Assessment of Artificial Intelligence Models for Estimating Lengths of Gradually Varied Flow Profiles

Niazkar, Majid; Hajizadeh Mishi, Farshad; Eryilmaz Türkkan, Gökçen

The study of water surface profiles is beneficial to various applications in water resources management. In this study, two artificial intelligence (AI) models named the artificial neural network (ANN) and genetic programming (GP) were employed to estimate the length of six steady GVF profiles for the first time. The AI models were trained using a database consisting of 5154 dimensionless cases. A comparison was carried out to assess the performances of the AI techniques for estimating lengths of 330 GVF profiles in both mild and steep slopes in trapezoidal channels. The corresponding GVF lengths were also calculated by 1-step, 3-step, and 5-step direct step methods for comparison purposes. Based on six metrics used for the comparative analysis, GP and the ANN improve five out of six metrics computed by the 1-step direct step method for both mild and steep slopes. Moreover, GP enhanced GVF lengths estimated by the 3-step direct step method based on three out of six accuracy indices when the channel slope is higher and lower than the critical slope. Additionally, the performances of the AI techniques were also investigated depending on comparing the water depth of each case and the corresponding normal and critical grade lines. Furthermore, the results show that the more the number of subreaches considered in the direct method, the better the results will be achieved with the compensation of much more computational efforts. The achieved improvements can be used in further studies to improve modeling water surface profiles in channel networks and hydraulic structure designs.

An Action Research on Improving Classroom Communication and Interaction in Social Studies Teaching

    Aksoy, Mutlu; Ceylan, Tuncay

The aim of this research is to reveal how communication and interaction in classrooms can be enhanced with the communicative approach education provided for social studies teachers. The participants of this research were five social studies teachers working at secondary schools and their 7th grade students, N = 110. The data collection tools adopted in this research were video and audio recordings, documents, semistructured interview forms, and stimulated recall interview forms. The data obtained from recordings of lessons were analyzed using the communicative approach, and the data obtained from document review and interview were analyzed using the content analysis method. The results of the study show that social studies curriculum contains items that require both dialogical and authoritative discourses and that the course books are prepared accordingly, but teachers as the practitioners of the program do not conduct their lessons accordingly. Instead, all the teachers participating in the research used only authoritative (interactive/noninteractive) approaches and they did not include dialogical (interactive/noninteractive) approaches at all. This situation, which is seen as a problem in terms of conducting successful in-class communication and interaction, has been solved in three action cycles with one of the teachers. The teacher who used only authoritative (interactive/noninteractive) approaches in her lessons prior to the trainings started to include dialogical (interactive/noninteractive) approaches too. It was also observed that the teacher's impression of the lessons carried out by adopting the communicative approach model was positive. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the communicative approach model is applicable in the social studies course. It can be said that the trainings given to the teachers created awareness about the use of the communicative approach model in classroom communication and interaction and provided benefits in diversifying discourse styles.

Application of Third-Order Schemes to Improve the Convergence of the Hardy Cross Method in Pipe Network Analysis

    Niazkar, Majid; Türkkan, Gökçen Eryilmaz

In this study, twenty-two new mathematical schemes with third-order of convergence are gathered from the literature and applied to pipe network analysis. The presented methods were classified into one-step, two-step, and three-step schemes based on the number of hypothetical discharges utilized in solving pipe networks. The performances of these new methods and Hardy Cross method were compared by solving a sample pipe network considering four different scenarios (92 cases). The results show that the one-step methods improve the rate of convergence of the Hardy Cross method in 10 out of 24 cases (41%), while this improvement was found to be 39 out of 56 cases (69.64%) and 5 out of 8 cases (62.5%) for the two-step and three-step methods, respectively. This obviously indicates that the modified schemes, particularly the three-step methods, improve the performance of the original loop corrector method by taking lower number of iterations with the compensation of relatively more computational efforts.

Eroǧlu, Arzu Yaşar; Çakir, Özlem; Saǧdiç, Mustafa; Dertli, Enes

There is an increasing trend to find novel sources of products with high antioxidant capacity and wild fruits are very good examples for these sources. In this study, fruits of Berberis vulgaris and Berberis crataegina, naturally grown in Bayburt province of Turkey, were tested for their physicochemical features, antioxidant capacities, phenolic compound profiles, and antimicrobial activities. The physicochemical analysis of the fruits revealed that the dry matter content, ash content, pH, and aw values were between 28.47% and 41.61%, 0.65% and 2.13%, 2.44 and 3.25, and 0.996 and 0.97, respectively. The total phenolic content of the fruits was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu methodology, and for the determination of the antioxidant capacity of the fruits, DPPH, ABTS, and β-carotene bleaching methods were performed and a high level of antioxidant activity was observed. HPLC analysis was applied to identify the phenolic content of the fruits, and gallic acid and chlorogenic acid were found to be the dominant phenolic compounds in Berberis fruits. The water extracts of the Berberis fruits were tested against important foodborne pathogenic bacteria as potential antimicrobials. The extracts inhibited the growth of Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhimurium, Yersinia enterocolitica, and Staphylococcus aureus at significant rates. This study revealed the potential antioxidant and antimicrobial characteristics of wild-type B. vulgaris and B. crataegina that can be used for different future applications.

Assessment of three mathematical prediction models for forecasting the covid-19 outbreak in Iran and Turkey

Niazkar, Majid; Türkkan, Gökçen Eryılmaz; Niazkar, Hamid Reza; Türkkan, Yusuf Alptekin

COVID-19 pandemic has become a concern of every nation, and it is crucial to apply an estimation model with a favorably-high accuracy to provide an accurate perspective of the situation. In this study, three explicit mathematical prediction models were applied to forecast the COVID-19 outbreak in Iran and Turkey. These models include a recursive-based method, Boltzmann Function-based model and Beesham's prediction model. These models were exploited to analyze the confirmed and death cases of the first 106 and 87 days of the COVID-19 outbreak in Iran and Turkey, respectively. This application indicates that the three models fail to predict the first 10 to 20 days of data, depending on the prediction model. On the other hand, the results obtained for the rest of the data demonstrate that the three prediction models achieve high values for the determination coefficient, whereas they yielded to different average absolute relative errors. Based on the comparison, the recursive-based model performs the best, while it estimated the COVID-19 outbreak in Iran better than that of in Turkey. Impacts of applying or relaxing control measurements like curfew in Turkey and reopening the low-risk businesses in Iran were investigated through the recursive-based model. Finally, the results demonstrate the merit of the recursive-based model in analyzing various scenarios, which may provide suitable information for health politicians and public health decision-makers.

A Differential Evolution Algorithm-Based Traffic Control Model for Signalized Intersections

    Cakici, Ziya; Murat, Yetis Sazi

Sustainable management of traffic flows at signalized intersections is an important issue in terms of traffic engineering. The minimization of lost time, emission, fuel consumption, etc., can be achieved by optimization-based intersection management. In this study, a new traffic signal control model is developed for the management of three-leg signalized intersections. In the proposed model, signal timing and signal phasing are optimized simultaneously using Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm which is one of the population-based metaheuristic algorithms. The effectiveness of the model is tested on sample traffic scenarios with VISSIM simulation software considering average vehicle delay performance criteria. Results show that the proposed approach may reduce the average vehicle delay between the rates of 28%-42% and 3%-38% comparing to the optimum fixed-time signal control and vehicle-actuated signal control for tested scenarios, respectively.

Developing Statistical Optimization Models for Urban Competitiveness Index: Under the Boundaries of Econophysics Approach

Dönmez, Cem Çaǧri; Atalan, Abdulkadir; Locurcio, Marco

The purpose of this research was to establish the urban competitiveness index (UCI) by using the statistical optimization method for the econophysics approach. With this technique, economic data regarding urban areas and the factors affecting UCI have been determined. The research covers 30 urban centres located in 15 countries worldwide. Urban centres with the gross domestic product per capita of $10,000 or more were taken into consideration. The significant levels of the factors were determined with the statistical optimization method, and optimum values were calculated with the developed optimization models. Re-index values were calculated and compared with the results of PricewaterhouseCoopers and World Economic Forum. According to the results, the high UCI value of these locations depends not only on economic data but also on high values of social factors. Thus, those locations are becoming the centre of attraction for investments and capital with increasing competitiveness.

Optimum Design of Braced Steel Space Frames including Soil-Structure Interaction via Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization and Harmony Search Algorithms

Daloglu, Ayse T.; Artar, Musa; Ozgan, Korhan; Karakas, Ali I.

Optimum design of braced steel space frames including soil-structure interaction is studied by using harmony search (HS) and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithms. A three-parameter elastic foundation model is used to incorporate the soil-structure interaction effect. A 10-storey braced steel space frame example taken from literature is investigated according to four different bracing types for the cases with/without soil-structure interaction. X, V, Z, and eccentric V-shaped bracing types are considered in the study. Optimum solutions of examples are carried out by a computer program coded in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000-OAPI for two-way data exchange. The stress constraints according to AISC-ASD (American Institute of Steel Construction-Allowable Stress Design), maximum lateral displacement constraints, interstorey drift constraints, and beam-to-column connection constraints are taken into consideration in the optimum design process. The parameters of the foundation model are calculated depending on soil surface displacements by using an iterative approach. The results obtained in the study show that bracing types and soil-structure interaction play very important roles in the optimum design of steel space frames. Finally, the techniques used in the optimum design seem to be quite suitable for practical applications.
