses to food packaging applications. It consists of a biobased component and at least one-dimensional nanosized particles. It differs from nanocomposites with fundamental differences such as preparation methods, functions, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and obtaining methods. In the presented study, the production methods of bionanocomposites are explained with some examples obtained by these methods. Generally, there are four main production methods: in situ intercalative polymerization, solution intercalation, template synthesis, and melt intercalation. With these methods, bionanocomposites can be produced that are homogeneously dispersed and provide major enhancements in mechanical, thermal and water vapor barrier characteristics compared to base polymers. It is capital to use the appropriate method and to make the correct synthesis according to the base polymer used and the type of nanoparticle added, to obtain a homogeneous and nonagglomerated bionanocomposite synthesis.

Effect of using hybrid nanofluids as a coolant on the thermal performance of portable thermoelectric refrigerators

Mert Cuce, Pinar; Cuce, Erdem; Guclu, Tamer; Shaik, Saboor; Alshahrani, Saad; Ahamed Saleel, C.

This study investigated the effect of using hybrid nanofluids as a refrigerant in portable thermoelectric refrigerator applications on thermal performance. For this purpose, a cooling cabinet with an internal volume of 36 L was designed and produced. Then, the Peltier assembly, with a water-cooled block attached to its hot surface, was placed in this cooling cabinet from the middle of its front cover. With the help of a refrigerant, the heat was removed from the Peltier's hot surface and transferred to the atmosphere via a water-to-air heat exchanger. Hybrid nanofluids prepared with Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 and nanoparticles and water were used as the refrigerant in the system. To evaluate the thermal performances of these hybrid nanofluids, the tests were repeated using water without added nanoparticles as the reference case. According to the results obtained from the experimental study, it was observed that in all cases, tests using nanofluids gave better results than the reference cases. In addition, it was determined that the efficiency obtained from the system increased as the nanoparticle ratio in the mixture increased in all cases. Despite significant improvements in cooling cabinet and cooled product temperatures in hybrid nanofluids, the COP values of the systems are slightly lower than in the reference case due to the Peltier effect. Considering the difference between the first and last temperatures of the cooled cabinet, the greatest improvement compared to the reference situation was determined as 30.3 % in the case of loaded state conditions and in the case of using 2 % Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2-Water nanofluid. For the unloaded conditions, this value was obtained as 25.1 % in the case of using 2 % Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2-Water nanofluid. On the other hand, for the unloaded condition, the lowest COP value was calculated as 0.47 and 0.45 when Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2-Water nanofluid was used in 1 % and 2 % mass fraction, respectively. For the loaded condition, this value was found as 0.48 in the case where 1 % Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2-Water and 0.47 in the case where 2 % Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2-Water nanofluid was used.

Heat transfer enhancement in cylindrical fins through longitudinal parabolic perforations

Cuce, Erdem; Oztekin, Erman Kadir; Cuce, Pinar Mert

In our previous works, it is clearly addressed that optimisation of fin profile is of vital importance in terms of the rate of heat transfer from a hot surface, and the optimisation procedure depends on several factors. Within the scope of this research, a longitudinal cylindrical fin profile is under interest for the optimisation research. The purpose is to investigate the effects of longitudinal parabolic perforations on the fin parameters such as temperature distribution, effectiveness and efficiency, in which the fin surface is cooled by natural convection and radiation. Different concavity levels are considered to form parabolic perforations. The rate of heat transfer from fin surface is numerically correlated with the fin mass with respect to different concavity levels. According to results, heat transfer from unit fin mass is enhanced with the new designs. The outcome of the study can be used to optimise the needs for particular applications by making a decision between heat loss and weight options. That is, the increase in the concavity level of the perforation results in a lighter and cheaper design, but yielding a lower heat loss. However, heat transfer from unit mass is still enhanced.

Thermoelectric Coolers (TECs): From Theory to Practice

    Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Erdem

Thermoelectric coolers (TECs) are solid state units, which provide reliable energy conversion with no noise or vibration. They are also lightweight and do not include any moving parts. The current coefficient of performance (COP) range of TECs has shown a trend of improvement, and TECs have a wide range of usage areas. Within the scope of this research, TECs are comprehensively evaluated in terms of several aspects such as type, material, design, modelling, thermal performance, potential applications, economic and environmental issues. It can be achieved through the results that the COP of TECs is highly dependent on the temperature difference between hot and cold side (ΔT), and maximum COP is obtained when ΔT is close to zero. It is also observed that COP can be enhanced by more than 55% when the hot side is thermally regulated by phase change materials (PCMs) or integrated with a water cooling unit.

Strategies for ideal indoor environments towards low/zero carbon buildings through a biomimetic approach

Cuce, Erdem; Nachan, Zaid; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Sher, Farooq; Neighbour, Gareth B.

Biomimicry is a relatively new discipline of applied science that seeks inspiration from natural systems for innovative solutions to human problems. Taking nature as ‘model, mentor and measure’ receives wide acceptance in the field of architecture but predominantly in conceptualising novel forms. The biomimicry concept is comprehensively analysed for its ability to provide more sustainable and possibly even regenerative built environments. As part of this study, first, various frameworks for approaching ‘biomimicry’ in general are discussed and then relevant examples pertaining to architecture are evaluated. Case studies are critiqued with respect to varied levels of sustainability achieved and its causative factors. In the second part, an approach model for ‘biomimetic architecture’ in the context of Mumbai is presented and applicable strategies based on climatic adaptation are suggested using local biodiversity as a library of organisms. The generic example of ‘human skin’ addressing the same adaptation is analysed and complemented by a state-of-the-art case study on similar lines. The results achieved clearly reveal that biomimicry is a successful approach to design and operate the sustainable built environments for the buildings of the future.

Accurate and reliable U-value assessment of argon-filled double glazed windows: A numerical and experimental investigation

    Cuce, Erdem

U-value assessment is a significant process to be able to evaluate the thermal insulation performance of building materials notably windows. About 60% of energy losses from building envelope is attributed to windows, hence accurate and reliable thermal resistance evaluation of glazed areas is of vital importance for a sensitive energy demand analysis of buildings. U-value assessment of windows is usually conducted through theoretical and numerical methods in literature. However, dwellers frequently complain about the insufficient thermal insulation performance of commercial glazing products when compared to the reported U-values in datasheets. This inconvenience arises from the lack of comprehensive experimental tests which simulate the actual operating conditions. Therefore, in this research, argon filled double glazed windows, which is one the most common fenestration products in market, is numerically and experimentally analysed in terms of U-value performance. Although computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses reveal that the U-value of the reference sample (4 mm pane + 20 mm argon + 4 mm pane) is 0.89 W/m(2)K, which is in good accordance with the theoretical data (0.80 W/m(2)K), it is observed from the environmental chamber tests that the U-value in simulated operating conditions is 1.25, 1.18 and 1.32 W/m(2)K for top, centre and lower positions of the window sample. The tests are repeated for accuracy verification, and the U-value is found to be 1.23, 1.18 and 1.31 W/m(2)K for the said points. In this respect, it is concluded that thermal bridges and edge effects play a key role in actual U-value performance of glazing products. Therefore, experimental performance figures are recommended to be utilised in energy demand analyses of buildings. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Daneshazarian, Reza; Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Sher, Farooq

Concentrating photovoltaic thermal (CPVT) collectors and systems are very popular in both domestic and industrial solar energy applications. CPVT collectors provides incomparably greater thermal and electrical outputs compared to stand alone PV or hybrid PVT systems as incoming solar energy is maximised inside the unit via energy-efficient concentrators. Within the scope of this paper, a comprehensive review on CPVT collectors and systems is proposed. For an easier assessment of the findings through state-of-the-art analyses on CPVT collectors, the review is presented in a thematic way. Historical overview of the technology is followed by the detailed description of a CPVT collector with main system elements and thermodynamic performance definitions. The review also covers thermal and electrical performance analysis of CPVT collectors using water or air as working fluid, analytical, numerical, simulation and experimental works for performance evaluation of different design configurations of CPVT systems and qualitative analysis of electrical and thermal energy generation. The impacts of concentrator type and concentration ratio on system efficiency, operating temperature and coefficient of performance (COP) are analysed in detail. It is observed from the findings that CPVT collectors are promising devices in market, and they have a good potential to be competitive with conventional power generation systems in the near future.

A novel method based on thermal conductivity for material identification in scrap industry: An experimental validation

Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Guclu, Tamer; Besir, Ahmet; Gokce, Erkan; Serencam, Ugur; Serencam, Huseyin

Fast, accurate and reliable identification and sorting of materials is still a challenge in recycling sector. Scrap metals are often classified through density and colour, which cause notable financial burdens to the companies in most cases. Within the scope of this research, a novel method based on thermal conductivity is presented for material identification in scrap industry. The unit consists of a constant heat flux source and a cooling system, in which axial heat conduction is enabled and radial heat transfer is eliminated. For the steady-state conditions, temperature gradient across the sample metals is measured along with the constant heat flux value, and the thermal conductivity of the samples is determined via the Fourier's heat conduction law. Copper, brass and stainless steel samples are considered in this research to verify the accuracy of the results. For a reliable and scientific approach, three independent sets of experiments are conducted, and the results are evaluated in terms of accuracy and consistency. Experimental thermal conductivity values of the said samples are compared with the reported data in literature and a good accordance is achieved. Error in measurements is calculated to be 1.37, 3.31 and 4.46% for copper, brass and stainless steel sample, respectively which is acceptable. The tests are repeated with highly sensitive probes for aluminium sample, and the measurement error is calculated to be 0.56%.

Green roofs and facades: A comprehensive review

    Besir, Ahmet B.; Cuce, Erdem

Based on United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), building sector accounts for 40% of total energy consumption. In European countries, 36% of total greenhouse gas emissions is attributed to buildings. In this respect, green roofs are considered to be one of the most appropriate sustainable solutions to resolve the urban heat island-related issues. Roofs account for nearly 20–25% of overall urban surface areas. Energy saving, thermal insulation, shading and evapotranspiration features highlight the key role of green roofs in overall thermal performance of buildings and microclimatic conditions of indoor environments. Within the scope of this research, the concept of green roofs and facades is comprehensively analysed in a holistic and thematic way. Following a historical overview of the technology, the research is split into various subfields such as energy saving in buildings through greenery systems, multifunctional thermal benefits including evapotranspiration, thermal insulation, shading and thermal comfort features, evaporative cooling for reducing cooling demand and minimising wind driven convection losses. The results achieved from the literature survey clearly indicate that green roofs and facades are key solutions to mitigate building-related energy consumptions and greenhouse gas emissions. According to the previous works, heat flow through the building roofs in summer can be reduced by approximately 80% via green roofs. The green roofs are reported to consume less energy in the range of 2.2–16.7% than traditional roofs during summer time. A similar tendency is observed for the winter season depending on regional and climatic conditions. The temperature difference between conventional and greens roofs in winter is found to be about 4 °C, which is remarkable. Energy demand of buildings in summer is highly dependent on the plant intensity as it is reported to be 23.6, 12.3 and 8.2 kWh/m2/year for extensive, semi-intensive and intensive greenery surface, respectively. Greenery systems are also capable of providing thermally comfortable indoor and outdoor conditions. It is underlined that the annual average accumulation of CO2 reaches the level of 13.41–97.03 kg carbon/m2 for 98 m2 of vertical greenery system. The results of this research can be useful for dwellers, builders, architects, engineers and policy makers to have a good understanding about the potential of green roofs and facades to mitigate building-related energy consumptions and carbon emissions in a renewable, sustainable, energy-efficient and cost effective way.
