İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2022Assembly Line Worker Assignment and Balancing Problem by Considering Labor Cost
Yılmaz, Hamid
Assignment of worker appears as a new problem in the literature for assembly lines (AL) where the workforce is heterogeneously located. The difference of this line balancing from the traditional line is that the assembly task times of the workers to be assigned to the stations differ from each other. Especially assembly lines issues are generally a labor-intensive type of production. Therefore, for assembly line problems, balancing activity should be done considering the labor costs. Thus, the proposed solutions will be able to produce more realistic results for real life. For this purpose, in this study, a mixed-integer mathematical formulation is presented for assembly line worker assignment and balancing problems by considering the objective function of minimizing labor costs and cycle time. The efficiency of the proposed model and the improvements have been demonstrated by solving test instances in the literature.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2An online software to simulate the shielding properties of materials for neutrons and photons: NGCal
Gökçe, H. S.; Güngör, O.; Yilmaz, H.
NGCal, a free online computation software (http://ngcal.com), has been developed for narrow beam transmission properties of photons (for energies of X rays and gamma rays between 0.002 MeV and 20 MeV), thermal (25.4 meV) and fast neutrons (4 MeV), in this regard it theoretically calculates the mass and linear attenuation coefficient/factor, mean free path, half- and tenth-value layers of materials formed by elements, compounds and composites. Its calculation assumptions, user guide as well as a comparative example of its results to those of other online computation platforms (XCOM, NCNR, WinXCOM, MCNPX, and Phy-X/PSD) are presented in this study. The developed software allows for more data input consisting of elements/oxides/compound and their fractions, and presents a number of shielding results required by researchers and scientists working on radiation shielding properties of multi-component materials.

Yilmaz, Hamid
Assembly lines appear with various differentiations in order to better include the disabled in the labor market and to increase production efficiency. In this way, the optimal workforce assignment problem that emerges heterogeneously is called assembly line worker assignment and balancing problem (ALWABP). This paper addresses the ALWABP where the simple version is enriched by considering sequence-dependent setup times between tasks. A mixed integer linear programming model is presented, and a simulated annealing algorithm is developed such as an NP-hard problem. In order to test the proposed solutions, 640 benchmark problems in the literature were combined and used. The solutions obtained through using the proposed algorithm are compared with the mixed integer programming model on the small-size test problems. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more effective and robust for a large set of benchmark problems.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2Hybrid tabu search algorithm for weight optimization of planar steel frames
Tayfur, Bilal; Yilmaz, Hamid; Daloğlu, Ayşe T.
In this study, a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm called Hybrid Tabu Search (HTS) is proposed for the weight optimization of planar steel structures. The effectiveness of HTS lies in improving the initial conditions of a tabu search algorithm with a greedy search algorithm and a swap operator used in the phase of section selection. The effectiveness of the proposed method is tested and validated on three different benchmark examples. C♯ software is developed to perform the structural analyses. Numerical results obtained by using HTS showed that the proposed method achieved significantly lighter frame weights in most of the benchmark examples. When the method was examined in terms of computational efficiency, HTS was at a level that can compete with other algorithms examined within this study, although it did not provide a significant advantage.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ2A mathematical model and tabu search algorithm for multi-manned assembly line balancing problems with assignment restrictions
Yilmaz, Hamid; Yilmaz, Mustafa
A multi-manned assembly line is a set of workstations where task operations can be performed on multiple sides of the line. Such assembly lines are important for large products, such as buses, cars and trucks. In this study, a mathematical model for multi-manned assembly lines with assignment restrictions is proposed. The purpose of the mathematical model is to minimize the total number of workers and open multi-manned workstations along the line for a given cycle time simultaneously under various assignment restrictions. The model provides a more realistic situation for multi-manned assembly line problems. The tabu search algorithm (TSA) is also used to solve the problem. The performances of both methods on well-known data-set problems are analysed. Based on the computational experiments, the performance of the proposed TSA is compared with the mathematical model solutions on various problem instances. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed TSA.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019A New Mathematical Model for Assembly Line Worker Assignment and Balancing
Yılmaz, Hamid; Demir, Yunus
Aim of assembly line balancing is to assign the product parts to the workstations that constitute the assembly line. Worker assignment problem is a new problem variety in assembly lines that typically is met in different situations in which the workforce is not homogeneous. This problem is different from the well-known simple assembly line balancing problem from the view point of task execution times of nonhomogeneous workers. In this paper, we introduce a new mathematical formulation with objective function to minimize the cycle time for the assembly line worker assignment and balancing problem (ALWABP). GUROBI solver is used for the problem solution. The mathematical model is examined by using a standard test problem set. As a result of the experiments, it is observed that the proposed mathematical model is more effective in terms of solution quality and CPU time than the current mathematical method.

Yılmaz, Hamid; Demir, Yunus
Assembly line balancing is a production planning strategy that has been widely used in industrial applications. Most line balancing problems are known as nondeterministic polynomial time (NP-hard) problem, and theyhave different structures and solution methodology approaches. In this study, newly developed productionplanning software which is called Visual Assembly Line Balancing Software (VALBS) is introduced foreducational purposes. The aim of the software is to support teaching activity for assembly line balancingtechniques; facilitate understanding characteristics of different assembly lines and solution approaches, andenable to compare the results of them. The proposed VALBS is easy to use in various manufacturingenvironments, and suitable to support teaching line balancing procedures in undergraduate students. Thesoftware was used in classes of industrial and mechanical engineering students and feedbacks of studentsmeasured by Likert Scale survey. The results show that proposed visual software is an effective method to teachline balancing procedures.
