Story analysis with reference to semantic analysing of sabahattin ali’s story “duvar”
Özet
There exists understanding, explanation and agreement at the center of every type of human activity. Language is not a system randomly coming together to pass our thoughts to others, it is a string based on words each one of which was born with the principle of causality. Language is a system including words that connect to each other and to other things to provide communication and its intention is to provide on the one hand a message and on the other a set of signs or symbols. Ferdinand de Saussure is famous for his sign language and this system is evaluated as the relationship between ‘signifier ou signifiant’ or ‘signified or signifier’. Linguistics is the scientific research of language. Semantics, however, is a subdivision of linguistics, which investigates the meaning of the language. Semantics is not interested in the meaning of semantic phrases but rather it thematizes the meaning of sentences and underlines changes in meaning and relationships between signifier and signified. In semantics, the meaning is not what is said but what is understand. It examines the part of the signified of a sign both diachronically and simultaneously. According to Guiraud (1999), a word with no meaning has its uses. The meaning of a word depends on the relation to the other words within the same context. This view stems from Saussure’s “value” notion which is the result of the relation build between sign and the other formats in the language. According to Saussure (1998), everything becomes meaningful as a whole. In language, there is no individual element but only dissention. When our perception contrasts and comprehends the outside world, it begins to make shapes and to make sense to us. In this study, Sabahattin Ali’s story “Duvar” in which he frequently refers to the notion of “Freedom” is examined utilizing Semiotics. Considering semantics, meaning fields as denotation, connotation, semantic analysis, antonym, hyponymy and homonymy are emphasized. Also, the elements of person, place and time of the story are showed in text level
